 Shocking
Went in for a quick pint while our table at the restaurant over the road was being sorted. The miserable portly barman wouldn't serve my 21 year old son so we had to leave, that's was after me telling my son how good a pub it was! Will never darken its door again - un believable.

 Good beer
Beer is generally first class. Some info here is out of date (there's no longer a laundrette next door!). Not a patch on its Southside outlet though (same name), mostly as the Southside staff are more welcoming. Needs to improve its attitude to customers in Broughton, but otherwise a fine drinking pub.

 Great Music
Go on a Sunday evening especially when Bedford Falls are playing. We caught them on August 18th and they were nothing short of brilliant - age is obviously improving them! The Deuchars isn't bad either!

 Cask Marque: EXPIRED
I'd heard the Phoenix had improved a lot lately. The last time I was in, five years ago, there was a guy snorting lighter fuel from a canister down his sleeve, but no-one seemed to mind as he was a regular.

I suppose the Cask Marque expired sign on the front should have been a warning. We went in on a quiet Tuesday night and the barman managed to mishear A pint of gold, please and Oh and another as a request for a pint of Edinburgh Gold and an IPA. Given the taste of the gold, maybe we should have taken the IPA (although it was a *very* short measure), but the IPA was swapped for a second gold with very ill grace. When we sat down, we tookone sip and decided the beer was undrinkably vinegary. The barman - surlier than ever - claimed the beer was just on (unlikely on a quiet Tuesday) tasted it and said it was fine. To confirm, he handed the beer to the other barman who failed to hide the facial pucker as he also claimed the beer was fine.

We left the beer on the table and left the pub. Maybe I'll try it again in another five years.

I wish there were more places like the Black Bull
Great music, friendly staff, excellent atmosphere, always. However, if you don't want to listen to loud rock/metal and be surrounded by people dressed in black with piercings, tattoos and leather, then don't bother showing up. The regulars will definitely appreciate it.

 nomenclature
Like the Marina Hotel half a mile dow the road, this was ALWAYS known as the 'Northern Bar', and had been since well before my father's time, too. Why the vogue for changing the names of what were icons in this city? Even the 'Athletic Arms' has now signage describing it as the 'Diggers', a far more common but incorrect name for the premises. Nobody actually CALLED it the Athletic Arms, but that's hardly the point, is it?

The worst night club I have ever been in. It was Filthy, Musty, Rough, Not a nice place to visit. The carpets were sticky with broken glass everywhere. The security had stations above themselves and by their behaviour they clearly shared the same brain cell. Thy were very heavy handed with the customers. Not a good image representing our capital city. Dont waste your money.

Pivo Edinburgh Worst Bar In Edinburgh
Don't believe the promotional hype reviews by the owners. This is the worst pub in Edinburgh by far, some very unfriendly bar staff and all unfriendly clientele. Known to the locals as a dive. Czech themed in a stereotypical way with misspelled Czech murals. Highly attractive to foreigners who don't know any better unless you are Polish or part of some other ethnic clique you will be made to feel unwelcome. You will never see the same people in here twice this is what the bar lives on - a steady stream of foreign transients and unsuspecting tourists. It is nobody's local for a very good reason and the food = crisps. Avoid at all costs.

 Good Pub Spoiled By Manager
We were visiting Edinburgh for the long Easter weekend. This was near to our B&B. Not a bad choice of beers some cask ones (A new thing according to the very welcoming locals) The choice on the juke box was huge and the locals have great and varied taste in music. Get in early if you want to hear your choices! As the last couple of reviewers said the bald manager is a bit of a sourpuss. Somebody should give him a second facial expression for his birthday. Difficult to tell if he is actually that pissed off as you can't understand a word. In conclusion good pub terrific and very friendly locals What a pity the skin head manager brings the whole atmos down with his scowling. (Lost 2 stars for that)

 room for improvement
I have been going to the Barony Bar for over 20 years and have always been fond of it's relaxed atmosphere and excellent beers. Unfortunately on my last visit I encountered arguably the worst service I have ever experienced in a pub. The rude, unsmiling barmaid appeared to consider such basic activities as saying please and thank-you and clearing away glasses as beneath her station. Upon leaving my friend returned our glasses to the bar and said thank you only to be greeted with stony silence. A busy weekend you might think for the harassed barmaid. Not at all, a quiet monday evening with about half a dozen punters. It will be a long time before any of us are back.

