 1st July 2014
My wife and I visited today,so we could enjoy a leisurely lunch together, what a disappointment,we entered the premises at approx 12.15pm,there were only 4 people seated for lunch,a waitress said she would be with us in a minute,we stood at the bar,no bar staff,we continued to wait,my wife then went to toilet,on her return I was still waiting.the waitress reappeared ,ignored me and went attend the seated guests, how appalling ,and so embarrassing.what a way to treat customers, no social skills and obviously not a people's person such a shame when there are so many people looking for work, who could and would fill the criteria necessary.rating 0.................

First time but wont be my last
Went for lunch yesterday with some friends and i was pleased I did. Had my reservations about going as a friend of mine had said she went and said it was no good. Well got to say thats the last time I listen to her she was so wrong. lovely and warm inside so I didnt want to leave, food was to lush, and the ice cream sundae I had was to die for, real ice cream like from the ice cream van. Gonna go back again soon with me family ;)

Well had lunch yesterday and have to say i was totally impressed. There was a coach in the car park and it was really busy but I still had my food really quickly. The girls were happy with everything we had. loving the garlic chicken, so gonna have a go at this at home. cheers to the staff who also invited us to a party at the end of march to celebrate 10 years of the mountains owners being there, thought that was really nice of them, must show I go so often now lol

Avoid this place better quality in wetherspoons
Turned up man behind the bar was scruffy and unkempt. Prawn cocktail was ok apart a microwaved bread roll to impersonate fresh and a tomatoes that was hard and freezing cold. Steak ok but sauté potatoes were just chips just cut in a round way. Hair on the plate twice.

After someone recommending this pub to us we had high hopes. on requesting a table for 5 and room for a pram the waitress rudely replied oh its a big pram if i had heard this i had gone elsewhere. the carvery was vile. vegetables were mushy potatoes were solid and the gravy was so thick the gravy coming out of a tin of dog food looks more appealing!!!
we will not be going here again thats for sure!

 Very Good
A party of 8 of us went there yesterday. We prebooked for 1.00pm. Food was on time and to a very high standard. Most of us selected off the £6.00 menu.
Excellent value, friendly staff, no hesitation in going there again and again.

Visited the goytre arms today, bought 4 meals, 2 rump steaks, chicken in bacon in cheese and a cheese and broccoli bake. Meals came took one look and turned us off completely, they tastes absolutely foul!! Chips were from indian next door, dried up and complete teeth brakers!! Steaks dry and burnt, and chicken was smaller than a mushroom!! Please avoid this pub! It should be shut down, one suggestion give the chef his p45, get rid asap!

 Lying staff
I booked last weds over the phone a nd was told the carvers was 8.99 and there was another menu available. This was great as some of our party did not want a carvery. However, when we arrived today we noticed there was only carvery available. When I questioned the staff about this i was told quite rudely that none of their staff would say that and I must be mistaken. I know what I was told and repeat it during the phone conversation so my auntie heard. The staff still wouldn't accept this and were really rude to me. Why would I lie about what I'd been told, I was looking forward to a family meal out! They even questioned had I phoned the correct pub!!! Well yes of course as we wouldn't be booked in!!! I must say the food smelled lovely but I was too upset to stay and give them my money plus my children didn't want a carvery so our family left the rest of the group and ate elsewhere. It really ruined our afternoon. I for one will never visit that place if they treat first time guests in that way!!! Shame on you mountain air staff!

many people in our party ordered the steak, which arrived in a sizzling hot plate. If you asked for medium, you got well done as it carried on cooking as you ate it!! The chips then burnt on the same hot plate. Some of the orders were mixed up, we had a party of 20, one of our party had her meal as everyone else was finishing theirs. When we asked the waitress what the problem was, she was very rude. we are not talking about a young inexperienced waitress here. The pathetic side salad was £2 and was really just a garnish!!! All in all not a good experience. Diner beware!!

