It could have been such a nice experience if some female staff didnt give us an attitude on several occasions during ONE evening(16/04/2013). Also £14 for three drinks sounds a bit overpriced. | ||

When visiting family in Edinburgh this is always my first (& last) stop. the staff are helpful & friendly, the eclectic mix of 'stuff' is very amusing & the food is wholesome & hearty. | On monday afternoon of this week I dined at the Edinburgh Slug and Lettuce. I was served by Kofi. During the time I was there he was on his own - greeting, taking orders, serving the orders and then clearing the tables. He never stopped and yet had time for all your customers. I feel that you should know what an asset you have. Perhaps also he could have done with a little more help! I'm sure that customers are ready to complain but I wish to praise. | They advertise a breakfast, so I went in yesterday at 11.15am and ordered one. The woman at the bar told me, Oh, we've run out of eggs.Therefore no breakfast! Even though there's a big supermarket straight across the road, and several other grocers within minutes walk. This is quite funny in some ways, but actually it shows an appalling approach to service. Better go elsewhere. | ||

| This is the first time i have been in this pub, even though I live locally (having heard bad reviews about it being a 'regulars only' pub). The decor, i adore. It is a very quaint and warm pub and the young man who served us was absolutely lovely. I only have one complaint and that the ill-fitting music which confuses the atmosphere. Maybe more subtle piano or acoustic music is more fitting than power ballads would be suitable. However, lovely experience, do not avoid due to the bad reviews until you try for yourself :) | ||

My Uncle Ian who was homesexual loved this place and used to get me and my sister to do his make up before he went to the noble on a saturday night. | Yeah, taxi's are insane. I don't know why they crahge so much money to drive such short distances. When I was in South America a couple years ago, taxi's were so unbelievably cheap even when gas down there was equivalent to $6.00/gallon in US dollars. I don't know why they simply don't go to all of the nearby restaurants and convert the buses to run on filtered cooking grease like they do the grease cars. The buses could run for nearly for free if they would do this. Diesel taxi-cabs could do the same and save everyone money. | ||

| On a one day visit to Edinburgh (not nearly enough by the way) we were lucky enough to find the Deacon Brodie Pub. had lunch and a few beers. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Let me taste the various beers so I order one I knew I would enjoy. Ian was fantastic, and talked us into trying Haggis, which was delicious! Can't say enough about how welcoming the people were. It would be my everyday pub if I wasn't in the US instead of Edinburgh! | ||

| Hubby and I visited a few weeks ago for lunch, we had previously been quite a few years ago and had been disappointed with every aspect of our visit then. How different now! We both had the Cullen Skink soup - best we have ever tasted. Our meal was a bit slow in arriving (they were very busy though) but it was well worth waiting for. Staff very friendly and helpful. We will certainly be back. | ||

| I'd heard the Phoenix had improved a lot lately. The last time I was in, five years ago, there was a guy snorting lighter fuel from a canister down his sleeve, but no-one seemed to mind as he was a regular. I suppose the Cask Marque expired sign on the front should have been a warning. We went in on a quiet Tuesday night and the barman managed to mishear A pint of gold, please and Oh and another as a request for a pint of Edinburgh Gold and an IPA. Given the taste of the gold, maybe we should have taken the IPA (although it was a *very* short measure), but the IPA was swapped for a second gold with very ill grace. When we sat down, we tookone sip and decided the beer was undrinkably vinegary. The barman - surlier than ever - claimed the beer was just on (unlikely on a quiet Tuesday) tasted it and said it was fine. To confirm, he handed the beer to the other barman who failed to hide the facial pucker as he also claimed the beer was fine. We left the beer on the table and left the pub. Maybe I'll try it again in another five years. | ||

| Ridiculously over-priced. Baked potato with cheese - or rather cheese glued to the plate and none on the actual potato. The salad looked a week old, my guess is the cheap tesco brand? Chicken burger - looked like 2 defrosted chicken breasts with a piece of raw bacon on-top. Sickening. My advice - sack the chef and buy some fresh food! | ||

| Great pub, great beer, good atmosphere great staff... apart from the girl with dreadlocks. I honestly have never been so fecked off with a member of bar staff as i have with this girl. I have ALWAYS been nothing but polite to her, as have my friends and yet every time i go in there she is unbelievably rude and confrontational. Since when has shouting Yes? at someone when they're looking at the beer board been an ok way of getting their attention and asking what they'd like? I can accept people having a bad day but she is permanently in a furious mood. I'm not the only person to complain of this, I've heard loads of people remark about her after coming back from the bar. I don't bother going in there now as the thought of having to order a beer off her totally puts me off. It's just massive hassle when all i want to do is have a beer in the only pub in the area worth visiting. Get rid of her and you have a 5 star pub, probably the best in Edinburgh. Shame. | ||

| So glad we took a taxi out of town, this is one of the most memorable pubs we've ever been to. Loved the decor and the old fashioned service, and found the staff extremely welcoming and informative about the pub's past - definitely not rude. This was the first time we've ever been so we're certainly not regulars - we live in Yorkshire! and were visiting Edinburgh for the weekend. Would love to return next time we're there, and hope this unique place never changes. | ||

