About the Pub
The Fleece has gone through a few makeovers in the past years. On a recent visit I thought it was looking ready for another as some of the furnishings were looking a bit dowdy. The ambiance of years gone by seems to have vanished although I noticed some of the original regulars are still holding the fort. The food however was quite good even though the menu has lost some of it's past choice. I am sure the large beer garden and childrens play area will still prove to be a popular venue for families on a good summers day as it always has been.

Not Good and getting worse by the day!
Since the new management team took over a couple of months ago this pub has begun to fail badly. The atmosphere is bad, its cold and draughty, and you are lucky if you can find a decent pint to drink, thats when they have some! No-one eats in here any more, unless they dont know any better. The food takes ages to arrive, and you are lucky if you get what you order! On Christamas Eve(2012) they had bouncers on the doors, the pub was full of people who I have never seen before, and the drunken landlord was stood on a door knocking back the regulars!..because the pub was full of drunken kids, it looked like a scene from Shameless! Complete amateurs, the two people running this pub at present, they have absolutely no idea how to run a good local pub. So my advice is dont go there again until a proper manager takes over and things improve dramatically!.

i went to the fleece last night as i have done several times before, (not my choice, just because it is nearby for non drivers!)i have never been impressed with the food but it its just cheap pub grub and 'ok' yet again the food was eddible, my complaint however is about the cleanliness of the pub, i was sat in the conservatory area and whilst waiting for our food and glancing around i (and others) couldnt help but notice the filthy walls, floors, chairs, carpet, lamp etc etc it really is in need of a very very good clean, there are drink/food splatters all the way up the walls, the skirting boards and the radiators are black, there was chips, napkins and general muck on the floor all around and under the tables and the lamps were stained infact everything was, it is pure filth!! at first glance however this is a lovely homely pub and is just in need of a good clean up!

happy customer
The Fleece has improved alot the food is alot better as is the beer. People who complain quite often have never worked in a bar, and its often us customers who make life alot more difficult for the staff. ive seen many customers walk in on a busy fri nite and complain when they havent been served within 2mins, but they wud be complainin if it was quiet as there wud be no atmosphere. It also really impresses the staff when all those customers decide to stay hours after drinking up then wonder why the staff are in a bad mood, i wonder how many of you work after your finishin time with no extra pay?? People complain about the pub being a untidy but the number of customers ive seen purposly makin a mess, especially in the mens toilets. I think most the staff are gud but when they are spoken by rude customers who act as thought they r beneath them im not surprised they have a face on I wud if i had to put up with it! just glad i drink there not work there!!!

Terrible service
After reading an earlier review below we decided to give the Fleece another chance in the hope it had improved. Unfortunately it hasn't. We waited at the bar to be served while the young barman was completing an order with a customer, as no one else was waiting to be served I presumed we would be dealt with next!!! but no. a gentleman who arrived after us was the lucky one, even though there was another member of staff behind the bar we were still left waiting whilst she continued to do 'something' more important than serving thirsty customers. After a further wait and no acknowledgment from either staff we decided to leave. I find it very disappointing that living in Penwortham for 46 years we can't call this our 'local' and enjoy good food and beer on our doorstep. However, after leaving the Fleece we decided to try the Tom Finney which was a wonderful change from the miserable atmosphere in the Fleece. The staff were very pleasant, welcoming and chatty and the beer - moorhouses blonde witch and premier were excellent, the food was nice and delivered with a smile. After a few pints we left feeling happy we had been in a good pub with real ale, friendly staff and decent food yet sad that the Fleece has never been able to boast such qualities and doesn't look like doing so in the near future, unless it changes hands.

Customer Service?????
I have been here for lunch a few times and its been OK/good. However, today they had a big party in... The Lady in Charge had a serious attitude problem and when we asked how long it would take she said they were busy and looked at us like it was our fault for asking. The jacket potato wasn't cooked but the other meals were ok at best but this I assume because they are under pressure. Try treaing your staff decently with respect never mind your customers. I'm not sure I would return after this visit.

Dont Bother
As myself and a friend popped in for lunch after a hard mornings work we both decided to order some food which we had been told had improved. As we got served with our drinks after 15 mins we then chose a table to sit down and take a look at the delicious menu as we did that we found that the tables were dirty sticky and obviously not been cleaned my friend then decided to put some vinegar on the table to get rid of the dirt.We tried other tables but they all seemed to be the same.I can say i will not be going there again.

A regular (again)
Vast Improvements
Forget all previous bad comments, The Fleece Inn is now worth a visit to see how much Chris, the new manager, has improved all aspects of this local.
Before Chris arrived last summer the food was atrocious, the place was filthy and the bar staff were poor to average.
The food is now high quality pub fare, the steaks are always cooked to perfection from rare through to well done (why?).
The beer is now served properly and there are some excellent bar staff.
When you get chance pop in and try.

Abysmal service
This is my nearest pub, God i wish the brewery would sort it out ! I agree with all other comments about staff including management. The staff are more interested in talking to each other than serving customers. My wife and I went in one saturday afternoon and although we were the only people at the bar the two staff ignored us and continued to laugh and joke with each other, until someone else approached the bar and one of them asked who's next !!! A good bar person should know who's next. Someone needs to kick some arse in there, starting at the top. Last week the bar was full and one of the bar girls was filling the shelves with crisps rather than serving. They really are clueless. Mind you they don't half jump to it when one of the regulars (saddos) approaches the bar, preferring to serve them than anyody else. They should never have got rid of the vault either. I have been in there when families are dining yards from swearing oafs watching football on the TV.

Great service!
My wife and I came for a meal on 13th September. She ordered a well done steak but when it arrived it was pink inside. We called over the waitress who was most apologetic and took it away. She returned with a new steak (we thought it would be the same one just cooked more!) plus new chips and trimmings. She also offered us each a free drink. I ordered a pint of Stella Artois and my wife a glass of Merlot. When I tasted mine it turned out to be cider! I called over the waitress again and she replaced it without fuss, again apologising profusely.
I was very impressed my the standard of service and the meals.
I will be going again...

time to get a grip!
Well what can i say and where do i start?! first the staff- is a smile too much ? no smiles but alot of choice words are exchanged between them, most in front of customers and not repeatable...what can you expect when they are not led by example. The manageress herself uses choice words and belittles the staff in front of customers- v.unprofessional. Secondly the food- could be better, it seems microwave food at its best- if you get the right order and on time! The pub itself needs redecorating and the loos needs updating, they are a disgrace. In such a nice area, i am disapointed to find this in the local pub. A let down. Whilst sat the pub i heard an elderly couple say they wouldnt be back. Mainly due to the staff and the food. Think the brewery need to take a grip of this pub pronto.

We live around the corner from here and regularly enjoy the lovely beer garden, however the food always has been poor, and some of the staff are a bit gormless. (one or two of the bar staff are very nice though). Never had good food there. it is a shame as they could make such a profit in this area.

Firstly I went for a meal and the food was not very nice. I mentioned it to the waitress who said she would tell the manager. I heard him say all these stuck up people do is winge then had a go at the poor waitress.
Went in the following week to witness a girl behind the bar being picked on by the deputy manageress, and called stupid and useless in front of the customers