 Needs Improvement
Went in for Breakfast, it was the worst I have ever had in Edinburgh. The staff were very unfriendly and seemed put out that we were there, they were not busy as my guests and I were the only ones in! Also didn't appreciate having to listen to the bar staff discuss their social life at a high volume! The breakfast was actually so bad I felt ill for the rest of the day. Half of it was cold and none of us ate it, after a few bites we decided to leave it! Didn't say anything to the staff on duty as we knew that they wouldn't have cared at all! Very dissapointing and we will never return!

 good food but abysmal service
After frequent visits ( more than they deserve) to this pub I now feel the need to write about the terrible service in this establishment. Although the food ordered was of decent quality and value, this was overshadowed by dirty tables, unclean surroundings ( some sort of moulding fruit on the radiator!) and terrible service from both the waitress and bar staff. A little manners go a long way. Unfortuantely it appears everytime I've been in here, regardless of who is working, the bar staff are very rude.. including what I assume was the manager.. leading by example I see!

 Poor service
I went in after shopping in Edinburgh on Saturday. The barman was downright rude and I walked out without staying to taste the beer. Additionally I find that the GA isn't what it once was (a great pub). The toilets are less than clean and the whole pub smells of stale ale. It's gone from one of my most favourite pubs to my most disliked. I'd choose the Cafe Royal any day.

 Credit where credit is due
I like this pub a lot and would recommend it for a great choice of beers and generally a nice atmosphere.

Its location means that there is usually a mix of locals and tourists. There are doormen present, at least on Fri/sat night which is the only time I have been. This at least means that the clientele is reasonably well behaved!

 slow service
Although to be fair it is invariably Fri or Sat night when I am there so it is very busy. That said they do not seem able to adjust their staffing to cope, and the time taken to be served can sometimes be ridiculous. If live music is on then conversation is shouting only, in all areas of the bar, and coupled with the actually music the whole night can be a bit of an assault on the senses.
Good choice of ales if that is important to you. Some of the (female) bar staff need to remember what they are actually there to do and act like they are professionals. Too many times i have been made to feel that I should be lucky just to be getting sreved by them. No warmth, chat or smile. Maybe you have to be a regular local before you get that sort of treatment in this bar!

 Bouncers are facist thugs!
We went to Mood for a hen night, and I have never met such a bunch of thugs as the bouncers. At the end of the night we handed in four tickets to the cloak room and only received three items, missing the hen's handbag. When she argued this with the attendants, the bouncers appeared and literally carried her out and barred her - like we would ever go back! And don't even get me started on the state of the toilets. Go to any nightclub but this one!

 Dont Bother
Mood is poplular with students simply beause its a cheap place to get drunk. Aside frm that there is nothing much going for it. Last time i was there (ages ago) there was broken glass everywhere. Spilt drinks all over the floor and some tables were not cleared all night. The bouncers didnt have a clue about anything either, i witnessed 2 fights none of which were broken up, however one guy got thrown out after argueing over wrong change. Go elsewere several good clubs are not far away.

 Not Great!!!!
Started drinking in QBar about 4 years ago when they had brilliant staff and management and the place was actually clean!!!
Now it seems to be a place for jakies and drop outs during the day and at night it is quite scary, and before anyone says anything i drink in some rough pubs but this place is a joke and should implement some rules at least!!! All in all it isnt what it used to be and i would recommend giving it a wide berth and just head to omni centre for decent, clean bars (with nice sorry working toilets) and nice staff both security and bar staff.

