 Sunday lunch
First time to-day, but not the last. A really honest plate of dinner, well cooked, very reasonable choice, served in a friendly manner. Clean surroundings. What more could you want?

 Closed down now
I pulled the last pint on the night it was shut down as the Three Tuns in early 1977. I worked there when it re-opened as the Riverside Inn starting in about July 1977.

 Moody Manager
On Saturday, some freinds, my wife
and myself attended The Talbot
restaurant in Bishopton, something
we had done a number of times.
Despite booking a table to avoid
waiting, the four of us were
eventually shown to our table
Thirty five minutes after the time
we booked for. No apologies or
explanations were given.
After eating an acceptable
starter, we eventually received
our main course over one hour
after the time we had booked for.
I had ordered a Fillet steak and
asked for it to be cooked
medium. Unfortunately it was
served Rare. Not a bit rare but
very rare with all but the outside
being raw red meat.
I wasn't happy and asked for a
member of staff to attend the
table with a view to sending it
back to be further cooked. The
restaurant manager/owner decided
to stick his two penneth in and
became very confrontational and
intimidating. Criticism was
something he obviously could not
tolerate. He ranted about problems
he'd had with his father that day
which was something I didn't wish
to hear. The manager then lost the
plot and ordered the four of us
out of the premises, which we were
glad to do under the
circumstances.
What are we, a bunch of tearaway
rowdy teenagers? No, I am a
disabled 62 year old man who uses
a walking stick and has inoperable
cancer, heart disease, diabetes,
Coeliac disease and arthritis, and
I'm the youngest.
The man obviously doesn't have the
temperament to accept criticism or
to run a restaurant.
Whatever happened to the old
adage, rule one:-The customer is
always right and rule two :- if
the customer is wrong, refer to
rule one.
You live and learn and hopefully
the reader will bear this tale in
mind when deciding where to go.

 NICE PLACE
Love this pub! have been aregular visitor fo rthe past 4 years and although the landlady can seem a bit harsh at times, she runs a tight ship, doesn't suffer fools gladly, keeps the louts out and serves up lovely food.
A fab pub where you can sit and have a chat without having to shout over loud music.

................May not be everybodies cup of tea ans i can see that some of the Ladies might be intimadated by her because she is a stong,no-nonsense successfull lady.
but she runs a good pub with good food and doesn't suffer fools or weaklings. So grow up girls and Man up little boys because underneath Maureen is a pussy cat.

I was recommended the talbot through a friend. 6 years on I love it more and more. The ambience the cuisine is no less than a Michelin star restaurant! I have also had several groups of friends and such good feedback! God bless your business and my wishes are it stays and maintains its good reputation for many more years to come .

Worst Landlady I have ever come across
Cant comment on the food but the landlady needs to go on a customer service course - a loud mouth bully as previously stated just about sums her up to a tee, the worst landlady I have ever had the displeasure of meeting, a truely horrid woman.

 very poor food
booked table for ten and had to order the food the day before. Food was only just warm. My wife had the Parmo which was made using a very cheap piece of chicken. My steak pie was in fact meat with two thin pieces of pastry. We went as it was recomended but we will definately not be returning

 awful landlady
Would not recommend this restaurant for a relaxing evening. The Landlady is a loudmouthed bully who rushes you through your meal and shouts at her poor waiting staff.
It certainly does not make for a relaxing night out. The food on the other hand is fantastic. What a shame!

 Not a pub anymore
I can't understand why this place is on a website called Best Pubs. It has been a pub for centuries but the current owners have turned it into nothing more than a restaurant.

Look at all the reviews - they are from people who drive there for a meal. No-one talks about this place as a pub as you would never think of going there if you were just out for a drink - unless your idea of a night out is drinking in those restricted areas restaurants put you whilst waiting to be seated.

So again I ask - why is it on a website promoting the best pubs?

Four of us went last night, the Food was excellent! I had Monk fish wrapped in Parma Ham,delicious.Congratulations to the Chef,he's a star. Have been to more expensive eateries(have i spelt that right?!) and the food and presentation at the Tavern far exceeds these. Will definitely be going again.

