| | Adrian Pritchard | Fantastic | | I happen to come to this Pub everytime I'm down working near Weymouth.
I don`t why the majority of you are moaning on here as I have never had a nasty meal yet.
If you want Michelin Stars, it`s going to cost you alot more than £4.50 and those of you who are too ill-bred and bad mannered to pay for your food and drinks like everybody else and manufacture these scams should reported to the Police for fraud.
Carrying around Earthworms in your pockets so that you can skip out on your bill??? We`re you raised by Wolves...come on...tut tut tut!!
To all the Staff at the Spyglass, keep up the good work. | | Saturday, June 19, 2010 | Rating: rosettes |
| | Roy Hills | Horrible | | Went to this tired dump for dinner on 10/06/2010. Should have been warned by the stale food smell and the ant (or cockroach) powder round the skirting boards. They advertised beef, gammon, minted lamb and pork. In fact it was only very fatty rolled joint of pork or dry beef. There was a chicken pie, but we were told this was not part of the carvery. The veg. was virtually uneatable being obviously warmed through several times, shrivelled and hard. Two of our party of four had upset stomachs the following morning! A typical tired tourist rip-off spot to be avoided! | | Saturday, June 12, 2010 | Rating: No rosettes |
| | Mrs Cheetham | Awful carvery and service | | Visited the Spyglass with my mother, sister and 2 young children over the spring half term holidays. We had been looking forward to a traditional pub carvery but were sadly disappointed with both the food and the service. The person serving us at the bar was unecessarily rude to both ourselves and the elderly gentleman next to us. The carvery was a choice of either beef or pork. Both were at the end and the chef was struggling to hack through the lump of fat and grislte left, which he intended to serve us. I politely pointed out that he was just cutting fat off. After continuing to try to carve for a few more minutes, without a word, he slammed the knife down and marched off. He came back a few minutes later with 2 new joints of meat. The beef was then agrressively hacked in half and carved. Even my litttle boy said to me, mum, I thinks he's a bit angry!! This is not what I expect on a family meal out and we will not be visiting again or recommending to anyone. | | Monday, June 07, 2010 | Rating: No rosettes |
| | cady | Just to clarify | | Im just writing to clarify Mr Crawleys statement on his free worm story.
I was actually the manager who dealt with the complaint i believe the truth has been bent and important parts were missed out.
When this customer came to inform me of this i was very sincere and shocked about what he had found, he was also sincere and said he wanted a refund and was shocked that i took the aligation so seriously and said you dont look happy about this of course not who would be. I found his attitude towards this strange as he was compleatly laid back with the situation. When i went to have a look at what was found, it had been moved from her soup bowl (which by the way had been compleatly finished off) to his plate, it was in one piece (which i strange as our soup is blitzed) and there was to no soup on it or near it. I stupidly agreed to give him a refund back, when he saw i was only refunding his food his attitude became very threating torwards me so feeling uncomfortable gave it to him whilst he made comments over my wages. At no point did i argue with him. What i should have done was send off the subject to be analysed then depended on the outcome would have given a refund if it were true how threating would he have beome then. We took on our own investigation and can not find any way this would have happened. | | Thursday, May 13, 2010 | Rating: No rosettes |
| | Dan | | | My Family and I visited the spyglass on Sunday for Sunday lunch. We all had carvery. The meat, potatoes and Parsnips were very nice but the vegetables were disgusting: the carrots were undercooked and hard, the red cabbage was bland and cauliflower wasn't great either. The drinks were ok other than the ' Blackcurrant squash which tasted of cherry, we subsequently had to buy more drinks. The puddings were lovely. My brother is in a wheelchair and there was not enough room in the loo to get him and my mum in to toilet him.
All in all, it was ok. Been to better places. | | Sunday, May 09, 2010 | Rating: rosettes |
| | john crawley | free worms | | Went to weymouth for a day out for my Birthday, my other half said i know a nice place for lunch !!!!!! so we went to the spyglass for food and drinks ... what can i say about this...
Well as my other half was having her soup there was a earth worm in the soup , yes you read that correctly an earth worm
The manager should spend more time sorting out the chef than arguing with me about a refund as i wanted a full refund and she only want to refund for the food not the drinks we had. ..... I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THIS PUB unless i'm in the mood for worms for lunch | | Tuesday, April 13, 2010 | Rating: No rosettes |
| | Nicola Ellis | Never setting foot in there again! | | My partner and I visited the Spyglass on Fri lunchtime. (2nd April) and were disgusted with the carvery. The pork on offer looked like it was just roasted lard and the beef was tougher that a 1920's football boot. The carvery had just opened as we got there, but still the veg was cold. I think there must of been a beef ration on Fri as I have seen more meat in a vegetarians sandwich than we had on our plates! To top it all, they charged us £6.99 each instead of the usual £4.50 as it was Good Friday, nothing good about it in the Spyglass! We left the place without the feeling of a full belly but a feeling of being totally ripped off! WE HAD A LOVELY MEAL AT LODMOOR AND WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO ALL. | | Sunday, April 04, 2010 | Rating: No rosettes |
| | Lizzy | Brilliant | | I recently took my family to the spyglass for a meal and found the service unfaultable. we were greeted at the door by a young lady which was nice and had a friendly chat with a man behind the bar whilst our drinks order was being attended to. The pub was lovely and clean and the service was quick. The food was great and i found it to be a good place to eat, drink and chill out. | | D.Bristow | Disgusting waste of my time | | I visited this pub over the weekend for the first time and it will be the last time. I opted for the Serlion steak, at £11 something and it was nothing more than a microwave meal. The chips were cold and i only had 15 of them, the steak itself was nothing more than a long beef burger. When the meal was brought to us, we were told to get our own cutlery and we asked for mustard twice we still didnt get it. we could have done with the mustard to take away the rubbey taste of the steak. I have had better quality, quantity and value for money from tea vans in laybys.
I would never advise anybody to go to the spyglass for a meal. | | Sunday, February 21, 2010 | Rating: No rosettes |

