Carden Arms Andrew Bayliss Malpas Hidden Treasure.
Visited The Carden over Christmas after hearing very complimentary comments about the food from work colleagues. Arrived at 7pm on a friday and there were already a number of other customers eating away happily,and the atmosphere was warm and friendly,helped by not one but 3 roaring log fires. A very polite young waiter showed us to our table and got our drinks while we made our choice from the extensive menu,my wife deciding on seabass and me sticking to safety and ordering a sirloin. Our meals arrived about 15 minutes later and were nothing short of sensational!My steak was cooked perfectly (M-R),accompanied by roast cherry tomatoes,watercress and a lovely grilled field mushroom. Equally my wifes fish was full of flavour and presented superbly. Didnt have room for a pudding but there was a great selection,so we`ll save that for next time! A nice little touch was the chef stopping at our table on his way past and asking how our meals were! We wont hesitate to go back to the Carden Arms and would highly reccomend it !

This was our 5th visit and on Mother's Day, one of the busiest days of the year, we were once again most impressed with the food, the service and the welcoming atmosphere. Cannot fault this place, my compliments to the chef! and thankyou for a lovely afternoon. The 2 children in our party were also made so welcome.

I'm amazed by the poor review on here, we love the Stamford and visit quite regularly (we're going tomorrow, for example!) Food has always been well cooked and the service is prompt and pleasant. It might not be the cheapest, but then it's not cheap and cheerful food...!

Stamford Bridge Inn Louise Chester Used to love this place but service gone down hill
We go to this place regularly but unfortunately the last three times we have been have been poor and we'll not be going again. There are plenty of other places available in the area. One occasion the children's food (three of them) was all burnt. We complained but nothing was done. Another occasion my food didn't arrive untill all the other people at the table (four) had finished their meal because there was a mess up and they couldn't cope with the amount of people. Then the final straw was last night when we waited 30 mins for table (fair enough as we had been told this) but then when we were seated and ordered our food it took 50 minutes to arrive!!!now when you have been drinking for this while it is not what you want. Unimpressed by the staff's response, there were no jestures of good will and it was dissappointing. We won't be going there again as they can't cope when it is busy (and it regularly is) but the food is nice.

Lock Vaults The Texas Gals Chester Tom Be Da Man
Flew from the USA and then drove to Chester on what is our Christmas Day, Boxing Day for the UK. Afer settling into our wonderful flat we mosied on over to the Lock Vaults to be greeted with the most wonderful tender-of-the-bar Mr. Tom. Made us feel right at home. We visted the Vault several times over our travels and loved the pub. Will return next time were there. Thanks Tom!

Bickerton Poacher John Malpas The food is awful
I was on my way to Wrexham today and stopped for lunch. The only edible part of the carvery was the pork and red cabbage. The beef and roast potatoes were overcooked and the beg undercooked. The caulifilower was so rubbery it almost bounced of the plate when I tried to cut it with one of the blunt knives provided. As I was driving I asked for Coke, but when it arrived it tasted like watered down dental mouthwash

Myself and my family hav just spent the wkend at the bickerton poacher in our caravans and i have to say after reading these comments i was not going to have a meal but after seeing the carvery i changed my mind and am so glad i did it was delicious and the service was great the carvery was amazing so nice that i had one on the sunday too,we were made to feel very welcome,i have 3 children and they lovd it,they spent most of the weekend on the park and in the skittle alley,we will definately be returning to the bickerton poacher,i cant wait for another carvery..!!

Friday 22 August 2008, 10.45pm asked for a southern comfort of part of a large order and was offered a 'house alternative' which I accepted. The taste bore no resemblance to either southern comfort or even whiskey so I asked for a replacement which was refused. I complained and was then set upon by a drunken little twerp who claimed to be the licensee. He was aggressive, rude and told me to f*** off, by which time both myself and the large party were happy to do. However I do object at being stolen from and abused. Janet

Stamford Bridge Inn pulane Chester top marks!
My partner and I called in after a long walk in Delamere, ordered a couple of starters and sat outside with our dog. When they came they were very generous portions and tasted great, staff even bought out a container of water for the dog unprompted! We decided to go back again and have dinner and again we weren't dissapointed the veggi main was delicious and my partner looked very happy with his dinner too. My family and I went for a 70th birthday party meal last week. There were 25 of us but only 24 of us got to eat. I ordered the monkfish and it came to my table off so I sent it back and ordered the meatballs with pasta and that came to my table with the pasta uncooked, so I sent that back and by this time everybody had finished their food so there was no point to sit and eat on my own. And the cheek of it all the Manger came over to apologise for starving me and offered to buy me a sweet or a coffee because he didn't want me to go home hungry (I don't eat sweets) so I still went hungry and that was the end of the apology. Can't believe he left it like that and never offered any other compensation for my very spoiled evening with my family. Very dissapointed. Will never eat in there again. This is not the first time we have been dissapointed with the food here and I have since heard about other comments about the bad food so be careful what you order on the menu you may need to stick to the basic stuff.

