 Poor Pub
On the slim occasions we have been to the flag for a meal we have allways had something to complain about. The 2 occasions that stick out. Birthday meal, we all had steak all cooked the same. the meals arrive and mine is rare not well done like the others. by the time it arrives back the others have long finished. Not happy
The other occasion, a wake. food was ordered for 12 which turned out to be 2 plates of plain cheese sandwiches and 2 plates of ham. some salad put inthe middle and 2 cakes sliced and put on a plate. about a tenners, if that, worth of food and half hour to perpare. The staff where rude and the bill came to 70. Really.
Looking at the posts and the age of them it seems the pub has slowly gone down hill and still in 2012 it hasnt improved.
If you want quality in Brackley then head for the Red Lion or the Greyhound.

 Fine Ale - Great food
Ye Golden lLion has been the finest food/ale venue in Wellingborough ever since Eric took over some three years ago. Given prior warning he can provide any meal you may desire and does so with a style and humour which puts many other landlords to shame. Long may he reign!

Lovely looking outside - Awful awful food.
Monday 30th August 2010 (Bank Hol)
We stopped thinking we'd get a good hearty quality pub lunch but oh dear oh dear oh dear - what we got was overpriced rubbish.

We both went for cheeseburgers and they tasted like they were from a bad funfair burger van with undercooked oven chips and peas. How can you do such a simple pub meal so so badly? We ate a little and left. Neither of us had the energy to complain as we were on our way back from a weekend away.
The barmaid was friendly enough and the food clearly wasn't her fault.
One of the worst meals ever.

the open hearth has been taking over, the lounge has been re-decorated and its starting to get its good name back the disco's are good just waiting on the bands coming back in

12 of us attended a birthday celebration lunch on Friday, 20th August. The meal was far and away above our expectations. My partner thought it was the best steak he had ever tasted. There was also another large party celebration taking place at the same time which didn't phase the staff at all and our service was outstanding. Thank You.

 Eric on form again
Sorry it has taken so long to update on our meal - it was fantastic as usual.

He also laid on great bar snacks (mini beef wellingtons anyone?) for Pete's visit last Sunday.

 well looked after beer
This is not only one of the few remaing real pubs remaining open in the area, but the quality of the ale and food on offer is outstanding. There is a real local atmosphere and Eric the landlord and his staff do their level best to please all the time

Mrs Pashler must have gone to a different pub!!
Eric's food is wonderful - I have never had a bad meal and I have been eating there since he took over in April 2009.

I am looking forward to the meal he is cooking for us tomorrow.

Yesterday we come here for a meal, but oh dear, the meal was so poor it was not its money worth. the food was bland. Who ever done the meal ought to go training on how to cook.

 Not recommended
We've been to the flag a few times to meet friends. On a few occasions we've eaten there and it never gets any better... the food is awful. They can't even make gravy for goodness sake. The guest ale's are ok but nothing inspiring. I wouldn't recommend visiting.

I was disgusted with your standard of service when visiting your establishment on Thursday 3rd July. I waited 45 minsfor food, people who came in 30 mins after me were served before me.No apologies from staff were offered so I left having got my money back. I had not been to you pub for some time as I had experienced poor food and service before. I THINK ITS TIME YOU TOOK A LOOK AT STAFF TRAINING IN CUSTOMER RELATIONS AND SERVICE.

 Great place!
Having been renovated to a high standard a year ago, the Axe is well worth a visit, either for a meal in the restaurant, a bar snack, or just a drink. Good food & friendly service whenever I go. One thing, it reads as though this pub is in Kettering, but it is actually in Ringstead, near Thrapston! Tim A.

I can assure you I am not related to the management! Rather, I just felt moved to write a review of my positive experience, after reading a run of bad reports that could easily have put me off going back. I, in turn, could be equally suspicious that these are being written by people (competitors?!) that have it in for this pub! Anyway, someone should alert the management to this website, as it sounds like people are having very mixed experiences here. If I go back and am not satisfied, I shall let you know! Thanks, Tim.

