Booked but no record of our booking. Dark haired, heavy made up waitress didn't smile once and completely apathetic. Arrived at 1.10pm and served our meal at 2pm. Long wait for puds. Waiter cleared our table almost told us to go. Not a very pleasant experience. Suggest some staff training wouldn't go amiss.

Excellent
Visited the restaurant on a busy Saturday evening at the end of June. We had a table booked for five. The beer was excellent, the starters were excellent (I had mackerel), the main dishes were excellent (I had fish pie) and the sweets were the same. The service was also excellent and we didn't have to wait long for our food. Definitely would go again. Well done!

DONT GO!!!!!!!!!!
this was ment to be romantic weekend away as it was my partners birthday and first weekend away after having my new baby. we arrived to a very rude bar lady who took our drink order then said go wait at end of bar to be booked it!! she then proceeded to serve 5 other people while we stood there. The room had not been hoovered there was cheesey biscuits over the floor, the bin was full from previous people and the cushion on bed was covered in make up. we went back to bar where we waited and waited for a drink, the bar was packed and only one poor girl serving beleive her name was natasha!!!!! she was getting alot of flack and we felt very sorry for her. Dinner well once again poor natasha was doing everything which ment we waited half an hour for a menu then for a drink and finally after ordering food it arrived one and half hours later freezing cold. in the mean time i had been to the bar as there was no hand soap in the ladys loos or toilet roll!! the staff said that there was soap but they did not know how to put it in. hour later still no soap so a lad behind the bar gave me a glass with soap in. After my third vist to loo i complained to the manager who said ive done it well clearly this was not the case. what worrys me is every person eating who had been to the loo had not used soap!!!! i hope that your staff are more bothered about washing there hands while cooking our food and making our drinks.all around us people were complaining about food being cold, not cooked and one poor family with two small children waited two hours for dinner. u really need to visit this lodge and sort out staffing problems (ie lack of and manners) also cleanliness. Having just had a baby which means money is precious to us at the moment and paying out 50 for a room we are so disappointed at our stay and feel very let down!!! pls reply

Has it hit rockbottom this time?
The restaurants in the Vintage Inns chain vary significantly over time. For a while they are good but then poor again.

The Colney Fox has recently switched from it's long standing 'order at bar' method to table service. This would seem to be a major error. The quality of service has deteriorated with very long waits for food and drinks. The friendly waitress kept repeating her excuse of 'I entered it on the computer'. However she never bothered to check the situation and we had to keeping pointing out that we were still waiting.

When it was discovered that a chicken dish was still raw she wanted to take it away but we refused and called the manager. We informed him that if any sickness followed we would take action including notifying the council's Environmental Health dept.

The sweets were OK. We'd already decided not to give a tip on this occasion and expected a reduced charge, however when we requested the bill we were informed that there wouldn't be one.

Terrible food
Today, 12/6/11, we had lunch at the Colney Fox, 4 adults and a 13 yr old. The decor was ok, but I drew the short straw with the food! I had the mixed seafood grill, what an expensive mistake. It was atrocious, the fish smelled strong the whole thing was hopeless, but I ate the 2 aspargus! I then decided to have the Sicilian lemon sponge thinking it would be delicious light and soft. Wrong, it would have been easier to eat a brick, it was cold and hard! Third mistake was to end the meal with a cappucino, it was so bitter and disgusting. The bill excl tip was 89,for pub food that is a lot. Will we be going back? Absolutely not. The pub has seriously let itself down in the food dept. I person had steak which was so-so, 2 people had hamburgers and 1 had some sort of nut roast. I think management should eat the food they are presenting to the public, maybe then they would see how bad it is.
Today was not value for money, the only great thing was the company we were in!

Terrible food
I took a lady there last night and it was embarrassing.
Where to start? The glasses and table were dirty. The scallops for starter were overcooked or old (or both). My pate was just about acceptable, although the bread that came with it was stale.
There is a choice of only 3 White wines (what happened here?) and the one we chose was ordinary, but more importantly it was served at almost room temperature, not chilled.
My main course of sea bass was overcooked and the vegetables sloppy. My friends's duck confit was a very bad joke. Obviously frozen duck leg slung into a deep fat fryer. It was like shoe leather and the last straw.
All in all, this terrible meal took 2 and a half hours.
I told the waitress we would pay for the wine and the starters (we didn't complain when the starters came, although we should have) but we would not be paying for the mains. She was completely unsurprised, like it happened all the time.
The food here used to be very good. WHAT HAPPENED?

Mr Cooper
awful food, poor service
We Visited the Colney Fox on Tuesday 12th August. After a poor service at the bar, three of us decided to order different meals. I had the beef and mushroom guiness pie, and the others went for greek chicken and lemon chicken. Although we did not have to wait long (the restaurant was not at all busy, surprising on such a nice evening) I was very impressed when my meal was brought to our table, the pie looked huge and I was hungry! This was followed by immediate disappointment when I took the first mouthful of pastry from the top of the pie and realised that the pie was not at all a pie, just a very large ceramic dish with a puff pastry top. Some would say a pie in disguise. Inside the pie I discovered that the so called 'beef' was also not as expected. It was actually 5 lumps of gristle with a small amount of meat attached to two lumps, all swimming around in gravy. Unlike the immediate satisfaction I received when first seeing my dish, the other dishes were an immediate disappointment to my family. Both sounded lovely on the menu but when arrived were really just a small amount of chicken surrounded in pasta sauce. We all left feeling very hungry and disappointed. Will not return to this restaurant.

