 Great local pub
Local pub, serving the community with a Sunday local farmers market every 2 weeks in the car park. Serves locally brewed beer as well as the usual fare. Friendly staff and local customers, easy to sit and chat with people. Sunday lunch for meat eaters is excellent value.

 No heart in this pub
We visited this pub for a lunchtime snack. Not terribly welcoming - the Land Lady was not very personable and our presence seemed to be a bit of a nuisance to her. The lunch that we ordered was very poor value, small portions and not at all appetising. Not only does the decor need a make over, but the staffing and menu do too! We were therefore not surprised that the place was empty on a Friday lunch time. Obviously, we won't be going back to the Cross Keys in Cranfield!

An alternative pub, doesn't look that great from the outside but once your inside, its great, it has a wide selection of beers and the only place to play real music, if you like rock and indie its the place to go, Fridays more mainstream and saturdays very heavy.

WE NEED THE CLARENCE BACK FOR THE GAY COMMUNITY
I think it is bad that the clarence is no longer gay. it has been gay more than 10 yrs and they decide to get rid of us gay community from there. we only have one gay pub left and not every one goes there they like the clarence for there discos etc and we all had a choice of pubs to go to and now we dont. i think its discusting for us gay community to lose a gay pub for it to be turned into a pub for foriegners. where can we go now in bedford apart from the barley, i think its discrimating to the gay community. in other towns theres more than 2 gay pubs for gays to visit but here there aint and what about the gay people who cant travel outside bedford where will they go. i think if the gay community in bedford supported each other they will all get together and try and get the clarence back for the gay community and not let someone come in and take it away from us.ps the best times there was when russ and abby had it and tony and rick it was really buzzing at the weekends and there wasnt much trouble at all either if there was it was sorted out straight away. If we got that pub back for the gay community it would have to be runned by people who have had a lot of expierence in running pubs, decent staff and good entertainment on and listen to there customers what they think will be gd for the business and if they give to the community what they need they will respect and support back in the same way.

 Tis Kewl!!
Cant believe what previous two people said & feel so moved i have to write something. First i want to correct a couple of things. 1) I think you'll find that it was rick & tony that ruined the clarry with their seedy escapades & forever chasing after young boys dressed in leather. Their whole reign was a sham & im glad theyve gone. Brad n Chris have worked wonders with that place, its a travesty that bedford are losin such gr8 guys.
2) Its cause of the kind of rubbish those last two spouted that the bedford gay scenes gotta bad name. Obviously from their tone they dont partake in it like the rest of us. Well im glad. Stay at home and spout ur poison there. Pathetic bitches.
As far as im concerned i cant wait for chris n brad to open their next gay place. Until then il be going to their str8 places because its obvious from the rubbish thats been said on here that me & the bedford gay scene need a trial seperation while it grows up. Well done B and C, u did a blinding job! At the end of the day no one else had the nuts to do it. I'd be bloody proud of what you achieved and of having ur own businesses so young. Wish i was like you when i was that age. As for the critics, let them fester in their own jealousy! Enough said! respect boyz, best of luck. Andrew x.

 Downhill fast
It was great when Rick & Tony had it, and Russel & Abby, but since Rick & Tony left, it became really bad - best move now if it is pulled down and re-develloped - Bradleigh has ruined this venue for Bedford - hope he does not affect The Barley Mow in the same way!