He had an extensive knowledge of the wines available and the information was worded in an excellent manner. | I visited the Filling Station with my husband and 10 year old son on Tuesday 27th December 2011. The girl on the desk was very nice and we were seated after a short wait. However all downhill from there. Place was busy but plainly hugely understaffed. We were on the upper floor but I only saw one waitress for what is quite a big restaurant. There was another young male waiter but I only saw him wander vagely back and forth a couple of times and did not appear to be taking orders or serving. We were offered the lunch menu which goes up till 5pm and appeared to be very good value. I think 2 courses were £7.95. It took a wee while for our orders to be taken and then five minutes later the waitress cames back and said that she had't written our drinks down and what were they? It took another 10 minutes for them to arrive. My husband and I both ordered potato skins and fish and chips. My son ordered a pizza. The potato skins when they arrived were poor quality and barely lukewarm. However, it took another 45 minutes for our mains to arrive. At this point we had been in the restaurant for over an hour and my son had not yet had anything to eat! The waitress dumped the plates and walked away. My husband took one look at his and declared he wan not eating it! the fish was clearly overcooked to being almost burnt. I tasted mine and the chips were almost cold and were obviously not freshly cooked. The fish was dried out and tasteless and resembled those cheap fillets you can buy in Iceland. My son liked his pizza. We complained to the girl on the desk, paid for our drinks and pizza and left. DO NOT GO HERE. IT IS AWFUL. | ||

Big Baz the barman (the Bazmanian Devil to regulars) put down his cheeseburger and asked the girls and bloke to show ID since they were all very skimpily dressed. They refused and called him a douchebag (dunno what that is). Baz escorted them out and one of the girls kicked over a sign outside and shouted take a hike, tubby! to Baz. Cloisters is a lovely family pub that does not need that rowdy behavior. Baz Whopper With Cheese XL the Barman is quick to defuse any situation though. | ||

The kids played in the room whilst we had our starters which was lovely. Then the pizzas came. My friend returned hers then two of us couldn't eat their neither could the kids. Then I noticed the fruit shoots were 2 months out of date! My friend asked for the mananger. She said there would be no bill twice to us. The kids then had some ice cream then she gave us a bill for the startes and kids meals! We had only got out the door when my friends boy was projectile vomitting. Two feet from the bar, got the sorry we only serve regulars patter. I questioned this politely and reasoned that I only wanted a quick pint, I got a tirade of extremely rude abuse which I feel was an attempt to make me back off and feel inadequate. Wrong!!!! I let the staff member finish the whinge and then let go with both barrels ( no swearing) that 1) I didn't know who they thought they were, but rest assured they or noone else in there was any better than me. 2) They could keep their pub and their pretend upper class tosh. | I used to really like the Canny Man's. It's an interesting and unique place, the beer was decent and the food OK. It was pretty civilised. Mr Kerr even seemed to take a shine to me and my wife on our first visit many years ago. But after living locally and visiting more regularly, I just saw too much rudeness, officiousness and downright snobbery. I saw four men thrown out after Mr Kerr misunderstood them trying to help a woman with a pushchair in the beer garden one afternoon, and refusing to back down once he realised he'd got it wrong. I've seen perfectly respectable people who were behaving impeccably asked to leave for no reason that anyone could fathom. I've seen the owners strive to look as far down their nose as they can at too many perfectly good customers. And far, far too often, I saw ordinary, well-dressed, well-mannered people told at the door, Sorry, the public house is for regulars only. Two words: Fawlty and Towers. Although generally pretty well run, the owners and staff display the same attitude to their customers as Basil does to his guests. If you don't fit their narrow 1950s petit-bourgeois idea of respectability, they may throw you out. Or they may just suffer you to stay - as long as they get to show their utter disdain for you and the grubby little world you represent. People - presumably those who are in the in group - seem to regard this as quirky, charming, or delightfully old-fashioned. It's not. It isn't about excluding a rowdy or rough element either. It's just nasty, undiluted class aggression. Which is ironic, since the owners and many of the staff have no class whatsoever. | ||

| Having visited Kays for many years with and without a dog; I was recently asked to leave because my dog made a noise!!!! Said dog was being petted by STAFF and other patrons and being young is apt to yap and play when petted - to be asked by staff to leave because he made a noise after staff had been causing him to be playful rather begs belief... (it was an un-recognised barman, who seemed none too keen on having gay men in the pub.....) My house overlooks Kays and I've always been tolerant of the odd noisey episode, but in future I will note and report every episode of antisocial behaviour to the relevant authorities. Within seconds of ordering 3 drinks , my friends and I were asked to leave as there was a private party in progress, unter mince!! We obviously just didn't fit in with the motley crew that were already tucked into their seats. It felt like we had stepped back in time ! | I was reminded of the old joke what do you find under a ponytail? Answer: A horse's ass. on a visit to Sandy Bell's yesterday. I've been in and out of this bar for nearly 40 years, but after yesterday, I won't be back. I ordered a pint of IPA and a wine, £5.50 handed over a £20 note and got £4.50 change. I immediately queried this and was treated like I was an idiot. I was accused of only handing over a £10 note, 'cos there's only one in the till an it wasn't there 5 minutes ago. The guy sitting next to me had just paid for his drink with a £10 note he later told me and the barmaid. Then I had to wait 10 minutes whist the barman checked the tills. After all that I was grudgingly handed 2 £5 notes with a mumbled, that's never happened before. All I can say is Nice Try Mate but pick on some less awake next time. | Me and my girlfriend walked in last night to the Filling station on he royal mile wed 10th aug, we had to wait 15minutes for a table so had adrink in the bar, which was ok. We then got our table and decided to order the Full rack of ribs, when they arrived was 9 cut up small ribs in small bowl with half cooked small bowl of chips and 3 small tubs of sauce. I was disgusted with the 9 small ribs in the bowl that i asked to speak to the Manager on duty. I was told him that i was disgusted with the portion for £16 for the meal that was in front of me, which he agreed was terrible and said would discount the meal to half price and was having discussions withe the managers regarding the ribs. The meal was ruined with the whole ambience, we ate few of the ribs and asked for the bill and walked out. I would not recommend the Filling station for food ruined our night. | ||

