 Simply Brilliant!
We have visited the Bassetts Pole PH many times. Sometimes 2 of us, other times nearly 2 dozen! Every time we've had a friendly welcome, very high quality, well cooked food and good Beer. A VERY popular pub now, it is always busy, yet Chris & Sue and their staff work hard to minimise any delays. Never, ever had cause for complaint....
One of the best pubs in this area.

 panga fish
i and many others feel that you should remove panga fish from your menu. A quick google search entitled do not eat this fish should be more than enough evidence as to why !!!

We have visited the olton Tavern several times recently, having avoided going for a few years. We were welcomed by very pleasant staff, service excellent, the carvery very good and the meals from main menu good too. The choice for this evening was to return which we are looking forward too.

I found my experience at Bassett Pole to be very poor! The waitress was surly and unhelpful. Her long dark hair was practically dragging in my food! I found it very off putting

Had to wait for about 3 minutes before the carvery chef arrived. Meat was cut paper thin and served on cold plates! Yorkshires were rock hard, stuffing was small and also rock hard. Roast spuds were soggy & dripping fat! YUK! Sprouts looked dirty and also rock hard, and no peas or beans available! All in all a terrible meal. I had won this meal in a competition, if we had paid I would have demanded a full refund!

Went back after years of avoiding going due to very bad meals but was surprised at the change had great carvery and veg really good with good variety. Roast mash and new potatoes and cauliflower cheese to die for. We go often and have chosen to go for a birthday celebration in June.

Great locality/surroundings, but reason I visited was for the draught Erdinger - today was told the Erdinger is discontinued BUT two pumps in place of it -both being lager. What a shame.

 disgusted
booked 4 weeks before, appalled at the srevice. waited 1 and a half hours for the starters which were inedible. the breaded mushrooms were like bullets and the prawn cocktail consisted of a few shrimps in the middle of a dinner plate , but it was advertised as atlantic king prawn!! after another 30 minutes our main dishes arrived, mine was cold, my partners was just enough to feed a bird, and my mums was no better. i felt utterly disappointed as it was my mums birthday and nobody seemed to care that the food they were serving was no good. i was not the only one to complain on the night, 3 other people from other parties also complained. i shall never go again and make sure my friends and there families are told to give this place a wide berth.

The Bassets Pole is a Harvester Pub/Restaurant that offers superb food from a varied and interesting menu. The staff are excellent and I would quite happily eat there 7 days on the trot. For a chain pub, the menu offers something for everyone and, with a passion for Pinot Grigio, it is a wonderful choice to have 4 carafe sizes available. I had the Chilli & Garlic Ribs, my girlfriend the Minted Lamb Shoiuder. Both were exceptional and the free salad bar is an excellent Harvester bonus. If you haven't tried The Bassets Pole, do so, you will not be disappointed.

Mrs A Robinson
 Red Lion Earlswood
I feel compelled to write to you after my husband, mother in law and myself visited the Red Lion at Earlswood for lunch on Saturday 24/10/09.It had been some time since we had last visited(but it had always been known for good food/service and atmosphere). It was to be my mother in laws 'treat' (she is almost 84 and enjoys being a ride out to country pubs and restaurants) however once we arrived I think we should have moved on somewhere else. It was very 'tired' looking but worst of all were the state of the 'seat pads' on the dining chairs they were absolutely filthy and stained. I am not talking about 'ageing' this was dreadful. The whole place needed a good clean. The tables were 'sticky' and the cutlery unfortunately was no better( we had to sort thru about 4 before we found any that were 'reasonable' but they had to be wiped on a paper napkin). My husband and I ordered the 'luxury fish pie' it came with green beans which were lovely but I am afraid the carrots were very overcooked and tasteless and the fish pie was very disappointing, the fish was hard ! and there was 1 prawn ! it did not taste very 'luxurious' at all. We were to have had dessert as well but we left and ate that elsewhere. What a shame as the staff were courteous, there was a lovely log fire but my goodness ple4ase step up the cleanliness. I am aware that renovations have to be timed right and are costly, however this is just cleanliness and hygiene. We couldn’t let my mother in law pay as it was so poor and we didn’t like to make a fuss with this wanting to be her treat therefore my husband paid and we moved on to eat dessert in a cleaner environment.

My food order was constantly wrong they even managed to get my drink order wrong - the staff were unfriendly and had a terrible attitude - when asked to see the manager he wasn't helpful or polite at all but rude and unpleasant - other customers were complaining about the rude staff - would never go to the pub again and will tell friends and colleagues of our experience

Used to eat here regularly. My daughter celebrated her 18th here, nine years ago. Have tried eating here quite a few times over the past two years but have always been disapointed. The chef and kitchen staff seem to have no pride in serving good quality, attractive food although the menu always appeals. I had spinach and ricotta raviloi and my partner had sausages and mash. Both were edible but unattractive. Shame - We used to eat there three or four times a month but I wont bother again. we have voiced our opinions several times.

after reading your comments reguarding bassetts pole its a shame you do not speak to the general manager chris who has been at pub for well over nine years and is passionate about his guest if they are realistic about his offerings and not just made up if you follow my drift,no quibble guarentee is in place we shall replace any meal which is not upto our standard food issues should not be a complaint moan or groan just a chance their and then for us to recify

 Poor Quality Food
Visited pub recently, and took a colleague. The quality and portions of food were really poor. My chilli consisted of two teaspoons of chilli flavoured sauce with hard rice and my colleagues £9.00 Ceasar Salad was tiny, consisting of a few lettuce leaves and inedible crutons. We waited over an hour for our meal. The waitress was very helpful, but when we complained about the food - or lack of it! - we were told that all portions are controlled centrally! My bill was £25, and we were still hungry! Will never eat here again, or recommend it!

