Visited today, during walk. Very friendly, lovely old pub. Heard it was closing in two weeks. Huge shame. A pub you can sit in next to an open fire and talk and be heard without the music in the background, a rare thing these days. Brewery should think again about closing it.

Called in for a pint and bitter lemon (£2.82) on a walk in area on 31/7/15. Appalled by letter on display in the bar from the brewery (dated 27/7/15) chastising the landlord for sales down 12% because the pub is attracting the wrong sort of people - implying a lot of regulars are low life. A letter like this is a disgrace. The brewery people should hang their heads in shame.

 Rude Landlord
Hi Kate, Some people have sent complaints to the Managing Director at Sam Smiths, Tadcaster - they record the complaints and if they get enough, he'll be gone. Regards, Jon

 Sam Smiths don't care...
The landlord's a muppet and everyone knows it, but the brewery are not interested. The pub ticks over no matter what stands behind the bar, people go here because the beer's cheap. The current tenants here are ignorant, and that's that.

 Rude & aggressive landlord
What's the matter with this man ? I ordered 4 drinks and asked for 2 bags of crisps, and because I changed my mind on the flavour of 1 bag, he nearly bit my head off - a very rude man, awful manners ! Why is he in this job ? The beer was sour too, but didn't bother complaining :o(

Have to agree with the other comments.
The Beer tasted funny and The Landlord really should not be in a job that envolves contact with the public.
A very rude man.

 Miserable Landlord
The bald man behind the bar was so miserable and sour faced, I thought he must be a part-timer who wasn't happy with his job. When someone said he was the landlord, I was gobsmacked. I see he's got quite a few complaints, and I'm not surprised!

 micheal ?
Surely a genuine poster could spell his own name ? This looks like the work of a desperate and illiterate (I know he is) landlord trying to preserve his good name. Absolutely pathetic. How about a proper, customer focussed landlord Sam Smiths ?, get the existing pillock out please. 1 rosette for the beer !

 Very poor manners
We headed to the gardener's for a few drinks with the kids. My husband was holding our 2 year old daughter in the doorway, when this ignorant man behind the bar barked 'no children at the bar !', no please, no thank you, he didn't even look at us ! We felt most unwelcome and embarrassed; everyone else looked uncomfortable too. When he finally served me, he was busy chatting to one of the regulars stood behind me, again, no please or thank you... how rude is that ! :o(

 Unfriendly landlord and staff
A really nice pub and a great pint of Sam Smiths, spoilt by an unfriendly and arrogant landlord. The guy seems to despise his customers, and never says thank you when you hand your money over the bar. An utter weirdo who seems to groom his staff to behave in the same absurd manner. If you have a thick skin, drink the beer - Sam Smith's is a nice pint. If you like a friendly atmosphere, go elsewhere.

 Nice place
This pub is an earthly paradise and there's a time travelling portal in the Gents toilets that enables you to visit your future self and buy him a pint and a pack of prok scratchings. I also love the collection of mythical creatures that live in the car park and come out at night to nibble your earlobes.

 get them out
Brilliant local pub, know all the locals. we frequent the place 3 times a week on average, beautiful surroundings, witty banter, always made to feel at home.........................by the patrons + the general public passing by for a nice cheap pint in pleasant surroundings. But sweet jesus (+ im no means religious) the management are the most miserable pair, who leave a bitter after taste to the thirtiest of customer.
Considering how hard it is these days for publicans to get enough custom + how many public houses shut down every week this couple should be laughing (that'd be the day). Their intent and purpose is to make your pint an uncomfortable one.
I could go on and on but I'll leave that to the next aggrieved customer who innocently drops in for a pleasant pint in a pleasant establishment.

What a great pub, with cheerfull locals and a jolly old landlord with beautiful facial hair. We only went in for a couple of pints but in the 45 minutes we were there all my hair grew back, my beer gut vanihsed and for an encore the landlord turned my wife into a newt! Would definitely go back!

Fantastic location - the only good thing to say!
After a lovely sunday morning walk we expected to get a warm welcome at the Gardeners Arms and stay for Sunday lunch. Just ordering the drinks was an unpleasant experience and the menu was poor. Despite it being close to home we certainly won't go back or recommend it to anyone else. The staff need to learn manners and hospitality. The only good thing about the place is the location.