| arrived at the filling station at around 2pm today. as it was busy i asked how long we would have to wait on atable for 2. was told that there was a 5-10 min wait so myself and my son decided to wait. After we waited for 20mins my son went and asked how long we were still going to wait and was told that the buzzer to let us know when our table was ready had not been registered so we were actually never going to get a table. We were then given the next available table. We ordered our dirinks,a diet coke for myself and an irn-bru ice cream float for my son, after a wait the drinks arrived my diet coke and an irn bru for my son,this was returned as it is not what he ordered. We then ordered our food. an all day breakfast for him and a hot dog for myself. they arrived in ok time as the resteraunt was busy but the allday breakfast was missing the link sausage, we told this to our waitress who came back with a sausage on a seperate plate and left. after a short time the waitress came and asked if everything was ok, it wasnt the breakfast should have also had potate scones with it that were also missing, she then informed us that they had run out and only had hash browns and askd if he would like one, this is half way through our meal. Surley this should have been mentioned at time of ordering as he would have ordered something different. I would like to say that i have been the this place before and received good service but after today i would only return if i really had to and as there are plenty of great places to eat in edinburgh that dont cost as much it is highly unlikley that i will go back. still waiting on an apology | ||

| My partner and I popped into the filling station for lunch as the menu looked quite nice and the price was a bit over average so we figured it must be quality food. We sat down at our table and our waitress introduced herself and continued to take our drink order, she then went on to ask if we would like to start with garlic bread with cheese to which I replied no thank you, she then proceeded to ask again if I was sure she couldn't temp me to order, this annoyed me slightly as I'd don't want to have to come into a restaurant and be We wanted some comfort food so ordered chilli nachos and macaroni cheese with Chips and battered mushroom to share. The macaroni dish was described on the menu as being creamy macaroni with cheese onto, out into the over till bubbling and when it arrived it looked very plain with hardly any 'creamy sauce' no cheese on top and there were actual pieces of pasta with no sauce on at all. The sauce that was there tasted like powered cheese and it was horrible. The chilli nachos had about 2 tablespoons of chilli if you were lucky and this was basically all kindness beans and tasteless. There was big raw chunks of green chilli not jalapeños and there was only cheese covering 2 of the nachos! The battered mushroom although nice were too greasy and when I took a bite the grease was everywhere! We couldn't every eat the dishes and pushed the plates to the side, not once did the waitress come over and ask if everything was okay and when I asked for the bill she was silent and did not let on or ask how our meal was! I do not understand how this place can charge these prices and serve such poor quality food. I have made sure my review is on every single site as people do not have money to waste and there are so many nice places in Edinburgh that serve decent quality food for reasonable prices! I will never be back! I also want to say that, this location will pull alot of tourists and the filling station should be ashamed of producing such poor quality! This is a an insult to Edinburgh! | ||

| I visited this bar a while back and was disgusted that my Jack Daniels & cole was only half full, when i asked if I could have a full glass which Im sure I paid for, I was asked for an extra pound. i visited again on the weekend forgetting my first experience & was dissapointed the problem still existed. the bar is great unfortunately the staff are somewhat judgmental or their customers & seem to take a liking to only those who have common interests or similar to themselves in their quirky personalaties....I would sugest to take a look at the bar then leave | ||

| Went there for a quiet cappuccino and a bowl of chips today. I was told that they were only serving food upstairs. My goal to have a comfortable bite to eat was dashed when I entered the packed, and very loud (and very bright) eating area up top. Can I help you? the waitress said, with a notable tone of confusion and a little bit of annoyance. As if someone standing by the 'please wait here to be seated' sign was the most uncommon and unnatural thing to happen in that part of the pub. I spoke plain, clear-as-day, proper, well-spoken English to the old waitress. She didn't understand a word (not the first time I have had this problem with this woman), which just made ME look like an idiot. I left, returning to the ground floor. When I got back to the bar I just ordered a cappuccino and retired to a dark corner to read, starving. ONLY serving food upstairs is a bad idea. But the fact that the barman had an attitude about fetching me more sugar for my coffee kinda soured the experience further. It took him 15 seconds, but he acted like I was sending him out to a minefield. The staff in this place need to get their act sorted out. It would be such a lovely place if they all raised their IQs a little or just stopped being snobs. Oh...and fire that old waitress!!! | ||