I am the new owner of the Goytre Arms (another one). I am aware of the problems that have affected this pub in the last 2 years. All I can promise is that the food is high quality local produce which is freshly prepared and cooked to order by our experienced chefs. We do not sell ASDA smart price or Morrisons or any products from any other supermarket chain like previous owners. Come try the food and see for yourself! I welcome all previous unsatisfied customers back to try our new menu, and welcoming staff. Thankyou very much, hope to see you alll soon.

 A good meal
Really good attentive service on arrival. Dropped off a bit once the restaurant got busy and we had to ask for someone to take our order after waiting ten minutes. The food was much better than I'd expect for £8.50 (sunday lunch). The gravy was a bit thick but that's the only complaint I'd have about the food. Overall definitely good value if you fancy a cheap and cheerful pub lunch.

 very basic. disapointing
as my previous comment was removed (hello trip advisor impartiality...), here it is again> i did ask for a chicken soup, which was served ok, with a stale bread. but when i came back to my car, a TIN OF CHICKEN SOUP (19p, asda) was missing on the shelf you can see when you park your car at the back.i have been charged £3.95, clearly a rip off. as i said earlier, the new manager used to run a flower shop so its going to take some times before she's up tyo the job. this message removed again? no prob, we'll flood this website

I Am the new owner of the goytre arms, i can assure you now that the food here is 100% not asda smart price, our food is specially freshly prepared by our qualified, experienced chef's. At the goytre arms we believe in quality & have a very high standard! Our restaurant is a renowned establishment where families are always welcome. Our Sunday lunch has a popular reputation among the local community and is also an increasingly popular destination for those travelling from further afield. We advise that you reserve your sunday lunch due to popular demand. Children are welcome in all of our food areas and in the summer months we serve food outside and have regular barbeques, as well as family fun days. We also have a large childrens play area & 2 free of charge car parking areas with 50 car parking spaces. The Goytre Arms has long been known for serving fine, traditional ales - a reputation we aim to maintain. We also offer a comprehensive but affordable range of wines and spirits with a large selection to choose from. Come and visit us here at the Goytre Arms to relax and unwind with peaceful, cosy surroundings, wonderful food and good company.

THE COMMENT BELOW IS WRITEN BY AN EX EMPLOYEE WHO IS BITTER AS HER BOYFRIEND WAS SACKED DUE TO BEING VERY UNPROFFESIONAL AN BURNING FOOD ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, DUE THO THIS SHE FELT THE NEED 2 ASSAULT THE OWNER, THEN THE OWNER RUNG THE POLICE, ASDA FOOD IS ALMOST CERTAINLY NOT USED HERE, ALL FOOD IS FRESHLY MADE & OF A HIGH STANDARD! THIS IS JUST A BITTER EX WAITRESS, ALL STAFF ARE PAID MINIMUM WAGE & TAX & NI CONTRIBUTIONS ETC ARE ALSO PAID. THE OLD CHEF WHO WAS APPALING WAS SACKED & THE NEW CHEF IS FABOLUS, HIS MEALS ARE EXCELLENT.

 A disgrace
now that new management have taken over the goytre arms they have turned what used to be a lovely and well thought of pub into a disgrace. The food served is now mainly microwaveable ASDA Smart Price meals which cost under a pound to buy but are sold at regular resturant prices. The staff are paid just 4 pound an hour and are treated terribly. One employee who had worked for the previous owners very happily, was assulted by the new manager because she refused to leave without being paid. She was put in hospital, the police are now involved and she was still never paid. It is such a shame to see a pub that could do so well in the hands of someone who is clearly going to destroy its once excellent reputation.

The worst meal I have ever refused to eat
Went to the Goytre Arms for a meal to celebrate Fathers dad. Our party of five were absolutely appalled at the amount of time we had to wait for food and when it finally arrived, 3 meals were served and 10 minutes later the other two were served. The food was awful, certainly not what was described on the menu. The manager when we spoke to her about the meal etc was defensive and rude and to be quite honest not interested in customer satisfaction but rather just her profit margin. I certainly would never go there again.

