 My Edinburgh local
The Scotsman lounge has been my Edinburgh local for a couple of decades . I visit Scotland every 18 months or sonfrom Tasmania & my first & last stop is the Scotsmans Lounge on every trip for a pint or 2 listening to fine singers especially Doogi Rush. Great welcoming staff & a true local pub in the heart of the Royal Mile. Awesome sessions & treasured memories. Thankyou!

 Rude staff on night out
While out listening to music in a Grassmarket bar last night, I ran into the staff of Dropkick Murphys on a staff night out. One man, who I was told was the bar owner, tried to get me to dance, and when I wasn't interested, attempted to forcibly pull me up. Then, apparently unable to understand that I didn't want him anywhere near me, he continued to harass us, putting his feet up on our table and sticking his finger in my ear. Meanwhile, one of the other Dropkicks staff was hassling the musician, licking him and sticking his tongue in his ear despite repeated requests to stop – had the singer been female, this would certainly have been seen as sexual assault. In the end, we had to request that this guy be removed from the bar.
To their credit, most of the staff were just drunk and having fun, and several did apologise on behalf of their less pleasant colleagues. Nonetheless, while none of this happened in Dropkick Murphys itself, I'm certainly not going to return to a bar where the owner harasses and manhandles women and allows his staff to intimidate and inappropriately touch staff in another bar.

Bars members of our military in Full Dress Uniform, but happily spends its profits that it makes while being defended by these same men and women. Lock on toilets is surreal. You spend over £3 for a pint but have to ask to spend a penny ? However, pub is a good navigational aid to head off to 'The Wash which is a decent pub with nice friendly approachable staff

We had a fantastic time and meal here. The staff were just so friendly the banter was great. Well done to the the two lassies who were run off their feet but smiled all the time especially the one from Aberdeen via America!!

Visited Filling Station on Friday 5th October 2012 and be warned... Ordered a pint of Tennants Lager and a 250ml glass of wine and was flabergasted to find the price was £10.80 !!!! (Live locally in Edinburgh)

£3.80 for the pint, fair enuf .....

But wait for it £7.00, Yip £7.00 for a glass of average pinot gricio......

Rip off Britain or what... what do tourists think if visiting Edinburgh...

I suggest the bottle would not cost that amount...

Hand your heads in shame Filling Station... Be Warned :(

 Knowledgeable staff and a ghost?
My mate and I enjoyed a couple of good ales in here. A female bar member was very knowledgeable and gave advice on the ales and types. I also had a strange experience when sitting on a stool I felt something nudge at my left leg quite strongly. I looked down expecting to see a dog and there was nothing there. There was nobody anywhere near to me either. I was quite sober and quite surprised!

 Tartan wearers beware!
Think twice about visiting this pub if your dressed in tartan as you'll not be welcome. We were on a hen night dressed in full tartan(kits etc) and refused entry as we were told by an abrupt doorman that they didn't let fancy dress in! First time I've heard of tartan being fancy dress especially in Scotland and from an irish pub!

 What a pleasure
On holiday up here from London
the Fiddlers is a really nice pub that makes visitors most welcome (unlike a lot of the Scottish pubs)
It has real olde worlde feel to the place and the landlord kept filing our glass up with free whisky
cant wait to reccomend this pub to all my friends.

 Great Place
On a one day visit to Edinburgh (not nearly enough by the way) we were lucky enough to find the Deacon Brodie Pub. had lunch and a few beers.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. Let me taste the various beers so I order one I knew I would enjoy. Ian was fantastic, and talked us into trying Haggis, which was delicious! Can't say enough about how welcoming the people were.

It would be my everyday pub if I wasn't in the US instead of Edinburgh!

just got back from the filling station with my wife. while the staff were nice and friendly and my wifes food and drink order were fine, I was brought the wrong drink and the wrong food. after sending it back and getting the right order delivered I tucked into what looked like a good burger and found to my horror that only the outside of the burger had been cooked and the inside was still bloody, raw and cold. Never again will I return.

I was in here when it first opened and i left with no high opinion of this place, however i decided to give it another try on Saturday the 21st and what an improvement. The atmosphere in the place was brilliant and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. A really enjoyable evening and will def be back if they continue this improvement. No dust in sight...

I often go to the filling station for drinks, my husband and i wanted some breakfast so we called in for a bite to eat. We were shown to a seat then we waited... waited... waited,,, and then a waitress came to our table and asked what would we like, we then ordered our breakfast and waited... waited again for around half an hr before we got the breakfast. I am know the filling station is buzy but a half hr is a long time to wait. One thing i can say is that the prices are not to bad, it's only if you order a drink it gets expensive

 Worst meal in Edinburgh
I visited the Filling Station with my husband and 10 year old son on Tuesday 27th December 2011. The girl on the desk was very nice and we were seated after a short wait. However all downhill from there. Place was busy but plainly hugely understaffed. We were on the upper floor but I only saw one waitress for what is quite a big restaurant. There was another young male waiter but I only saw him wander vagely back and forth a couple of times and did not appear to be taking orders or serving. We were offered the lunch menu which goes up till 5pm and appeared to be very good value. I think 2 courses were £7.95. It took a wee while for our orders to be taken and then five minutes later the waitress cames back and said that she had't written our drinks down and what were they? It took another 10 minutes for them to arrive. My husband and I both ordered potato skins and fish and chips. My son ordered a pizza. The potato skins when they arrived were poor quality and barely lukewarm. However, it took another 45 minutes for our mains to arrive. At this point we had been in the restaurant for over an hour and my son had not yet had anything to eat! The waitress dumped the plates and walked away. My husband took one look at his and declared he wan not eating it! the fish was clearly overcooked to being almost burnt. I tasted mine and the chips were almost cold and were obviously not freshly cooked. The fish was dried out and tasteless and resembled those cheap fillets you can buy in Iceland. My son liked his pizza. We complained to the girl on the desk, paid for our drinks and pizza and left. DO NOT GO HERE. IT IS AWFUL.