 Shame about the landlord
This could be a really nice pub - if they changed the landlord. What a grumpy sod.
Has a great beer garden so it's somewhere you can take dogs. The beers cheap too.
They could make a killing if they put on bbqs in the Summer, but seems they would prefer to keep this place just for 'local' people.

 Don't bother
Just tried to go here for lunch with my family. We ordered drinks while choosing what to eat and decided to go elsewhere after being treated awfully by the guy behind the bar. When answering our questoins he was very short and sharp. I asked for an apple juice for my little girl and was given a fizzy apple drink. When I said I wanted apple juice that wasn't fizzy he banged the glass on the counter and said yeah, that's what you've got. Apple juice! A very aggressive man who doesn't seem to be interested in entertaining families at all.

 Walkers, give it a miss.
29 of us, walkers, called by on Tuesday. We asked if we could eat our sandwiches outside (in the totally empty picnic area) prior to ALL going in for a drink. Everyone ALWAYS buys a drink, some more than one. After initially being given the ok, we were very shortly hustled out of the picnic area by our not so genial host. Apparently 'outside' meant 'outside the premises'. No problem, we went. They must be making a lot of money in this pub to turn away 29 customers on a February Tuesday. The Marquis of Granby in Knaresborough was very welcoming.

Nice pub - shame about food
Having visited this lovely traditional pub a number of years ago when the beer garden was full of people enjoying lovely lunches, was surprised to see the lack of people eating. I realised why after ordering what I can only describe as the worst freezer to microwave meal I have had the pleasure of paying £5.95 for! Locals are blaming this elusive 'area manager'. What a shame as this pub has so much potential, doesn't he realise that people who buy meals also buy drinks. A great place to call in for a drink but please avoid the menu.

My grandparents used to run the Gardeners Arms when I was little and all the memories I have of that place are fantastic. I remember sitting in the snug (opposite the bar) with a glass of coke while my grandad talked and chatted with drinkers. In the kitchen my Nana prepared and served food and when I was a little older I used to help her serve food to tables with my brother. The large open fire is the best feature I can recall with iron horseshoues etc surrounding it where we used to warm up after a day in the rain. I've read some of the comments made of The Gardeners Arms but I wont take any of it as to me it is still the warm place where the locals were welcoming and the staff knew how to make you feel welcome.
The pub also featured in an episode of Emmerdale where my Nana served 'Cain' pint, so technically its famous!
All in all, I don't know what the Gardeners is like today but it once was the heart of the local community. If anybody remembers Gren and Barbra (my grandparents) then you'll know what I mean.

Prefer to remain anonymous.

A friend & I were meant to be seeing live music that was originally scheduled to be at The Little Wonder but was changed at the last moment. We decided since we were already there, we may as well go in for a bit. BIG MISTAKE.

We walked in to find a giant alsatian & eight or so middle-aged people. One was clearly the landlady & two looked like, well, druggies.

They were all absolutely intoxicated. A few of them, including the barman, barked WHAT DO YOU WANT? First, we asked to use the toilet (as we'd driven 2 hours to get there) & they said not unless we buy something. We said fair enough, but then realised we'd left our bags in the car. They then started shouting FUCK OFF! JOG ON! but the two druggies were blocking the door, so we couldn't leave. We kept saying OK sorry, we'll just leave., but they blocked us in & kept hassling us for what felt like ages! We eventually pushed out the door & ran to the car, still able to hear heckling from inside the pub.

 Liking it as our local
We re-discovered the Empress recently after thinking for a long time that there weren't any decent pubs in the neighbourhood. Good beer (Daleside), good atmosphere and friendly staff. The live music gig we saw was great too - must try the food next.

 Area manager daftness
The Gardeners is and has always been a lovely pub. I was shocked to hear that the overbearing area manager is planning to throw his weight round and be nasty. Doesn't the twit realise this is a country pub, not a town beer boutique with no soul; it is a treasured community venue, an historic building, known and loved by many from inside and well outside Harrogate.