 GOOD GLAD YOUR GOING
I HOPE THIS PLACE GETS KNOCKED DOWN! IT'S BEEN BAD SINCE YOU STARTED AND GETTING YOUR STAFF TO WRITE STUFF ISNT GOING TO GET YOU ANYWHERE! YOU NEVER HEAR WHAT YOUR PUBLIC TELL YOU AND YOU WONDER WHY YOU HAVEN'T MADE ANY MONEY

 Bradleigh's Bradleigh
I work at the Clarence and thought I would tell you chris and bradleigh are leaving. It has been a brilliant place to work with a fantastic team. These last two weeks will be your last chance to come down to the clarry as no one has bought the pub so it looks like it will be knocked down. To anyone who is interested we are celebrating world aids day tomorrow night and having a massive leaving party for chris and Bradleigh next Saturday the 9th. Thank you for the support. x x

 I love it!
Im glad the previous two queens don't go anymore. The atmosphere is so much better now all the bitching is gone. The boys who've got it at the mo do a brilliant job and its one of the friendliest places ive been too. When i first started goin a year ago i was only 19 and i hadnt been to many places but its intimidating finding somewhere to go when you first come out. The landlords and their staff made me and my m8s feel so welcome, the music was wicked and i even came home with money in my pocket so it turned out to be a cheap nite out too. Go almost every week now and love Chris and Brad to bits. Well done guys, keep ignoring the idiots!! You do a gr8 job and everyone loves ya! Mwah!!!!

i think it was much better with the previous people. fantastic atmosphere then, everyone getting to know each other. as the then landlods of the pub mingled with the patrons every night, 7 nights a week. gosh i miss the good old days of when the clarence was buzzing, hip n friendly.

 the ruination of the barley
The Barley was fantastic when Dot & Daph had it, but it has now become victim to modernisation and is now a typical male dominated, loud music every night, expensive, no character type of a place. Come back Dot and Daph!!

MEMORIES OF LIVING /WORKING AT KINGS ARMS
i worked and lived in this pub about 1969 with my husband and small son now in his 30s just wondered if it was the same olde worlde, it was owned by GREEN KING, AT THAT TIME. I remeber we had a flat kind of separate over an out building/ I think we went from there to BIRD ITH HAND HENLEY . JUST REMENISING// then we had our own pub in Haverhill Suffolk.regards M S,

very enjoyable dinner time menu for 14 'walkers'
The Slaters Arms was chosen for a dinner time menu - Tuesday 5th July 2006, to accomodate, after a 5 mile walk, a group of 14. All were very pleased with service from ordering/delivery and payment - No negative feedback at all - would recommend and use the pub again

unpredictable food hours; very indifferent staff
The sign outside this pub states that it serves meals 7 days a week from 12-9.

On 2 separate occasions in the same week, we visited this pub for a meal. On both occasions, we were told by very indifferent staff that they weren't serving food at that time.

Its a real shame because this pub has an excellent beer garden, with a bouncy castle for the children.

still a grat place to go
totally disagree with joe, its the best place in the loac area. never seen any trouble and i go in every week. security are great. the music is camp and cheesy on a friday and clubby on a saturday, so something for everyone. chris and bradleigh are really welcoming and so are the whole team. well recommended. clarencebedford.com is their website so you can see for yourself

 Excellent food and top people
I used to work near this pub and regularly went in for lunch. The food is great, they'll happily change things around to your taste and it's very cheap. They have a daily special which is typically 3 or 4 and we are talking proper good-sized pub meals. After a few trips they got to know me and are very friendly.
It does feel like a countryside local.

 Too Child Friendly
Recently refurbished after a small fire, this pub has all the warmth of an Eskimos jock strap!
If you enjoy the sight and sound of young children (3 - 14years old) running and shouting around (and in) the pub often up till closing time then this is the place to come

 mothers day meal
I have just been to the Slaters Arms for Mothers Day Meal and I think it was disappointing. To start with the beer was cloudy. I informed the barstaff and they agreed but did not attempt to change the barrel only to offer another brew which i did not really want and was warm. The meal was no more than a microwaved ready meal served in a soup dish and the staff could not tell the difference between roast beef and roast lamb and this is the worst meal I have ever had in a restaurant

Ye Three Fyshes was the best pub in Bedfordshire before Greene King closed it down abruptly last year. I have spent many a drunk and happy night in the bar in which I drank and worked for 7 years. I only hope they re-open it in the near future.