I was in this bar last Friday,to my surprise it has been taken over, and is in a dreadful state of affairs.it was around 11pm there was about 10 people in,from what I remember it was black Friday, grassmarket bar, heaving, black bull, heaving, perhaps if they gave this bar a deep clean, people might return.MAYBES!! It's dirty, and I mean dirty, the tables were sticky, sauces all over the tables, the paper covering the bar is falling off.side omg,I felt like I had ocd,and wanted to clean it up,and take the fuckn mobile fone of the barman, how rude. To sum this place up,I say get the new owners out,out,out..bring back the old ones..shocking!! Minging!! Empty!! Dirty!! Untidy!!grimebusters needed, environmental health, need to close this filthy bar down.

Got a lot 2 say about this em pub?? It's a hovel, what a messy dusty hole.
It was very very quiet when I was there on sat night, there was a doorman on,why? He was okay, welcoming and friendly which is more than I can say about the staff. Had a wee look at the other comments on here and I have to agree with the majority its shit now,and I especially agree with one comment a while back i/we reckon the positive comments are made up by staff and family. It's such a shame was a clean tidy bar with good food and service, and was busy every weekend no matter what time you went in. Oh one more thing to add fiddlers could you put any more seats in? Then there could be even less room. This pub? Is honestly the worst I have ever been in. Oh sorry one more thing to say DON'T GO IN, IT'S A SHIT (pub?) PLACE. Sorry again another comment why is there not a minus button on ratings this place needs it.

I work backwards and forwards in Edinburgh. Was in this bar when it was a dull depressing hole called Bar Alba and vowed never to go back again. Went back in last week when I was back over drawn in by the fiddling music and had a night of mighty Craic. The pub is a weird sort of Irish Scottish shabby chic mash up which bizzarly works. Didn't have food so can't comment but loved the place staff were brilliant. Good job. Would go back

 On the Fringe
My Mrs and I dropped in on the 1st day of the fringe, sat down for a couple of drinks which were on the expensive side, then decided to grab a bite to eat, i had the meatball calzone side order of onion rings and she had the American club sandwich, our waitress dispite it being very busy was attentive and polite the meal was spot-on and i even though i have a big appetite i couldn't finish which was a nice change. I would definitely call in again, if the drinks were cheaper i would call frequently and give and extra point to rating.

 Really bad
Me and my girlfriend walked in last night to the Filling station on he royal mile wed 10th aug, we had to wait 15minutes for a table so had adrink in the bar, which was ok. We then got our table and decided to order the Full rack of ribs, when they arrived was 9 cut up small ribs in small bowl with half cooked small bowl of chips and 3 small tubs of sauce. I was disgusted with the 9 small ribs in the bowl that i asked to speak to the Manager on duty. I was told him that i was disgusted with the portion for £16 for the meal that was in front of me, which he agreed was terrible and said would discount the meal to half price and was having discussions withe the managers regarding the ribs. The meal was ruined with the whole ambience, we ate few of the ribs and asked for the bill and walked out. I would not recommend the Filling station for food ruined our night.

not the best place to eat in edinburgh
arrived at the filling station at around 2pm today. as it was busy i asked how long we would have to wait on atable for 2. was told that there was a 5-10 min wait so myself and my son decided to wait. After we waited for 20mins my son went and asked how long we were still going to wait and was told that the buzzer to let us know when our table was ready had not been registered so we were actually never going to get a table. We were then given the next available table. We ordered our dirinks,a diet coke for myself and an irn-bru ice cream float for my son, after a wait the drinks arrived my diet coke and an irn bru for my son, this was returned as it is not what he ordered. We then ordered our food. an all day breakfast for him and a hot dog for myself. they arrived in ok time as the resteraunt was busy but the allday breakfast was missing the link sausage, we told this to our waitress who came back with a sausage on a seperate plate and left. after a short time the waitress came and asked if everything was ok, it wasnt the breakfast should have also had potate scones with it that were also missing, she then informed us that they had run out and only had hash browns and askd if he would like one, this is half way through our meal. Surley this should have been mentioned at time of ordering as he would have ordered something different. I would like to say that i have been the this place before and received good service but after today i would only return if i really had to and as there are plenty of great places to eat in edinburgh that dont cost as much it is highly unlikley that i will go back. still waiting on an apology

 Overrated, overpriced and poor quality
My partner and I popped into the filling station for lunch as the menu looked quite nice and the price was a bit over average so we figured it must be quality food.
We sat down at our table and our waitress introduced herself and continued to take our drink order, she then went on to ask if we would like to start with garlic bread with cheese to which I replied no thank you, she then proceeded to ask again if I was sure she couldn't temp me to order, this annoyed me slightly as I'd don't want to have to come into a restaurant and be
We wanted some comfort food so ordered chilli nachos and macaroni cheese with Chips and battered mushroom to share.
The macaroni dish was described on the menu as being creamy macaroni with cheese onto, out into the over till bubbling and when it arrived it looked very plain with hardly any 'creamy sauce' no cheese on top and there were actual pieces of pasta with no sauce on at all. The sauce that was there tasted like powered cheese and it was horrible.
The chilli nachos had about 2 tablespoons of chilli if you were lucky and this was basically all kindness beans and tasteless. There was big raw chunks of green chilli not jalapeños and there was only cheese covering 2 of the nachos!
The battered mushroom although nice were too greasy and when I took a bite the grease was everywhere!
We couldn't every eat the dishes and pushed the plates to the side, not once did the waitress come over and ask if everything was okay and when I asked for the bill she was silent and did not let on or ask how our meal was! I do not understand how this place can charge these prices and serve such poor quality food. I have made sure my review is on every single site as people do not have money to waste and there are so many nice places in Edinburgh that serve decent quality food for reasonable prices! I will never be back!
I also want to say that, this location will pull alot of tourists and the filling station should be ashamed of producing such poor quality! This is a an insult to Edinburgh!

 Missed opportunity
It is Joel again. Traveling from Seattle I was hoping to enjoy a few pints at your pub and should have called first.
I recognize your awarded nature so I am not bagging your place.
Sounded lovely but it was not meant to be.
Best is luck!

 False advertising!
I read the website and it currently says 11am is your opening but I am standing here sweating from getting here at door open only to find you led me to an unhappy end!
Change the site info as I am not happy about this.