| I visited this pub on a hen weekend to Edinburgh and I have never experienced service like it! The pub was empty and the bar man made no effort to hid his hangover joking with us not to make too much noise as his head was burstin. When ordering our drinks the bar man was reluctant to go down to the store room for the angus dourie bitter required for some long vodkas and asked if we could changed our order!! We then ordered food all on the 1 order and everything arrived over 30mins later and at different times either burnt or under cooked, some did not arrive at all! When we asked for the manager the scruffy hangover bar man arrived and was rude and at no point offered an apology. He said they where understaffed even though we where the only 12 people in the bar! He then went into hiding leaving a young girl to deal with our complaint and refused at first to offer refunds for the food that was burnt! The girl eventually gave us the refund while the manger remained in hiding! A simple apology would have sorted this issue but instead I will never be entering any of the Edward chains and I strongly recommend you stay clear of the Edinburgh branch! | ||

I then asked if she had red wine and she said yes I asked whether they were small bottles or big ones and found out that they had large ones only so being a very frequent wine drinker i asked if they had been opened long as wine tends to go off if it is left open for a day or so, She said 'WINE DOES NOT GO OFF AND HOW WOULD I KNOW HOW OLD THEY ARE SINCE I JUST GOT HERE AN HOUR AGO!' I said well can I try one - She said NO! WE DONT DO SAMPLES' I asked if I bought some wine and it had turned could i get it changed and she said NO! So I just said ok I will take a glass of Rioja thanks. SHE THEN PROCEEDED TO SNAP THE GLASS OF BEER OFF MY HUSBAND AND TELL US THAT WE HAD A PROBLEM AND THAT WE NEEDED TO LEAVE! I COULDNT BELIEVE IT. SHE CAME AROUND THE BAR AND STARTED TO PUSH MY HUSBAND OUT OF THE PUB - PHYSICALLY - HE WAS NOT HAPPY THAT SHE WAS TOUCHING HIM SO HE SAID SO - SHE PUSHED US TOWARDS THE DOOR AND TOLD US TO GET OUT. We asked to speak to the manager and she said she was the manager(not sure if I believe that) She would not tell us her name either!! I have never been so disprepected in my life. We had come to Edinburgh for the Rugby International between Scotland and Ireland and had been having a great time exploring Edinburgh. | Food Good as Pub Grub goes BUT oh dear what a miserable wine selection. Of those listed only the cheapest 2 were available and having choosen 1 it was rank! Having complained, no-one appeared to answer our complaint but we were charged for the privilage! Our mistake was to have poured 3 Glasses because we stupidly thought this place wouldn't sell el cheopo vino at vastly marked up prices!! The only saving grace was that my mother had a bottle of M&S wine in the car (£8.00) which our poor waitress agreed that we could drink. It is amazing that a pub that promotes itself in the way that it does didn't have the advertised wine in stock and of what was available couldn't supply a fresh bottle. The waitress on duty was completely harassed and was coping under difficult circumstances but service was so slow that we abandoned any thoughts of coffees and follow-up drinks. This pub is clearly trading on its name and doesn't care a hoot because they know people will keep on coming due to its location and history! | ||

Also situated in one of the best streets in Edinburgh, the cowgate, a hidden gem in the old town. Take a late night romantic stroll after and enloy the outstanding architecture of the street after you've had one of the finest dining experiences Edinburgh can offer, the chef uses the freshest of Scottish ingredients, this really should have a michelin star. It even offers some rooms for a weekend away, you would think you where in the finest hotels in Paris or London. Cant recommend this place enough, incredibly good value for money, i dont know how they do it, it must be the pride the staff have in working there | ||

| I find the predominance of 5-star and 1/0-star ratings interesting, although perhaps they represent those willing to spend the time making comments. As a single female from abroad, I had a lovely experience. I enjoyed the eclectic atmosphere and the ability to choose among many different venues, finding a quiet corner and a tasty meal (if rather expensive for an open-faced sandwich and salad) that exactly suited my mood. The manager and waitstaff/bartenders were helpful and friendly without constantly checking on my state of mind. I would visit again on another trip to Edinburgh and recommend it heartily to friends and family. | ||

| I have now been into the Cramond Brig many many times as i live locally. I can confidently say that the management team are 10000000% better than before. Having spoken to both Ewan and Tasha everytime we have visited, I can clearly see that they are passionate about turning this business around. The warm welcome they both extend to all their customers at all times, is second to none. I always feel like a returning friend as opposed to a paying customer, which in my opinion is the best, if not the only, way to be. They have obviously hand picked the existing team members as it is plain for all to see that not only do they work well together to provide superior service, they seem to all be genuinely close, which in turn creates the family atmosphere that my family and I continue to return to the Brig for. I cannot praise the two of them enough and I truly hope that the new owners realise how much the local community appreciate how they have rebuilt the restaurants reputation and regained our trust. | I’m holidaying in the UK from Australia and was refused service by the unfriendly Manager because my 34 year old Asian friend was not carrying any identification. We have visited pubs all over the UK and this is the only place that has been a problem. I wonder why. My complaint was brushed aside. They refused to tell me the last time they’d asked a 34 year old Caucasian for his identification. The company said “Under the current laws the person responsible for running any bar is permitted to refuse service for any number of reasons ... a reason does not have to be given.” Left a very sour taste in our mouths and spoiled our visit to Edinburgh. | ||

