Friendly pub that serves strangeways beer's

nice but they need to learn how to cook a steak.
A really nice bar with a good selection of ales spirits and whiskeys for reasonable prices. Has a nice lounge and beer garden to the rear with large umbrellas for when the weather suddenly turns.
Our only gripe was that the chef is obviously a vegetarian as he/she has no idea how to cook a steak. Between our group of 12 we ordered 5 steaks and asked for them to be cook either rare of medium rare, every one came out extremely well done and horribly dry and tough.
Such a shame as everything else was great.

A pub to avoid
The pub may be fine for eating but I have to agree with Nick. A walk along the Wall with dogs must be common place. To be out in the country and find that a pub cannot be entered is unfortunate. Luckily I now know in advance and tomorrow's walk will be elsewhere.
I can confirm, as a dog walker, that many pubs are very happy to allow dogs in a bar area where food is being served. Restaurants are a different matter and I have no problems with that but a pub in the middle of nowhere should attempt to cater for all comers and supply some sort of basic bar area which can be avoided by those who prefer to eat without dogs around them. It would appear that the Twice Brewed just wishes to appeal to one type of customer.

A Haven.....
As a regular, but not frequent, visitor to the Twice Brewed, I cannot agree with Nick's view of this pub. I've been there as a walker, a motorist and from the 'dig' at the nearby Roman Vindolanda. In spring and in high summer.
The staff are always pleasant and courteous. The choice and quality of the ale first class and the food I've had has definitely been 'as described'. Given the huge mix of customers, most of whom are one-offs, I think the Twice Brewed does a great job.
As for mobile phones, you find most sensible walkers carry one. I'd rather people used them outside but more than that, I'd rather dog owners kept their darlings out of areas were I am to eat.

A nice pub
I visited the twice brewed on August bank holiday. Had a great time. Good beer and food. A mix of walkers and car drivers out for the night, also a few from the near by YHA. Good all round pub and place to get warm

Busy cos it's a one pub village
You must have had a few beers to call this pub 'lovely'. I suspect these last two visitors arrived by car. I wasn't miserable when I arrived at Twice Brewed after walking in the rain. Walking does not make you miserable. I was looking forward to a few beers in a traditional country pub and chatting with fellow walkers about the day's journey.
I live in a village where both pubs serve food and allow dogs. I think you'll find that the norm is to allow dogs in foodie pubs as long as you don't let them wander in the kitchen! I think you'll find that pubs that don't allow dogs are more or less restaurants. Once Brewed deserves an inn not a restaurant.
I'm sure that Twice Brewed could make a healthy profit on walkers, cyclists and horse riders alone without catering for the 'c'mon luv lets drive out to the country and have a bar meal' clientele.
True walkers who arrive on foot would probably avoid this place if there was a proper pub next door.

I agree with Peter
I have stayed at Twice Brewed many times. The food is always great - Veggie alternatives are always available. Beer is good and also the Fentimans Ginger Beer. And if you are staying there they will give you blankets instead of a duvet, if you ask. Fab base for The Wall, Northumberland Coast or The Solway - rarely wet on both sides.

Nick doesn't seem to know what he's talking about!
I came across this note and thought that Nick has put a wrong light on this lovely pub. I also went in July with my son and found that the pub was extremely busy(I think that if anyone was turned away, it was because they couldn't fit anymore in) . I found everyone helpful to our needs, though there was a little wait everything came out piping hot and was delightful. There was a good selection of local ales to choose from. The Conquest (Redburn bewery) was a particular favourite. I like my beer!!
I think when your wet and miserable things always look different. I definitely recommend this place.... Oh, by the way most food places won't allow dogs in.

It's the Crossroads Motel!
Worst pub in the North of England! Me, my mate and the dog walked 20 miles of Hadrian's Wall in pouring rain, pitched up at nearby campsite, then went there in search of hearty meal and rambler's fireside only to be told they'd stopped serving food and no dogs allowed. This was in July. Pub is carpeted and has wall brasses and run for motorists. If you arrive at a pub and there's loads of blokes outside on mobile phones you know it ain't a walkers' pub. Not a friendly welcome. Forget it. If only there was another one near by.