This pub has recently been taken over, would rather it had not. What a mess they have made,it was a good pub,now its like going to the museum,or a car boot. Shame on you fiddlers, alba wins.

loved the atmosphere and although it may not seem a place for breakfast, they have the best Scottish breakfast ever! a bit confused about the service at first (didnt realize we had to go up to the bar to order), but very accommodating and nice.

 poor service
The staff in the restaurant unfriendly and unwelcoming. When I asked for a table, I was ordered to Wait 2 minutes While I appreciate the need to employ foreign staff, I expect at the very least courteous service. The food was deplorable and had to be sent back. I had a foreign visitor and he was not impressed. This usd to be a great restaurant. Customer Service is very important -the manager needs to get on top of this now!!

Very disappointing and expensive - £9.95 for a burger meal. Quality poor. Chips soggy and fatty. No salad (one slice of tomato and a few limp pieces of rocket). Tiny tub of coleslaw.Shabby. Edinburgh residents and tourists deserve better! On the Royal Mile too!
Sunday, May 22, 2011Rating: No rosettes

I liked Bar Alba but now the Fiddlers Rest is terrible! We waited forty minutes for oven fish and chips, the sachets of salad crem were off and the waitress went to the local Sainsburys to buy lettuce for our meal!
Not what I expect from the capital and not a good show for the tourists.

Great pub in the center of town, with one of the finest selections of whiskies, ales and bottled beers. Can be quiet which is great if you need an escape, and can fill up quickly at night when you meet loads of interestng people. As for comments about the staff, i find them very helpful and friendly. i have witnessd them refuse service (rightly so), but they are proper bar staff that don't take crap, i was impressed how patient the young man was with the insults he got for doing his job on my last visit

 Poor service
There may be a small selection of good ales but this is small compensation for attitude of the bar staff and the lack of any atmosphere. I'd walk a little further to the Blue Blazer or Thomson's if you want a great ale pub.

 Lost it's way
I don't know what has happened t this little gem recently. The bar staff are quite the rudest people I've had the misfortune to meet. It's not like they have a monopoly in that part of town!

My advice give it a miss until the staff learn the meaning of Scottish Hospitality.

 Horrible treatment from 'Manageress'
We went into this pub and asked the lady behind the bar what beers she had- she listed off a very impressive amount of beers so unknowingly we said 'but what about on draft?' and she said 'THAT IS DRAFT' in the rudest tone. So we ordered a Stella and she gave it to my husband. I then asked if she had red wine and she said yes I asked whether they were small bottles or big ones and found out that they had large ones only so being a very frequent wine drinker i asked if they had been opened long as wine tends to go off if it is left open for a day or so, She said 'WINE DOES NOT GO OFF AND HOW WOULD I KNOW HOW OLD THEY ARE SINCE I JUST GOT HERE AN HOUR AGO!' I said well can I try one - She said NO! WE DONT DO SAMPLES' I asked if I bought some wine and it had turned could i get it changed and she said NO! So I just said ok I will take a glass of Rioja thanks. SHE THEN PROCEEDED TO SNAP THE GLASS OF BEER OFF MY HUSBAND AND TELL US THAT WE HAD A PROBLEM AND THAT WE NEEDED TO LEAVE! I COULDNT BELIEVE IT. SHE CAME AROUND THE BAR AND STARTED TO PUSH MY HUSBAND OUT OF THE PUB - PHYSICALLY - HE WAS NOT HAPPY THAT SHE WAS TOUCHING HIM SO HE SAID SO - SHE PUSHED US TOWARDS THE DOOR AND TOLD US TO GET OUT. We asked to speak to the manager and she said she was the manager(not sure if I believe that) She would not tell us her name either!! I have never been so disprepected in my life. We had come to Edinburgh for the Rugby International between Scotland and Ireland and had been having a great time exploring Edinburgh. This totally put a dampner on our holiday and I am going to write to the company personally. I would NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE !

Like a plastic surgery-enhanced famous actress, this one's appealing from the outside, but that's exactly where you should leave it The clientele becomes severely annoying after 10 minutes or so, so make sure you have no sharp implements to hand.

I am coming to the conclusion that there is an evil scientist at work in this city. He sits in his deep underground lair beneath the city streets cloning crap pubs. yet another pub re-incarnated as a bland hell-hole aimed at students, Standard mark one pub interior is astonishing only because it is quite so unremarkable. When I visited there was no main course from the set lunch menu that I fancied but despite the a la carte and tasting menus not being offered at that service, new ones were being introduced that evening, they were more than happy to offer me alternatives. Well kept ales, a good selection of wines and spirits in a lovely setting, a pub of great character. Mesmerized by it’s charm I was almost forced to put on my artist hat, erect my easel and open up my paint box.  Stunning Bar
Recommended for families, especially on a saturday night. The atmosphere is so ambient, the staff incredibly warm and welcoming. The kind of pub where they remember your name even after just a couple of visits. A mixed clientelle old and young who cant be faulted in any way adds to the joy and pleasure of a visit. Also situated in one of the best streets in Edinburgh, the cowgate, a hidden gem in the old town. Take a late night romantic stroll after and enloy the outstanding architecture of the street after you've had one of the finest dining experiences Edinburgh can offer, the chef uses the freshest of Scottish ingredients, this really should have a michelin star. It even offers some rooms for a weekend away, you would think you where in the finest hotels in Paris or London. Cant recommend this place enough, incredibly good value for money, i dont know how they do it, it must be the pride the staff have in working there

I found the Irish barman to be very pleasant and witty, and also very entertaining - as he got up and sang a few throaty tunes with the performer of the night, Steve Lee. Maybe the previous blogger should release the wild bee from his bonnet and relax. The WHI provides a fantastic and tranquil environment to my friends and I every time we visit.

fantastic little pub, great food and service
Love coming here often for a bite to eat. Surprisingly large inside, it has been recently been taken over by new management who have much improved the site.
Good atmosphere- busy, but not so much so that its uncomfortable or too loud. Staff are very friendly and attentive.
The menu offers a range of inventive gourmet burgers (i love the chilli burger- which comes with jalapenos, chili cheese, sour cream and a rich spicy sauce), as well as salads and sides. The burgers are generous in size and presented nicely, on wooden boards with a pot of coleslaw and string fries. Deserts are lovely too- try the toffee sundae...if you any room left!!
Fantastic range of drinks, including many beer choices and cocktails for under a fiver. Wine is jokely listed under cheap, good and great - meaning there is various price ranges. The beer and burger deal for under a tenner should not be missed!h
Would definitely recommend a visit :)h

Good Food, Good Beer, Bad Service
The food is amazing, the beer is superb. However, I arrived at 11 am one time with my girlfriend, and the watress informed us that it had opened at 10:30. We asked to be served, and she treated us like we were a nuisance, and that she did not want us there. We were the first ones, but we did not feel like we deserved such open contempt. Ultimately a bar is a service industry. Although the resaurant is providing great food and great beer, the staff can ultimately take away from the experience and scare customers away.

