what a shame the old pub as now gone , but if you don't use it , you loose it. the last landlord & landlady tried really hard to keep the old place going. BUTat the end of the day it's down to you out there to keep your local open. top marks for trying, you have been missed!!

I recently held a surprise party here. The buffet provided was absolutely appalling. The room was supposed to be decorated but the 'decorations' consisted of one happy birthday sticker on the wall. No tablecloths, no serviettes. The food was extremely poor and the manager was drunk. Do not book here

A Complaint I Wrote To The 8 Bells
I would like to complain about 2 members of staff at the 8 Bells in Cannon Street, Dover, Kent. My partner, Luke Westfield, and I visited this establishment with 4 friends on the 12th January 2006 between 11 – 11.30 PM. Luke and I went to the bar and were rudely told, “not to make a mess like he did a couple of nights ago” by whom we believe to be the supervisor. He then went on to say that if he caught Luke doing it again he would kick him out himself, and we found him threatening. Not only was my partner and I not there at the date the staff member said, Luke, our friends and myself are very respectful when we visit restaurants and pubs. When questioned about the mess, the male staff member simply said “Up on the second level”. We have only sat up there twice and both times we were all well behaved. Luke then pointed out that we had not even been there in a couple of months. The male staff member basically shrugged it off and walked away. A female member of bar staff then started shouting at Luke, accusing him of calling the male staff member, and I quote her, a “four eyed twat”. Neither Luke nor I had spoken a word since the man had walked off, and therefore definitely did not call him that. The female staff member then said they would not serve him. Luke immediately left the establishment without arguing back or making a scene and went to meet other friends at a different pub while I stayed behind with the friends we had arrived at the 8 Bells with. None of the staff informed any of us that Luke had been barred.

A second incident occurred on the 19th January 2006 between 10 and 11 PM, involving the same male supervisor. Luke and I arrived at the 8 Bells with 2 friends. This time my friend and I went up to the bar while Luke went to use the restroom. As Luke walked past to get to the restrooms, my friend and I overheard the male staff member speak to a different female staff member saying, “Watch him, he’s barred.” We did not question him about it as we didn’t want a repeat of the 12th January incident and to get barred ourselves. We left soon after as we felt uncomfortable, as we were being constantly watched and being given dirty looks by the male staff member in question.

We regard this as slanderous as it could affect other pubs and restaurants we choose to visit. Luke, our friends and I all find it extremely embarrassing and upsetting, more so for Luke, as he was shouted at in front of a bar and pub full of people and barred, both for no good reason, he has also never been barred from any pub before. My friends and I also feel as though we are being punished as we can’t enjoy a drink without the male staff member keep giving Luke and ourselves dirty looks and we can no longer enjoy a drink there with Luke due to him being barred. We also believe it to be a case of mistaken identity, and believe we should both be given an apology for the distress the male staff member has caused us, and Luke should be given full access to the 8 Bells again as we were clearly not at fault. We have heard a great amount of people complaining about the male staff member in question, and so it’s not just us. The staff member in question is a vindictive, temperamental man and knows nothing of customer service. This is not just my opinion, but also that of many, many others. He is not doing anything to uphold Wetherspoon’s reputation.

Sincerely,
Aimee Redden

 Home of Channel Swimmers !
Every summer this pub is brimming with swimmers either waiting to swim the channel or swapping tales of woe or success . A unique noticeboard has developed on the walls with comments depicting the struggles swimmers went through , year and times . Swimmers no longer wait for their certificate , sometimes they get straight off the boat and head to the White Horse to celebrate with good company and great service !!!!

 A superb pub!
Perfect for a traditional pint and chat with the locals!
99.99% of the people here are very friendly and many families come here for their regular outing.
The pub's landlord does his best to serve the customers and create a warm atmosphere, where everyone is welcome.
It's no wonder why there are many customers that pay a daily visit here, (not because they're alcoholics) but because they're part of local community in Dover, who all enjoy the benefits of drinking in the Red Lion.
A touch of humour with help from the landlord gives the Red Lion that extra edge, where customers can share a laugh with each other.
