 BEST PUB IN AIRDRIE
THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST PUB IN AIRDRIE, THE RECENT AWARDS IT GOT GOLD IN BEST BAR NONE COMPETITION, SAYS IT ALL, AND ARE STILL IN LAST 5 FOR GOLD AWARD FOR SCOTLAND. WELL IT IS SPOTLESS CLEAN, GREAT CHOICE OF DRINKS, AT GREAT PRICES, FRIENDLY STAFF, AND THE OWNER SPEAKS TO EVERYONE WHO COMES INTO THE BAR, HAS SMALL LOUNGE/FUNCTION AREA, WHICH IS IDEAL FOR PARTYS OF 30 PEOPLE, HAS DISABLED FACILITES, SKY TV, ALL SPORTS, MUSIC AND EXCELLENT CROWD FRIDAY AND SATURDAYS AT NIGHT, AND OPENS ON A SUNDAY MORNING AT 11AM. I HAVE BEEN DRINKING IN HERE FOR 5 YEARS NOW, AND DO NOT ENTER ANY OTHER PUBS IN THE AREA, DUE TO CLIENTLE THAT USE THEM, AND WORSE THE STATE OF SOME OF THE PUBS.

Quarry Inn - closed. Now flats?
Went to Airdrie 21 April 2014 on pub research. Quarry Inn no longer. It now could be flats or the Skye View Care Centre on Cpmmpnside Street which I took a picture of.

Does anyone else have information on this?

 Great Family Friendly pub
Recently reopened after a short time closed, the pub served me great homecooked food. There were plenty of families with children eating when I was in and everyone was really friendly. Will definitely be back.

 Well loved bar
My partner and I were trying to find a new local bar for a few drinks on a Saturday night. After trying a couple of bars we ended up in the Butterburn and we were not disappointed. We sat through in the lounge area where we were able to share a decent conversation and when a couple of friends joined there were plenty of spare seats that allowed the, to join us. The staff were very friendly and we were not disappointed with our experience. It is fair to say we will be regulars there on a Saturday night from now on.

 Best in Lanarkshire!
This is THE best pub in Lanarkshire by far. The staff are great and always remember you and have a bit of banter with you; the menu is varied and REALLY GOOD VALUE (the Smoked Haddock on a bed of Mash and creamed Leeks - YUM!!!); the staff genuinely seem to WANT to be there (one of the girls told us that she often comes in on her days off for a breakfast!!) - we STUPIDLY did not go to Owens for dinner last night as we were going to a function in a 'well-known' pub/restaurant in Academy St, Coatbridge and decided to eat there - the staff in there were total miseries and the food was cr@p! Owens every time from now on!!!!!
My Grandfather used to drink in (Big) Owens many moons ago, then my Dad - and now I KNOW WHY! Don't change anything guys - you have the full package down to a 'T'!

What an absolute 'sh*thole' of a place. Don't go near here, ever! A rip off, a dive and ignorant staff. Handed £20 over and was told it was £10, backed up by other lying staff member. Staff are thieves. No wonder place is near empty. Do us a all a favour and shut the hole down.

 Very Disappointed
My family have been using the Applebank for bar meals for a number of years, however I noticed a huge difference in the quality and service on a recent visit. On arrival when ordering drinks we were informed they had NO Rose wine which I thought bizarre for a bar! I then asked if it would be acceptable for me to purchase a bottle from a nearby shop. It took the girl behind the bar 2 requests and 25 minutes to inform us that we could but they would take a £5 corkage. The portions of food were much smaller than previous visits and I noticed the place was very quiet which is unusual but obviously the Applebank not as popular as before which is a shame. Definately won't be back!