 Never going back here!
Bafflingly rude service here last night.

At closing time, the bar manager took it upon herself to physically pull drinks out of people's hands, spilling wine everywhere. The bar staff kept serving drinks which the manager then proceed to take away from people minutes later, as she cleared the pub.

Add to that the prices, (charged £4.80 for a gin & tonic), I shan't be going back.

Not Any More Venturing Into This Bar
I Have frequented this bar on and off for yrs after coming over the short distance from Dalkeith
now residing in Edinburgh i have normally always called in as
i have found it to be a pleasant bar with pleasant clientele and bar staff

However one barman with long greasy hair and with an irish accent certainly has changed my point of view and the view of my friends from Edinburgh

as this man or boy should be aptly named has certainly not got a way with him in manners
in regards serving fellow customers
yes it gets busy at nights especially at wkends but this barman has been seen to be agressive in his manner towards people and has not got a way about him towards customers
and actually i think he has something against Scottish people in general and should not be allowed to work behind any bar
as he is very abrupt and agressive in his manner..certainly he has a twisted personality

I and all my friends wont go back to this bar only because of what we have witnessed with this man behind the bar

The others all were and have always been no problems and get on with their jobs and ok at it
but this bloke as mentioned from Ireland has no way about him for working at this type of work whatsoever

And the manager of this bar really if he doesnt want anymore customers to dissapear from venturing into his bar then he'd
be wise to get rid of this
very abrupt bloke before others follow out the door

Ive personally told my friends both male/female whom frequent this bar as i did
and they also are not going back
until this guy has been sent packing.

I visited dropkicks last week for the first time, and i will never ever be back. How this can be one of the best bars in Edinburgh is beyond me, the place was disgusting! I was met in the door by two rude security guards, then was hit by the overpowering smell of hundreds of sweaty drunks - not the most appealing thing in the world let me assure you. After ten minutes of trying to work my way through a huge scrum of shouting, jumping and in one case - fighting customers, I only just saw the bar and was met by the sight of two stressed barstaff, giving horrific service, some of the worst pints ive ever seen! So i left, and will never go back! People listen! There are much better places to go than this dive!

 Grumpy manager
Was out with a few pals and went to the bar and ordered a round for everyone. after the manager had poured a couple of drink a friend came up and said he wanted a coke mixer instead of a lemonade one. As she hadn't made this drink I didn't see the problem and asked if she could make this change. her reaction was to look at me asif i'd poured the drink over her head and said do you want to make up you mind in a aggresive tone. To which I replied im sorry but i dont like your tone.........if your not happy with my tone you and friends can leave!. Which is what we all did leaving 5 poured drinks which she had poured at the bar. Leaving for a gret night with no managers on a power trip coz they have a walkie talkie strapped to her 40 inch waist.

Well i got attacked in rush from 5 teenage girls for no reason, apart from the fact that i was apparently looking at them funny! The door steward kindly man handled me and threw me out into the street, being a 26 year old professional woman i have never been put out a bar in my life, in the process my £300 designer watch and my £500 Gucci bag got stolen along with all my money and credit cards and not one member of staff offered me help or called the police. Apparently all people who are 'involved' in a fight get removed from the premises, me being one of them!? much to my partners delight he had to come and collect me from town to take me home to clean up my burst lip and bloody nose. Not a bar i would recommend in a hurry.

 Awesome pub
Visited the UK in November 2007. Must have visited 30 pubs over the course of 10 days, some of which are famous. Without a doubt, the Scotsmans' Lounge is the one I remember the best. We were heading back to the hotel after a day of sightseeing, but as soon as we heard the music coming out of this place, we had to stop for a drink (turned into many). What we found was an incredible little pub with great music, great drink, a party-filled atmosphere and friendly staff. That one drink turned into many. Wish we had places like this in Canada.

The service was terrible, took an hour to served, food was terrible. One meal had to be sent back, as it was not well done as asked for. when it eventually came back, it was no better and the fried eggs on top were burnt black. needless to say we did not pay for it.
On leaving we wrote a comment in the book, but say the waiter tear the page out.

This is the best pub in the world MATE
Before our good mate Brian (Edinburgh local) took us to this pub he told us it was the best pub in Edinburgh by the time we were where leaving after our 3 days stay we told him he was wrong and said This is the best pub in the world MATE. At first we taught we'd just have one but we where soon lured in by the magical atmosphere within. Our first night here there was a great duo of a fiddler and a guitarist. They played traditional Irish and Scottish music and all my mates sang along, what a pub mate. The drink was so cheap but the ice cubes must have been expensive because they where very tight when it came to giving them out! :) We all left the pub well oiled that night for little or no money! The next day we went to another pub but no1 could settle because we where all very excited of going back to The Scotmans Lounge we had heard that there was a different band on this night and that they where brillant. When we got back to it we cud hardly get in the door but everyone inside squeezed in as they always do in this pub to accomodate people. Great pub mate When we got inside we where not let down by the band, there was a wee scottish man but he was no ordinary scottish man he was a chinese scottish man! Probably one of the most talented Chinese Scottish men I have ever seen. His partner played some sort of a music instrument but I don't no the name of it, it was like a bag or sack with pipes coming out of it and was very loud. My friend Enda liked the band so much he recorded them on his camera phone and we have watched them every day since. Another magical night was had by us all in this hidden gem and again we left with plenty of money and a deep since of belonging and love for what we now describe as The Best Pub In The World. We meet many of the regulars and the staff were very nice. The one down side I have of this pub and I am clutching at straws here is perhaps the toilets could be closer to the band or maybe equiped with speakers so you won'tt have to miss hearing the band. On our last day we went back for one last drink and a few snaps and we joked with the barman that we would be interested in opening up The Scotmans Lounge in our own home town and had he ever taught of franchising it out! I don't think he took us serious but you never know.I am already planning my next trip back to what we now call The Greatest Pub in the World Mate

My Favorite Pub in all of Scotland
I found this tiny Pub 2 years ago on holiday in Scotland. I returned several times to take John's guided malt tours and learn from his expertise. The food is exceptional and almost magically appears from a kitchen no larger than a broom closet. I am going back next week (June 2009) I am excited to see John and Christine and learn more of the history of Scotch as only John can relate it through illustrated examples.

