 Best place
This has got to be the most best place to eat and drink and be sociable. Not only is the food good but all staff are friendly and attend to any situation that arises. In saltdean Tavern a couple of weeks ago I booked a lunch party of 14 people .. they were happy to take the booking but then over a short space of time the booking escalated to 21 people. Thank you to lynn for all your help and thank you to all your staff, because of them everone had a great time. Thanks again.

 Great value carvery
Every time we pop into the Saltdean Tavern we are delighted with the great standards they set themselves. Stuart the assistant manager is always very helpful and will always have a chat with us. Can't forget the food, absolutly delicious and sooo cheap. Any excuse to go down suits me!

 Hop Poles is Shit
You think it's a cool pub?? it certainly does not represent the free and liberal Brighton! I forgot a bag in the Hop Poles, with cotton wool and shampoo and the other immaterial likes, but when I phoned to retrieve the plastic bag, there was no sight of it. Ok, it cost me 10pounds, but isn't it genuinely annoying and shit if an establishment hasn't got the skill or yet the will to make sure that uncareful customers are looked after even if they have left the premises? The food was piled up unappetizingly, it was freezing cold if you didn't sit righ next to the heater, the music was something out of disney's or indeed onassis' collection. all in all it was shite and was topped off with a stoned remark sorry mate, no we didn't see your bag but we did see the fairies swinging from the octopus off the ceiling...

what a truly vile establishment.Teenage drinkers, new born kids at the bar all day.Flooded toilets which have been left for weeks. No staff to serve you. A complete and utter dump.

 Rude staff
I found the bar staff rude, whispering about the amount I was charged for 2 drinks. To add to it I find the cleaning of near by tables with spray whilst eating unacceptable.

 Children very welcome
We're regular customers at the Park View and our 8 year old daughter has always been welcome there. We don't visit in the evening so I don't know what happens then, but the staff are always perfectly happy to see us, and have even pandered to the grown-up whims of our daughter and friend when they wanted a table of their own and to place their own orders for food and drink. And the food is fab!

New Manager (Val) has taken over since August 2005.
What a difference in Staff, Food and the service is first rate.
Obviously a big influence on the place and the Staff as the Saltdean is now a very busy place.

full of big mouth no bodys who like a bit of charlie dont go there
Friday, April 14, 2006Rating: No rosettes

ok, I might be a bit biased....
As aforementioned 'fantastic landlady', I just wanted to clear up this no children myth - we welcome children at The Park View until 8pm, inside and outside, but when the pub is very busy we request that families consider shortening the length of their stay purely for the safety of their children. So please come and give us another try - I hope you'll be pleasantly surprised!

The music varies depending on the night, some people will find some nights aweful and others awesome. dont judge it on one night, i have been going there for a while and the place is usually packed and the queue for the bar long, but the place is packed for a reason, get a £5 bottle of wine and dance the night away...saturdays are a top night to begin with

Matt Da Ali-Cats Regular
 Ali Cats
I have been going to Ali-Cats for many years and I can't see what your problem is Alice. The staff are incredibly friendly and easy-going, perhaps less so when a large group of overly drunk people are taking liberties, I don't blame them and I don't think anyone would. This pub is a small community of similar people and if you fit the bill then you are welcomed, if you take the piss then you won't be. Simple as that, also worth noting that yuppies/chavs never go down well.

 new management
Can it really be true that the ex- general manager of the Grand Hotel, Brighton hs acquired this appaling pub? - If so I wish him the best of luck - the first job will be to get rid of the dreadful reputation that this once quiet neighbourhood pub has gained for itself.

I'm sure the new incumbent will introduce himself to the nearby neighbours as soon as he's settled!

 The Open House pub
Lovely place, great decor by local Fiveways artists. Big bright and interesting. Separate areas including a chesterfield sofa lounge! Great food, lots of organic. Fab garden/patio but a bit snooty about kids staying after 7pm - even on a summers evening in the garden! Silly.
Sunday, January 29, 2006Rating: rosettes

fantastic pub in all aspects but one
Great beer, food and atmosphere but toooo smokey! Last time there were lots of smokers at lunchtime when most people were trying to eat, and also pipe and cigar smokers - YUKKKKK.
Owners could make the two areas into smoking and non-smoking at lunchtime at least.
Sunday, January 29, 2006Rating: rosettes

ok but bad policy towards families
can't believe a pub in middle of biggest family populated area of Brighton doesn't allow children, even in separate lower bar which leads out to patio. Missing a lot of business.
Sunday, January 29, 2006Rating: rosettes

 very basic local
quiet and rather ordinary pub with mainly locals chatting quietly. Not much character but useful if visiting friends or using the lovely park opposite. In great location, so a rather wated opportunity - would make a great spot for a more interesting pub serving food to families etc.