I must say that l was very impressed by the change of the nags Head to what l saw last week. We ordered what they call the Royal Selection, it was a meal for 2 (£25), we had Prawn Crackers, then Thai Fish Cakes & Mini Spring Rolls, followed by 4 very different dishes, not all Thai l maigh add. ours were Thai Green Chicken Curry Red Cooked Pork Pad Thai Chicken Duck & Cashews. It was beautiful, and well presented the staff were very accomadating and in all a very pleasent evening

I can't believe some of the negative comments below... In my opinion this is the best pub, with the best food in Cheshire. The staff are friendly, conscientious and hard working. The food is delicious, hearty fare with generous portions. The prices are reasonable too. There is a lovely homely atmosphere in there and I honestly can't think of anywhere that beats it in the Chester/Mid-Cheshire area. Having visited the Bickerton Poacher for the first time in around 13years, since I left sixth form college, I have to say that I was truly amazed by the changes that have taken place within the pub itself. The decor and funiture choice, creates a roomy & cosy atmosphere. We visited the pub with our parents yesterday afternoon & to say we had a lovely afternoon out is quite an understatement. Our parents did tell us when we sat down that prior to having all the Stainless Steel Gas Food Heaters for the carvery, they had what was almost like tea light (candle) warmers. Which of course couldn't generate enough heat to keep the food warm (HENCE THE BAD COMMENTS EARLIER). They appear to have really got there act together now, the food was lovely and so were the sweets, the price of the carvery is also rather tasty at £7.95 per person. The only downside to our visit is when the waiters offer to get drinks, they seemed to forget about us and we had to remind them that we were waiting. I would give the Bickerton Poacher 5/5 if the service from the waiters/waitresses was 5/5, however I cannot. But if you want value for money and be that full up that you roll out of the pub then I recommend this beautiful rural pub to all of you.

What a lovely Restaurant. 5 of us came for dinner Thursday 30 Nov 06 and we had a superb night. What an amazing building, not what you expect when you pull up outside at all. The food was amazing, the service relaxed but attentive, the wine great, overall a thoroughly enjoyable night with no complaints whatsoever. We will definately return.

My wife and I dined at this pub last week and, it is safe to say, we will not be returning. We found the meal to be entirely unsatisfactory - lukewarm, badly presented and worst of all, the chicken was not thoroughly cooked! A recipe for disaster! Almost worse than this, however, was the attitude of the staff, who seemed more interested in talking to their friends and were most discourteous.

Went here on friday 24/11/06 with a group af friends and had a totally idyllic evening. The whole atmosphere within the restaurant greets you as you enter, the service was fantastic whilst unobtrusive and the menu offered some of the most mouth watering food I have been showed for a long time. I have spent all my working life in the service industry and I realy thought that I had seen and experienced almost every thing. I had passed the poacher on numorus occassions and never stoped so I did I had heard that new people had taken over and it was out of this world especially the Carvery on a Saturday night and all day Sunday. Great enviroment great decor and what a greeting, real skittle alley,wishing well, real ales o and then the food. I have to say it again one of the best if not the best Sunday dinner I have ever had. Well done so good to see that some places realy care and can get it right.

...after arranging a meal at the Bickerton Poacher for a friends birthday for 10 of us (one of whom was over from Australia on a rare visit) we met there at 5pm on a sunday got to our table and ordered our food off the friendly waitress.....after over an hours wait we complained and we given a free drink whilst we waited yet another 35 before receiving any food, then a chair collapsed from under one of the party (she is about 6st wet through) but worst of all she was holding her little baby at the time. She badly hurt her back and was offered a free pudding by the pathetic excuse for a waitress who didnt even mention the accident book let alone tell the manager what had happened. The meal was poor and the food was cold. Really a terrible place to eat. I will not be visiting again. EVER.

Absolute shocker - service is non existant! We made a 20 mile journey to visit this pub on recommendation on Sun 20th August at 2.45 hoping to enjoy the carvery. We spoke to one of the waitresses when we entered and asked if we needed to book, she said it was'nt aproblem as they were quiet and showed us to a table and said she would be back in 2 mins to take our order. 35 mins later she still had'nt been back, but in the meantime had sat down and served 2 other family groups. WhenI approched her to ask about taking our order she just turned her back and walked into the kitchen!!. I would have understood if it was a busy time but there were only 10 (max) diners there. Give this place a miss if you have any sense.