Remember being grabbed by the bouncers in there in 2002, dragged out, thrown to the ground, needind 10 stitches in my head, and all for? I still have no idea to this day!!!

This happened pretty soon after a punter died through the negligence of the animal bouncers.

Don't know if it's any better now, I do hope so, the door staff were bang out of order.

 A new lease of life
Around Nov 2008, the old landlord/manager left/was replaced, by a younger forward thinking management. A new range of beers, with reduction in prices and proper waiter service and a new menu. Real bar-flys mix with tourists. A proper pub.

i was on a hen night on Sunday 4th January and our group ended up in this pub. It was a great night, great music playing however at the end of the night one particular bar staff managed to ruin the whole night. We were just putting on our coats to leave and a staff member (refused to give his name, fat brown curly hair) came over to us as we were leaving and shouted at all of us just to fuck out of the pub and said this in a very nasty manner. We said to him that we were just leaving and again he repeated the same and was very aggressive towards everyone who had been in great form. i felt that i could not leave the matter as he had been so rude and asked to speak to the manager who came over to us, again refused to give us his name. This manager refused to believe what we told him about his staff and stated to leav. At this point the ignorant barman started to make faces at us and laughed and then the man that stated that he was a the manager, really was not the manager and refused to get the manager for us. We had a great night out but unfortunately the staff ruined the night for us by the way it ended. The music was good but due to the staffs attitude would never return to this pub again.

Got short-changed there. Knew it had happened instantly, but barman refused to correct it or even discuss the matter. My advice would be DON'T GO!!!!

was at Deacons on Saturday 15th November, the South African rugby was on, there was one waiter and two girls, they were very busy, and exceptionally pleasant to everyone, the food was gorgeous, i would certainly go there the next time i'm in Edinburgh and would recommend to my friends when i go home.

 Don't go there
We went to Deacon Brodies on the 26 October 2008, I had the Steak Pie with Roast pots and veg. Disgusting mess, the pie looked like it had been kept warm for too long, and the pastry (if you could call it that) was black and had dried up edges, when first delivered I thought it was just gravy which was making it look dark 'til I looked closer, the 'steak' very little and one piece was just fact, the pots were nice (surprisingly) but the vegetables were overcooked. We tried to call a waitress over but they were too busy, and no one came to us to ask if everything was OK, until when the plates needed collecting, then when I told her it was unsatisfactory, she just reported it to the management, no apology, nothing at all, end of .... Altogether it was an apalling meal.

Great pub you guys!

Go see it, the food is very nice, neither is it to expensive, since it is placed (JUST!) 2 minutes walk from the Royal Mile....

Went in there after visiting Athurs Seat, just to have a pint, but me and 6 other friends got kind of stuck there .. For 7 full hours or more !

Great time!

 Surprise Visit
My wife and myself was on tour from South Africa on the 22nd August 2008. We walked the streets of the old town and at lunch time we entered your tavern. We got the surprise of our lives at the beauty of the tavern. The service was good, the food was good and then it started to rain outside and within minutes the tavern was pack and everyone was chatting away, from spanish to us speaking in Afrikaans our home language. The manager/owner was running around serving the clients. Hey man was it one of the coolest pub we visited. Long live Deacon Brodie.

I wasn't sure if it still existed but I recently met someone from Scotland and they told me that the Pub still existed. I still think about my time in Scotland all the time and hope to get back to the Pub one day. I live in New Zealand

 Great pick...
Had the opportunity to be in Edinburgh for 3 days in '07 and spent quite a few hours at Hebrides. There was this amazing pear beer (heavy stuff, high in alcohol content) that I'd never had before and haven't had since. Delicious. The better whiskeys are well worth the price of a shot. Leave you feeling nice and toasty. The locals at the bar are amazingly friendly, even to the yanks. I'd be back there in a minute if I could get there.

 A wonderfull traditional pub
Visited the Tolbooth on Thursday 14th December with my office party, had never been in before, what a hidden gem. The guys really know how to keep their beer and very pleasant, efficient service. A bit of a walk down the Royal Mile, but well worth the effort

 quaint & very friendly
I was in Deacon Brodies at the beginning of December with my grandchildren, we were upstairs in the restaurant, where the staff do a great job and were very friendly, especially to the boys. The food was excellent, I had the salmon and prawn salad, beautiful, my husband had the steak pie, home made scrummy. Deacons is well worth a visit when you are in Edinburgh.

Shane, the sexy Irish bartender in question, was last seen in New York, NY. This is truly a great loss for Britain. I hear that on his travels he was seen raping and pilaging in Seattle, before moving his conquests to NY. His era, the class of 2004 Deacons staff, will not be outdone. Truly they were the life of the Deacon. Since thier departure, it is as if the very soul has been ripped out of Deacon Brodies. RIP. Keep crowning them bottles, Hey Jude.

For anyone that has not been in Siglo for the last 6 months I would recommend that they should pop in to have a look at the place after the refurb and the new management changes. Trying to shed it's old, less than savoury image, Siglo is now a genuinly decent venue catering for everyone and anyone. Over two floors, you have the choice to either chill in the Burlesque themed bar downstairs or dance in the club upstairs, which, depending on which night you go on, plays anything from funky house, indie, dance or cheese from a selection of established edinburghs DJs. While not recently seen as a venue for the 'cool kids' changes are afoot and Siglo, I believe is becoming an important and and soon to be reconised addition to Edinburghs nightlife.

 Best Pizza in U.K.
I'm a pizza connoisseur from the states, and the pizza at the Filling Station made a rainy day in Edinburgh into a fantastic experience. The crust was tasty with a nice texture, the sauce was perfect, and the pepperoni had just enough kick to make me never forget that pizza! It ranks in my top five anywhere I've ever been.

