The finest place we visited in Sterling. they had Scottish Folk Music night on our Friday visit on August 3rd, 2012. I knew not a soul when I went in but walked out with some great friends The musicians were great. The locals were all welcoming and the brew wonderful. I'd recommend it to all who visit.

An overpriced local pub, it's dead most nights. The manager is always pissed and dresses like a tramp. He sleeps up the stairs and I don't think there is a shower or he washes very often. The toilets are stinking and they don't serve fresh food only microwaved reheats. It's too wee to swing a cat and the the back area ceiling looks like it's made of asbestos. The staff are very rude because they're all underpaid and have to work really long hours. The fruit machine never pays out, its a rigged one from the shows. The condom maching sells faulty condoms that are full of holes. There are mice in the cellar and rats in the bar. They always short change you so check your change. They sell out of date bar snacks which contain animal excrement. The floor is tiled which is sore on your ankles. There is a lot of wood in the place but its fake. The lights are dangerous and the place needs rewired. The seats are not comfortable and old people have pissed on them.

My local and I love it!
This is a great pub with a welcome-one welcome-all aesthetic from bar staff BJ and Lesley (amongst other lovely bar staff) and owner John. Highlights of every week are the folk session on wednesday evening and the pub quiz compered by Europa Ewan on sunday. John also supports local musicians, including Will Bell who performs there frequently and guarantees a fun night - drunken dancing optional, heckling preferred.

I'm a 24 year old student, me and my mates have been frequenting this place pretty much since the new owners took it over. Great choice of single malts, bottled stuff, and cask ales on rotation - at least 2, usually 3.

Big Jobby In Toilet
I just had a disgusting experience in this pub. I went to the cubicle to answer the call of nature and there was a big jobby in the toilet pan. Not only was it rather large in circumference but it was very dark brown which indicates this was deposited by someone with a poor diet. There are a few locals who spring to mind but too many to point the finger. There was also the distinct smell of urine so I guess this is not a very sanitary place. Talking of sanitary I wonder how George Keenan is getting on? I wonder if he was in that night and what he had ate that day? Don't worry I will track the culprit down because I put the jobby in my pocket to have it analysed. Unfortunately though that was also the night I lifted the wrong jacket. What a bummer!

It's all about the confidence ...
Peater has maybe got the Settle mixed up with Whistlebinkies. I was the Settle last week and there was no tip jar. Even if there was - so what! You are under no obligation to put anything in a tip jar. Tip jars are for appreciation of good service and are fairly common. Maybe Peater doesn't get out too much? After all who visits a pub then goes home and posts derogatory comments about a tip jar. Sad git. I suspect though that Peater is associated in some way formerly with
either of these two pubs and rather pathetically chooses to air his bile on here. Good luck to the new owner.

And as we have just took over the refurbishments are on going. We aim to restore Settle to the great wee local pub it should be.
Please feel free to visit us again in the future and give us your opinion then...if your still dissapointed then there will be a free pint in it for you.

Why Settle for anything else?
Best pub in the area with great prices and a friendly welcome. Declan really knows how to run a good shop. There are real ales on here all the time, live music for Homecoming 2009, friendly warm atmosphere. A highly recommended student friendly pub. It's also the oldest alehouse in Stirling and is reputed to be haunted. Wooooo!!!!

Am enjoying the Settle much more since the new people took over in the Spring. Declan and his staff are efficient, friendly and chatty, which is a 100% improvement on the old gang. Think they are suffering by admitting some previously barred bampots - I don't go in if I have to fight my way through drunken morons hanging round the front door smoking.

Bob – Maybe I got over my point a bit wrong here, my comments were directed over the Management over past few years, hence when you look at the post over that period of time the majority of the comments or not great – Do you agree Bob? The current management could well deliver a great pub that we deserve, however, the Settle is my closest pub, and I want to spend the few quid I have left there after paying my bills there, however, some patrons are not the friendliest, and your comments “We know where you live, and get your house in order” does not help the Owners endeavours at all!! However, I was there for an hour last Friday night and had a great time and it was good to see the place with a buzz again – however, it will never live up to its full potential if the have abrasive punters blocking the door and screaming on the internet emotionally. No tenner bob, but I thought you knew me??

Lovely Pub - Shame on a Few Idiots
My wife and I, visited the Settle Inn for the first time on the evening of Sunday 9th August whilst on holiday, and we noted your customer comments on the notice board (with interest) via this website and would advise as follows:

After entering this lovely looking pub, we ordered drinks and were advised that the ice as the machine broke, (on a warm night - you would think they bar staff would visit a local supermarket to get some ice!!); so we took our warm drinks and sat in the rear tunnel, which was lovely but very humid / warm. The males who sat next to us, started a jovial tirade amongst themselves, topics included anti-polish put-downs and sectarianism (sadly this is a Scottish problem), my wife asked these men, quietly and politely to tone down these comments (my wife is a non practising catholic) when she was told to F*$3 off, then they started to laugh! Then the youngest one (late 20’s) broke wind and started to snigger. Our stomach sank.

We did not finish our hot drinks and just left.

Noting the comments below, it does seem this lovely traditional pub is being shamed by some of its patrons. If the owners can knock that on the head and get some ice, this could be a truly great pub, it's got everything else going for it.

Sectarianism, no ice, and my wife being told to F*$3 off! And noting the comments below “We Know Who You Are” and “Arse…” do nothing for this old pub. These actions and terms do not do anything to invite the public to go for a night out or for the occasional drink.

All the best to the new management and staff (you will need it) - Sort the above out and you are on to a winner!

