About the Pub
This big square pub with another room to the back has a fine central bar. They have one cask ale, a selection of keg beers, a dozen malts and half a dozen wines. Food is heated on the premises and served 12pm - 7pm. Unlike many Edinburgh pubs they don't serve haggis, but will provide Cajun snacks and Italian dishes. The pub is supposedly based around the fictional Highlander Alan Breck, who figures strongly in Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Kidnapped', but there are only a few references. This is a pub that attracts tourists and a lot of passing trade. Like most city centre pubs, it has a lot of party types and pre-clubbers at the weekend and on Friday and Saturday they have DJ's. The back room is comfortable and even has a few shelves of books for quiet contemplation. Amenities fine but downstairs.

St Vincent
A fairly large pub with double frontage halfway along Rose St. Whilst it is not exactly anti-English is doesn't seem too tourist friendly. Local rumours tell of the attempted murder of an English bank manager here some years ago when it was called The Goblet. Perhaps he turned someone down for a loan.

In one corner of the bar you will find a small window seat next to which you can see where a telephone was once located. In the days before mobile phones this was colloquially known as I'll be home late corner.