I was really disappointed At 2 o'clock in the afternoon I wanted a quick refresh before continuing the royal mile atmosphere BUT no Children allowed even sitting at a table. Why was this not advertised at the door- embarassing and frustrating being chucked out and not even a drunk insight. The bar man was no help and could not even give me his head office address.

 Obnoxious people moan too much
I visited the comedy club on a number of occassions, and always appreciated how friendly comedy club staff were. On one visit, the comedy manager went out of her way to provide my friend (who was on crutches) with a decent seat. The comedy was great and we were really enjoying ourselves until a rowdy group started talking loudly, ruining the show for everyone else (and at £10 a ticket, you want to hear the comedians, not the drunk, rude idiots). It was only the comedy manager who had the nerve to approach the rowdy bunch who was ruining it for everyone and asked them to be quiet. Perhaps, as mentioned below, it is how YOU act that determines how you are treated.

Lovely friendly pub. Staff were all friendly and helpful. Food was wonderful and very large quantities. Good selection of drinks especially cocktails. Good honest prices too!! Booths were nicely private, if a little eerie with the skulls but this all added ambience to the experience. Well done all!!!

 The management is a disgrace
I have been here twice and on both occassions the Comedy Manager (as she calls herself, though she seems to act more like a fun monitor) was rude and aggressive. I agree that some of the staff are shocking. And the posts on here from them say it all.

You work in the service industry, where you have every right to be treated with respect, but when you display attitudes, as you do on posts here (Get over it shows the problem rather well) and in the bar, its little wonder you annoy so many people. Believe it or not, most people go to pubs to have a good time, they don't set out with the determination to upset you. Perhaps you should consider other jobs more suited to your personalities.

I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone until the staff learn to be more courteous.

That said, if you do decide to go there, don't set fire to plastic glasses. The staff here already have contempt for their customers, you don't need to give them reasons to think you're a muppet.

David please get the facts straight
Im pretty appalled and humored by Davids response to the Glenmorangie experience he suffered, i am the barman in question, i think what David is forgetting is that i was explaining to some tourists which Whisky i think was the best and how to drink it, Glenmorangie being my choice of malt, it is very sad that this gentleman would take great offence that i may have pronounced this wonderfull drink in such a manner, isnt the point being that i do have the knowledge of the product and that i was doing my very best at promoting the product too, which i am very very sure the tourists thoroughly enjoyed, i suspect they were secretly enjoying the interference from Davidwho was a little Ott in my book too!!!!

 Get Over It
Staff react to customers. If you walk in off the street and act rudely, staff will react rudely back. Why not? Why should rude people be tolerated? If however you are polite and reasonable you will be treated thus. It is very simple. We would not walk into your work and give you a hard time. Don't do it to us.

someone who used logic
do not be rude to staff as they only work under management instructions and follow a protocol which is normally well thought out and often rests on a fine line between customer satisfaction and staff health and safety, and do not be stupid enough to start an arguement when the establishment is known to employ bouncers-even if they are well mannered and polite like in this case--the best way is by not getting drunk enough to forget they greeted you on the door-unless you have reached a state where no bouncer looks big enough and no bar staff looks worthy of respect

The pub at the top of the mound
My wife and a friend of mine from San Fransisco went up here to relax and listen to Graeme E. Pearson. Just before Christmas. He did not dissapoint. Well worth the addmission charge - Free. I'm going to bring my Mother-in-Law next time. Great atmosphere and a fine meal too.

 black bull
On the 28th of December my mother, father and myself decided to go for a pub lunch in the Black Bull, Grassmarket Edinburgh. We sat down ordered our food and drinks however after waiting over an hour my father decided to ask what was going on. To my absolute disgust, the barmaid called my father a b*****d threw my dads money at him and told him, in her exact words ' Go to hell!!' I can honestly say I have never been so appaulingly treated in all my life. This kind of treatment is an absolute disgrace and should be brought to the attention of others! The person whom I am talking about claimed to be the manager!

 Best Bar in Edinburgh
What can I say about Rush, well the staff are the freindliest in the world, booze is cheap at £1 for most pints and a few spirits and bottles. Music - Thursday's is Hip Hop, Friday's is Dance ,House, Funk and Saturday's (the best night for music in Rush) Everthing from Rock, dance, hip hop, cheese everthing. Big up to bar staff

You never know where you are with this place-the music is never the same. Which is great as everyone will fit in here, well that is if it’s not to busy! Incredible for prices and a really smashing atmosphere! I would recommend everyone comes here as it shows the true sense of a student night out!

We went to the Filling station on Rose St, Edinburgh with our 1 year old little boy and despite the food being served on the lower floor everyone was helpful in getting the buggy downstairs and the waitress was extremely helpful and polite and even refilled the little ones cup with squash. Fantastic food that arrived in great time, i enjoyed the entire experience, only wish i could have stayed for cocktails at the bar as it looked intriguing! Baby fell asleep before his dinner arrived but we were offered fresh food when he awoke and a box to take away his leftovers in. If your looking for an outstanding restaurant that has great prices, fantastic service and a delicious menu, head to the filling station.

 Excellent Local Pub
I spent my first night in Edinburgh for over 20 years 2 nights ago, and was lucky enough to stumble on the Halfway House.
A 'real' pub, a million miles away from the Weatherspoons of the world.
Friendly staff, and a good crowd of locals & visitors for the fringe. Combined with specially selected beers from local brewerys (regularly changing for the fringe) and a reasonable selection of maits ensures my return on the next trip.

Most ignorant, undignified door and bar staff ever, thay have no respect for any of their customers, i have seen them manhandle so many people and roughly throw them outside, even saw one of their men hitting a girl. drink is far too expensive anyway, its filthy and everyone is so packed in its so uncomfortable. definitely a place to avoid.

 One to miss
Where to begin?
Terrible service from uninterestedm, rude staff - Thrash metal music on the Royal Mile not really sure that works as what few other customers were as baffled as us?
The place smelt awful a mix of stale beer and rotten grease. The open kitchen on view was untidy and looked unclean with all manner of staff trampling through it.
We will not go back and urge you to go to one of the other fine establishments on the Royal Mile.

