Absolutley good beer but absolutely a bad pub
Much against my own judgement I went along to this pub. Into our third pints a fight broke out between an obese fat woman and two (maybe three guys). Our beers were sent flying and we left the pub. Sorry, guys and girls, the pub is good but it is situated in a low life area.

Danny 'Bar Staff'
 In response to 'Linda'
It's good to hear about excellent review on the food and service provided, however I find it quite childish and unnecessary to comment on the bar staff, suggesting that I had let the team down by not smiling is a bit of an exaggeration, and seeming as though I know no one of the name Linda who has been a regular over the past few years, you clearly havn't got the courage to use your proper name, please do not hesitate to confront me at your next visit, thank you.

Recently we had a family funeral upstairs. Everyone commented on the fabulous buffet that was provided, both hot and cold, home made hotpot too. Friends of mine who came are looking to book their christening there as the food was so nice. Nothing was too much trouble. I keep trying to come up with excuses to throw a party so we can have another amazing buffet. Then I went back with my friend (vegetarian and fussy) and my sister. The food was top notch, we all said we could have eaten it again as it was so good. The pub looks amazing after its new decorating. Everyone was amazing, service was excellent, so now all my date nights with the other half will start here. Definitely one to go back to over and over, so im planning a evening out, who's in ?

 Loved the food, cheap drinks
Me and my friends have been going to this pub for the past few years, seen it through a few managers... Got to know some of them as we were frequent visitors.
Went into the pub recently to check it out since the re-model and new management.
Have to say the pub looks amazing inside, love how they've decorated the place.
We each tried a different meal from the menu... Give the food top marks and the service was excellent. The woman who served us was more than helpful and friendly, lovely lady.
However sadly there was one member of staff, the young lad who works behind the bar that goes by the name 'Danny' really let the team down,... A smile at least would not have gone a miss. Just didn't seem like he wanted to be there and made us feel unwelcome as soon as we went the bar.
I am sorry to say that because the rest of the staff were lovely and provided good customer service with a smile and were more than helpful.
Back to the positives - the drinks were well priced, the pool room as been done up with the old seating removed now making it easier to play pool.
Even from the outside it speaks volumes to the lenghths they've put into revamping the place. Top marks ***

Talking a lot of crap there mr Newton because the place was packed Alday so cum on let's stop the lies and u had to wait for food because of that many people in ther, so how come u can say nobody was sat near u... And as for the gravy go and watch the chef , I no e would welcome u in the extremely clean kitchen , to show u how he makes it from scratch .. I no it was u in there moaning and personally I think this is ur past time now just to moan literally about anything and nothing,,, get a life and stop complaining ... And it luks like u have got ur cranks of friends to comment as well ... R is that u under a false name tell lied again haha .....

I was in this establishment the said Sunday also, while I'm happy its been taken over and looks a lot better, I'm afraid I must agree with Tony Newton, the food was terrible, not what you would expect really, I don't like to complain either its quite embarrassing. But could the price inflation of £1 on the Easter Sunday be explained please and why do you charge 50p to use a card? Ive never been charged to use a card anywhere else and certainly never in a public house??

 The reply
Being a qualified chef to nvq level and currently teaching at a merseyside catering college I think I know what I'm talking about. I know how gravy is made from scratch and this wasn't. Glad the car park is sorted, it says a lot about the place. To be fair its a nice big pub and for me the food didn't live up to the class of the place, but I understand it was your first weekend of opening. As for the charge of 50p why is that? Is it a service charge? A merchant cost or just simply a GP top-up. The woman who says she heard me moaning was clearly mistaken as we weren't sat near anyone so that must have been someone else. I was the tall bald headed guy with a dark blue shirt on, my wife, long Blonde hair bright green coat on, Scottish accent. Ring any bells?
Nice Pint of mild in here tho. Top marks

Can I say I was at the Bull and Dog on that Sunday that this Tony is complaining about, and our food was exceptional. The meat was so tender and the veg was so fresh thats its been a long time since I have eaten a meal that was home cooked because that was what it was home cooked. The staff were attentive and plesent and very helpful, it,s like he wasnt in the same pub as me and my wife. And if this is all about paying an extra 50p for using your bank card get a life. EXCELLENT ESTABLISHMENT !!!

