This Cafe style bar has a central circular bar and wood panelled walls. It has an ornately carved wooden fireplace with a huge mirror above. The ceiling and cornices are typical of the Victorian period of elegance. On one wall there are painted tiled panels depicting famous inventors at their moment of discovery. They are roughly eight foot tall and the accompanying plaque beneath states – “These six pictures painted by John Eyre and manufactured as tiles by Katherine Sturgeon and W J W Nunn of Doulton and Co. All show inventors each at the moment of his discovery. The pictures were shown at the 1886 exhibition, held at the Meadows in Edinburgh and purchased as tiles by an early licensee.” A mirrored wall separates the bar from it’s attached restaurant which supplies pub food reportedly the most expensive in town. Unfortunately, for the serious drinker there is a limited supply of beer, Directors, Deuchars, Theakston, Harviestoun Natural Blonde and McEwans 70/- and 80/- (what I spotted on the night I visited) and only a short wine list. With a mixed clientele and its rich decor it should be an enlightening experience to drink there.!
