Excellent food!!
After a very long journey from Birmingham to Durham to visit our daughter at University, we were extremely hungry and chose this pub solely for the carvery advertisement, also we hadn't eaten all day!
The service was excellent, we were informed of the new management and would like to say a big well done. The chef was friendly and calved to perfection!! The vegetables were very fresh and the gravy was superb.
The atmosphere was friendly and relaxed and overall the pub seemed like a wonderful family spot for a hearty sunday roast!
A big thank you to the staff, the hard working waitress especially! We left a big tip and bid farewell. We are visiting our daughter again in March. We hope to visit again.
Thanks again

under new management
This pub has now got new managers after its mishaps and seems to be turning round again, Carole and Philip are the friendliest hosts i have had the pleasure of meeting and as a bonus - the pub is completely no smoking......give it a go you will be very suprised.

I visited this pub 2 weeks ago and I must say I wish I had not.

There seems to be a pattern here of bad comment, good comment so I can only guess the good comments are coming fro staff or friends of staff.

Its not worth the treck out of Durham however I would treck away if it was my local.

Avoid if you have the choice
My first experience of this pub will be the last.

I was in the pub while on a business trip and held an informal meeting there.

While there the following things happened.

1). One of the chef was rude to a customer over something as silly as roast potatoes and the lack of mash.

2). I heard said staff member (while in the kitchen) insulting said customer, he didnt seem to realise you could hear everything from the Carvery que.

One of the customers group talked with the chef who then appologised for his comments.

3). Fro that point on said customers had drinks waiting at the bar while staff stood around chatting. The staff walked past said customers and id they took an order, it either stood at the bar or the order was left unfulfilled.

4). The bill for said customer was wrong.

5). When said group of customers left one of the staff (now off duty and sitting in the pub) made a comment about one of the girls legs.

All in all I thought the staff were lazy and unmotivated. The only motivation they demomstrated was to ignore said group of customers.

The behaviour of the staff really let doen the pub which on the whole I thought was ok.

As I said, I was there on a business meeting and was looking for a place to hold further ones.

If the manager of owner reads this, your staff from sat 12th Nov have forced me to take my business elsewhere. I was only planning 2 or 3 informal meeting a month wiht maybe only 5 people each time so you may not consider this much of a loss.

If anyone reading this knows which brewery runs this pub then please post a comment as I would like to let said brewery know about this pub.

Sunday Lunch
I've eaten here a few times on Sundays and always found the food very tasty and plentiful. It's great for people with large appetites as the self service carvery means you can fill your plate. The meat is always cooked to perfection and there is certainly not a shortage of it! Staff are friendly and helpful, if not overly so, and the surroundings are comfortable and pleasant. You could do an awful lot worse than this for a lazy Sunday lunch.

carvery for 2 on 8th June 18.30
possibly the worst meal I have had for I can't remeber when!
Roast potatoes cindered, bought yorkshire puddings which had been kept warm for ages, couldn't eat, the beef was atrocious, stringy. Asked to have turkey instead and when got that, rest of dinner cold and it was processed turkey which was slimy and tasted of nothing. Had to keep waving off flies. If they were in the dining room they must have been on the food waiting to be served. Told the 2 kids who served and took the money and got a half hearted sorry. Used to go frequently last year, don't know what has happenned but won't be a visitor again.Only good thing was the no smoking policy