Just reading this and on that day u (tony Newton ) say u was in the bull and dog, so was I . And if am not mistaken u must of been the man sat next to us and u never stopped complaining ,as for your dinner it was exactly like mine and mine was lovely no complaints WAT SO EVER. So wher u get that it was tiny and meat fatty etc etc. I have to say u have posted a lot of LIES. And if u rememeber right u did eat ur dinner ..And as for saying the management need to get sorted . AM sure u will find that they are very sorted. If u didn't like the price why did u stay to eat???? And the car park as been done now but wat that as got to do with the quality of the food I really don't no because that's what it was QUALITY.. So a suggest before u write on pages like this u should have a re think of what your saying and stop the lies, lies, lies U MADE ME GIGGLE ANYWAY TONY NEWTON... Like the landlord said it sounds like u didn't like the 50p card charge and decided to write all this BULLS**T...........

The Landlord
 Over the top comment.
In response to Tony Newtons comment I would like to say that you are the only person that has complained about our food. Also all our meat and vegetables are fresh from a local butcher and farmer, the gravy is made from the juices from the vegetables and the meat (or just vegetables if vegetarian). I would not like to lower myself to your comment but if the food was that bad then you would of paid for it and would of complained. Also the car park was like that when we took over and I would like to point out that it has now been re surfed. I'm not saying the food it perfect but its a damn sight better that you explained, or is it just the fact that you had to pay an extra 50p to use your card.

 Never ever again
Came across this pub on way home from visiting a friend, it was Easter Sunday, was given a menu that wasn't being served, apparently it was just roasts, after 40 minutes what can only be described as a plate of puke arrived, the plate was tiny, there was thin plastic beef with slithers of fat sat proudly on the top, half a badly peeled spud, and another half that looked like it had had an argument with a blowtorch and lost, all this was swimming in gloopy wallpaper paste type gravy, its the cheap maggi mix stuff they were using. Then a bowl of boiled to death carrots and cabbage was slammed down, absolutely disgusting, me and my wife just looked at each other in disbelief. Fortunately for the staff my wife wouldn't let me complain, so we tried to eat it, but failed, afterwards we noticed that the price on the blackboard was 8.95 where as the menu was 7.95 !!! They put it up a pound just because of Easter, it wasn't a 1.95 plate of food never mind 8.95!!! Theives.
We had enough, decided to pay and leave, I opted to pay by card.... and they charged an extra 50p because of this!!!! I was fuming. Rather than let my temper get the better of me we left. Never ever ever will I set foot in that pub again, oh and you need a 4x4 to navigate through the craterous car park. If the management reads this, you seriously need to sort yourselves out because believe me soon enough you wont have any customers, the good people of clock face have other options! AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID

 Under new management
The Bull & Dog has recently been taken over by a lovely family, who have refurbished the place, and given it a warm welcoming feel.
The pub has a pleasant atmosphere, the beer was nice and chilled, not too expensive and I will go back again; so good that i've booked my daughter's 21st there!

This was our first visit to the astablishment. We arrived just after 7pm, unbeknown that the pub stopped serving food at 6pm on a Sunday.we odrered our drinks & the young lady behind the bar said that she would see if the kitchen was still open. The landlord came & seeted us at the side of the open fire, we were served a first class meal. Nothing was too much trouble. All the staff were very friendly & accommadating.

 Great Food and Drink
This is one of the best pubs around for dining and for the real ale.The Bass is kept is superb condition. The landord always goes out of his way to find us a table and the service has always been good even on the busiest days. Great wholesome home cooked food is what you get and not some duff microwave garbage served up in all the regular establishments. I would reccomend to anyone and also very reasonably priced.

 Terrible! Don't go here!
Went here and waited 50 minutes for burger and chips. When it eventually arrived the middle of the burger was freezing cold. I am suprised they have the ordasity to serve this rubbish. The staff where very unhelpful and diddnt really care that I was unhappy. They took it away and on it's return it was quite obvious that the plate had been chucked into the microwave for a quick blast as the salad was hot on it's return. Don't go here! Don't waste your money!