I visit this pub fairly regularly and the food is pretty up to scratch. However don't ask for a jug of tap water - you'll be pretty robustly refused! The proprietor prefers to sell you water and makes no bones about it. That aside the place is worth a visit.

 1 Rossette For The Location.
Lovely location on the bank of the River Usk unfortunately the food did not match the location I got the impression they could not handle the size of my booking (12 Adults).

Good 1st course which was unfortunately not matched by the main, most of the group ordered Roast Beef with Honey Glazed Roast Parsnips, Roast Potatoes, Yorkshire Pudding and Seasonal Vegetables.

Then the lottery began some plates arrived with Roast Potatoes and no Yorkshire Pud, some arrived with Yorkshire Pud and no Roast Potatoes not one plate arrived with Honey Glazed Roast Parsnips when the waitress was asked about the parsnips we were told they were on there way only to find 5 minutes later that they didn’t even have any.

Highly disappointing experience for what is one of the most expensive Sunday Dinners in and around Gwent (just shy of £20).

Also be aware of the service charge which is automatically added to your bill it’s not compulsory to pay so don’t hesitate to deduct it from your bill if your not happy.

 The Best There Is.
Every month I organise a Sunday Lunch get-together for a group of friends (average group 12 adults) and on the three occassions we've visited the 'Royal Hotel' we've all had a fantastic meal and found the staff excellent.
There are plenty of restaurants/pubs that charge twice the price for a Sunday Dinner that you'll pay here but believe me if you want to experience the best Sunday Dinner there is to be eaten in Gwent head to the ‘Royal Hotel’ in Usk.
Book well in advance because they do get fully booked up fairly quickly and be prepared to wait as everything is cooked to order.

Nice pub / restaraunt in Tredegar
Good menu, good service and good beers. I live local and it's the only place I take people out to eat at when we've got visitors.
Well worth a visit if anyone is looking for a Sunday lunch or family / friends get together. Equally as good for couples looking for a table for two Probably one of the nicest pubs / restaurants in the area.
Nice relaxed and friendly atmosphere about the place and easy to park / drive / taxi to or from.
Highly recommended so I'll give it a 9/10.

 -
ABSOLOUTLY SHOCKING. My family of twelve - nine adults and three children booked for a birthday meal at 6:30pm on a Saturday in December 2006. We arrived at 6:30pm prompt and purchased drinks before we were seated but the mood was soon to be spoilt as we were told that the table we had booked over a month prior had to vacated by 8:15. It was 6:45 by the time we were seated so with only an hour and a half to enjoy a very important family occasion we had no choice but to leave. We asked to see the manager immediately but he was not available (USUAL STORY). We could only speak to the very young members of staff which were completely out of there depth with running a restaurant without any management on the premises. As you can imagine this ruined the whole evening for everyone. I can safely say that none of the 12 of us will ever step foot in this pub ever again.

The New and Improved Rock Tavern
The Rock Tavern is a wonderful place to eat, the food is fantastic and the waiting staff are friendly and helpful. I was allowed a look at the new B & B accomidation they offer and the rooms are clean and fresh for a great price too. Well done to the new owner who has brought this lovely pub back to what it should be.

 lacking customer service
* landlord rude to employees in front of customers.

* had booked a table and told landlord we had arrived-landord didn't tell staff we were there and we had to ask again when we realised other people were arriving and being given tables.

* waited full 10 minutes for the seventh of seven meals-had to ask for meal in the end-looks like they forgotten it! looked like they microwaved piece of chicken quickly but was overdone and horrible.

* staff not at all familiar with menus and what accompanied the meals

* meals over-priced and not that nice-steaks not cooked as asked. Portions small for the money.