 Sambuka or Sambuca?
1. What an affair. If the gentleman in question was so keen on lighting his sambuca* and considers himself an expert on the manner in which it is served should he not be able to spell it?

2. I think this point has been made before however i think it deserves repetition. Why on earth did the gentleman ( and i use the term loosely) not notice the glasses were plastic? Perhaps it could be considered that since he did not, he should accept the consequences. As such should he not also be made accountable for the cost of replacing the glasses?
Friday, July 29, 2005Rating: rosettes

 reply to the drunk
This is just a reply to the guy that burnt his hand on the plastic shot glass. Maybe if he wasn't so drunk he would have noticed that the shot glass was made from plastic. This customer then argued aggressively with two staff members and was asked to leave he then decided to pick up a glass bottle with the intention of hitting us with it. Now would anyone in there right mind want these type of people in their pub.

You see the thing is, if you ask for things with grace and manners, you receive what you want with equal grace and manners. If you are rude and obnoxious, why should you be treated with dignity? The customer is not always right. Case point.
Thursday, July 28, 2005Rating: rosettes

 Terrible service
I was in there last weekend for a night out with my fiancée, celebrating her birthday. after a few drinks I decided to order a round of Sambuka, of course the first thing everyone did when the Sambuka was delivered was to light it up, none of us had realised the staff had served it in PLASTIC GLASSES!!! one of the girls burned her hand pretty severely on the molten plastic.

I decided to go up to the bar and make a complaint, when I did, the reception I got was disgusting... I spoke to an Australian girl who blamed me for 'being so stupid' When I asked for a replacement drink in proper Sambuka glasses [ which was the least they could offer in this situation ] she threatened me with being thrown out, I replied don't be so ridiculous and she proceeded to radio to the bouncers who then removed me from the venue, I was disgusted, my fiancée followed me out, and the Australian girl stood there behind the bouncers looking all smug, like she was on some sort of power trip.

I am appalled by this and I wouldn't recommend this venue to anyone who is looking for a quality night out, or even a cheap one for that matter!

Lived in Edinburgh for 22 years and only visited this pub for first time last night. Don't think I'll be back. The beer is very expensive (nearly £3 a pint!),and the attitude of the guys behind the bar stinks! On the plus side they do allow you plenty drinking up time and are not being forced out the door like most city centre bars.

The music was ok but don't think I'll be back in a hurry.

 Enchanted by Rantum Scantum
On a planned visit to Ireland from the U.S.A, we landed in Scotland and decided to skip Ireland. Ended up at the Scotsman on the advice of the taxi driver. Even though I seldom drink, that night at the Scotsmant, listening to Rantum Scantum is one of the best memories of the trip. I listen to their CD every day in the car and play my fiddle along with it every chance I get. I never tire of Bobby's earthy voice and Eddy's heavenly fiddle music. If Eddy and Bobby ever tour the US and come to California, we will be there!

Dear bestpubs:-
In 2004 I had the joy of visiting the Halfway house--I got a warm welcome, a lovely bowl of cullen skink, a gentlemanly gift of a map of Scotland(which I still have) and good memories. Old-fashioned, cosy wee pub, with live music on every night. The big friendly face of the owner, John Murphy, can usually be spotted on busy nights, keeping a watchful eye over his establishment.  Good local pub
This is a great pub, a bit removed from the touristy trash further up the royal mile. Quite popular with students, and also with people from the media/political places at the bottom of the canongate after work on a friday. The large open-plan design isn't the best for intimacy, but is good for larger groups. There's also some pleasant sofas. The beer's great. There's occasionally some interesting live music downstairs.

 Tourists-avoid this place!
I remember going to this bar on several occasions in 1997-1998 and what a nice place it was, sitting on of the best spots in Edinburgh, one could sit at the window and enjoy fabulous views of the Castle and gardens. In December 04 I went back only to enter one of the worst bars in Edinburgh. Tacky pictures of food adorning the outside windows, a filthy smoke filled bar, the seats that offered that fab view have been removed and replaced by a pool table, bar staff were not only inflexible but ignorant and just plain scruffy - and lacked even the basics in appropiately handling customer complaints. This bar should be one of the best in Edinburgh its now one of the worst. Tourists - avoid this place there are loads of other fabulous bars around the city.

 Read on...
I live in South Manchester, a place not short of top-notch restaurants and bars, It was my first visit to Edinburgh and had been there only two days when by chance we decided to go here for a spot of lunch. First impressions were very good; the place was spotless and well-laid out and the staff were extremely helpful very efficient. I was immediately seated and drinks arrived in seconds, not minutes. After looking over the superb and wide-ranging choice on the menu I plumbed for the Fillet Steak with the Blue Cheese sauce with a side order of Garlic Bread with Cheese, followed up by warm pancakes with cream, ice-cream and chocolate sauce (greedy pig, yes I know!) and can I just say it was one of the best meals I have ever eaten. The girl who served me (Sarah I think her name was) was extremely polite and helpful, the food arrived quickly and was cooked to perfection. The décor and layout of the place was very interesting but relaxing at the same time and just added to the whole experience, which was nothing short of superb. I really enjoyed my time in Edinburgh, the Castle, the Scotts Monument, Mary Kings Close, the Camera Obcsura along with many (many, many!) bars all got a visit and were all excellent but it is a real tribute to the management and staff of this restaurant that the hour or two I spent here was the best part of the whole visit. If I could give more than 5 Rosettes I would! All I can say is a big thank you on a job superbly done to all at the Filling Station, and to anyone who is going to Edinburgh… EAT HERE!

music and drink good - food not!
Firstly...this is a good pub! the drink is reasonable, the entertainment was great (Graeme E Pearson), the atmosphere was friendly and the other drinkers too!

Great as long as you don't have to eat here - and if you are in the centre of Edinburgh you certainly shouldn't have to!

Im from Cork & spent the summer working in Edinburgh. Some might think it sad that I spent my entire time in an Irish bar but believe me lads, this place rocked! Was like a little piece of home! Only place wit Bud on tap and Tayto crisps! Ollie, manager from Tralee was sound - love ya babe! But Mickey, the boss - in Cork we would call him a LANGER!

