| Parky | A proper pub for proper drinkers! | | The Queen's is a great pub. Free darts, wonderful jukebox, log fire in the winter. The landlady is tyrannical when it comes to dealing with bad behaviour (and language) in the place, as a result the feral-faced youth of Gosport stay away from the place. If you're looking for a scrap, you aren't going to get it here.
The Queens has a fantastic selection of ales on draught at all times, with guest ales waiting in the wings. They also have the best pork scratchings for miles, but no meals. Well, this is a pub after all, there is a chip shop down Forton Road if you're hungry.
The layout of the place is intersting. It's essentially box-shaped but with three dividing walls. A skinny section hosts the dartboard and jukebox with stools and a narrow ledge by the window providing seating for players and drinkers alike. The bar proper is in the front section, big enough to seat all the regulars and enough room for people to stand at the bar to boot. (Word of warning: only stand by the fire in the winter if you're planning on saving your loved ones the cost of a cremation. I think the Navy chuck old nuclear weapons on the logs)
The biggest part of the pub is devoted to seating, with a good number of tables and seats crammed in to cater for people seeking shelter from the hellishly-hot log fire. This is where I sit - easy access to bar, jukebox and toilets and if you swaer very quietly you'll probably get away with it. Unless Sue the landlady is sttod behind you! Never risked a cross word in there since!
The Queens is a brilliant pub. It's never lost it's working class roots, and the licencees make sure that they cater for their loyal punters instead of blindly following the latest trends in pubology. Even the volume on the jukebox is perfectly set for background mode.
I'd advise anyone to seek this place out if they're in Gosport, especially if you prefer a nice ale over a fizzy pint of horse urine. | | Sunday, November 06, 2005 | Rating:  rosettes |
