Greatly Improved
At the time I would have had to agree with all Steve's comments having avoided the place myself after refusal to change a pint of vinegar one too many times. But how things have changed, now regularly visiting again and haven't had a bad pint in the last 18 months, in fact the quality of the beer is absolutely spot on. I Dont drink Bodds, as its no longer proper bods anymore, but the guest beer range is fantastic now the pub is free of tie on cask. Choice a plenty with monthly themed festivals with beers from one area. E.g. Cheltenham area for the festival, Cornwall for the summer hols and beers from the area a test cricket match is played. Whilst it could do with a refurb, its also cleaner with all the smells apart from the Gents sorted (machine installed to partially mask them, but in the 25 years i've visited there has always been a problem - obviously un-fixable!) An absolute Gem now for fans of small brewery real ales.

Getting Worse
I for many years have been a customer of this pub mainly because you could always get a good pint of Boddingtons, sadly no more! This may be due to Inbev ruining Boddies but apart from that the guest beers are rarely in sparkling condition and of late are undrinkable, on occasions I have tried four different beers none of which were palatable, a bit of a pig in a poke. It appears to be of no use returning beer, as when I did (when a pint tasted vinegary, not for the first time) I was informed by the Landlord (after he tasted it) that there was nothing wrong with it? How standards have changed.
So sadly I no longer visit as I don't wish to pay good money to have sub standard beer.
As well as the poor beer the place in general is grubby, in the small room next to the pool table you can often see mice running around at quiet times. The gents usually stink awful and are freezing in winter.
And they wonder why pubs are closing fast?

Service has improved lately. At one time if you were stood the wrong side of the huge support pillar in the middle of the bar, and the staff were stood the other side of it, then you had no chance.
They seem to have got rid of the smell of sewage that plagued the pub for months, but now there is an awful smell round the bar like milky baby sick...also you may have to roll your trousers up before wading into the gents....disgusting !

Not as good as it was
It's been sanitised hasn't it? Always seemed a bit rough and ready to me. I preferred it then. Still a good pint though. Worth a visit definitely.

Preston Critic
Fine Pub
The Old Black Bull in Preston is one of those timeless old real pubs. There are always real ales and guest ales available. This pub has been in business since the year dot and I can't remember a time in the past 40 years when the Old Black Bull hasn't been popular with both the traditional Preston drinkers and newcomers alike. Well frequented by the student population as well. Gigs are often held here at weekends. 10 out of 10 for a great pub.
