About the Pub
Situated within yards of Edinburgh Castle this small pub is named after a young ensign who captured the French standard at the battle of Waterloo. The place has a strong military theme with sabres, bugles and muskets draped on the walls. Hanging from the rafters are numerous belts of horse brasses and tartan curtains adorn the small windows. There are small brass plaques dotted around the bar displaying amusing sayings and a polite notice requests that drinkers remove themselves from the bar once their drink has been paid for. A few real ales are available at the bar including Landlords and the house wine is very palatable. The second small bar is geared up for food which is served all day and is priced as one would expect for the area. Most main courses run at 3.95 for Scotch pie, mash and beans to 4.95 for curry or cottage pie. Live folk music is playing on most nights and with the open fire and under seat heating the place is a cosy respite from the cold winter weather. Most of the clientele are tourists but the Ensign is also frequented by locals. This is definitely a place to drop in for a drink whilst out and about on the Royal Mile trail.!

Disgraceful
Bars members of our military in Full Dress Uniform, but happily spends its profits that it makes while being defended by these same men and women. Lock on toilets is surreal. You spend over 3 for a pint but have to ask to spend a penny ? However, pub is a good navigational aid to head off to 'The Wash which is a decent pub with nice friendly approachable staff

Great yet a little pungent
This was my fifty second pub of the year. I had a simply wonderful time in the pub. However, the pub did smell of toilets. I would also like to say that I am in love with Nick, Sandra and jenny.

An Embarassment for Edinburgh
The signs all over the place ('no tap water served', 'do not stand here' etc) and a combination lock on the toilets, makes this pub a classic example of the appaulling customer service approach that Scotland is trying desperately to live down. As a born and bred Edinburgh resident, my apologies go out to all our visitors who seek and deserve better options to spend their hard earned money. There's plenty other historical pubs nearby that are a better bet.