| Love coming here often for a bite to eat. Surprisingly large inside, it has been recently been taken over by new management who have much improved the site. Good atmosphere- busy, but not so much so that its uncomfortable or too loud. Staff are very friendly and attentive. The menu offers a range of inventive gourmet burgers (i love the chilli burger- which comes with jalapenos, chili cheese, sour cream and a rich spicy sauce), as well as salads and sides. The burgers are generous in size and presented nicely, on wooden boards with a pot of coleslaw and string fries. Deserts are lovely too- try the toffee sundae...if you any room left!! Fantastic range of drinks, including many beer choices and cocktails for under a fiver. Wine is jokely listed under cheap, good and great - meaning there is various price ranges. The beer and burger deal for under a tenner should not be missed!h Would definitely recommend a visit :)h | ||

Ultimately a bar is a service industry. Although the resaurant is providing great food and great beer, the staff can ultimately take away from the experience and scare customers away. | ||

| There were all sorts of curios and pictures hanging off the walls and ceilings. The food was very nice but the main course was a choice of about 100 Scandinavian-style open sandwiches; so if you want meat and three veg then you’d be deeply disappointed. You could have a side-salad of a baked potato! The desserts were different presentations of ice-creams. So all the cooking is done hours before you arrive -it's just a matter of constructing it on a plate. I chose surf and turf which was a few thin slices of fillet, a king prawn and a bit of a langoustine on a slice of dark bread. Smart casual dress, no cameras, no credit cards but helpfully they have installed a cash machine and charge you £2 for the privilege of getting money out to pay them – even though there is a cashpoint directly across the road. You can only go in one door and out of another. You write down your order on a chit – put the reference number rather than a waiter taking it. Generally, you get the feeling that you are there on their terms you are meant to be grateful. There are plenty of other places I'd rather spend my time and money. | ||

| I know this place from the 1970s. It has been in the Watson-Kerr family for nearly 80 years. It is quaint, full of it's unique character, is part of Edinburgh's history and although it may not attract the youth looking for rock and pop, it has a regular clientele that are mature, safe and private. It grows on you and it's unique way of your writing your own order for food and drink in the restaurant is itself something to savour. The menu in the winter could do with a few more hot dishes but otherwise is excellent. The list of malt whiskies is also unique and extensive. It is family run, antiquarian in character and keeps to strict rules. If you do not like order and good behaviour while in pubs maybe you should stay away but otherwise feel absolutely safe to enter the place and come back again and again | ||

| On an extended Volcanic Ash trip my son and I left London to visit family in Edinburgh. After seeing some fantastic pubs in London and Canterbury I have to say that Canny Mans rates at the top. Our cousin, who is a regular at the place recommended some of his favorite foods, all of them were well presented and delicious. The service was great! Outstanding, classy and classic all apply to this gem. Anyone would be lucky to have this pub in their town! | ||

| Colin are you mad? The Tap was one of THE best places in Stockbridge to go for a nice lunch/dinner. Maybe the food being served before was spoiling us a bit too much, but I know I will never eat there again. The food I was served a week ago was god awful in comparison to what it was before. Unseasoned, ugly, bland and most importantly BORING. Still a lovely place to drink, and the staff as always are fantastic, but if you're wanting something nice for your tea, head to Bells or the Blue Parrot! | ||

| The beer is served perfectly and has the best selection of spirits in the city. As to the other comments the staff are excelent especially the take no nonsense bar maid. If you want to have ice in a malt whisky go to a diferent bar and keep your opinion to yourself. The barmaid in question in my opinion is the best thing about the place and with out her it has never quite been the same. | ||

| We were visiting Edinburgh for the long Easter weekend. This was near to our B&B. Not a bad choice of beers some cask ones (A new thing according to the very welcoming locals) The choice on the juke box was huge and the locals have great and varied taste in music. Get in early if you want to hear your choices! As the last couple of reviewers said the bald manager is a bit of a sourpuss. Somebody should give him a second facial expression for his birthday. Difficult to tell if he is actually that pissed off as you can't understand a word. In conclusion good pub terrific and very friendly locals What a pity the skin head manager brings the whole atmos down with his scowling. (Lost 2 stars for that) | ||

| I Have frequented this bar on and off for yrs after coming over the short distance from Dalkeith now residing in Edinburgh i have normally always called in as i have found it to be a pleasant bar with pleasant clientele and bar staff However one barman with long greasy hair and with an irish accent certainly has changed my point of view and the view of my friends from Edinburgh as this man or boy should be aptly named has certainly not got a way with him in manners in regards serving fellow customers yes it gets busy at nights especially at wkends but this barman has been seen to be agressive in his manner towards people and has not got a way about him towards customers and actually i think he has something against Scottish people in general and should not be allowed to work behind any bar as he is very abrupt and agressive in his manner..certainly he has a twisted personality I and all my friends wont go back to this bar only because of what we have witnessed with this man behind the bar The others all were and have always been no problems and get on with their jobs and ok at it but this bloke as mentioned from Ireland has no way about him for working at this type of work whatsoever And the manager of this bar really if he doesnt want anymore customers to dissapear from venturing into his bar then he'd be wise to get rid of this very abrupt bloke before others follow out the door Ive personally told my friends both male/female whom frequent this bar as i did and they also are not going back until this guy has been sent packing. | ||