 Very nice as usual!
I have enjoyed several nice meals at this pub in the past, so was concerned to read a few recent reviews that are very negative. They could have put me off going back, but I'm glad they didn't! We had a great bar snack last Saturday, the staff were all friendly, and nothing is too much trouble. The food (and beer) was of a high standard, the menu is varied and the portions good. There are two 'snugs' to sit out of the way of the main part of the pub, to have drinks or wait for a table, so I don't really know what the last few reviews are on about?! Will be going again soon.
Wednesday, January 24, 2007Rating: rosettes

We were lookinfg forward to eating here as the pub is usually fully booked. It was a busy Saturday night but we felt rushed from the start and as all the pub is geared to dining there was nowhere to enjoy a drink before our meal and after several requests from the rather scary waitress we agreed to go to our table.
The food seemed expensive for what it was. Band soup, very little choice for the vegetarian/fish eater in our group, un-imaginative vegetables, for which you paid extra and over -elaborate puds. The one we sampled was dry. We had to ask for a wine list, even for the table candle to be lit and the waitress seemed put out at our request to keep our bread after the first course!
As one of your other comments states just not a particularly pleasant dining experience.

 Traditional English Pub
A beautiful pub in a beautiful village. The curry alone is enough to keep you coming back and they always have a wide selection of real ales. Great value for money and friendly service. Everything you want in a pub. (I loved the fireplace.)

 A definite must
A true traditional English pub, with great food & excellent service. The Overstone Arms is set in a beautifull village where good food & value for money collaborates! For the wine lover they have a wide selection of red & white wines. I will certainly be back.

Dissatisfied customers
Food was good, eventhough we had to ask for vegetables which arrived lukewarm ten minutes after the main course. Unfortunately, waitresses were surly and hovered, waiting to whisk away plates and glasses virtually before they were empty. To top it all, the manager tapped his watch and inforjmed us that our time was up (we were not told on booking that our party of 19 had just an hour to eat) before removing us from the tables. Not a pleasant dining experience.

The once great family/locals pub has been run into the ground by the new tenants.
Everything is overpriced(1 for crisps,ha!) food when the landlady can be bothered or capable. But there is some good news. They are leaving(before the 1 year probation) and it will hopefully return to normal. A friendly pub with good beer and decent bar meals at reasonable prices.

 bar meals
We visited this pup last saturday and we were disappointed that we had not been told on booking that the only menu on a saturday was the a la carte. Good value for the dining room but a little over priced when you are sitting in the bar amongst the drinkers. The food was good but it did lack the options of some potato of some sort with the Lamb Shank. Please when taking bookings make sure to say the option of bar food is not available week-ends and the those out for a bar snack are not shacked by having to pay a la carte prices if we had not booked the table we would have walked away

 Great Food, Great Value
A regular visitor to the Samuel Pepys, I and friends always find the food very good and extremely good value compared to other local competition. My only criticism is that they seem to struggle with larger tables (8+). Must ensure menu rotation!

You don't get served in this pub especially on Fri and Sat nights, which is...urrr....very strange and down right rude. Its not just a one-off experience either. Very arrogant staff. We'll certainly be giving this one a miss from now on and we recommend you do too.

 Cosy country pub
It's nice to find a pub which has been refurbished recently, but still retains it's own character. The new owners have been very sympathetic in their improvements to this old pub and have many interesting old photos and information about the history. The choice and quality on the menu is excellent as are the real ales available. A warm and friendly welcome also from the hosts.

 Not recommended - stay clear
On the handful of occassions I have visited in the last couple of years, I have had bad experiences. Today I was served a cloudy pint of Pedigree (not for the first time), and I had to settle for an inferior pint of Mansfield smooth (suprisingly at the same premium beer price). If you want a full pint, you need to ask for a top up.

The Fish & Chip meal at 2.99 seemed appealing, however, the battered bit of cardboard served was overpriced.