 Needs a clean.
The parking has a lot to be desired. The place is very dark, sticky finger marks on the glass and cobwebs are not a good sign so I wonder how clean the kitchen area was. As I was eating my meal, I noticed more cobwebs, most of which I could clean myself without even getting up from the table, so not an impossible task to remove in my opinion. The meal was OK, but the veg (peas and sliced carrots) were most definately from a tin. I feel that is unacceptable. Veg should be fresh and not soggy and tasting of the salted water they were tinned in. The place is not disabled friendly. Quite a task for even children or elderly to negotiate the stairs, especially when the rail stops at the last few on the bottom. The staff were unfriendly, the woman was cheeky and looked like she couldn't be bothered and I could not tell who was staff and who had just walked in from the street. Strappy vest tops and combats seemed to be the uniform. The place needs new staff, a cleaner and a wake up call. I will never be back and neither will anyone I know.

there has been a refurb of the pub recently. it was a bit run down but it looks great now. prices are great and theres a quiz on a sunday night. you win a £20 voucher off your next food bill. the food is great and its not dear. the waitress who i think is called jackie is very shy but is helpful when its not too busy!!!!!!! check out the wee barman with the glasses he is dead nice and gives you a wee bit of banter. the big chef likes a drink but he is a good cook . he used to work in bar starka in motherwell. chack it out

Great pub, great staff, great food.
Have drank in Owen's bar for a number of year's now and the place just goes from strength to strength. The bar staff are first class, the girl's are absolutely stunning, and snake, one of the few barmen must be one of the best barmen in Lanarkshire. The owner is the best landlord I have ever met, and he give's so much time to his customer's,it is commendable. The only problem is,it is a victim of it's own success, Thur, Fri, and Sat are soooo busy. It would need to be at least twice the size to have a nice comfortable drink but if you like a busy bouncing atmosphere it has got to be up there with the best. In the summer it has a massive beer garden that is very lively and enjoyable. 10 /10

 Used to be great
We enjoyed and frequented the pub for ages on a Thursday quiz night. We tried our best to continue this when the pub changed hands but after seeing the quiz night die painfully when no effort was put into it we have given up and will go elsewhere. The decision to apparently run a creche in the corner doesn't help but the final straw came when food was returned for being served cold and the person who served the food was aggressive and offered no apology. I have tasted the curry and it is great but will make no profit if the service continues like this: serving cold and growling at customers. I like Elaine and hope in the future she makes a go of the pub but killing off what had to be the most profitable night of the week seems a very strange choice. When we all find out where John and Irene eventually settle as quiz hosts there are about 40 of us who will be hot on their heels

Just been at the mint today for a treat for my mums birthday. Been before for a quick lunch and really enjoyed it but was very disappointed and angry at the service today. After ordering our meals the waiter came back to tell us that they had no mash for 2 of the meals and 1 of the starters wasnt available which was fine we didnt bother until the meals were served and my sister felt that the lasagne she had tasted a bit off, so we told the waitress who was happy to take it away only to come back full of attitude and tell us the lasagne was fine the chef had tasted and said there was nothing wrong with it and that we would still be charged for the (uneaten) lasagne because there had been no other complaints that day. There were other complaints with some of the other meals such as undercooked veg and flat beer but that wouldn't have been so bad and i probably wouldnt have bothered so much if it wasnt for the attitude and the fact they had the cheek to charge us for the lasagne. Unfortunately the manger wasnt available to speak to but to all you out there thinkin of going to the mint think again, we are a family of 9 and eat out regularly and have never had an experience like it, we definately wont be going back the mint

Coolio
 It's good, but perhaps over-rated
I agree with most of the previous posts. It can be busy but that's a good sign. The bar staff are easy but that's good if you're a guy. There are no hot men, just a bunch of manky poseurs from Coatbridge or Airdrie who look like footy player wannabes without the money or good looks (or charm). The bouncers are friendly and the food is great. Fab prices and good cheesey music if you just want a fun night. Yes, the function room excellent and beer garden really handy for all those lazy sunny afternoons we have. All in, a good pub but slightly over-rated because there is nowhere else to go within a 5 mile radius except Harry's Bar (which is okay too, sometimes).
I think Big Owen's need to give their barmaids some clothes, they are mostly half naked or wearing completely bizarre (not even just trendy!) gear. The guy that owns it is really friendly and makes an effort to speak to most folk when he can. Cool
Friday, January 30, 2009Rating: rosettes