Have always been with Evonne Winters coach party, and now it is so friendly, so when I was in Edinburgh looking for a meal after visiting the afternoon performance at the Playhouse, I looked no further than the Crammond Brig. Prompt, friendly service. Ok, we were in and out within the hour and we only had a main course, but what a main course, any chance I can get the recipie please chef for the butternut squash? | I have been going to the Barony Bar for over 20 years and have always been fond of it's relaxed atmosphere and excellent beers. Unfortunately on my last visit I encountered arguably the worst service I have ever experienced in a pub. The rude, unsmiling barmaid appeared to consider such basic activities as saying please and thank-you and clearing away glasses as beneath her station. Upon leaving my friend returned our glasses to the bar and said thank you only to be greeted with stony silence. A busy weekend you might think for the harassed barmaid. Not at all, a quiet monday evening with about half a dozen punters. It will be a long time before any of us are back. | ||

Service is extremely polite and professional (even a white tablecloth and white cloth serviettes). But staff are a little 'distant' and could be more welcoming. I asked about buying a bottle of The Golden Drop (the pub's own blend). Despite there being dozens of bottles behind the bar and others having bought previously, they wouldn't sell me one - strange, given that it is a business and I had cash in hand. | ||

| I visited dropkicks last week for the first time, and i will never ever be back. How this can be one of the best bars in Edinburgh is beyond me, the place was disgusting! I was met in the door by two rude security guards, then was hit by the overpowering smell of hundreds of sweaty drunks - not the most appealing thing in the world let me assure you. After ten minutes of trying to work my way through a huge scrum of shouting, jumping and in one case - fighting customers, I only just saw the bar and was met by the sight of two stressed barstaff, giving horrific service, some of the worst pints ive ever seen! So i left, and will never go back! People listen! There are much better places to go than this dive! | ||

| I went there last night with a mate, played a fruit machine situated at door beside bar and went to toilet after losing 25 odd quid (big deal it happens) and after coming back my mate informed me a uniformed staff member named Cameron rushed up to it from behind the bar as soon as i had walked away proceeded to play it in between working and serving customers. i took exception to this considering it's a bit off colour to see a staff member blatantly scam the machines/customers like that as soon as a customers back is turned and asked him if he was working which he denied though it was obvious he was and was wearing uniform, going back and forth behind bar serving food etc, i just saw this as scamming behaviour and stated it so to him which he arrogantly chuckled at and 5 mins later when i tried to buy another drink and was told i would'nt be served by a staff member cos Cameron said so and after going up to him to find out what the actual problem was i was bemused to be told i was barred (for no stated reason) and to get out so it's a fine pub as long as you do not question certain staff members if they are obviously scamming customers playing cash game machines and abusing positions of authority by issuing bans when a customer enquires what they are playing at as they simply throw you out whilst laughing arrogantly, it was a very chavvish way to behave and i expected better from a place that normally has a happy atmosphere most times but it has evidently gone slightly downhill recently. | ||

As she hadn't made this drink I didn't see the problem and asked if she could make this change. her reaction was to look at me asif i'd poured the drink over her head and said do you want to make up you mind in a aggresive tone. To which I replied im sorry but i dont like your tone.........if your not happy with my tone you and friends can leave!. Which is what we all did leaving 5 poured drinks which she had poured at the bar. Leaving for a gret night with no managers on a power trip coz they have a walkie talkie strapped to her 40 inch waist. | ||

| Well i got attacked in rush from 5 teenage girls for no reason, apart from the fact that i was apparently looking at them funny! The door steward kindly man handled me and threw me out into the street, being a 26 year old professional woman i have never been put out a bar in my life, in the process my £300 designer watch and my £500 Gucci bag got stolen along with all my money and credit cards and not one member of staff offered me help or called the police. Apparently all people who are 'involved' in a fight get removed from the premises, me being one of them!? much to my partners delight he had to come and collect me from town to take me home to clean up my burst lip and bloody nose. Not a bar i would recommend in a hurry. | ||

| We ventured back to the Cramond Brig after some friends had told us the new owners had transformed the place. We were not dissapointed; great new decor, friendly staff and an excellent menu. I had the pork belly which was yummy, and my wife really enjoyed the heb crusted Salmon. They also have a great new wine list - the Vina Real Rioja was perfect with the Pork! | Visited the UK in November 2007. Must have visited 30 pubs over the course of 10 days, some of which are famous. Without a doubt, the Scotsmans' Lounge is the one I remember the best. We were heading back to the hotel after a day of sightseeing, but as soon as we heard the music coming out of this place, we had to stop for a drink (turned into many). What we found was an incredible little pub with great music, great drink, a party-filled atmosphere and friendly staff. That one drink turned into many. Wish we had places like this in Canada. | ||

