Tom (Ryrie's) - Mar 2014
This traditional pub on the corner of a busy road junction next door to the Haymarket railway station attracts a lot of passing trade from shoppers, locals and tourists. The long, narrow bar has a brass footrail and half-barrels decorate the top of the gantry. At the far end of the bar is a small 'snug' style room. There are brass whisky water taps on the heavy old wood bar.

One of Edinburgh's oldest and finest
Ryrie's... The oldest bar in Haymarket but still the best, the place oozes in character and is not only situated in a prominent position in Haymarket but also holds a great deal of history and stands proud as a prominent piece of the forgotten Edinburgh among the tall concrete and metal buildings that we see today, the modern tramway center and new shiny metal train station which tower over the site of the old Caledonian Ale House are a fine example of what we stand to lose if we turn our backs on historical Edinburgh pubs such as this one. I have visited numerous times over the years and have also witnessed the pub change hands a number of times and now see the front face has turned blue, however the stripping of grey from the interior has regained much of the lost character from when it was painted grey. Ryrie's remains a strong sport center for Murrayfield and Tynecastle and vast improvements have been made since my last visit in 2013.. Improvements include that of staff and as I scroll down to previous comments involving old staff I must say that they are most likely true though again I am pleasantly surprised to see a new team of well mannered smartly presented uniformed staff now in place. Long live Ryrie's... Treat her well!!!!!

Cracking pint!
I visited Ryrie's on Monday and I have to say... WHAT AN IMPROVEMENT! Clearly under new management and some amount of work put in to freshen the place up... I enjoyed a great pint of Deuchars and my wife tried a Scottish Gin. Well done Ryrie's your back up there!

Food service shocking
Bought food from upstairs and waited easily 45 minutes to be served despite there being only one other couple.
After leaving the pub and most of the very poor food behind I felt ill and brought up what little food I had eaten.
Another couple left due to waiting too long on service.
The waitress tried very hard but as a whole the pace was a shambles.
The toilets were also disgusting.

Bad place
We have spent few days in Edinburgh during 6 Nations tournament in 2012. We wanted to have dinner in a typical scottish pub : what a disillusion !!! No scottish food but italian one : not bad but not good.
The only thing that is awesome is the outside front of the pub.

a good pub if you do not play fruit machines
I went there last night with a mate, played a fruit machine situated at door beside bar and went to toilet after losing 25 odd quid (big deal it happens) and after coming back my mate informed me a uniformed staff member named Cameron rushed up to it from behind the bar as soon as i had walked away proceeded to play it in between working and serving customers.
i took exception to this considering it's a bit off colour to see a staff member blatantly scam the machines/customers like that as soon as a customers back is turned and asked him if he was working which he denied though it was obvious he was and was wearing uniform, going back and forth behind bar serving food etc,
i just saw this as scamming behaviour and stated it so to him which he arrogantly chuckled at and 5 mins later when i tried to buy another drink and was told i would'nt be served by a staff member cos Cameron said so and after going up to him to find out what the actual problem was i was bemused to be told i was barred (for no stated reason) and to get out
so it's a fine pub as long as you do not question certain staff members if they are obviously scamming customers playing cash game machines and abusing positions of authority by issuing bans when a customer enquires what they are playing at as they simply throw you out whilst laughing arrogantly, it was a very chavvish way to behave and i expected better from a place that normally has a happy atmosphere most times but it has evidently gone slightly downhill recently.
