Great looking and unspoilt traditional pub in a scenic location in St Albans. Large beer garden out back, and a number of tables at the front. Real ales are served as are regularly changing guest ales. A good selection of bar snacks and full meals are available. Wednesday nights are Steak and Quiz Night

Bloody Brilliant
I visited this pub with my girlfriend for my birthday and I have nothing but praise for this gorgeous place. I love the setting, the beers, the food and the staff were fantastic, I mean really fantastic. Bar, waiting, kitchen, management and BBQ staff were all excellent. Highly reccomended.

Pub with atmosphere and Good Service
We visited on 11th Feb 2012 having booked in advance. We were a party of 6 and were pleasantly surprised at this busy pub.
Looking at earlier reviews the Ginger Headed Manager (described as a tit and w...ker) has left and has been replaced by a very customer orientated young american lady.
Beer selection good and wines sensibly priced.
Starters great and plentiful. Main courses were somewhat problematic as the pies came without lids and the potatoe topping was uncooked. We complained and the potatoe was replaced with chips and mash in a jiffy.
The mangeress was most apologetic and gave us a bottle of Rioja on the house as a gesture to resolve our cincerns. DID THE JOB!.
Desserts very tasty and we left feeling very well cared for.
Would recommend you to visit !.

Real character
A group of us often stroll over to this pub on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. The beer garden is great as it is really large and accomodating. Food - good, particuarly the plougmans lunch and nice selection of wines.

Very handy to the Cathedral and park, but Saturday 26 September service, although friendly, was very slow as it was fairly crowded. Food did the job but not brilliant. Nice to be able to eat in the back terraced garden and have a smoke as well. Beer OK.

Serious decline in food quality - dont eat here
Was one of our favourite pubs to visit with our dog but we wont be going back. The food quality has seriously declined. I think the fabulous manager that used to run the pub must have left because the food quality is now terrible for the price.
The 12 roast beef dinner wasnt fit for our dog! And i had a stomach ache all afternoon. Save your money for elsewhere.

Trisha hasn't got a clue.... And Dave's a contradiction... who cares what Americans think of it? It's perfect.

definatley a great family pub, allows kids and dogs and pipes! all good as i smoke, have three kids and two big dogs. there are not many pubs these days that accomodate all three! plus its in the park so can keep the family quiet while i sip my pint of bitter!

great family pub
we went back to the fighting cocks due to a recomendation from a friend, having not been there for some 10 years we were pleasently suprised to find a much better drinks hole than when last visited. the menu had a good selection of choices and the food warrented the prices as it was all very delicious. apparently all produce is cooked fresh to order, and sourced locally which makes a change from a lot of chain pubs these days. will definatley be back soon when visiting st albans. if only we didnt live so far away!!

worse food i& serive in St Albans
having booked a table arrived and purchase a 20 bottle of wine and was then told that most of the food on the menu was not available, basicaly only vey limited pub food. order fish & chips 9, at that price was expected it to be good. fish was under cook and in wet floury batter, upon complaining was told that the chef was happy with it so what was myproblem! Staff under quaified for a pub that wants to charge these prices.

It's Holywood, but Don't Knock it!
Oyez, oyez, welcome, kinde Syrre, to ye Old Fighting Cocks. Fine, but it doesn't cut much mustard for a real drinker. That said, ignore the theatrical clap-trap and you DO have a good pub, with a lovely interior and, in my experience, good beer, good food and good service. Well worth a visit, even if you don't have American friends visiting.

Historical note
We read this historical note outside Ye Olde Fighting Cocks

Reputed to have accommodated Oliver Cromwell for one night during the civil war, stabling his horse in what is now thought to be the bar area. The underground tunnels of the Inn providing useful bolt holes in Troubled times