The staff were very unfriendly and seemed put out that we were there, they were not busy as my guests and I were the only ones in! Also didn't appreciate having to listen to the bar staff discuss their social life at a high volume! The breakfast was actually so bad I felt ill for the rest of the day. Half of it was cold and none of us ate it, after a few bites we decided to leave it! Didn't say anything to the staff on duty as we knew that they wouldn't have cared at all! | Before our good mate Brian (Edinburgh local) took us to this pub he told us it was the best pub in Edinburgh by the time we were where leaving after our 3 days stay we told him he was wrong and said This is the best pub in the world MATE. At first we taught we'd just have one but we where soon lured in by the magical atmosphere within. Our first night here there was a great duo of a fiddler and a guitarist. They played traditional Irish and Scottish music and all my mates sang along, what a pub mate. The drink was so cheap but the ice cubes must have been expensive because they where very tight when it came to giving them out! :) We all left the pub well oiled that night for little or no money! The next day we went to another pub but no1 could settle because we where all very excited of going back to The Scotmans Lounge we had heard that there was a different band on this night and that they where brillant. When we got back to it we cud hardly get in the door but everyone inside squeezed in as they always do in this pub to accomodate people. Great pub mate When we got inside we where not let down by the band, there was a wee scottish man but he was no ordinary scottish man he was a chinese scottish man! Probably one of the most talented Chinese Scottish men I have ever seen. His partner played some sort of a music instrument but I don't no the name of it, it was like a bag or sack with pipes coming out of it and was very loud. My friend Enda liked the band so much he recorded them on his camera phone and we have watched them every day since. Another magical night was had by us all in this hidden gem and again we left with plenty of money and a deep since of belonging and love for what we now describe as The Best Pub In The World. We meet many of the regulars and the staff were very nice. The one down side I have of this pub and I am clutching at straws here is perhaps the toilets could be closer to the band or maybe equiped with speakers so you won'tt have to miss hearing the band. On our last day we went back for one last drink and a few snaps and we joked with the barman that we would be interested in opening up The Scotmans Lounge in our own home town and had he ever taught of franchising it out! I don't think he took us serious but you never know.I am already planning my next trip back to what we now call The Greatest Pub in the World Mate | ||

| After frequent visits ( more than they deserve) to this pub I now feel the need to write about the terrible service in this establishment. Although the food ordered was of decent quality and value, this was overshadowed by dirty tables, unclean surroundings ( some sort of moulding fruit on the radiator!) and terrible service from both the waitress and bar staff. A little manners go a long way. Unfortuantely it appears everytime I've been in here, regardless of who is working, the bar staff are very rude.. including what I assume was the manager.. leading by example I see! | ||

| I found this tiny Pub 2 years ago on holiday in Scotland. I returned several times to take John's guided malt tours and learn from his expertise. The food is exceptional and almost magically appears from a kitchen no larger than a broom closet. | The Grosvenor has got to be one of the most unreliable venues we have ever been booked for! The mangers Michael and James had booked us for a gig and decided because it was quiet we weren,t needed. This was after we had turened up with all our equipment to play, which they did not refund us for!! Also these managers were so cowardly and dishonest they decide to hide in their offices for half an hour before they came to speak to us! They then decided to lie to our face and say their bookings were done by an agent but James told me to take bookings from Michael and we negotiated dates and prices right there and then, because they were also to tight to pay our band the asking price. I strongly recommend all musicians not to go near this venue as they will just mess them about. No honour amoungst theives eh!!!!!!!! | ||

Don't walk in there with your camera slung round your neck when there is a sign outside which clearly states 'no cameras' or you're asking for it! Fantastic selection of whiskies and ales, and, considering most pubs these days make do with a couple of bottles of new world piss behind the bar, a great selection of wines and champagne. A veritable Aladdin's cave. And, contrary to some of the reviews I've read on here, the staff are perfectly polite and hospitable in my experience, unless you're a 50 something, sandals and socks wearing, tight arse bitter drinker, in which case you don't deserve it anyway. | ||

| i was on a hen night on Sunday 4th January and our group ended up in this pub. It was a great night, great music playing however at the end of the night one particular bar staff managed to ruin the whole night. We were just putting on our coats to leave and a staff member (refused to give his name, fat brown curly hair) came over to us as we were leaving and shouted at all of us just to fuck out of the pub and said this in a very nasty manner. We said to him that we were just leaving and again he repeated the same and was very aggressive towards everyone who had been in great form. i felt that i could not leave the matter as he had been so rude and asked to speak to the manager who came over to us, again refused to give us his name. This manager refused to believe what we told him about his staff and stated to leav. At this point the ignorant barman started to make faces at us and laughed and then the man that stated that he was a the manager, really was not the manager and refused to get the manager for us. We had a great night out but unfortunately the staff ruined the night for us by the way it ended. The music was good but due to the staffs attitude would never return to this pub again. | ||

Disgusting mess, the pie looked like it had been kept warm for too long, and the pastry (if you could call it that) was black and had dried up edges, when first delivered I thought it was just gravy which was making it look dark 'til I looked closer, the 'steak' very little and one piece was just fact, the pots were nice (surprisingly) but the vegetables were overcooked. We tried to call a waitress over but they were too busy, and no one came to us to ask if everything was OK, until when the plates needed collecting, then when I told her it was unsatisfactory, she just reported it to the management, no apology, nothing at all, end of .... Altogether it was an apalling meal. | ||

