 It's a cracking watering hole
Bruce's salacious ales are second to none - such is the condition of it/them, I've seen a fresh on keg of beer run off in a day in there, and virtually nowt lasts longer than three/four days.
He has some cracking bar staff to boot.

i agree with owd eli on the subject of public toilets or lack of them. if you are caught short in the town centre there are no public toilets in which to relieve oneself. you either have to go into another pub or macvdonalds with entails buying somthing to use the facilities. at one time we had two wonderfull victorian underground public loos in the town centre but the council in their wisdom closed them and conccreted over. another great usefull victorian legacy closed. the end result is what tou have now people desprate for a pee finding a ouiet corner to relieve themselves. as for the foreward thinking council what you sow so you shall reap.

the best way to stop people urinating in public on the real ale trail is to build more public convienences ie toilets or put up portaloos northern rail is making lots of money out of increased passengers due to the real ale trail let them foot the bill. its the same in huddersfield town centre no public loos.

 potential
at the moment this pub is a shadow of its former glory, when it served probably the best pint of tetleys in huddersfield. it is a grade 2 listed building so it has plenty of character. it would make a wonderful real ale pub. but i dont know the present licencees position on this. but on a recent visit it seems to be dying on its feet. A GREAT SHAME!!

popped in last week friday lunch although the pub was quiet had a good chin wag with the bar lady. beer absolutley spot on timmy taylors bitter orderded pie and peas which were superb. what a fantastic interior and unusual shaped pub but very interestng with all the textile paraphenalia adorning the walls. a pub well woth a visit

 cocky landlady
good pub with wide range of beers local breweries well in evidence. Guy with muttonchop sideburns well knowledgeable and likeable and pretty attentive when serving. The landlady though you get the impression has a bit of an attitude towards certain customers, she seem to go overboard with some gushing in greetings and so on but others get a bit of a shrift and cocky sort of service.

 bit expensive
As time has gone on this pub has got more and more pricey. The kings head at the other end of the station has probably got the same beer on at about 40p cheaper I dont know why but there it is.

 sparkling beer
Just another comment to congratulate the Kings head on serving probably the best kept beer in huddersfield if not further. Popped in mid week and had a pint of salopian lemon dream, the flavour and taste was superb and in all my drinking years have I seen a beer with so much clarity it was positivley sparking like a well cut diamond, perfect. Bruce takes pride in his beer spending a lot of time in the cellar, a much maliged craft cellar work but when done well produces amazing results. Well worth a visit from anyone wantig a fist class pint of beer

 pub utopia
this pub should be on the educational curriculum of all above age drinkers. this establishment should be the blueprint for all pubs selling beer. the choices of both draught and bottled beers is mind boggling. i remember the dark days when you went into a pub and all they had on tap would be a bitter a mild and a watered down lager, thank got that is a thing of the past. ian and taya have done a wonderful job of bringing thier pub into the 21st century. a real joy and education all power to the grove

dont bend over and attempt to pick up any change that might have fallen on the floor otherwise you might get a suprise in the rear end of your anatomy if you know what i mean, a certain type of clientelle. but if youre up for it not a bad place to crush a grape.

fine pub selling excellent tetleys near the uni taditional style. by the way i agree with ozy regarding the zepher bar have tuned for the worse they seem to believe all the hype about themselves and getting very selective on who they serve obviously losing sight of the fact we are in a reccession. all customers are good customers

Some proper plonkers in this pub good range of beers but do not seem to realize the value of their beer drinking cuustomers. I think that they have been brainwashed into believeing everyone is a binge drinker. On the occasion I went saturday lunch with the test match cricket against the aussies od the tele, the place was empty. I would have thought a few locals would have been in. One guy eventually came in ordering half of shandy then started making remarks on howw sad it was for someone to be in a pub on their own drinking beer and watching tele. at least id had 3 pints, i promptly left leaving the pub to the saddo with half of shandy. no wondet pubs are shutting

Nice enough roadside pub with well kept beers by a concientios land lord, which is more than can be said for the clientelle frequenting the establishnent, very cliqueish some of them thinking they own the joint loooking down on other customers and making snidy disparaging remarks quietly amongst themselves. Very masonic and unpleasant.

The landlord looks like a member of a hells angels chapter, but the range of beers is good and he seems to be making an effort tosupport local breweries. the meals arnt as good as they used to be, but the ambience of the place is quite pleasant with a vie of the fine architectur outside. Very handy pub in a fine location by the very fine station in a nice town

Bruce is an absolute star, I remember him years ago in the Rat attired in his watstcoat and western styled boots with silver points, he certainly made an impression. Now he has his own pub and still making an impression with the range an excellence of his beers, still wearing his impressive waistcoats, but can't see his boots behind the bar. Keep up the good work you are a star behind the bar!.

Food excellent, although a bit on the pricey side.

Have returned many times as quality is consistent and a good pub is hard to find.

Having said this we were very disappointed to learn that the young waitresses did not receive their Xmas tips and that in fact these had been retained by the owners for a period of 4 weeks. These tips were then used to buy them a Xmas gift - this is scandalous - these were tips given in goodwill for the waitresses to spend as they wished. For this reason we will not be patronising the pub again.

This little pub, (which is what it looks like from the outside) is a refreshingly unexpected quality restaurant within. Not pretentious or stuffy, but a relaxing and warm (especially if your near the real fire) atmosphere, and it just so happens to serve some of the BEST food in the whole of Yorkshire. Yes I have searched for a restaurant that serves freshly cooked food, well presented and by competent staff, and here is a little bit of utopia right here in the heart of Yorkshire. By the way, I travel from Doncaster to eat here.

This pub has gone down hill over the years. A good clean is long overdue. I have stopped going in it due to the increaing dinginess, it used to be a great place to hang out with friends.

Stopped in with a mate, for a quick beer and an authentic Pub experience. Cold Beer, and relaxed/laid back environment. Typical English fare.

Attractive Brunette, with a hard little body waited on us. Makes the view, nice. Will be back, and possibly stay a night or two.

 popular pub
This pub is never empty. It's a real drinking pub which has kept a lot of its traditional character without becoming old fashioned. Lovely beer and very nice people running it.
In fact I like it so much I would like to rent the little shop (which is empty at moment) attached to the pub building, but cannot for the life in me find out who is dealing with the property. It's been a Barber shop for years before the man himself retired. I would love to take over the shop and be the new barber on the block (so to speak). If anyone knows anything please let me know. The guinness is great in the Crown, too. Cheers

 Good food, poor service
This is a good restaurant in which the service is not bad, but the service in the put is very slow. Just hope that the bar staff aren't busy talking to their friends. Have left this pub on more than one occasion to go elsewhere for a drink as the service has been so slow.

Patchy, overpriced food (4.75 for all desserts and veggie meals around 12 quid) and very poor service. We were left without any waitress for half an hour. So we didn't bother with the extortionate, ordinary sounding dessert. Nice pub though.
