Very sad
I am very sad to learn that the Hog and Donkey is no more. I have some great memories of this gem of a pub. As with all great pubs, it lived and died by the Landlord. What a character! I remember him regailing us with the story of being operated on by a vet who had a nervous breakdown and posed as a surgeon in a hospital. Will never forget the car park... full of the landlords old bangers, nior will I forget the Babysham 'altar'. Went there in the mid-late 80's. Will raise a glass to the Hog when I next get a chance.

a place out of time
I lived just down the road from the Hog and Donkey for 3 years in the early 1980s

Dennis the landlord was ever accomodating and would serve drinks long after the then 11pm cutfew - 50% of his clients would come in after that time long after everyone else was shut

most were old car enthusiasts

dennis bore his RAF handlebar moustache with pride and was the first pub inn the region to install a space invaders machine - nobody to my knowledge ever got a high score replay

i returned in 2005 on a nostalgia trip from my new home in BC Canada and nothing had changed there was dennis looking a tad frailer but he beer was as good as ever

Frozen in Time
Visit on a fine day and view the collection of decaying vehicles outside by the car park. Very quirky. As is the interior. There's no corporate decor. Just the accumulated bits and pieces of domesticity stretching back decades. And let's not forget the beer, straight from the barrel and delicious. You almost expect to hear distant echoes of the BBC Light programme from a wireless.

Not many like this anymore.
A delightful reminder of a gentler age. No piped music, no food, no fruit machines, no pretentions, no huge car park, no screaming kids. Go there while you still can. Beer served straight from barrel. Once most rural pubs were like this, now there are only a handfull in the whole of Kent. Located a mile north of the better known 'Gate ' at Marshside. Grid ref. 225669