2 very poor quality meals,
Shocking quality seafood platter.
7 tiny pieces of indescribable reformed blandness.
Accompanied by a mound of tasteless peas.

Not one to usually complain but had to comment, met by dismissive attitudewhen suggested that this in no way constituted a seafood platter 'thats what our supplier thinks it is'
Carry on down the canal!

Thursday 7th August 2008
Waitresses very friendly. Had long waits for food to arrive. Even longer wait for desserts to arrive when asked why was told that they only had one chef on. Shame they did not think to tell us so that we could have made our own decision. Food was good except the “Eton Mess” which was a mess put on a plate which was warm rather than into a glass and chilled in the fridge and no meringue of any significance. Waitresses worked very hard as there was only two of them for such a large restaurant. We were a party of 10.

Thursday 31st July Bassets Pole.

Table was very sticky, & not clean, had to ask for it to be cleaned before we ate.

Smoked Haddock fish cake on salad served on a hot plate meant that the salad was 'cooked' & inedible. Salad would be better served separately in a side bowl.

Waitress did not mention nectar points available when she brought the bill , she said they didn't have to, Why not when you offer that facility!

 Food mediocre, service appalling
Had to clean own table, request more cutlery as not enough was given for the number of meals ordered. The cutlery that was given was just put in a pile on the table, not put out. Had to collect own sauces. Empty plates were left on the table for twenty minutes, then ten more after we requested someone to clear them away. Apart from one waitress who was friendly, the others were far more interested in talking with their friends who arrived after us, but who were served first.

 dissapointed
my family and i went to the olton tavern for a family lunch yesterday and we were very dissapointed. we had to wait nearly an hour for meat that they should have anticipated that they would need. when we finally went to get our food there was lamb or beef no third choice however 10 mins after we sat down a turkey appeared which if they had told us we would have waited for as my children prefer white meat. the vegetables were cold and the caulifour cheese was a congeled blob. when were were approached to ask if our meals were ok i pointed out that i was less than satisfied and instead on an apology a red raced waitress scuttled off and ignored us for the rest of our stay. i would normally have left after such service but after such a long wait my children were about fit to eat the table in front of them, so we sat it out. I was really shocked as this used to be one of my favorite restraunts i shall not be returning.

 canalside catastrophe!
one fine day last June, i thought hooray - summershere, fancy the Heron's Nest dear?, i enquired of my long suffering wife. abso-bloomin-lutely was her reply, not suprising as the food and service had always been wonderfull. Alas, all was not well, the charming and friendly staff of the previous summer had been replaced....Now i'm all for change, but the new manager reminded me of one of those small dogs that are bred by chavs for fighting, in liverpool or manchester. He was rude, aloof and somewhat aggressive, i often find this with small people. Needless to say our favourite summertime eatery is no more...our search shall take us elsewhere to re-discover the kind of attention to detail that used to make the Nest such a joy to visit.

 shocking
you get what you pay for, cheap food as its an appalingly prepared microwave meal that you wouldn't serve to a dog. Cheap beer as it's served by young girls with an appalling attitude, who as they believe they are important talk to you like a nursery school child. Customer service is obviously not a priority in this establishment would definitely recommend not visiting here.

 Try us again...
This pub has a great atmosphere and we try and ensure you have a good night, our bar & floor staff have personalities and our chefs produce great 'specials' alongside our regular menu.

If you are barred from here you are barred for life.

This pub can be a great place to socialise on your own, with friends or with family, so why not try us.

I moved in here on the 16th October 2006 and although we have had a couple of incidents I will do my ut most to ensure once you visit us you will keep on coming back.

 Refurbishment
I visited The Olton Tavern Yesterday, the first day of opening since its refurbishment by new owners Orchid Pubs ltd.
I was dissapointed at the grey exterior of the building, and dismayed to discover that this colour scheme had also been carried throughtout the interior.
The dining/carvery area looks very impressive and well presented and I hope that the quality of food on offer lives up to its surroundings.
I chose to spend my evening in the bar area. As a long time user of the Olton, I was very dissapointed to discover that a lot of the 'local' atmosphere has dissapeared. Although, this may just be down to opening night. The company appear to have put the emphasis on attracting diners, but forgotten about the 'bread and butter' drinkers that have frequented The Olton since it's opening in the 30's. After speaking to some of the familiar faces behind the bar, I discovered that there are calculated moves on behalf of the company to discourage the under 35's from frequenting the establishment, and that there is also an overriding opinion that the pub/rest is not designed for those just wishing to 'pop in for a pint' after work or for a social evening with friends.
I for one, am very sad to see the end of what used to be a friendly welcoming 'local' Once again, the emphasis is on getting people in, getting as much cash from them, and getting rid as soon as possible. Gone are the days of the 'rovers return' type public house, and I believe that in time, those tv pubs will just be a quant reminder of what used to be, when the 'local' was the centre of the community.

 stinks of cigarettes
And on to the latest venue, the Masons Arms in High Street, Solihull. Which has been expanded to a huge venue with room after giant room all the way back to the garden . . . and a tiny alcove with two tiny tables reserved for nonsmokers. Which is no use at all since the alcove is surrounded by a smoking area and there's no ventilation.
Our meal would have been good value except for some arsehole smoker who despite the almost empty room chose to sit next to us just to exercise his right to inflict his filthy habit on us.