Nags Head John afterton Chester changed managers
The nags head recenlty changed hands. It now offers Thai & Chinese food, as well as the owners special dishes, he will tell you if asked that they have 15 different curries in store, and are at current cooking 5 of them. Staff responsive, and the rpice most reasonbale. Little bit of a wait, but that was fine as the food was beautiful. We had Thai Fish Cakes Ramaquin madras Fried Thai Spicy Chicken ********* House tir Fry Chicken 3/4 chilli's Spicy Pork & Cashews Thai Green Curry. All came with chopstix, wet towel and boiled rice. Great, will go again, but its shuts for 6 weeks on the 21st Aug 06 for a major refurb so Robert tells me, and he says the menu will be even bigger!

Gamekeeper Marty Chester good local pub
My wife and I stayed in Chester in June and went to few local pubs . Some were good and some were downright crappy. We wound up frequenting The Gamekeeper. Eddie the landlord and manager went out of his way to make us feel at home, as well as the locals-Tommy, Obo, Tiny -to name a few. Would recommend . Great atmosphere and cold beer. Will visit again on our next holiday from the USA

Stamford Bridge Inn Debi Chester Excellent
I have just been reading the comments and as i have just booked a table for my family and myself for the 4th time this year I would like to add we have had excellent service every time, nothing has been any problem at all! from a group of 18 visitng on a very sad memorial from Canada to my special mum's birthday! excellent food and fab service!thanks guy's you deserve more credit for what you do!! ps if you do have children which i do, be prepared to look after them yourself and not expect a pub beer garden to do it for you!!

Well I used to work @ The Poacher before coming to Uni and it was ace, locals were sound, we had a laugh and it was a friendly atmosphere! If it was so bad- why was it packed on a Sunday all day, and then packed on Sunday Quiz Night? The food was very good, and we always got compliments! Try it out- its amazin!

disappointing attitude of bar staff, was refused entry whilst on works day out when one of our group was seenwearing a rugby shirt, that in itself was no issue however the bar staff would not compromise when one of the group offered to cover up the offending garment with a jacket!!..went to the Victoria instead

Great little pub in the centre of a a mixed bag of a city when it comes to pubs. Had a lovely Sunday roast there last week, and ended up staying all evening as there was live music on. Dunno weather the management has changed but it is a whole heap better in The Shrop than it used to be!

We had passed this pub a few times and had heard that it was worth a visit, but on calling in there with colleagues one Wednesday in February (party of 4) they weren't serving any food (?). We went to the Copper Mine a few miles further on, at Broxton, and that was superb.

Bickerton Poacher David Parkes Malpas Brilliant
The Bickerton Poacher is a truly amazing pub. It is set in a rural hamlet, over shadowed by Buckley Hill. I have been visiting the pub since I can remember, as my Dad used to take me for walks up the surrounding hillsides. Now as I am older I visit it with my girlfriend much more frequently than I used too. We love the food and drink in the pub, and the staff are always friendly. If you have never been before, I recommend this place. If you have children, the play area outside is fantastic, along with the brilliant out door seating. It is a brilliant outdoor area, especially during summer months. The inside of the pub is large but cosy. It has an indoor well, how many pubs can say that. The menu can be quite limited especially if you are in a large group. However the actual food quality makes up for that. The only downside to the pub is that it is too far away from Nantwich (where I live). Overall, Fantastic, Friendly Cosy

Ye Olde Kings Head Andrea Chester Best in Chester
We didn't even know there was a restaurant here until we popped in for a quick drink before exploring town on our last visit to Chester. We had a delicious meal with a superb bottle of Pinot Noir. We have even booked to stay here next time!

Custom House Inn Geoff Parkin Chester Dreadful
Had a meal there today (30 12 05)with my wife, my Leek and Cauliflower bake was Broccoli and Cauliflower no Leek. I passed it back to the waitress who returned it to the kitchen, she brought it back telling me the Leek was shredded in the sauce, nonsense, no such thing. She beat a hasty retreat, I did not want to cause a problem with my wife being there so we left never to return, what an insult to my intelligence and shocking service.

