 Awful! Don't go.
This place was recommended to us in the visitors book of the nearby lodge we were staying in. The advice, you need to book is always a good sign. That was the first issue, despite calling throughout the day the phone was never answered. We should have taken it as an omen and not gone, but only being three minutes drive we thought we would risk it. The first thing that struck us was the no menu set up. A huge board of specials placed strategically in front of the main car park entrance is the only place to view what is on offer, which as the place is busy obviously gets very crowded. The next stroke of genius is to combine this with the food order point where the obnoxious, we assumed landlord, barks at you until you have completed your order. In our case we were also treated to him answering the phone to someone (lucky them) half way through our order. Clearly a customer in some distress who had lost something in the pub. He was very helpful though in telling whoever it was he was too busy to look but if he remembered he may look tomorrow. I'm sure they felt much better. When our food arrived we had to send back the side dishes as they were stone cold, they returned after a thorough pinging in the microwave. I ordered the rib eye steak, which I can honestly say was the most disappointing piece of meat I have ever been served. Medium rare it was not. Charred at the edges, tough and TINY! Admittedly the very middle was a little pink (and cold!). The pie my wife and daughter had was no more than mince and kidney slop on a plate with a piece of bought buff pastry thrown at it as it left the kitchen. It may have been home made, if home is what they call the factory it's produced in before being heated up at the Walnut. It was best summed up by my 12 year old daughters question what meat is this daddy? It tastes like dog meat smells. I'm sure this last part is coincidence but I awoke in the early hours of this morning and 5 hours later my business in the bathroom I think is finally coming to an end. If this is the 8th best place to eat in Chichester out of 55, then I invite all residents of Chichester to visit us in Chester at any time in the future.

 Rude miserable landlord
This pub has got to have the rudest, most miserable landlord I've ever encountered. How on earth people with this level of social skills run front line service industry outlets, I don't know. Steer clear until he's gone.

Best `proper' pub on the outskirts of Chichester!
Great pub, great atmosphere, with a good range of Gales/Fullers beers which are all kept beautifully. Extensive menu with something for everyone. Once a month they have a live jazz evening and in the summer months the landlord holds great bbq's. There's a skittle alley on site and ample parking if you were thinking of organising a social night out with some friends!! A definite pub to visit in the area.

 Loved It!
My sister and I got dragged to this pub by my Mum and Dad. (Some things you have to do in life). I thought it was probably old foggie pub. Was I wrong - the pub was packed with loads of mid twenties something and we had a great time. Before we had even ordered our drinks the locals were joking with us. I now go there all the time when visiting the parents.

We recently had our Christmas Party here. Excellent Excellent Excellent
I had the best Chrsitmas dinner I have ever had (sorry Mum). Best tasting turkey, best stuffing (for which I was given the recipe - thank you), Amazing vegetable selection (we counted TEN different veggies plus roast pots, parsips and Yorkshire Pudding. Wow. If anybody goes try the dessert Pecan Dacquoise. Highly recommended.

 Quirky and Fun
My girlfriend and I went to this pub on a friends recommendation - at first I thought it was going to be a bit snobby because of the decor (and a NO SWEARING Policy!!!) but we had a great time with some of the regulars. Not at all standoffish and very funny. We had the best night out for a long time with or without swearing.

Beautiful pub, the food is mulch, badly run
Its such a shame that tied pubs like this are so badly run. Poor service! The pub is beautiful it is in one of the best locations on the south coast. Its not a proper country pub, they wouldn't let my dog in. The beer is tied and the food is reheated rubbish that a dinner lady would shunn.

Great - don't tell your friends
The Royal Oak at Hooksway, Chilgrove, Chichester is a real country pub. The village of Hooksway contains 2 houses and one pub. The food is real pub grub and the beers are traditional. Log fires in the winter and folk or jazz every friday. Keep it secret or you'll spoil it!

 welcoming and friendly. Relaxing.
We keep returning to this pub when we are down for the week-end. Great ambience, cheerful staff and superb food. You can really tell that it is quality home cooked food that a great deal of pride goes into it. Well done to the owners. Great Place

Warm, friendly and a lovely atmosphere
My opinion of this pub is that its a warm and friendly family run pub. The food was really nice and the atmosphere was very relaxing.
In the summer its fantastic as its really nice to sit by the canal with a good group of people and of course a very nice bottle of wine, and The Waterside Inn has a great range of wines so sometimes a very hard decision what wine to go for.

 great food, great views !
James (the landlord) has done a great job recently in updating the menus - the result is great food, consistently. They are VERY popular for this and the great views out over the water at beautiful Dell Quay. In the summer time site in the garden and watch the sail boats go by. Nice walks near there to walk off your dinner too !