Some years ago The Colney Fox was our favourite pub/restaurant but sadly went on the decline.About 18 months ago we tried it again and it was to put it mildly 'dreadful'. However last week we thought we would give it another try, big mistake, we ordered starters and main courses for 3, the order must have all been prepared at the same time, the starters were acceptable but not good by any standard, the main courses were tired and dried out, peas on the verge of going black, chips that must have been waiting for ages and of course one order completely wrong, with no real apology from the waitress and a considerable wait for the replacement it finally arrived and was barely edible, a little tip if you go to the Colney Fox defintitely don't have the seafood pasta....you will be ill. There was insufficient cutlery and we had to borrow some from another table, what cutlery we had was far from clean
all in all the service was bad the food a little better and it will be some considerable time before we will visit what was once our favourite eatery.

Thank you Manager Derrick Fiddes for asking us back to the Pub in which you gave us the opportunity to give The Colney Fox another chance after the bad experience we had there on the Sat 10th Jan '09. We were invited back on Friday 30th Jan '09, and we all had the most wonderful evening, you have completly changed everything around, the food was wonderful, served quick and hot, the staff were on the ball, friendly and efficient and there was a great atmosphere so thank you all and keep it up, and we will be back. So glad we decided to come back and give you another chance, it was definitely worth doing so!

Appaling Service
Six of us visited The Colney Fox 8.30 pm on Saturday 10th January 2009. We all used to visit quite regularly but hadn't been for serveral weeks. We managed to get our drinks and order our food. Two of our friends had their food brought up after 35/40 mins, on asking at the bar where the rest of the food was the girll said she didn't know and it wasn't her fault and had a very 'couldn't-care-less' attitude! No one came near nor by us and there was no apology from any staff. After askng serveral times and nearly an hour and a half later we asked to see the Manager and was told HEwas busy in the kitchen. We all insisted he came out. A young girl came out and said the food would be ready shortly! We all had had enough by this tine and left just before 10 pm. Needless to say we will not be visiting any time soon! I have written and emailed the next day but like their service, there has been no reply or response.

My family and I decided to organise a nice festive lunch on Christmas Eve! We had a table booked for 7 people at 2pm - we arrived at 1.55pm to a VERY confused waitress who didn't seem to know who we were and why we were there! After explaining in simple terms that we had booked a table and pre-booked from the festive menu 6 weeks ago. The table was in a separate part of the restaurant and we were left on our own and forgotten about. We were very surprised there were no decorations or Christmas crackers anywhere to be seen. After waiting for 35 minutes we managed to order our drinks. After a further 10 minutes (45 mins after we arrived) our starters arrived - the mushrooms (and plate) were stone cold! - We sent them back to a very unapologetic waiter and they reappeared on the same plates which were still very cold. After 1 hour and 15 mins still no sign of our main courses or any enquiry on how we would like our steaks cooked! We also noticed the cutlery was filthy and had dried -on brocolli on one.. We had had ENOUGH and decided to leave. Very disappointed and really spoilt Christmas Eve.

Very Disappointed
We booked a festive menu for 18 people. Upon arrival, the tables were not laid out (although we did arrive early). We were told that they just had to wipe the tables, the plain serviettes and cutlery were standing in a pewter jug in the centre of the table, very drab looking. There were no crackers or festive serviettes. A barmaid confirmed that this was how it was, 15.95 was good value so the festivities were the christmas decorations in the pub and christmas music (which you could not hear). The Duty Manager confirmed this was the case, but I have to say, they made an effort after that to lay the table so it was presentable.
The food, however, was very poor, the prawns were tasteless, steaks were returned not cooked properly. Gravy was poured all over the turkey dinner (not a very nice taste), yorkshire puds were rock hard, and as for the desserts, well, the portions were appalling. Xmas pud was a one mouthful dish.
Luckily enough for us each others company was good so the evening was not spoilt altogether.
One person even said it was the worst meal she had ever had. Most people since have complained about the food.
Needless to say, we will not be eating there next Christmas.

very dissappointed
Haviing just 1 hour for lunch it took 45 minutes for a BLT sandwich and chips to arrive. When it did the presentation was awful - cold and lank and very unappetising. After complaining a new sandwich was brought out that was at least warm but not much better presemted. What happended to the lovely thick white doorstop sandwiches you used to prepare. Very very disappointed. My friends cheese sandwich was a joke. Had trouble findinf the cheese. The steak sandwich was cold and raw. What's happening to the Colney Fox - if that is the standard of the sandwiches - what the hell are their meals like!