| | Roy Shave | Spyglass Weymouth | | We visited your Spyglass restaurant in Weymouth last night 21/10/09 at 7.30pm as a family of 8 with the intention of having a carvery. After ordering drinks we were disappointed to find the remains of the carvery very limited. We saw a piece of beef fit for the bin as it was the end piece and a dried out gammon. The selection of vegetables were limited too. In your advertisment you say 'Excellent Daily Carvery available with choice of up to 3 roasts, a large selection of fresh vegetables & traditional accompaniments' which was not what we saw. We opted to have something off the main menu.
When we orderded it took nearly an hour for the food to arrive. In our order we had 3 Angus burgers which in my opinion were over done to the point of being dried out, very chewy and tasteless. I have had better from McDonalds
If it was busy I could understand why we had to wait so long but it was quite quiet. There didn't seem to be any sense of urgency from the waitresses. When we had finished we had sweets which again took ages to come out. When we had finished the waitress asked us if we wanted anthing else and I said 'no just the bill'. She then went about clearing away the empty plates. 15 minutes later we had to re-request the bill which seemed to be a surprise to the waitress.
The total bill came to £94.00 which in my opinion wasn't worth it. We all thought we could have got a better meal from a local take away. This experience has left a bad taste in my mouth in more ways than one and I don't think we will be coming back. Maybe this is one of the reasons for the restaurant being quiet. Please pass my comments onto your head office as I think they would be very interested.
I would also like a response from yourselves as to why I feel let down by your customer satisfaction. Judging by some of the comments left how do you stay open for business. I think you should call in Gorden Ramsey to shake things up!!
I look forward to hearing from you.

| | phil Scott | terrible | | I went with my kids last wednesday as it looked like a good place to eat. We were told that there was no sirloin and shown to our seats, they had no straws for the kids drinks, only one piece of chicken left, the staff didn't know the specials and we waited for about an hour for the food. When it did come it was very dissapointing. On leaving I asked for a discount because of the poor service and I was told that they couldn't do that. Even the toilets had run out of soap. Its the worst place I've ever eaten in and I have been in some dives in my time | | Saturday, August 29, 2009 | Rating: No rosettes |

| | S.Thorne | Diabolical !!! | | We visited the Spyglass for the first time today as we are locals and to put it this way we wont be going back, Apparently it is under new management but i couldnt see that with the lack of manners of the new manager. we waited over a hour for a burger and salad only to be told that the printer has broken down from the bar to the kitchen and that our order was lost!! i asked for a refund with no apology. This is the worst experiance of going for a pub meal ever....my advice is go into town as there are better quality pubs with nicer management! | | Tuesday, June 16, 2009 | Rating: No rosettes |

| | D England | Very Nice | | I have been on a long weekend in Weymouth and I have been to the Spy Glass for a few years now.
However, the last time I visited must have been well over 2 years now.
I went to the pub on Friday night and was greeted at the door, and was then shown the carvery... very nice.
Sat down by the window and I was amazed how the place had changed, more space, looked nice and clean and the staff very helpful.
The food was wonderful, really nice carvery I enjoyed it so much.... I went back Saturday night also.
Well done for turning the place round.