Marlborough Arms Tim Nelson Chester Wonderful pub.
This Californian and his wife couldn't have expected to visit a better pub in all the UK. Staying at the hotel next door, we found this clean and friendly establishment a total joy. The owner and his staff couldn't have been more friendly. We were greeted at the door by a sign that said, This is a friendly pub for friendly people. Upon entry, we were quicky greeted by the owner and his staff. Excellent. This Yank was chatted up with conversation from music to anti-French humor. Again, excellent. To my American brothers and sisters: Go here. Enjoy yourself. We shall never forget this place.

nice pub which is totally ruined by the attitude of the management towards staff which affects the customers. There needs to be safety gates on the playarea due to the nearby main roads. The reputation of the pub would be higher if there was more control over customer behaviour at weekends. Stamford Bridge Inn Deborah Fletcher Chester Definitely not for families with children
My husband, three year old son and I arrived at 6.30 on a glorious sunny Saturday evening in August, to meet eight friends with their children. Two friends placed an order, and the rest of us opted to wait until everybody had arrived. When we tried to order, at 7.02pm, we were told that outside dining orders would not be accepted after 7pm. Fair enough, so we said we would eat inside. However, we were then told that our children would not be welcome inside after 7pm either! What a fiasco. Two of us had ordered, and the rest had not, so we had to split up and find another pub. The two who had ordered incidentally waited almost an hour for their food. Definitely not satisfactory. And whilst I'm having my moan, in my opinion the play area is NOT suitable for younger children, and is far too far away from the dining area even for older children in my own opinion. If your child fell and hury himself or herself, there would be a strong possibility that you would not hear. Make your own minds up - we have!

Shady Oak Mrs A Thompson Tarporley wonderful day out
we have been too the shady oak several times and it has been a very pleasent experience, i have 2 children and there was plenty of things to keep them happy. the staff were very accomadating and the food has always been fantastic and therefor i would recommend everyone to go. the veiws from the cannal side tables is well worht a visit... p.s Mr Woods comments are from my expeirences very wrong and like i already said i would reccommend this pub too everyone.

Rake & Pikel Jeannette Hall Chester Chance Visit
Called by chance on the way home from a camping trip, wasn't planning on eating but the smells coming from the kitchen, and the extensive menu made it impossible to say no. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal and was very impressed with the home-made chicken nuggets for the kids. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Lovely atmoshere.

Nags Head Julie Whitehead Chester Food
We had a meal at the Nags Head on Monday evening 23rd May 2005. The meal was totally disappointing. My daughter had lasagne which she could not eat it was full of kidney beans which is quite unusual. My son in law had steak when it arrived the steak was cold. and still had the blood running out of it and was very pink. I had the cod which was quite nice but the broccoli had not been cooked. I feel very upset about this as it was a treat for my birthday and we just did not enjoy the meal. I made my comments clear to the Assistant Manager but no compensation was offered. I feel I have wasted £41.05 which is a lot of money for food that was very poorly cooked. I would be grateful if you could acknowledge receipt of this e-mail. When speaking to my sister in law and told her how disappointed we were she told me that her mum, dad and members of the family had a meal at the Nags Head a few weeks ago and they were very dissapointed. They were offered a discount on their bill. I was just told by one of you staff that we didnt do very well tonight. I would be grateful if you could re-imburse me with part payment of the meal. I will also put my comments in writing to the Manager with a copy of the bill. Thank you

Falcon Inn B A FORBES Chester THE FALCON
This is a treasure. I t is professionally run, with polite and attentive staff. The landlord is the chef and provides excellent restaurant quality food at pub prices. The bitter is 1.30 a pint and the lager 1.56 a pint all the time !!! It is a family owned brewery who only sell their own branded products, but they are all excellent. There is a major refurbishment to take place in September, lasting 3 months. I cannot wait to see the transformation, because it exhudes quality and atmosphere now.

I took the lovely lady for her birthday meal and found it to be excellent, What got me was the lack of menus, all the meals were on 4 blackboards and depended on what was caught the day before. I had the mussels to start and she had the smoked salmon, then we both had the Lobster for a main (well it was her birthday). All told it came to £57 including 3 drinks Which for what we had I found excellent value for money. Definitely going again soon.

I was appauled at the sevice and quality of food that my husband and I received on our visit on August Bank Holiday Monday. We were not informed of the long wait for food. Others that were served just after us were told of a 45 minute wait. When the food arrived it was literally 'thrown' on the table and I had to ask where the cutlery was. My husbands burger and bun were char grilled and my baguette filling was very lacking. It had approx a 5ml teaspoon of houmous in it and the vegetebles were cold. I felt embarresed about complaining as the place was very busy.

Oddfellows Arms hannah Chester ace!
i have known the owners and costomers of this pub for many years know,and i must say it is one of the best pubs i have seen in a long time,everyone there is welcoming and warming to new faces.It is more of a pub for quiet drinks an chatting in the day and some night times,but friday an saturday nights are excellent,just like new year was the year before last,the party was amazing!!! i hope you have the same opinions of this pub as i know for a fact that the old owners put alot of work into the place!
