This basement bar in St Stephens Street is reached by descending a steep flight of steps. Inside the pub is split into two seperate areas with a small bar in each. Both rooms have old wooden floors and dark wood furniture. There is a basic range of drinks at the bar and food is cooked on the premises and available during the day. Folk nights are held on Thursdays and on Friday evening a basic buffet is on offer to attract the 'after work set'. This is a friendly bar which serves breakfast and newspapers on Sunday morning. As with many Edinburgh pubs there is a resident ghost, this one is a female seen by staff.

| ups and downs | Good stuff | | A great pub to go to for that authentic Scottish feel, great food and drink although a wee bit pricey and although the staff are generally very nice I found the owner to be quite rude. | | Thursday, March 05, 2009 | Rating: rosettes |
| | LN & Calum | an honest pub | | Superb atmosphere created by caring staff. Sunday breakfast is a must as is the properly homemade Burgers YUM...
The bar is always spotless.
We'd recommend this place to anybody. | | Sunday, February 22, 2009 | Rating: rosettes |
| | Fraser White | Bonza | | Hi my name is fraser, and I really like going to pubs that are a long way from my house. Especially when I have my bike | | Wednesday, August 30, 2006 | Rating: rosettes |
| | MS | Good pub with great folk. | | This a really good 'proper' pub tucked down in the basement on bohemian St Stephen Street in Stockbridge. Probably the best pub in Edinburgh for an informal (turn up and play) folk session (Every Thursday night 9 to midnightish). Highly recommended!
If only Edinburgh had more 'real' pubs like this and less 'style bar' poser palaces with sky high prices and unauthentic 'theme' pubs with conversation killing loud music, wall to wall stag and hen parties and bog standard global brand beers! If that's your bag then stick to George Street, Rose Street, Grassmarket and Lothian Road, but if not take a stroll down to Stockbridge for a more pleasant alternative.
If you enjoy a friendly, attractive, authentic pub with decent beer and great music the Antiquary might just become your favourite pub in Edinburgh too!

| | CJ | Great place to unwind | | I spent some wonderful nights here sipping cider by the fire and writing letters. I loved this place when I lived in Edinburgh. Sometimes I wish I could walk out of my flat and pop in for a couple of pints. Unfortunately, that would now require a long plane ride... | | Tuesday, December 20, 2005 | Rating: rosettes |
| | Simon Leadbetter | Brilliant | | I have come to Edinburgh to work for a few months and found the Antiquary to be a real home from home. The staff are attentive and friendly and the pub has a pleasant atmosphere. One down side is that a quick visit can turn into a long night without you even noticing. | | Friday, November 26, 2004 | Rating: rosettes |