| | Elizabeth Booth | Long Wait. | | We visited Weymouth for the weekend and thought we had found a lovely place in The Spyglass Inn for a meal. We entered the establishment and was told a couple of things were off the menu and would be told at the time of ordering what they were.
We were a party of four adults and a child.
. We ordered our meals and were told that they had not got what we had ordered, it was too late to leave and go elsewhere, so we chose a substitute which was very poor. We were told the reason for the problems was a refrigeration break down (which we thought to be true until reading the reviews of this Inn).
We then waited an hour for our meals to arrive.
There were a lot of unhappy customers that evening. We felt sorry for the staff who were getting the moans and groans, when it was not their fault. One member of stall had been on duty since 11.30am and had not had a break, and the time was 8.30pm.
What a waste of lovely Inn, in a beautiful setting. | | Monday, September 22, 2008 | Rating: No rosettes |
| | michael | Poor Customer service | | On the evening of Monday 18th August 2008 we had a booking at the Spyglass. On our arrival we were greeted by the manager telling us that there was no power in the kitchen, and so no food. No real apology, no offer of compensation for a wrecked evening (a token gesture would have been nice). It was basically can't serve food - go away! Not a good advert for the premises. In Weymouth there are plenty of quality establishments that want my business. I and my party will not be going there again - they have lost about £200 worth of business on the night from our small group and also future business. I will be certainly be telling anyone who asks what my experience was and I know the rest of my friends will spreading their thoughts!!!!!
On another note - their drinks are really expensive - Back to Weatherspoons (we now have 2 - Yipee!) Even the small independant pubs charge less than this national company. | | Saturday, August 30, 2008 | Rating: No rosettes |

| | Peter Harris | Pleasent surprise on return ..... | | Having had a bad experience in May I emailed Orchid Pubs with a report and part of their response was to invite me to return at the end of July for a carvery meal. I did and - Arriving unannounced at around 7.30 we were warmly greeted by Craig, the manager and his staff. I noted that the restaurant was now airy and kept looking good though I would say that trade was light. Table service was good. The meat was excellent and apart from 2 of the 6 vegetables which had been out just a bit too long everything else was very good at the carvery. Craig did comment that there is still some problems with staffing and looked to be very busy himself. I look forward to returning to the Spyglass. This well positioned pub restaurant overlooking Weymouth bay does seem to be overcoming its recent problems and emergng as a nice place to eat with a well kept bar. | | Tuesday, July 29, 2008 | Rating: rosettes |
| | jon kay | crap manager | | Having visited your establishment for many years now I must admit for the last two years I have been very disappointed not only with the food but mainly with the attitude of the manager. (I believe his name is BENNETT) On more than one occasion I have seen him have a go at old ladies because they sit at a table for too long with a cup of tea. When dealing with customers he comes across as very threatening, he thinks he is a little Hitler ! This pub could be the best in Weymouth if it was managed properly my family and I will not use this pub again until the owners get someone in who is family friendly. If your a family with kids going to Weymouth on holiday don't use this pub because he hates them. | | Sunday, June 22, 2008 | Rating: No rosettes |
| | Gary Martin | Really Disappointing | | For a pub to have this much potential and to throw it all away is unbelievable.
Fathers day 15th June - booked a table only to be told on arrival (having waited for 10 minutes to be seated) that we couldn't sit outside (on what was one of the best days weather wise this year). Treatment from the manager was appalling. I wonder if the person that owns the restuarant knows that he's having his money thrown away. | | Monday, June 16, 2008 | Rating: No rosettes |
| | Wayne Bryant | Short staffed, unfriendly, limited menu | | We arrived late afternoon and it was not busy. The spyglass was like a sauna, it was so hot! We asked for the menu and was told it was limited due to staffing problems. basically it was carvery or steak pie. So, we opted for carvery. After 20 mins we got our drinks. The meat was lovely but everything else was rubbish. I heard several people complain about how long they had been waiting & why they were open with 2 waiting staff for a place that size. I may return in the future if they can get some polite staff and actually keep them. | | Saturday, May 24, 2008 | Rating: rosettes |
| | David Walker | long wait food overcooked rubbery | | We had desided to eat out on new years day, so after booking a table for 2pm a few days before hand. On arrival just before 2pm we approched the food order counter to inform the staff we were ready to be seated at our table.
After giving the booking name we were pointed towards a large set of patio doors and were told our table is the round one. Our party of 6 found our way to the table and proceeded to look at the menu, once decided we made our way to order our food, after ordering we were told that it would take about 1 hour and a half until we were able eat.
This was at 2.11 pm, our food arrived finaly at 3.50 pm. 3 ordered mixed grill 1 big feast burger 1 scampi and 1 ciabatta with cheese & bacon plus fries.
The ample steak on the mixed grill was no bigger than a 50 pence, the egg was over cooked with crispy brown edges, 3 mushrooms per meal and by the time the onion rings arrived they were overcooked and contained more oil than onion.
the ciabatta had seemed to have been warmed up several times and was like eating a rubber band. the chips on all meals must have been redipped on several occations as the were crispy and hollow with no taste of potato. Whilst waiting for our main meals we were contenplating having a sweet, after such a long wait for our meals we did not wish to wait just as long for our sweets. All of our party were very disapointed with the service, the food and the lack off support from the staff. On our way out of the resturant area we could not help but notice the amount off food other customers had left. I do NOT think any of us will be eating at the Spyglass Inn anymore AND we live locally. On all previous occations over the years we have never had reason to complain about the food or sevice at the Spyglass. I will also be complaining to the good pub resturant guide. | | Monday, January 01, 2007 | Rating: rosettes |
| | Becky | AMAZING | | The spyglass inn, is FANTASTIC, nowhere else will you be served get the pleasure of being by such an array of european waiting staff, who will stop at nothing to make sure your visit is og top class quality. The bar staff are friendly and actually want to be there, you will be greated with enthusasim and joy. Thier love for thier job is no doubt down partly to the amazing management team but massivley to the local clientel. The traditional snug, where the locals hangout, is like being transported back in time to a better place, the men drinking bitter and exchanging stories. | | Thursday, October 12, 2006 | Rating: rosettes |
| | Chris Simmint | Good Food - Nice pub | | I have been visiting this pub for years every summer. Reading some of your comments I must admit I am very supprised. This is the first year I have been here that I have been greeted by staff whom seem they actually want to be there and the first time I can say that the food and service has been spot on. Every year I have settled with bringing my family and dog to a pub where the toilets were disgusting the food slow and inedable and the garden looking like a bombs hit it. This year we recieved our food in 30 mins, last year i remember waiting nearly 2 hours, and everyone went out there way to assist in anyway possible. By your messages I can see this has changed hands and it is nice to see that the pub is on the way up. Thanks spyglass staff fron table 51!! | | Saturday, September 30, 2006 | Rating: rosettes |