I have no intentions of returning there in the future unless I am obliged to join friends or relatives

Thatched stone building in pretty village
A proper village pub, with good draft beer along with excellent realistically priced food. Great walks in the nearby Titchmarch Woods and Nation Trust property Lyveden New Bield. Open fires, friendly and genuine local country folk. Hardworking family run business. Good for kids. One of the few local pubs I really enjoy other than the excellent, albeit upmarket, Pheasant Inn at Keyston nearby.

 A Proper Pub!
Bar skittles, excellent Real Ales which change on a weekly basis, ( usually 5 on for weekends). Paper rack/ copper counter, a publican that obviously cares about what he does. If you idea of a pub is a mircowave food producing, smooth beer selling, humdrum, children friendly, anti conversation, big screen tv, football watching clientelle served by some gormless slack jawed teenager who dont really care if you come in or not....... then stay out.  Up there with the best.
I have to say being a scotts man, i know my drink and the chequered flag was a great pub to drink plenty. I was so impressed with it i even took my new american friends for dinner there and the food was excellent. Entertainment in the pub is very good, especially the resident Man Utd fan, a lad called scott evans, who is shall we say proud to wear the red of utd everywhere he goes! Whenever im in the area i always pop in for a swift whiskey and will continue to do so. Keep up the good work guys you are a premier pub!
Friday, July 22, 2005Rating: rosettes

Scott evans dragged me there for a full weekend where we drank..a lot. Nice pub and very friendly atmosphere, food was yummy too. Scott is apparently the darts champion but i dont believe him cos i have never seen him play...he drinks too much.

I've been going to this pub ever since my friend moved to the area! I find the pub a really friendly place to drink with outstanding food there aswell. Plenty of space to take my kids and partner to with no worries about the kids getting knocked over! What can i say?! great food, great booze, great entertainment...GREAT PUB. The flag caters for all, families etc, and the pub is complimented by all its visitors, even some from the far away land of manchester.  Not bad, not bad!
I consider the Chequered Flag to be my local even though i reside from Middleton Cheney, where there is 3 pubs. The Flag has a great atmosphere with an enourmous amount to do for all the family apart from drink!! Kids are catered for and there is a pool table and dart board which has certainly improved things. Food is excellent and the menu has a great choice. the pub is spacious, clean and tidy. It makes for an enjoyable evening out.

A bucket of entertainment for the whole family.
I have not long lived in the area of Brackley but being male have visit many pubs. On visiting the Flag a number of impressions were evident firstly the size, how clean it is, the friendly atmosphere and on the whole how much people were enjoying them selves children and kids. The ale is good and the facilities are excellent with the recent addition of games facilities, I would recommend the Flag to anybody i think this is a wonderful, enjoyable pub.

 Friendly & Clean
I have been visiting Brackley on and off for the last 4 years and whenever i go out, i always go to the chequers. They have recently had new tables with heat lamps fitted outside, got a new dart board and pool table, the management & staff are friendly every time i go in. Admittedly i have not tried the food (Prefer Italian) but the food side always seems to be busy.
I would recommend this pub to anyone who visits Brackley.

The Chequers has been renamed 'Around Town' and refitted in a 'bar' style, it a W-Fi hotspot. It's a very chilled out bar that's a good place for a quiet drink. NB. It's very multi-cultural with no dominant culture.. foreign people seem to feel at home there

I experienced a most splendid evening as both the food and the staff where assets to the tanditional pub restaurant that is scarce enjoyable in Britain. The waiting staff seemed guinely happy to be serving and coped tremenously with a full restaurant. The food was of a higher standard than i have tasted in a long time and the overall atmosphere was pleasing to me and my grandchild who was included well by all members of staff

 Typical estate pub
Children are allowed to run around outside of restricted areas inside the pub. The brewery tries to maintain the appearance, but landlord allows glasses and bottles to remain on outside tables overnight. Teenagers are encouraged to use outside area and leave mess about the place which doesn't get cleared up for a few days. Not a great experience. Try Brackley's more traditional pubs for a relaxing, more enjoyable drink.