That said they do not seem able to adjust their staffing to cope, and the time taken to be served can sometimes be ridiculous. If live music is on then conversation is shouting only, in all areas of the bar, and coupled with the actually music the whole night can be a bit of an assault on the senses. Good choice of ales if that is important to you. Some of the (female) bar staff need to remember what they are actually there to do and act like they are professionals. Too many times i have been made to feel that I should be lucky just to be getting sreved by them. No warmth, chat or smile. Maybe you have to be a regular local before you get that sort of treatment in this bar! | ||

In my experience of this bar you will generally not be hassled in this manner. However, you cannot legislate for every customer/regular and if it happens to you I would just try to ignore it and not allow it to spoil your enjoyment of this otherwise pleasant bar. Re. the toilets. I am afraid they are not always in good nick and , although it is not an excuse, the same could be said for almost all of the other bars round and about. It is probably fair to say that the time of your visit may influence all of the above; it must be a tricky business to meet all of the demands of a very busy bar on a Fri/Sat night, versus 3pm on a wet Wednesday... | ||

| Met a local bus driver who suggested my wife and I stop there for lunch. Upon nearing the Canny Man I noticed an exterior sign listing the rules. No cell phones! Perfect I thought! Was befuddled by the write and order system at the bar but so what? Asked for a table in the dining room and when seated noticed the patrons were apparently well heeled and well behaved. Family groups on special day outings, couples out for a meal and a drink, etc. I absolutley loved my selection from the menu. The waitress did warm up to us and was actually very pleasant. I had read many reviews on many sites about how bad this place is in their treatment of customers. That was not our experience at all. It is eclectic to say the least. At the end of the night we handed in four tickets to the cloak room and only received three items, missing the hen's handbag. When she argued this with the attendants, the bouncers appeared and literally carried her out and barred her - like we would ever go back! And don't even get me started on the state of the toilets. | Any premises with an alcolhol licience found guilty of serving under 18s will lead to huge fines and loss of licience. It it therefore your obligation to verify your (or your guests) age. In many other countries a uk driving licience will not be considored a valid form of ID as it is not recognised in that country. If you worked on a bar and someone offered a foereign ID, how would you know it is not a forgery ? Unless you were from that country and could recognise a fake or valid ID ?? | The horrendous treatment I received here has led me to launch a campaign to boycott Cloisters. I am an American who has studied and worked in Edinburgh for the past 2 years and have never had a problem ordering a drink anywhere. That is until I tried to show my visiting American friends, age 23 and 26, what a cute, cozy pub was like in Edinburgh. I chose Cloisters because it was a bitterly cold night and they have a fireplace, and the lack of loud music would have made it ideal for us to complete a few crosswords. We had barely sat down for 3 minutes before the bartender intensely asked us if we would be buying a drink or just sitting. Feeling rushed to buy a drink (most places give you a moment to think of what you want and to survey what’s on tap), my 23 yrs old friend went up to the bar to order. She promptly came back and said she needed to get her ID that she had left in her wallet. Her boyfriend of 26 went back up to the bar with her where we were rudely told that they only accepted passports or UK driver licenses, (our passports were at the B&B or home) and that our American driver licenses were invalid. Then, we were condescendingly told that we had to be over 18 to legally be allowed in the pub, and since we could not verify our age with the appropriate documentation, we would have to leave. I have never been treated so rudely! None of us looked underage, and the manner with which he asked us to leave was very unprofessional and discriminatory. Cloisters is advertised in many American guide books of the city, so you would expect them to recognise American IDs coupled with strong American accents. But apparently they want to keep their pub exclusively British. I will never again set foot in Cloisters, and I will definitely make sure than any other Americans that are thinking of visiting Edinburgh should know to avoid such a terrible place. | ||

Trying to shed it's old, less than savoury image, Siglo is now a genuinly decent venue catering for everyone and anyone. Over two floors, you have the choice to either chill in the Burlesque themed bar downstairs or dance in the club upstairs, which, depending on which night you go on, plays anything from funky house, indie, dance or cheese from a selection of established edinburghs DJs. While not recently seen as a venue for the 'cool kids' changes are afoot and Siglo, I believe is becoming an important and and soon to be reconised addition to Edinburghs nightlife. | ||

The range and quality of beers is pretty good, well-kept and presented, and the selection of whiskys is ample. Not the sort of pub you'd choose as your local, but definitely in the must-visit category. World class? Maybe. Unforgettable? Totally. | ||

| We too were very tired from our touring. We stopped in the pub for a quick pint and some chips. We had our four children with us. We sat upstairs and had a wonderful break. The service was very friendly! Don't know if things have changed but we had no problems with our children in tow. Oh and it was 4 o'clock when we visited. | ||

| I LOVE this pub. It has character, age, authenticity and charm in an age of modernity, falsehoods and lack of anything approaching substance. I always feel welcome, I can keep my own counsel or find a new friend. It's a great tavern in the best traditions of Scottish pubs, if you haven't been yet you should go there soon! | ||

David A Best Real Ale in Stockbridge/Newtown! | ||
| A mate and I popped in to this brilliant wee boozer last night to take in the champions league football with a few real ales. The ale was of the highest quality and the bar staff were also really helpful and knowledgable. Equally as good was the four screens on offer, two showing the Celtic game and two showing the Man U game. Definitely a great bar for lovers of beer and sport and will definitely return to try their food menu during the day which the locals assured me is excellent! | ||