From Airdrie
 Nice
Have been here a few times for family functions. Good fresh local food and reasonable prices. Conservatory overlooks the loch which is nice in summer and if you can avoid the boy racers or quad bikes on the cycle path, it's a nice walk afterwards. Okay in summer. Still needs a bit of redecorating. Staff could be friendlier but that's just village folk for you!!
Friday, January 30, 2009Rating: rosettes

Not a fan
 Vince is deluded
I think it must be the only place in Airdrie where young neds hang out with old men on the pull, and they all seem to merge into one big alpha male. Hardly any females go there, well unless they are looking for a boy racer or a sugar daddy without the sugar!!! Yes, you have been warned, it's a typical clique of a small town pub. Best of at Big Owen's just down the road or even Harry's Bar where it's more civilised and the folks have made an effort.

 As bad as ever
I can't remember ever planning to end up in the Double A when I have been out with friends, but somehow have managed to quite a lot over the years. The worst of it is if you are off the last train home and still looking for somewhere to go for a couple of drinks, it's just up the road from the train station!!! Note to self, get off at Drumgelloch! It's pure tack. Old men chatting up young lassies who are just about the legal age and old women jumping about as if they are stunning. The place does funny things to you. STAY AWAY

 Fine if you like Celtic
This place has been done up and is more inviting than it was previously, the decor is tasteful but unfortunately, it's the same old celtic neds that hang about it during the weekends. Through the week though they do nice coffee and lunches. V reasonable prices.

 Love it
I have been going to the Mint for lunches, dinners and drinks for as long as I can remember. We always opt for the Mint for large family do's as they are very child friendly and the service is excellent. I have tried everything on the menu more than once and always recommend the place to others. I think it is reasonably priced and the cocktails (especially the Mojito) are freshly mixed. In comparison the Guidi's (seriously overpriced and pretty basic!) , Med Grill (all frozen, cheap food and poor service!) I think the Mint offers a good wide variety of food and caters for all tastes. The decor is nice and relaxing and there is a good ambience about the place. As for the previous comment about cheap cuts of meat. Try paying £11 for a plate of pasta at Guidi's and see if you can work out what justifies the cost, certainly not the canteen style layout, all tables squashed in like sardines, nor is it the service, nor is it the cuts of meat if you are veggie. In comparison, the Mint is not a boring, same old place to go, and I think Coatbridge/Airdrie needs more places like it. I would also say to anyone dining out in Coatbridge to give the Mint a try, you'll find it hard to beat as an all round good eaterie/socialising place to go.

 Reasonable food, not worth expense
I opted to try this restaurant again after a couple of bad experiences over the last few years. I noticed on the last review, basically saying if you want cheaper food then go to a cheaper restaurant.

I don't think myself or other customers would mind paying the prices charged if the food was up to standard. Poor quality meat is used, veg is undercooked and you are lucky if you get your drinks at all.

The chefs need a kick and the staff need a lesson on customer service.

 Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic!
I have a serious intolerance to Gluten. Having book The Mint for a meal with friends, I asked if they catered for this on their menu.

I was advised that they did and that they would rpint off a menu for me arriving. Imagine my surprise that, rather than being given 2 or 3 choices as is usual, I had a choice of 6 starters and 10 mains!

The food was excellent and although a bit pricey, you only get what you pay for. I note that the prices are an issue in a couple of messages but what would you rather have? If you don't like the prices, knowing Coatbridge, there are PLENTY of cheaper establishments who will quite happily served you mediocre food for a cheap price.

I have no problem in commending The Mint to everyone, and especially Coeliac suffers. Excellent food, great ambiance, fantastic service and young, very efficient, friendly, but not intrusive, staff!