A soon-to-be-regular punter
 In one word - FANTASTIC!
Fantastic pub, none of your chain-pub rubbish, just a good honest local. An absolute gem in the back street near London Road that has everything you need; a mix of classic music and more up-to-date stuff, real ale and lagers (plus all of your normal spirits and bottles). A fantastic landlord/landlady duo and a pool table. Be prepared to never want to leave!!!

welcoming local pub with great food
A proper pub with great beers, cosy sofas and excellent home-cooked food. Music quiz on a Tuesday night and General Knowledge quiz on a Sunday night. Sunday Roasts to die for!

Linzi Taylor
 Rude and incompetent staff
The music was terrible the club too packed and it took an hour to get served at the bar. Went to leave and the cloakroom guy said he couldn't find my coat. A doorman and I searched the entire club and my boyfriend looked in the cloakroom and my coat was not there. The duty manager said they had 2 tickets with the same number on so someone else had my coat! Said the manager would call me in the morning but he didn't so I called and they had somehow found my coat so I had to travel 20 miles from Worthing to get my coat back. When I asked were it was found the woman being the bar snapped at me I've got no idea No-one ever apologised or explained how my coat somehow ended up somewhere other than the ckloakroom or the club and then somehow turned up again. Totally unproffessional and unacceptable attitude. An absolute shambles!

 In The Past..
A long departed landlord owed money to some London gangsters. He thought tucked away in Brighton he was safe, until his mate's head turned up in a plastic bag on the bar. Whether he paid up or moved on is not recorded. The pub was nick-named the Horse & Gloom for years after. It's now a cracking pub & people still get headless there.

The best place I have ever had the priviledge of drinking in. The beer tastes like it is from heaven and it is frequented by the most gorgeous women in Sussex.

 Historical pub in the Lanes
One of the two oldest pubs in Brighton, in the Lanes and 100 yards from the sea. They don't make 'em like this anymore! Good beer, good food. It's a bit pricey, but then this pub is better than most.

 Lively town centre pub
A good pub and still getting better. Quite lively, but not cliquey like so many Brighton pubs. There's a good range of drinks and interesting and carefully-prepared food. The barstaff are friendly and very hard-working.

 Excellent Gales pub
Quite possibly the best all-round pub in Brighton. The Gales beers are kept perfectly and there is an impressive range of spirits etc too. The food isn't haute cuisine but perfectly acceptable. A very popular pub, not surprisingly.

A real pub, near the station
Superb drinks and a fine selection of real ales. Good food at lunchtimes. Only 1 minute's walk from Brighton station, but generally frequented by loyal locals, rather than tourists and troublesome kids. Has just changed ownership: I hope it keeps its high standards!

 reply to alice
I too was working that night and to be fair, we let you get away with murder...a girl destroyed our xmas tree and tried to take stuff from the bar; a man fell asleep on the bench and then went through the fire escape, which i might add, sets off a silent alarm which we then have to deal with; someone brought in their own booze..a bottle of wine which we don't stock....which just takes the fucking piss and then to top it off, after we asked you to drink up and you hadn't by twenty past, you kicked up a fuss when we asked you to leave...because, unless someone can correct me, i'd forgotten the law which proportionately increases the time a customer is allowed to stay in a bar after-hours the more custom they provide...the police would love that explanation.
Wednesday, December 22, 2004Rating: rosettes

 A Customer's Response
I think Alicats is quirky, funky, up-to-date, young, but never false, with great music. Obviously 'Alice' you and your work friends didn't fit the bill! By the sounds of it, and the discription of your behaviour, you and your friends would have been better off down West Street! Alicats is great.
Monday, December 20, 2004Rating: rosettes

 Worst kind of custom
To be honest 'Alice', when i have to put up with 40 pissed up yuppie office twats; falling asleep on the seats, trying to rip down artwork and informing me at 11:30 that you didnt have to leave 'because you had given enough custom', i'll lose my temper. I have to laugh about you calling the staff ignorant too, just because your some 30+ office worker you imagine a 'mere barman' should lick your boots? Get a brain woman. May I ask why 40 middle aged office workers would have a party in Ali-cats anyway? Its a student bar, act your bloody age.
Sunday, December 19, 2004Rating: rosettes

The staff were rude even though we brought 40 people into their bar which would have otherwise been empty. They have obviously never heard of customer service and were certainly very ignorant. I can only think that there is no training provided. The hygiene standards were appalling and the place should not be allowed to remain open. It is in a serious need of refurbishment

doug greaves
 A true hidden gem!!
A lovely little pub with a really friendly atmosphere. Kids are welcomed and entertained in the day and its always lively in the evenings. Father and son landlords are always welcoming and even do an impressive clown and magic routine if you ask them. Great for watching sport and seeing bands in a relaxed but party atmosphere.
Wednesday, November 17, 2004Rating: rosettes

 very disapointed
We have ben going to the Glasdstone pub on Lewes road in Brighton for years. It has recently had a new manager. The pub has some of the rudest staff in I have ever met. We have now phoned twice before going to check they are still serving food. When you get there they are not. The kitchen worker said 'hey shit happens' Instead of apologising they give you abuse. I surgest you find some where else to drink and eat a very unpleasant atmosphere and experience.