 Great atmosphere - sexy punters!
A great place to go on a sultry, mild evening in the beer garden. Hang out and eye up the talent. Location makes it popular with the cute gay boys looking for a chilled time in a funky place. Loved it!!

 excellent food and atmosphere
had a great meal. portions were of good size and quality excellent. staff ver helpful and friendly. the only dmaper was the service charge for parties of six or more. I was there with my family, we all had 3 courses but had to pay a twenty pound service charge, which we found steep and put us off going back for other family celebrations.

wow thats an old picture, doesn't look like that now, now a lot more Rock orientated, ie pictures of bands etc on walls and a very Metal/Punk jukebox, bar staff all friendly, no food and drink a tad on the expensive side. George (who's in the picture) still pops in occasionally too!!

 IDEAL first date location
I met Paul in a shop on the Royal Mile, and two days later we met for a date at the Guildford Arms in Edinburgh. We had a wonderful time, chatting late into the night. I didn't know it then, but it was a fateful meeting place for me. We will be married on May 21, 2005: a little over three years from our first date over a pint or two of Jack the Lad

 Fantastic
We went to Mood last summer (August 2004) when we were in Edinburgh for a hen weekend - It was fantastic - We had VIP Entry - The Manager was very friendly as were the staff and we were allowed a stripogram into the VIP Room - The music was great and the atmosphere was also fantastic! So any hens out there get down to Mood if u are looking for a great night out. Thanks - Girls from Belfast.

Q-Bar
 Setting the record straight.
We at Q-Bar have read the following comments and feel that we should set the record straight concerning our doorstaff situation!! The dorrstaff involved in the Racial incident and all previous incidents are no longer employed at Qbar. The thoughts and actions of the doormen in question DO NOT reflect the policies of the Management team.We can only apologise for their actions and ensure that these incidents will never be repeated. We have new doorstaff employed now to bring the bar back to the fun, lively atmosphere that youi can only find in Q-Bar. Do not let the opinions of one set of men cast a shadow on what is a welcoming Bar to all.
We are proud of the fact that we have one of the largest spectrum of regular clientele in Edinburgh and plan on keeping it that way.Thank you for your time.
Q-Bar.

 Unfriendly, unwelcoming
A traditional pub with fine ales, let down by the extremely unfriendly landlord. A real shame as otherwise it could be a good venue for a pint or two.

 Absolutly fabolous!
The nicest looking pub I´ve ever been in apart from The Crown in Belfast.
About ten real ales to choose from, good whisky selection.
The interior is the real stunner though with a ceiling having to be seen to be believed, a nice wooden bar and lots of frosted glass.
Good mix of punters and friendly service.
Superb!

 Outstanding!
Landlord has a face as long as the famous road this pub sits on. Other than that this is one of Edinburgh's finer establishments. Friendly staff, barman particularly congenial. Ten out of ten for the Deuchars and range of malts. Sambuca particularly enjoyed in here by one or two of the more exotic locals!

 Enjoyable
Very enjoyable bar, staff extremly attentive and caring. The selection of beer was not the best but was made up by the wide selection of whiskey. Great food, great fun.

Busy bar - difficult tio get served. Big tables for large groups - beer expensive and of variable quality. Theatre trade keeps the place going - great promise fauls to deliver.

 Splendid.....
The barman is legendary, the Deuchars excellent and there is a total absence of piped music, which these days is both a blessing and a rarity. My only issue is with the name, which smacks of privilege, wealth and complete dislocation from the real world - not unlike that choir who end up there every Thursday night.

 A great Pub!
This is the finest pub in Edinburgh - with the possible exception of the Windsor Buffet. The beer is unrivalled in the city - great for viewing sport. Mitch & Mike are a great duo who know their beer - it's the tops!

 Ale paradise
You are spoilt for choice here. There is an ever changing range of real ales here.

There exist a real dutch pub in Amsterdam which has an even larger choice of beers from Germany, Belgium, Holland and Britain: In de Wildeman

Why I mention this? The Guildford is in Edinburgh's the place to taste Real ales from Scotland, England and Wales.

 Full Scottish Breakfast
This is a one-roomed pub with a very high ceiling and an eating area up the steps to one side on the left. They serve a typical range of keg beers and malts; We managed to get an inexpensive and hearty 'Full Scottish' breakfast, and enjoyed it with a pint of Guinness.