 Great wee pub fantastic atmosphere
I haven't been in the shoe for sometime, I have heard that it was a bit of a let down full of idiots on drugs, However my wife and I where out having dinner in dimaddio's and decided to pop in for a drink, The place has changed some and I was welcomed to the bar with a big smile and a genuine happiness. The bar was was quick and got our drinks and we had a nice chat. some of the other patrons weren't the best but I would say the Horseshoe is a great place to go before and after a meal. You get a awarm welcome and a decent priced drink.

 Overpriced!
Reasonably good food for a pub, however, is very overpriced for the cheap cuts of meat used. Agree with previous comment, the steak pie is bland, fatty meat, reheated puff pasty.

Staff were generally friendly although no discounts offerred for poor meal just a replacement.

 Absolutely amazing, delicious!
The staff are ever so lovely, great choice of variety on the menu, the sitting area is lovely in itself , the service was excellent, you weren't waiting too long for your order and it was just overall a very pleasant experience. I'd recommend the Chicken Pakora as a starter, the spicy onions are divine! As my main course, I had the Chicken Ceaser Salad, done in a very 'fresh' dressing. The staff always make sure that during your meals that you're completely satisfied and they would literally bend over backwards just to make sure that your visit there is one of the best you'll ever get when eating out. The price is extremely reasonable as well. A definite favourite place of mine to eat out - and I cannot wait to go back again sometime soon,

Worst Meal I have had in years!
My partner and I eat out about 3-4 times per week. I can't remember the last time, I didn't eat a meal - even if I didn't like that much. I had about 3 mouth fulls of my steak pie dinner before pushing the plate away. The steak was very fatty, the puff pastry wasn't 'puff'. It was stodgy and tasted like it had been reheated quite a few times. The frozen chips (the mint used to serve home made chips years ago) were undercooked and the cooked veg were bland. My partner had the chicken goujouns served with 'smash' mashed potato's. The Chicken was nice. The price of our drinks was refunded off the bill for the inedible dinner that I was served (and had to pay for). This restaurant has gone down hill over the years. I am used to a much higher quality of food and will never go back, whcih is a shame as there aren't many nice restaurants in the area.

probably the best pub in wishae but thats not a compliment just cause the rest of them are pish. full of simple minded celtic fans and 3 bouncers who think they are hard for about 4 days a year when celtic take on the mighty gers in the old firm yes that baldy kid-on boxer ged,the ginger boy who couldnt kick the head off a daffodil and of course mad ryan wit a gimp need i say more very cleekit pub that doesnt offer much at all!

haven't been for a while but seen a pair a numpties masquerading as a band. after midnight they were called. Bloody dreadful - all their music was on a CD and a kid-on guitarist who forgot to plug in!!!!!! What happened to real guitarists? ANd... my girlfriend also got a bloody dirty glass too
Don't know who this tosser is but I've obviously ruffled his feathers somewhere along the line, either that or he's a wannabe guitarist who can't get gigs hence the reason he's out watching us on a saturday night. For the record: After Midnight have been on the go for 8 years now and have an excellent reputation as a pub, club, and function band as any of our customers will happily tell you. We are fully booked for the next 2 years. As for the kid-on guitarist (me) I am a grade 8 classically trained guitarist who also teaches and has an excellent reputation as a guitar teacher, and a steady flow of clients I currently operate 3 guitar schools in Lanarkshire and work extensively for the education authority teaching high school students to higher level. I work as a session player and have played on 2 platinum selling albums so far. I have recently acquired a small recording contract and am in the process of recording my debut album which will be available on June 1st 2007. I am currently also studying under industry professionals such as, Mick Slavin(Deacon Blue), Woody(Bay City Rollers), Alan Rankine(The Associates), Ken McLuskey(The Bluebells), and Dee Bahl(Biffy Clyro management), who are all involved in some capacity in the production of my album. After Midnight are a 2 piece band so yes we do use backing tracks (unless of course you think we should strap some cymbals to our knees, a mouth organ round our necks, and play the keyboards with our dicks). These backing tracks are all recorded and produced by me in my own studio and are therefore very unique. All guitar parts are played 'live' and all vocals are sung 'live'. Our equipment and sound are in my opinion second to none, and anyone who has ever booked us past or present will testify the same. We have a list of references as long as your arm, and at last count 207 thank you letters from companies and newly weds who have used our services. OK Mr. McCrone that's my CV so far (not bad for a kid-on guitarist who forgot to plug in) I assume you will be forwarding yours in due course, it will probably read something like this. J. McCrone - Unemployed tosser/Unemployable musician.
Kind regards
Mark McKeown - After Midnight
For bookings contact aftermidnightmusic@btopenworld.com
PS as for the horseshoe - This was a great pub when Mario owned it and was busting at the seams every time we played it. We stopped playing it about a year ago as it had been taken over and the guy running it started doing private functions as well as live bands at the weekends and the customers who were regularly going to it stopped as they didn't know if they were going to get in or not. Haven't been in it since.