What a beautiful pub, went visited a few times when a lovely young couple was there but unfortunately they have left, gutted!! It's amazing how quick it turns back into a shit hole! Especially when they chucked out of the idiots! Come back pleaseeeee

Mrs Tummy Ache
What a dump. The food even worse. I dread to think how longit has been since the fat was changed in the fryer. our sandwiches didn't have any butter on and the bread was hard. AND we went for the safe option! The vinegar bottle was like something out of a horror film. It was gross.

It's such a shame as the beer garden lovely to sit in, but the whole place is manky.

 Whats going on?
Better late than never! I visited the pub a couple of times over xmas and found it to be mostly ok. The Tuesday night quiz is still a great night out if you like a bit of music and a bit of fun. The bloke that hosts it, is still very funny and we were lucky enough to walk out with £100 more than we started with. (Now that's what you call a good quiz!) Bar staff could be a bit more joyful and we never worked out who was running the place but overall the place is pretty good. They now serve food on an evening (Wed - Sat) and the food looks very good but i would rather eat in the pub than go upstairs in to the restaurant but i suppose the choice is yours. Best nights seem to be Tues and Fri.

I would have to agree with Mrs Whites comments regarding the last Landlord which is why my family and friends now drink at another pub in the area.
Having said that, i have been told that the Empress is now under new management and that the new couple are excellent so we are going to try it again next Tuesday on the Quiz night as it used to be our favourite night out at the pub. i will let you know what i think of the place next week.

my girlfiend and I visited this excuse for an eating house on Saturday night. We were subjected to appalling children running around without any supervision. At one stage one of them started eating from what we discovered were the tapas containers for the bar. the staff didn't seem to have had any training whatsoever. It became apparent that the children belonged to the landlord! I understand that there has been a lot of money spent on a refurbishment of the property. It shouldn't have opened without proper staffing and training. It will be money down the drain.

The place recently reopened..about 3 weeks prior. The wait was 2 hours and the food was terrible. Way overpriced. Apparently the regular chef was not there but still that is no excuse to serve substandard food, after one has waited 2 hours, and at high prices. We will never go back again.

Former great country inn, now ruined identikit pub
You’re twenty years too late to see this place at its best. Once a charming small country pub it was ruined by Tetley’s when they first enlarged it and then added a Wacky Warehouse! What were they thinking of? Still, at least they’ll have lined their pockets by flogging a few of the best original features. One or two survived the ransacking by the contractors but these days it is best avoided.

I run a folk club every Friday in the Empress and am therefore in a position to observe the running of the pub from two different perspectives. All that I have seen and experienced there causes me to be greatly surprised at Mrs. J. White's comments. The current landlord and landlady are the most welcoming of people. They work hard to ensure the pub remains friendly, efficiently run and trouble free. My suggestion to any readers of this is no tjust to take her's or my comments at face value, instead, visit the pub and decide for yourselves. I have every confidence that you will be well received and treated.

Ms E Clark
 Ref previous untrue comment
I have to disagree with the previous comment. I have found everyone at the Empress to be extremely helpful and friendly - ask the Folk Club, the four football teams, the pool team, the dog owners and the many regulars ! The only people they would be less than polite to are those who swear, let their kids run riot, won't leave when its hometime or those who are otherwise disrespectful to the landlord, his staff or the regulars.

 This pub rocks!
This is Harrogates best kept secret!, it may be small but what it lacks for in space it makes up in entertainment. The music is top notch and the owner Chalie and the bar staff are among the best I have ever come across. The only draw back is Carol (bar lady) who always seems to have a sad face on ! Any ways pay this place a visit especially at the weekend - trust me you wont be disapointed!

 My Experience
I have been to this pub off and on for many years. My famiy have regularly attended the quiz nights etc and it has been a great place to get together. Unfortunately the current landlords customer service skills seem to be non existant - regulars at the Empress have been treat quite badly by them and the staff. This however is my personal experience.

Good Pub, the worlds worst area manager
The problem with the Gardeners Arms is the Area Manager. The Gardeners can't keep a Landlord because Mr F. O'B is so unpleasant and unrealistic to work for. He ruins what is otherwise an excellent Pub!
