About the Pub
Sat on the corner of West Register Street at the East end of Princes Street the Guildford Arms is a busy Victorian pub which was originally built as a store house. It has a wonderfully ornate ceiling and gantry and a great viewing spot upstairs in the gallery, if you can grab a seat! There is a good bar menu available and a large selection of real beers and whiskies. No piped music during the day and a friendly staff make the Guildford a good meeting place for a night out or just a quiet chat.

The staff at the guildford are very nice and give excellent recomedations. Even in the busy festival period they were helpful and polite.

Poor service
I went in after shopping in Edinburgh on Saturday. The barman was downright rude and I walked out without staying to taste the beer. Additionally I find that the GA isn't what it once was (a great pub). The toilets are less than clean and the whole pub smells of stale ale. It's gone from one of my most favourite pubs to my most disliked. I'd choose the Cafe Royal any day.

Credit where credit is due
I like this pub a lot and would recommend it for a great choice of beers and generally a nice atmosphere.

Its location means that there is usually a mix of locals and tourists. There are doormen present, at least on Fri/sat night which is the only time I have been. This at least means that the clientele is reasonably well behaved!

Guildford
A super pub! Great selection of cask ales (Harvietoun Bitter & Twisted is HIGHLY recommended) there are also several continental brews available on draught as well. Beware of the revolving doors when you leave, they can be a bit difficult to negociate after a few pints...I speak from experience!!!

IDEAL first date location
I met Paul in a shop on the Royal Mile, and two days later we met for a date at the Guildford Arms in Edinburgh. We had a wonderful time, chatting late into the night. I didn't know it then, but it was a fateful meeting place for me. We will be married on May 21, 2005: a little over three years from our first date over a pint or two of Jack the Lad

Absolutly fabolous!
The nicest looking pub Ive ever been in apart from The Crown in Belfast.
About ten real ales to choose from, good whisky selection.
The interior is the real stunner though with a ceiling having to be seen to be believed, a nice wooden bar and lots of frosted glass.
Good mix of punters and friendly service.
Superb!

Ale paradise
You are spoilt for choice here. There is an ever changing range of real ales here.

There exist a real dutch pub in Amsterdam which has an even larger choice of beers from Germany, Belgium, Holland and Britain: In de Wildeman

Why I mention this? The Guildford is in Edinburgh's the place to taste Real ales from Scotland, England and Wales.