Wrong Ms Brown
The pub has went down hill, after my statement on Wednesday, I returned that evening (the pub was almost empty), returned Friday and then yesterday as I live 2 minute walk away from it, the old place is almost vacant, two males sitting at the bar swearing, being degrotary about 1 female sitting next to her partner(I assume). I REPEAT, ask the management , locals, students, visitors if the Settle is the Best Bar in Scotland (THE ANSWERE WILL BE A RE-SOUNDING NO!!) The answere is in there actions to remove the Sunday Mail Pub of The Year of Award. The management got intimated by it, so removed it! sad and stupid - I might even right to the Sunday Mail to advise of this sorry decline of a once fine bar.

we have visited the settle inn every weekend since the it was taken ov er by new management and have found the atmosphere to be like it used to be before the previous owners had it. the bar staff are excelllent and as it is a family owned pub the owners r doing a good job in trying to bring the pub back to what it used to be. at least now u can go into the pub and relax knowing that the pub is being run the way it should be. we would like to say to them to keep up the good work they are doing and ignore the comments from people that have no idea what they r talking about and have obviously not visited the pub in the last four months.

They tried to make me go to rehab ...
I FIRST POSTED COMMENTS ABOUT THIS PUB A WEEK AGO. AT THAT TIME THEY APPEARED ON THIS SITE BUT HAVE SINCE DISAPPEARED. I CAN ONLY ASSUME THAT THERE WAS A SITE ADMIN ERROR OR THERE IS A CENSORSHIP POLICY IN PLACE. MY COMMENTS ARE ENTIRELY BASED ON FACT. WHAT I SAY CAN BE EASILY CHECKED WITH THE LOCAL POLICE AND RESIDENTS. THERE ARE STORIES OF GANGSTER-LIKE BEHAVIOUR EMINATING FROM THE BOWELS OF THE SETTLE AND I HAVE THEREFORE CHANGED MY NAME TO PROTECT THE INNOCENT (ME).

This used to be a pub full of students, tourists and decent locals. What has changed since those days? A new manager has arrived and the fact that he also runs Stirling's worst pub (Claymore's) is the big clue. His arrival has resulted in all the students disappearing and the pub now being full of the odd tourist but mainly undesirable scumbags. Since taking over, Mr Dufficy's establishment has had many visits from the Police and the frequency of violent incidents has alarmed nearby residents. Such is the scale of the problem that they are now advertising for customers at local mass next door in St Mary's. On production of your holy communion certificate you will get a generous 20% discount and producing your birth certificate (with both parents named) will entitle you to a free pint. What next a loyalty card?

I was in last weekend looking for a wonderful Scottish pub. There was an awful karaoke was on with usual screaming asylum cases. A religious song was sung and noone batted an eyelid. Then a fight broke out. The Mounties arrived and took one guy away. The barman got punched in the mouth and had to go to hospital for treatment. The pub shut early. Not impressed!

How hilarious! Did the owners pay you with a free pint to say all that?? They must be worried! However if they were truly worried then they would hire some staff that don't look like they've got shares in the local prisons. As for the pub not having fights inside, i'v seen the owners kicking off many a time. And if they treat their locals well then why do i know a few who have been barred for simply disagreeing with them over personal matters. and if you assume that i like pubs with fights and drunks inside then surely i would attend the settle inn? it used to be a busy, wee realxed place under the previous owners, yet the miserable bitchiness of the current owners is the reason for the lack of customers in there now. they treat their customers and staff like cr~p. They can get as many people as they want to put good comments up online but its not goin to change the opinions of everyone.

With regard to the comments from 'firefly needs his ass kicked'. At least the original firefly poster could think of a name to call themselves whereas you couldn't be bothered to think of one, just bastardising his. Also he gave the pub five rosettes which is the best so far from an independant reviewer. I suspect you are a member of the settle pubs bar staff and dislike comments which don't brown nose your pub. a shame of a pub
i went to the settle for the first time in 2 years due to being abroad and am so disappointed at how awful a place it has become. a few years ago this was by far the best pub in the area and i made a point of revisiting the place, only to be disappointed and shamed that i'd given them my cash. apparently the place has new owners, who worryingly own the newly reopened whistlebinkys. i think i met the owners in the pub when i was getting served as they were moaning about staff. which is unprofessional to say the least. yet, the miserable girl behind the bar could have been the owner. the person below is right, atmosphere is really bad. not one smile in the place. i'm well sad that this pubs gone to ruin and turned into a classless miserable crap venue

I agree with the previous comment. I walked all the way up to the Settle to find it anything but Pub of the Year. Aye maybe it was P.O.T.Y. in 1733 but not last week it wasn't! The annoying American barmaid (sorry 'pub service technician') has been replaced by an equally annoying Englishman called George. I must remember to take some Prozac with me the next time if I am to get through a bevvy session listening to his boring pish. There are two other female bar staff who have the presence and personality of a couple of funeral directors. Maybe George has trained them?

Well worth a visit, great pub, great atmosphere, great beer what else can I say - it's g-r-e-a-t! Oldest pub in the town and judging by the exterior decor it's the original 1730's paint job outside. Inside is nice and cosy - the kind of place you could take your wife of an evening. The locals seem friendly (unlike some other bars in my reviews). There's an annoying American female barperson serving at times which is where I draw the line. A fine Scottish pub in the shadow of Stirling Castle with a fucking yank serving the beer. You think they would have had sent her to elocution lessons and teach her some rudementary Scottish-ness. 'Hey bawbag whit ye want?' Now that's more like it.