I have been to tne Colney Fox twice now and found the food good and good value, but not great. The off-putting thing both times was the slow service and meals arriving at separate times, coffee forgotten etc. Meeting friends there because it's convenient, but will be looking elsewhere if this doesn't improve.

I recently went to the Colney Fox with 5 friends for dinner. We had such a lovely experience. All of the staff were so friendly and the food was cooked to perfection and the portions were huge! I eat out 4 times a week and i must say the Colney Fox is my favourite place, its great value for money and has such a warm and friendly atmosphere. Everyone i recommend it to goes and also have lovely experiences too. My daughter and her boyfriend went the other day and she had a 12oz sirloin steak which she said was the best steak she had eaten in years. Her boyfriend had fillet of salmon which he said he enjoyed greatly. I would like to share my experienceswith this site and recommend this pub. It also has hotel rooms which i have once stayed in with my husband and are lovely. I couldn't think of a nicer pub and look forward to returning next week!!

Thursday 7th December
I went to the Colney Fox for an evening meal for my birthday. It was very busy as there was an 18th birthday party there. My daughter ordered a medium to well done steak, when it arrived and she cut into it, it was dripping blood which soaked into the chips. I managed to get hold of a waitress who took it back to the kitchen and they re-cooked the steak and put it back on the same plate. She was unable to eat any of the meal. My son and myself had linguine which was sticky and had been covered in pepper. We were unable to get hold of a waiter to complain so left after 30 minutes.

by the way...
If you have 20-25 tables outside and a further 10 or so inside catering for diners, each with menus and catered for by waitresses you are not just a pub, you're an establishment set up to serve food.

I'd like to think you are appalled at the bad service people have had but instead you are appalled that people have left such comments.

Thanks for being everything that is wrong about pub dining.

Hi Will.

If I were you I'd be doing everything I could to get the quality of the food up to scratch, rather than trying to justify the poor standards. Isn't it nice to see a cook take real pride in their work.

It's a pub what do you expect. Thank you, Will, for confirming everyone's comments. It's nice to hear from the horse's mouth that the food is sub-par and they have no interest in making it any better.

You really should look for another job if you take that little pride in your work.

I happen to be a chef at the fox and i am appalled at the comments left on this site. im sorry but the fox is not a luxury restaurante where you are supposed to wear a suit and tie! And yet you people continue to complain about the quality of the food. Just so some of you are not being mislead the colney fox is a PUB. thats right, a pub where nothing is ever perfect. it takes time to cook the various meals and sometimes they are not perfect. but when have you ever gone into a pub and found the meal perfect?

Everythign that's bad about pub eating
The pub itself is perfectly nice - a few tables inside and a busy patio where you never feel cramped. That's about it for the good points. The menu reads like a who's who of 80's pub diining: prawn cocktail, fish and chips, burger, steak and kidney pie, lasagne...you get the idea. The food is a notch, a very small notch, above your standard pub fare. We just had a meal for 5 - all the chips that came out were luke warm and leathery, the lamb burger didn't taste any meat I've ever tasted and everything was criminally overcooked.

Not knowing how inept the kitchen was, I ventured for the liver and bacon, knowing that it is quite lovely when cooked well. Talk about back to schooldays with a grey, tepid and limp slab of what once was liver sitting on a pile of luke-warm mash with some peas and a suspiciously packet-tasting gravy.

I left the majority of it and it was passed around the table so everyone could take themselves back to those heady days of school canteens. At the end ofthe meal I sneaked inside to have a quick word with the asst-manager, jsut to see if he could have a word with the chef about the overdone liver so it woulnd't happen again. The guy didn't seem interested at all. Granted, he apologised but his words were as follows,

It's difficult to get it crisp on the outside and pink on the inside so basically it's luck which way it comes out and if it comes out like that then you were jsut unlucky

INot one offer to take it off the bill, not one offer to take any of this back to the chef and I left feeling like it was as waste of time as this guy clearly didn't really care what quality of food comes out of his kitchen as long as you pay the bill at the end.

He succeeded in losing our company's future business, there are several other places to eat in the area.

A total waste of time and money unless you are satisfied with cheap and nasty chainpub food.

Not Bad - Not Great
The Colney Fox suffers from the fact that it's part of a chain. The food look pre-prepared and the beer just the normal.

I've had a range of service them from great to poor, but it's still an Ok pub. Over 6 years, I've been in a lot of times as friends are local and nothing had happened which doesn't want me to not to go back.

Sadly A big let down
I went to for Lunch on Monday 29th May 2006 (Bank holiday) and was very disappointed. The Breaded Mushroom starters were feeble (4 mushrooms) and were also cold. Then after 50 minutes the Mains had still not arrived. All the other tables that ordered after us had finished their meals and we had been forgotten about. We left without having the rest of our meal but it has to be said that the Manager was very reasonable and we quite rightly didn't pay a penny. I look forward to returning again soon as I know this is normally a good place to eat - Sadly it seems it needs a good kick up the rear to sort it out at the moment.