Went with husband, daughter and son in law today to celebrate our 38th wedding anniversary, sorry we chose Carr Mill. After we ordered we waited 40 mins then had to ask for our starters to be served, sharing plate had items missing but no explanation then waited 45 mins and had to ask for mains, served by a sullen faced girl and 1 of the men had ordered the larger meal which was exactly the same size as the others??? Then I find that I have waited over an hour for cold chips, lukewarm fish and tasteless mushy peas. I have just come home for some food as theirs was inedible, needless to say I won't be back and wish I had kept my £50 in my pocket.

A Jewel in the Foodie Crown.
I have eaten at the Stanley Arms many times over the years and have always found the quality, and standards of the food, unsurpassed.
The staff are always happy to help, nothing is too much trouble, and the service is excellent. The menu is amazing and offers good, well presented, English-Fare from across the U.K. All the food is freshly cooked to order, and sourced, where possible, from local outlets. This place is truly an oasis in the desert of ding-foodoutlets, and provides excellent food, a fantastic range of meals to suit every palate, and massive portions that would defeat Desperate Dan. I cant work out how anybody could fault this place, after all, it's always busy and you are lucky to get a table on a Sunday. Maybe the last critic caught it on a bad day?
Oh yes, just for the record, I dont work there. I'm only a customer !!

We went as a family to celebrate a 70th birthday (16 of us) Food was excellent and we didn't wait long at all, service was fantastic and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. The menu was a new menu and the choice was superb. Prices were very very reasonable, both for food and drinks.

i am totallly discrased with the customer service that i was given when i went down to the bull and dog. the boy that was working goes by the name Aidan didnt show any help what so ever we was left started at our table waiting to be served for exactly 36 minutes.
i would not recomend this pub as the lamb chop that i recieved looked as though it was still running around the farm alive, and also the chips where raw and also out of date.

 Overcooked Food / Appaling Service
The management were rude, unhelpful and I can not write a bad enough review of this establishment. To celebrate a family event, fathers 86th birthday, we booked for a large (9) famly group. The table was crowded and meant for 6, but they squeezed 9 in. After ordering from the menu - we had to visit the bar to get drinks ourselves, comment from the staff we are too busy to serve you. The food arrived in dribs and drabs, first some starters then some main courses for people who hadnt yet had starters !. When I tried to attract someones attention, the reaction was always the same, I will look into it When I found someone who seemed to be in charge and asked if we could all have our meals at the same time, I was told very rudely cut the sarcasm. If I had been alone and not with elderly family I would have made a very large scene from this response. When after much annoyance, extremely overcooked food and generally some of the worst service I have ever had, we asked ot pay the bill we were told only cash or cheque can be accepted. It was not possible to pay with a Card. To assist they restaurant has a service charging ATM in the lobby, which is just another example of how appaling the concept of customer service is. Even my elderly father, who is generally tolerant of service, the next day remarked that he wouldnt go back again. A throughly appaling place, how they can ever hope grow business and attract clientele is beyond me. If anyone from the Stanley Arms would like to comment please do !

 Meal on Saturday 17th April
I was part of a party of 4 who ate there on Saturday April 17th and had a very disappointing experience. Our meals were of very poor standard at best and inedible at worst. We asked to speak to the manager. After waiting 30 minutes we decided to cut our losses and move on to another local pub. This doesn't demonstrate good customer service and I wouldn't be writing this if we had been able to sort out the matter on the night.

 Excellent food, good atmosphere
I'm new to st helens and have found the wheatsheaf welcoming, with its laid back atmosphere. Its worth a visit just for the floors which are all at an angle, either that or the measures are bigger than most pubs. ;-) The food is of a very high standard and I have been back their with my family when they came to visit. As far as pubs go I'd give it 5* for food.

I too will never visit this pub again. My family and I visited and ordered food. I had half roast chicken. The food arrived cold. I asked for it to warmed up. It was taken away and arrived back on a different smaller plate and had been cut up i.e. the chicken was now without a leg. It loked as if it had been hacked at. The staff were very unfriendly and unhelpful. No opology was give and II decided not to eat the meal. About 5 other groups complained within the hour and a half that I was there. So if you like your food messed with this one is for you.

 ruining a good pub
the black horse at moss bank was a beautiful country pub with brass and good food, a huge beer garden and bowling club which could be viewed by sitting in the beer garden with a pint. The current landlord is totally going against what we loved about it. The bowlers are to be no more as the landlord apparently has other plans for the land. It is such a shame and I am saddened.
