The perfect place to go for a pint and a chat with friends without the usual piped music. This pub is in the most bohemian and trendy street in Scotland. The Barony Bar is unpretentious but often packed at night. The dark wood panelled walls are warmed by the traditional open coal/wood fire which often blazes day and night. Historical:
The Barony stands on land which was once part of the ancient 'Barony of Broughton in the parish of St Cuthbert's in the Shire of Edinburgh', an area notorious in days gone by as a haunt for witches and followers of the 'Black Arts'. Indeed Broughton Street itself is built where formerly there once stood thatched cottages one reputedly to have been called the 'Witches Howf' and dungeons which at one time held worshippers of the 'Black Arts' while they awaited execution. The building which currently houses the Barony was part of a five storey corner basement built in 1830 by Walter Burns, an upholsterer and David Chalmers, a baker, who both traded from the premises. The building has seen many tradesmen including : J. Stewart, surgeon; John Murdock, grocer; James Walker, guilder; W and G Williams, marble cutters; John Moffat, stationer to name a few. In 1919, John McLauchlan, wine and spirit merchants bought the licensed house premises + cellars at 83-85 Broughton Street from George Sinclair for £1,100 having already acquired the other half in 1896. It was the purchased in 1944 by Thomas Urquart Forsyth who a year later purchased no.81 The combined properties were then sold to William Younger and Company in 1955 with title transferring to Scottish Brewers in 1959. In 1966 the Secretary of State for Scotland listed the property as a 'Building of Special Architectural and Historic Interest'.Linda - Feb 2001

| John | Best on Sunday | | Still the best place to go in Edinburgh on a Sunday evening especially when Bedford Falls are on !! | | Friday, December 04, 2009 | Rating: rosettes |
| | Pete | slow service | | Although to be fair it is invariably Fri or Sat night when I am there so it is very busy. That said they do not seem able to adjust their staffing to cope, and the time taken to be served can sometimes be ridiculous. If live music is on then conversation is shouting only, in all areas of the bar, and coupled with the actually music the whole night can be a bit of an assault on the senses.
Good choice of ales if that is important to you. Some of the (female) bar staff need to remember what they are actually there to do and act like they are professionals. Too many times i have been made to feel that I should be lucky just to be getting sreved by them. No warmth, chat or smile. Maybe you have to be a regular local before you get that sort of treatment in this bar! | | Wednesday, July 16, 2008 | Rating: rosettes |
| | Grant Law | could be improved | | This pub has a good range of beers and whiskies and has a pleasant environment. It has improved after the smoking ban but the toilets need to be refurbished. The food served and thus this whole kitchen area has to be improved. | | Sunday, November 26, 2006 | Rating: rosettes |

| | Edinburgh critic | Quiet pub in great area | | The perfect place to go for a lunchtime snack in quiet unpretentious surroundings. Enormous old-fashioned mirrors adorn the place and the open fire was very welcoming. An inexpensive bottle of wine can be had, or maybe you fancy one of the real ales. Last Sunday, we enjoyed the all-day breakfast, with a quiet pint and a chat with friends. Had a browse through the Sunday papers with a pint of crystal-clear, refreshing Beck's. An hour well spent. | | Thursday, March 29, 2001 | Rating: rosettes |