 Whats happened.........???!!!
When bar:alba first opened, all refurbished,it was fab.Relaxing & comfortable for us young, single ladies to go.Whether for coffee or wine, this was ideal for 'me time'.However, its changed hands again & with its plasma's & so called 'jukebox',this is 1place my friends & I no longer frequent. Its turned into 'another of the Grassmarket Pubs' loosing all its unique identity. Not to mention the rude staff & thats just the manager......!!!!

Its like home away from home. I know people will be saying why, when irish people go away the first thing they look for an irish bar but this place kicks ass. friendly staff, even the bouncers. Big HI! to eoin from clare and the rest of them. I will be back.

Good bar for a bit of a boogy, just wear lots of layers cause it gets like a sauna!!

BTW, Magners was only lauched in Scotland this year and is still hard to come by. Finny's is one of the few places you can now find it.

 Ya shoulda known better!
As a very frequent patron I have come to appreciate the style and character of this pub. It's such a shame that they have management who cannot properly pronounce the name of one of the leading single malts and takes it as a personal affront when offered the benefit of the knowledge of someone qualified to comment! I had the sad misfortune to have to witness a senior staff member repeatedly misinform four tourists seeking knowledge of single malts. The person concerned insisted on calling GlenMORangie GlenmorANGie and sought to ridicule and patronise me in front of others when I pointed out, quietly and calmly, that it rhymes with Orangey when pronounced correctly. I explained that the stress is on the first vowel in Gaelic, that TV adverts correctly pronounce it, and that he would be likely to be far less politely corrected were he to pronounce it in his incorrect manner in its area of creation! Such a shame to have to witness such a travesty when this excellent hostelry figures so highly in Scottish and Edinburgh social culture! Surely professionals should have the knowledge and the good manners that this person so singularly lacked? Lest I be accused of sour grapes (or should it be sour barley?) I still recommended several tourists to the Deacon Brodie for lunch today - the day after our contretent! Did I mention that I studied onomastics (names) as an honours module for my MA, or that I have worked as a guide in the whisky industry, or that I was trained in presentation and retail sale of whisky, that I still work in tourism, or that I am a passionate fan of said Glenmorangie!!!

cheap beer, cheap vodka, is a very cheap place. Great for students, unfortunate about the stagnant smell however.

 Absolutely magic
Should you be looking for a peaceful place to sit and have a chat, you're not going to get it at Finnegan's Wake! You'll get a night of careless, great fun and with great music to match. Should you on Sundays, you'll catch The Roods who are most probably one of the most talented and eclectic group of musicians I've ever seen. But do be prepared to dance: before you know it, somebody's twirling you around or sticking a pint of guinness in your hand. Such a great atmosphere!

Great for a late night date! I think I'm their longest serving regular ('94), but hey - it's not too trendy, open v.late, great live music 7 nights & a good atmosphere. What more do you want? Loses a star for £3 Guiness though - Scott!!!

 No football colours
We consider ourselves regulars in this restaurant. We were asked to leave because my fiance had his football top on. The bouncers had already greeted us at the door, we had sat down at our table and were looking thru the menu when the bouncer approached us and asked us to leave because no football colours were allowed. We asked him to show us the sign which indicates this, he was unable as there is no such sign, it was the managers decision he said. Quite embarrassing being asked to leave a restaurant. Never go back.

 More beer to your elbow
The Halfway House, a little gem in the heart of Edinburgh. Things have changed a little since the last report was written. I called in last week and there are now 4 handpumps on the bar. Only 3 were in use at the time but the potential is there. Food has changed also. The blackboard menu is not extensive but it is quality, and the prices are very reasonable for the city centre. I can recommend the Cullen Skink, a creamy fish soup, tastes better than it sounds. To finish the evening I tried one of the nice range of malts.
This is a unique place. It doesn't offer a lot in the way of size but it is a haven for the person who doesn't want mass production. I will be back soon.

 Don't Go!!
This is the worst pub I have ever visited in every respect. The beer is poor - staff unbelievably unfriendly - the atmosphere hostile. A give-it-a-miss - definitely!

 A welcome change from Berties
It's actually clean now and the drinks taste how they should. They don't do cheap stuff anymore but it's a hundred times better. From an Irish point of view,it kicks Finnegan's ass!!

Best night I had in Edinburgh
Great Irish boozer. All Irish staff-Olly from Kerry is mental! Very relaxed surroundings. Never seen so many Irish people in one place! If you are in Edinburgh you have to try it.

 Real Irish atmosphere
Best Guinness outside of Ireland! Friendly staff from all over Ireland who can actually pour a pint properly! They even have Tayto crisps and red lemonade! Loads of Irish tunes were played, even when the band werent on.Move over Biddys and Finnegans!

Poor excuse for an Irish bar
Majority of staff aren't even Irish and know less about Ireland than George Bush! Where are the Irish products? Don't even have Magners. A few t-shirts and posters don't make an Irish bar!!

 An Embarassment for Edinburgh
The signs all over the place ('no tap water served', 'do not stand here' etc) and a combination lock on the toilets, makes this pub a classic example of the appaulling customer service approach that Scotland is trying desperately to live down. As a born and bred Edinburgh resident, my apologies go out to all our visitors who seek and deserve better options to spend their hard earned money. There's plenty other historical pubs nearby that are a better bet.

Prime example of Brewery Vandalism! Ruining a perfectly good, busy hostelry, frequented by locals, loved by visitors, and known all over the world! I am referring to the Fiddlers, not this up-market (allegedly) burger bar with (allegedly) designer beers! SAD!

RIP The Fiddlers!

Possibly the most fun, friendly bar in Edinburgh
This is definitely the most friendly, lively and laid back place in Edinburgh with a relaxed mixture of locals and tourists and a guaranteed atmoshphere almost every night of the week save perhaps mondays and tuesdays. The draft beer, however, is a big disappointment - lukewarm and tasteless - I recommend you drink the malt whisky or bottled beer!

Hey! My stepfather Dave works there! He's a smashing guy, you're always guaranteed a 'guid blither'! Quiet though....nice place to seek refuge with a newspaper and a relaxing pint.

 What a pub!!!
It's obviously been a while since your reviewer has been into this little treasure! No television, no bright flashy fruit machine, live folk music five nights a week, it has to be one of the undicovered pub gems of Edinburgh. Everyone should go...go now in fact!