 Excellent
After my 1st visit to this pub i can only sing the praises of the bar staff, especially the female member of staff not sure of name but from the moment i came in made me feel at home, regulars seem to love the double act of skinsy and ricey pure genious. Then comes in casper the friendly ghost lovely big chap. All in all great night rolling on the river with the young man who does karaoke.

 Garfields
The pub is busy, very busy. To busy downstairs for me, but just proves how popular it is. I've started going to the relaunched Garfield nights upstairs. It is not run by Owen's. Not sure who runs it, but it is brilliant that at last there is somewhere you can go where they play great indie music instead of all the dance stuff. The beer garden is excellent also.

 We had to Leave
Whatever happened to live music? Full of second rate cabaret/karaoke acts and singers. I had to leave the last time I was in because the standard of singing drove us out.
Get some good acts in playing some live stuff please.........otherwise though, the pub itself is OK and is nicely decorated etc but sack the entertainments manager!!!

 Live music at the Mint
I'm sorry Mr Stevenson has had an unhappy experience at the Mint and Im sure if he had drawn it to our attention we could have dealt with it at the time. Our customer comment cards consistently show over 95% customer satisfaction, which is a good reflection of our standards. We have never had any comments that customers áre feeling 'ripped off'.

He is also wrong to say we do not have live music as we do have live bands every weekend and they are very popular. He is welcome to come and listen to them any time.

 Not so
Used to be a good pub, but sadly prices are dear in the extreme, quality of food has dropded to JD Weatherspoon standards and now there is no live music. A Coatbridge pub trying to be an upmarket Glasgow restaurant and failing. Interesting to see the owner Mrs Ross trying to justify the fact that people really are feeling ripped off.

The Mint is a great place to eat
In response to the last comment, I think the prices in the Mint are very reasonable and are actually cheaper than most of the comparable place to eat locally (eg Guidi's, Med Grill, Tudor etc). The food is great, the service is very friendly and its just a nice relaxing place to spend an evening.

 QUANTITY, QUALITY AND VERY REASONABLE
Tried lots of times to get in, but had to book in the end - it was packed the night we were in - and it was a Tuesday night! It takes you ages to read the menu - it's so huge and so were the food portions! The food was brilliant - but for me, just a bit too much. I think it's best to share a starter when you go.It's just been renovated and the 2 big Real Fires really makes a warm setting. Definetely worth the visit and it won't be long before I return for the Southern Fried Chicken. Amazing.

 Wrong name
The Barley Bree is now called Carrigans Eating House and as long as the place is quiet, the service can be moderate. As soon as it gets a wee bit busy, the staff are unable to cope and service goes quickly down hill. Food is nothing startling and the locals with their obvious bias towards Celtic make this place a very frightening environment.

My parents run the Butterburn in Hamilton, and i'm a member of staff. I'm proud to say that from having 12 customers on a Friday night when they first started, my parents have turned the pub round completely! It's now a busy, well-loved pub in Hamilton. There's never any trouble and everyone is welcome.

Guest stars also appear on the last Saturday of every month, with a late licence! come along!
