Fantastic carvery,excellent and friendly service.
We've been coming to the Bowd Inn for many years with varying degrees of satisfaction but I have to say the current management team are doing a fantastic job. The pub is vibrant again with an outstanding carvery on offer every day and a level of service and quality to match, well done to all concerned! Great experience.

Beautiful Meal and Excellent Serice
I have been to the bowd now on many different occasions. Some with small groups some as much larger functions and on all occasions the food and service has been excellent. Yes the portions are a bit small but when having a three course meal they are the perfect size and feel you up with out making you feel sluggish. It beats all other Sidmouth pubs and restaurants hands down!

We did go back - oh dear!
Went back for another jazz evening and this time it was a lot busier and a lot less efficient. Long delays for the food to come out, apparently complicated because one of had a starter and hadn't told the waitress we had finished!
Food was nicely cooked & presented but it wasn't a relaxed evening - such a shame after a promising beginning.

More recent review
Visited the Bowd a few weeks ago when there was a jazz event on. Four of us sat down to a very well priced and well presented meal, beautifully cooked and served by friendly staff. Nothing was too much trouble. The jazz was fantastic although the pub wasn't very busy as it was the start of the Sidmouth Folk Frstival but we will certainly be back.

Ghastly Experience
Went to this Pub in December with friends. Ordered a meal which arrived in good time on a plate which looked like an inverted sunhat. Very deep centre section where the food sat all cramped in the centre of the plate surrounded by the edge of the plate which was few inches wide and totally unsuitable to put food on. I was very disappointed with this whole meal (quantity) and presentation. I let this experience go and put it down to a one off bad experience.
I had forgotten the above and went again this last week. The same thing happened again. Terrible plates, poor presentation, quantity of food for the price very poor.
Observation: Very Expensive....
Observed a group of people 60+ Who came in and sat down looked at the menu for a few minutes. They must have seen the silly prices so they got up and left. I should have done this also but unfortunately I had already ordered my meal. Never Again...
The Blue Ball wins hands down....

Value for money
We are travelling from Penzance to Lyme Regis camping, we visited the Bowd last night on our way to setting up camp,
this has been the best meal we have had on our trip, home cooked, huge portions and very reasonably priced, will certainly be visiting the Bowd again and recommending it to our friends.
Huge play area for the children and dog friendly!!

Thank you and good luck to the new proprietors who we found friendly and very welcoming.

Thank you
We have a very similar destination pub in Bristol and came away for a few days with the family, we had dinner at the Bowd and found it exceptional, we all had steak, it was cooked to perfection, thank you for an enjoyable evening!!! The Eton Mess was amazing, we have certainly picked up a few tips! Will be visiting again in March.

Happy staff happy customers
The atmosphere at The Bowd is lovely. The staff are bright and sunny and the decor is welcoming. The food has improved so much over the last few months, I had the best steak ever!! At last they have brought us quality local food at decent prices. The new staff members are charming, a GREAT improvement all round, the new owners deserve a big thumbs up!!!

The New Owners Have Made a Big Difference
Visited the Bowd Inn in Sidmouth last week and was very pleasantly surprised. New Decor which is warm and inviting, new menus which are great and the whole place is so much more inviting. I had the steak which was spot on! Definitely recommended!

We visited the Bowd Inn today and had a fantastic meal we all loved the choice of food for adults and children. The bar and waiting staff were all very welcoming polite and helpful. We also met the owner’s who have Lhasa apso dogs they brought down their puppy and the children fell in love instantly, they were a very friendly couple. After lunch the children let off steam in the great play area We will be going back again very soon.

Lovely evening at the charming Bowd Inn
As it was my mum's 80th birthday we decided to take her out for dinner to the Bowd Inn. We haven't been to the Bowd since Mother's day and must say we were pleasantly surprised with the new decor, menu and excellent service we received. We had the exmoor rump steak which was very tender, I must say was one of the best steaks I have ever had and Mum was delighted with her Lyme bay crab cakes, we loved the fact that they now use fresh local produce and reasonably priced we will certainly be going back there again.

Bowd Inn, Sidmouth
We have been going to the Bowd Inn for many years, but will not be returning. The attitude of the male bar person - Neil maybe his name, is to say the least appalling. We had a problem with the food we ordered and pleasantly asked to see the manager. A woman, who I believe is the proprietor's wife was very wishy-washy with my complaint, so I asked to speak to the chef. He appeared with an air of utter arrogance and rudeness. It turned out he WAS the proprietor and the woman prevoiusly mentioned was his wife. The bar lady who was there has always been so polite and helpful, but the barman, on this occassion - so rude. I just wonder when so many businesses are trying to survive in this day and age that people who take these type of businesses on, cannot stop and look at where they are going so wrong with their attitude to the GBP and holiday visitors. I will never come back again to a pub that I have known and been to for many years, it has not been the same lovely olde worlde pub for the past few months, maybe a year since these arrogant, non-professional people took on the place. VERY DISAPPOINTED.

