 Excellent pub
After a brief closure following the departure of Jane, the Butt of Ale has re-opened under new management. I have to say the food, and service, far surpasses previous meals that I have had at the pub. We have been there several times and when we walk in and we are shown to our table, orders for food and drinks are taken in an extremely professional yet friendly manner.

Whether you decide to visit the pub for a quick drink, a few drinks or a nice meal the atmosphere is always welcoming - with nice music and a smile to greet you from behind the bar. They seem to stock a wide range of drinks, including several ales (I would personally recommend a nice pint of Doombar).

We were there on the Sunday that Mrs Brosnan visited the pub and being regulars at the pub, we were not expecting to see Paul's carvery as he left approximately two months ago. Admittedly there were a couple issues on that day, but both the starter (garlic breaded mushrooms) and the dessert (New York vanilla cheesecake) that I had were fantastic. Multiple visits to the pub since and raving reviews from other regulars have proved that any problems on that Sunday were minor hiccups and a onetime thing; and certainly do not bear any resemblance to how things have been since or a sign of things to come.

I rather think the comment from Mrs Brosnan (even basic standards of wiping down the windows ledge free from a variety of insects!) is rather harsh, extremely exaggerated and to be taken with a pinch of salt as all aspects of the pub seem to be kept up to a high standard of cleanliness and you can even see your face in the brass at the bar!!

The new management seem to be doing a brilliant job, with steak night on Tuesdays, quiz night on Wednesdays and the roast on Sundays - and with promises of more to come as word spreads of this brilliant pub I think it might be advisble to book for meals.

Good luck Alex and Rich - see you for many more meals in the future!

We went up on sunday too,,luckily enough we weren't expecting to see Paul or his carvery as they went over a month ago.The pub did close its doors for a short while but is now under new management..In ALL fairness Sunday could have ran a bit smoother, all six of us had a 3 course meal, whilst we did have timing problems between courses these were forgot after a few beers. We have been back on monday for lunch and tuesday for the steak night,,with no complaints. We will all be going back again and have no problem in recommending them to anyone...they are very accommodating see you wednesday for quiz night....

Very dissapointing visit, we where expecting our usual fabulous carvery from chef paul, only to find out that the pub has changed hands,,,,,,so ok, lets give it a try.
Fairly busy as we walked in, good sign, ordered drinks @ the bar, issues with the barrel, ok, happens,....seated @ our table, waitress takes order by writing on palm of hand!!....ok.....starter arrives, to our horror looks like & tastes like iceland food!!! (& no cajun dip in sight as discribed just a dish of mayo?)...50 minutes later still no main course.... & people whom i thought had eaten theirs , food was just arriving! & parties of people around us not getting their food all @ the same time.
We decided to pay & leave , & forgo the pork roast as the couple next to us had beening waiting 1hour 20 minutes for not even a sniff of food!....... I got the feeling the new management really had no idea what great food & great customer service means! & even basic standards of wiping down the windows ledge free from a variety of insects! i wish them good luck, & i very much doubt they will last very long in this establishment.

Had a cracking Sunday carvery and our son had the best sausages and chips I've seen in a pub (proper high percentage meat bangers). Excellent value - only 8 for the carvery and chef has not missed his calling - a master craftsman of food! Will definitely be returning now we've found this place.

 Food is fantastic
Savoy trained Paul really does the business. He does the best Sunday Carvery in town! His theme nights on a Tuesday are to die for....having tried Mexican, Oriental, Italian and Asian my favourite is Thai!

 Open Again!
The Butt of Ale has opened again and I have to say that the food is wonderful! The partition is back so you should not be bothered by unruly people while you enjoy your meal and the new Landlord is charming and very professional. You can be sure of a warm welcome...by the way if you want to book a meal the telephone number is now 01722 411339. Meals are currently available Thursday to Sunday at lunchtimes but evening meals will be starting soon.

Great views, beer, food and staff
An excellent old pub, wonderfully quirky and 14thC with lots of nooks and crannies.
Excellent large, well laid out pretty garden with views of the cathedral.
Food good and reasonably priced, staff smiling and helpful, good Badger beers and fair wine list, Worth a visit.

 excellent
wonderful old building (14th century being the oldest part of the pub), with fantastic helpful cheerful staff and lovely new landlord/landlady who took over this year. The food remains as good as ever, with decent value for money (average main meal around 8-9 on the evening menu). Occasional entertainment being the new change to an old favourite.

 Very poor
a huge dissapointment . Sunday lunch - prawn starter; five flies on my salad...waitress said 'ok' when I told her...prawns though heaped on were tasteless, watery (like badly defrosted frozen prawns) Pork roast was flacid and bland...roast pots were like hard boiled potatoes covered in oil, cold and pale. Veg, very overcooked and tasteless. Dessert portion was so tiny....4 dessert spoons at most. Sorry but a huge let down for a special family gathering. Shame as our familly bbq there in Summber 2006 was very nice.

Hilly Question
 What happened!!
We were passing this pub last year and had to stop as the pub was open for food even though they had a birthday on, allowing for the noise, they seated us in the snug out of the way, they still offered a great bar-ba-cue all you could eat for 4.95. They made us feel so at home. Gareth seemed to have quite a voice on him. Seems a shame that thay have changed hands

 not good
very friendly locals, pity about the landlord he cant want anyone in his pub with his attitude it seems to me, I saw him fly into the toilet and get a poor man out just because he never got a drink first, and by the taste of it I think he came off the better of the two of us, think he needs to learn how to keep beer and clean his pipes.

Real Ale Local pub. No food, just excellent beer
Has been run by Joe Morris for nearly twenty years. It is a true Free House. A small corner pub with no food, just bar nibbles, it emanates the true spirit of a 'local'.
Joe keeps a superb cellar and always has a fine selection of beers on tap as well as cider and lagers. No car park and smoking is allowed in all areas. A small cellar bar is available for functions. The toilets aren't pretty- but they work.
CAMRA have awarded this pub 'Pub of the Year' status several times and it is regularly in the Good Beer Guide.

 Bloody lovely!
The Railway Inn has recently been taken over by new owners, Ken and Vee. They have completely transformed the pub, making it a desirable place to drink. It is both cosy and welcoming - and I would highly recommend that you take the time to pay them a visit!

 Excellent restaurant
This pub is my local. It looks nothing from the outside, but inside it is friendly, with a selection of real ales. The food is excellent, served in either the restaurant (non-smoking), the bar or the fuction room. But beware, it is well known locally and you would be better to book.

The Swan is a mobile phone free zone, so please be prepared to switch off when you enter!