| | Sarah | A spoilt family occasion | | We had booked a table for nine people with three weeks notice to celebrate our anniversary with my family. We had been out to the Spyglass on numerous occasions in the past as the food, service and beer are all good plus the added childrens playarea. We had the table booked for 8pm, we ordered our meals by 8.20pm. Our starters arrived by about 9pm. We waited for the main course which did not arrive by 10pm so we asked how long we would have to wait and were told another twenty minutes. By this time 6 of the family walked out, the remaining waited for another half hour and when the food finally arrived it was just not fit to eat. The salad and vegetables were withered and stale and my husbands steak was burnt. We had no apology from the staff and the manager was doing his best to hide and let his staff do his job. Very disappointed and definately won't be going back. | | Monday, July 03, 2006 | Rating: No rosettes |
| | Pete Cornelius | spyglass has changed | | once a year i visit Dorset for a week ,and always make sure i can squeeze in a trip to the spyglass as the beer and food has always been great, but i must say that after this years visit last week, i was rather disapointed with the small portions you now get, the quality of food is still good, but half the size i have been used to in previous years.
looking at some of the other posts on this site, i now realise that it has changed hands and this could explain the changes including longer waiting times for your meal as someone else has mentioned.
i do hope it improves as i have always enjoyed my visits to the spyglass, but like i said, i was very disapointed this year | | Tuesday, June 27, 2006 | Rating: rosettes |
| | Gary | My son's birthday meal at the Spyglass Inn | | This is a copy of comments I have sent to goodpubrestaurants.co.uk which appears to be the official way to complain.
Our visit to the Spyglass Inn was to celebrate my son's birthday.
We had booked a table for Sunday 28th May 06 at 7.30 pm.
When we arrived just before 7.30 we were told that the meal could take up to an hour and a half to arrive. We were not happy with this but accepted the situatuion even though we had prebooked.
At about 9.00 pm three of the starters arrived. The fourth starter went missing but we chased it down and it finally arrived.
We assumed that the main courses would now arrive not far behind the starters but no.
At 9.50pm I went to the counter and asked how much longer we would have to wait for our meals, I was told they would be at least another 30 minutes.
By now we had all lost the enthusiasm that we had at the start of the evening and decided to leave. Our son's evening had been ruined. Many other customers were complaining. By the time we decided to leave the manager had mysteriously disappeared and the junior staff were taking the flak.
From when we sat down to when we walked out no member of staff came to apologise or update us on the whereabouts of our meals.
The service and management experienced at the Spyglass was the most amateur we have ever encountered.
I hope this is not ignored with the attitude that a few complaints are not important. It certainly mattered to my 13 year old son.
We look forward to some positive feedback.
Thank you

| | Julie | Very small portions | | Went their for Mother's Day after hearing it had changed hands, hoping that it had improved. No it's even worse than before, we don't expect big portionslike the Americans do, but the portions they served are a joke. For example with steak you get 2 button mushrooms, yes 2 !!! 3 onion rings and a handful of chips, and the meal was luke warm. I'm not a big eater but this didn't even fill me up. Very disappointing. | | Sunday, March 26, 2006 | Rating: rosettes |