 Disapointed
I am sorry to say the last time I visited the Talbot for a meal my company and I were rather disapointed.
It would seem a cut back on the usual lovely bread rolls and portions had been made.
The portions of food were smaller to.
the service was rather slow, however they were busy.
It would be nice if the food was served correctly instead of being handed across the table for the diner to place in position.
I have frequented this nice pub for many years and always enjoyed the beer, food and service. Lets hope this time was a one off

I dine at the Talbot whenever I get the chance. The choice is always very good and the quality equally so. Staff are very attentive whilst maintaining the balance of not being over fussy. I often recommend this establishment to my friends. Good quality eating places are rare and this is one.

I chose to have our Wedding Aiversary meal here and as usual it was fabulous. Lovley relaxed atmosphere, beautifully decorated, white table cloths, got dressed up and felt others had made an effort too. Food choice very good and cooked to perfection, melt in the mouth pork and beef. friendly staff and customers. Bill more than we thought but no complaints as it was excellent!

Have to agree with Davros.
It is because of the landlady we go to the Tavern regularly as drinkers and diners.
Because of her high standards we can enjoy a night in a pub that is clean, friendly and has a good atmosphere - no need for shouting above loud music here or avoiding gangs of drunken youths.
Bar staff are also amazing - making sure that people are served in turn.
Keep it up Maureen - you run a great pub

 High Standards
What more can you ask for from your local boozer? The lager is excellent, the food is excellent and the bar staff are excellent. The landlady has very high standards and maintains these very high standards which is what you want in a pub isn't it??. The pub is also void of riff raff, and it's immaculately clean and that's all down to the landlady.

 Mediocre food and mediocre service
Great selection on the menu but the food arrived cold. Drinks poor too -The Coca Cola definitely wasn't - it was watery and tasteless. Food arrived barely lukewarm. Great menu selection but poor service and quality and way over priced for the quality. Won't be revisitng.

 smitns arms impending closure
Was my favourite watering hole for over 20 years, and I find this to be depressing news although inevitable as a series of Brewery Companies have crucified numerous landlords with a complete disregard for their financial survival.

 closure
why is my favourite pub in danger of closing? Are the breweries mad! This is a villge pub and as much a community facility as a business, I fully understand the need for profit but not profiteering. The owners are killing the goose with outrageous rents, rates etc. This was a good pub run by dedicated and decent people driven out because they couldn't make a living due to greedy breweries.

 the green dragon
This pub is friendly with a good crowd and great bar staff !
the land lord and land lady get to know you from the moment you walk into the door -
If one hint at trouble Your removed from the pub to stop and trouble or cause trouble for anyone else,
This pub leads the way in the stockton pub whatch sceme to keep troupble makers out,
the drinks are at the right prices for young and old with non of the new flavers about - (like guinness and john smiths )
the place is kept clean and tidy Yes the music box was removed now you can hear your self think or talk to someone next to you without thumping music in your ear's

The bar is split into 3 areas with only one bar in the centre any one wishing to stand around the bar is welcome there is 2 lower sitting areas with chairs and tables for those who enjoy to sit down read the paper or relax - the upper area is where toilets are and the seating area where the dart board is is well used Theres no pool table As its not needed - a good mix of studants and older members - makes this a great place to visit

regular members attend the new years party in whitch the doors are locked and your in with a good crowd of people and a buffet layed on

 Addictive!!
This is my local, and proud I am of it! I daren't eat anywhere else because I know I'll be disappointed! The pork parmo is out of this world, not to mention the steak pie, gammon and chicken au poivre...! And unfortunately for the waistline, there's always at least one dessert that's irresistable! Not only that, the place is spotless and the staff are some of the friendliest I've come across. Love the landlady, she's a star! The only real problem is we can't stop going!!!

2 very talented chefs, and well done to the matrod
I am a regualar in the talbot and in my oppinon the food is second to none, this is without a doubt one of the best resteraunts in the area, i love the food, the chefs are very very talented and know exactly what to do. The resteraunt does however slip down on the service, employing many young waiters and waitreses, to be a top resteraunt all around this would have to be delt with. Dont get me rong the starters and main course are beutiful, beautiful food, beautiful garnish and you can tell the food comes from the heart! The deserts are also well garnished and taste delicioiuse, although the all do generally look the same they taste nice, i would not say exceptional though