*wouldn't recommend

Bad Food, Bad Staff, Food just a rip off
I had a mean at this pub with a firend as we live near. The manager mangaed to 'fit us in'.
I looked around at the other meals and disliked the look of them all. The waitress couldnt recommend anything (as she knew it was all a rip of)
My friend ordered ckicken with bbq sauce and got microwaved chicken with a tons of chees and tomatos sauce, really rank and a total rip off.
One to avoid

Nice pub, shame about the manager!
The Goytre arms is a well presented pub in a pleasant location. However the ale quality is akin to that of a beer tent at a fairground. The food is well cooked but often not what was ordered. The staff are generally pleasant but always changing due to the intolerably rude management.
Difficult to justify visiting this pub when all the other nearby establishments are so much better.

 youngsters pub upstairs traditional downstairs
Great food; great atmosphere. The foresters has it all. Run by the same Landlady for 20 years The foresters crowd has a traditional appeal to the youngsters who can dance away till early hours at the best light system and white label music venue in the valleys. The club is initimate and pumping - but you have to visit on a Saturday. Downstairs the mock tudor walls give you the traditional feel that makes the foresters the last true 'pub' in Blackwood. All in all the friendly atmosphere and safe environment makes the 'f's' a great place to visit and an even better place to stay. Whats that you say? Yes they even have a guest house attached that gives the best in 12 tog comfort.

 not local? not welcome!
RUDE staff and owners. got treated like dirt as we weren't local. waited ages for food, meal ordered didn't arrive - no apology, had to order again and when it came it was mediocre. i then witnessed the land lady feed her dog crisps from her own mouth so i doubt the hygiene is up to much. felt very unwelcome and annoyed.

 what a friendly welcome
admiring the views from the mynydd maen mountain, we came across this pub. On entering, we were warmly welcomed and when sitting by the fire with a drink, my wife asked if they did food we were told they would cook for us. we had a lovely home cooked meal with dessert for a very reasonable cost. They are in the process of improving their menu and restaurant and I am sure thst we will be visiting the Lamb again.

 Best in Blackwood
Rock Inn now renamed The Rock Tavern, has changed hands many times in the last few years. Since the new owners have moved in, things have improved there 100%. They offer bed and breakfast accomodation, fantastic food (they are in the good food guide now) a themed disco every fortnight. I was there on Valentine's night with my boyfriend, we ate a woderful 3 course meal, played Mr and Mrs, and the staff couldnt do enough for us. Well done to the new owners for creating such a wonderful place to go. I certainly will be going there again

 Canal side pub
Wonderful pub with wonderful employees. The setting is ideal and all of the regulars are extremely friendly and welcome new comers with welcome arms.
The only let down is the manager who is incompetent and not fit to serve the public. He is lazy in every aspect of business and a let down to the people who have been going there for years.

A once geat pub fast becoming a 'dive'.
What a big pity that this well situated and attractive pub has gone free-fall into decline. Real Ale has been taken off and replaced with very expensive 'smooth' beers. Yuk!
The staff, in my humble opinion, have no real interest in their jobs. Poorly poured beers leaving large heads and not offering to top them up. A big black mark considering the 'London' prices that they now charge.
The Landlord/owner very very rarely is seen on the premises.
The food also is bland and very over-priced. All in all a place to avoid if a real pub is what you are looking for.

Sadly now that this once beautiful old Inn has gone completely down the drain. The beer and food are quite terrible. It has changed hands so many times and no-one has made a 'go' of it.

 Very friendly bar staff....
Well, one friendly bar maid made our evening at the Market Tafarn mildly enjoyable. Her smiling face was a welcome distraction from the pan-faced chav-locals that stood clutching their pint pots looking more like their at a wake than enjoying a saturday night.

Still, they all f'ed off by 9pm and the video jukebox and pool table was ours.

The whole of Abergavenny sucks, the Market Tafarn sucks slightly less.

We stayed above this pub and they let us have lock ins until 1am which was a real bonus.

If you like the country pubs you find in the middle of nowhere, with a friendly welcome and good quality food and drink here is one just a bit out of the way in the South Wales valleys.
