About the Pub
Welcome to the Captains Bar. Traditional and friendly music bar.We do have a book exchange which is free so that people are welcome to take a book and leave a book. There is lots of wonderful real history in the Captains. It is a very historic building and has many literary connections. William McGonagall the poet lived above the bar for 20 years until his death in 1902. McGonagall was a colourful character locally, dressing up to perform his long poetic tragedys and charging a fee for the performance. There is a plaque outside the door.

This tenanted pub is a small traditional stand up bar tucked in behind the Old Quad of Edinburgh University. One of the few city centre pubs that still looks pretty much the same as it started out a century ago, it is clean and well-kept. Almost always busy, The Captain's has a couple of real ales along with a standard selection of whiskies. Food is limited to snacks. The traditional gantry has a few items of real original bar ephemera. The clientele are mainly local working people and a few students drop in, though university academic and administrative staff sometimes do. Amenities o.k.

Views around the bar
Captain's is a lovely old bar with the original wooden gantry running the length of the wall. There is Scottish folk music in the evenings and weekend afternoons.

Loving this pub
What a great friendly bar, love the music and love the atmosphere. A nice mixed crowd, some locals and some tourists. Very welcoming.

Great little bar
This is a fabulous traditional little bar, tastefully done, very neat and friendly and there seems to always be some live music.

Traditonal Old pub
A hidden gem! In the heart of historic Edinburgh and beside The Old College University quadrant. We came across this by accident but the lady behind the bar was very friendly. The pub was recently re-opened and has traditional folk music in the evenings. A young girl came in and played violin on the afternoon that we were there. She seemed to have a few friends sitting with her and it was a wonderful atmosphere if a little quiet.