I am a local to the town of Sidmouth, and I have personally been going to the Bowd Inn for quite some years now. The previous owners had the Bowd just right with a fast efficent menu which was good value for money, and the service was excellant. However since the new owners have arrived, I feel that the menu is fussy and NOT in keeping with the age of the pub, and would be better suited in a small bistro place. As a local, over the summer months I have noticed it was alot quiter within the pub and it's large garden area compared to other years where it was always so packed it was a huge struggle to even locate a table, which proves to me that something has gone badly wrong with the place. However some changes I do agree with, which is the decor, yes it is warm and welcoming, but would be extremely nice if the owners matched and adopted the same attitude. I wiill not be visiting this public house again. Very disappointed.

As the new proprietors of the Bowd Inn we were very concerned about the last comment that was added on Sunday 25th July 2010.

We can assure you that over the last 6 months we have really turned this pub around, by decorating adding warmth and charm. The menu has been changed using all local productts and most of our dishes are prepared and cooked to order which is proving to be very popular with our customers.

After investigating Sunday evening we are sorry that we did not meet her expectations on this occassion. However, after our staff meeting we found that this lady was served spaghetti instead of penne, which we do apolgise as the waitress was not aware that we had sold out of penne and was substituted by spaghetti.

It was my evening off and I had committments with my children and although I briefly went ito the bar and over heard this lady talking to 2 members of staff, I felt they were dealing with her appropriately, giving her apologies and complimentary drink, therefore did not find it necessary to interrupt.

I am aware that this lady demanded to speak to the head chef, who is not the proprietor, and that his attitude may have been a little short which we do apologiise, unfortunately he had been working under a lot of pressure after a very busy evening and as we all know chefs can be rather strerssful!

We do respect everyones feedback, so if you have any comments please let us know.

what a sad end to a good day
me and my family visted the bowd inn today with some friends and placed an order for food. we have been coming to this pub for 8 years and we will never go back here again . when our food come out we was told that they had ran out of the type of pasta we was ment to have and gave us a different type and the rest of the food was cold we did say at the time but nothing was done apart from they heated the kids food up,i went in to talk to the girl behind the bar who was very nice and there was a lady there too, when the lady left i asked to see the manager to be told that lady stood there was the manager i was in shock !!!!!!! and the girl said the lady has just drove off out ummmmmmmmmmm so i asked to see the chef who was the rudest man you could ever meet he didnt even say sorry all he said was well i had 75 checks on at the time your order come in and when i said i would never come back he said good and that if people like me want to complain then he would more than happy for then never to come bk i also said you cant say that to customers and told him to go bk to his kitchen and i would take it up with the boss later and he told me to leave the pub . all i can say is i would be glad to leave this pub as its clear there are new people running this pub and its a dear shame as it was once a fantastic place to go. i was told by one of the girls that the chef is the new owner so be aware that the new people dont care about what the customers want or how they feel this is the worst i have ever come across avoid this pub !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great Home cooked food
Recently we had a lovely lunch at the Bowd Inn near Sidmouth. I understand this is now under new management! Paul & Belinda's hospitality was exceptional and very welcoming, the menu was very good value for money. This is a very interesting pub with a log fire and the cheeky parrot. I must mention the food which was wonderful. A great find wish we lived locally but will look them up next time we are visiting Bowd/Sidmouth

Disappointing carvery
We visited the Bowd Inn today (12th Sept) about 12.30p.m. My husband's steak and ale pie with veg was excellent but whatever went wrong with the carvery? The beef was superb but the cauli and leeks had been overcooked goodness knows what time (I know the leeks were fresh because the grit was still in them). Most disappointing of all was that after waiting for a new batch of roast potatoes, they were not even cooked through, never mind roasted. The fresh batch of parsnips were ok but the gravy resembled wallpaper paste in texture. I would have said something at the time, but by the time the problem became apparant, the dark lady I took to be in charge was busy behind the bar.

Very hands-on manager
Stopped off for a meal on Sunday night. Despite it being one of their busiest days of the year, they still managed to serve a decent meal with a smile. Congratulations to the manager Ruth who obviously runs a tight ship.

We recently visited the bowd inn were extremely impressed with the quality of food and especially the courtesy of the staff, As a result have made a booking for my parents golden wedding anniversary on easter saturday. A very special place. As for the detrimental comments listed by some sad people here I suggest you pay them a visit and make up your own mind.

Quality Pub Lover
Since recently being taken over by new managment the Bowd has improved dramatically with friendly, welcoming staff, a high standard of service and excellent food. Also serve delicious authentic carvery every day and provide QUALITY real Ales. I think the writer of the previous comment may have got the Bowd mistaken with another pub!

Wanting back the older days
No Thank you
Rude and obnoxious staff make this pub my 2nd least favourite in the Sidmouth area. The Food is dredful as the carvery unit does not even keep it warm, let alone hot. Really dissapointed, it used to be a nice place to pass an odd afternoon but not anymore.

great truely great
having been to most of the pubs around this area for a town centre pub the black horse far exceeds any other pub in town for both quality, and service, and for the best pub around period i agree with the first comment that the bowd is fantastic, its real fire and great food combined with friendly staff make it a great dining experience, it seems to be improving constantly this may be due to the fact that its under new managment,
