Another local pub gone to the dogs
This used to be a great local pub, families and dogs welcome but alas no more 😢
It used to be a summer favourite as it's the only local pub with a garden but no longer.
Greeted by a very unfriendly bar man refusing a family with a disabled grandad in tow entry when the only sign said children under 12 not allowed after 7:30 in the bar.
My dog is well behaved, My daughter is 13 and my dad had struggled to get there, we weren't even going to sit in the bar, we were heading straight to the garden but it wasn't worth an argument.
Local pubs struggle for business but with the attitude in this pub you can clearly see why. Pity it changed so much, maybe new management but it's a place we won't go again.

This was my home and my big families in 1976 we were there for the silver jubilee ,my nan and grandad lived with us too Kathy and Gill my nans claim to fame still remains with our family that we were holidaying in Spain my mum Kathy and stepdad Alf Jarvis whobwere the licencees and Richard Burton and James Hunts ex wife turned up , my nan cooked them a big fry up breakfast we still talk about it ! Jack Warner from Dixon of Dock green and his wife were regulars and Peter Camplin The Sun newspaper racing tipster which was handy for my stepdad who was a bookmaker at Romford and Crayford Dogs and Chatham dog track when it was open,we had the black taxis often popping in too with disabled children heading to Margate with them,we had a big motorbike disco I remember in our hall at the back one night with which a big fight broke out we really laugh at this to this day ! My stepdad running up the hall with a beer barrel over his head and my uncle Billy shouting ' is that full Alf to which he answered 'I'm not f....ING samson my grandad who used to be a boxer was fighting with everyone it was hilarious when we look back ,my uncle Jack Brown took over when we left and i believe had it right up to it closing so we moved back to the medway towns as we took over Gillingham golf club and also had a pig farm at Hempstead Gillingham ,I could go on and on about different things that happened at the galley the ghost stories are unreal what happened to us we laugh and laugh but it wasn't funny at the time tho my getting locked out her bedroom alsorts went on ! Unfortunately when Den died the brewery sold off the premises so it is no longer a pub, it is now an indian restaurant and has been for years. I used to live across the road and drank in there during the late 90's as I dated and married one of his granddaughters. It had a very warm friendly feel to it.

 Traditional pub turned modern!
Nice pub, with excellent staff. Good food, generally of good value, (desserts a bit pricey) Good atmosphere. Quiz on Thursday & Sunday which are both enjoyable.

 Service? I'LL Say!
We lived next door to this pub 1970-72. I always collected half a pint of DD from Denis, the landlord around nine pm and took the jar back the next night.
Ten years later we were back in the UK and I walked into the pub. Denis greeted me as always with:
Hello Sir, the usual? which arrived immediately. A half pint of DD. Now THAT'S service!!!

Mothers day, arrived with the family age ranging 10 weeks to 70, table booked for 4oclock, food smelt lovely and were all looking forward to it, only to find they were running a little late 20 minutes turned into 2hours by that time the mums are pissed off, the kids a moaning, finally get a table, cant move all squashed in, complete mission if any1 wanted the loo, starters arrived which were a disgrace a sppon full of prawns and half a slice of bread butter does not make a prawn coctail and a lump of pate and two cream crackers is just not acceptable, the onion soup was like bisto sprinked with onion and when we finally got a spoon to eat it with it wasnt too bad, bread roll was burnt! At least another hour later we are finally allowed to get a dinner which consisted of frozen roast spuds, fatty meat, overcookd veg, and crap yorkshire puds, all this ment it was not all enjoyable, was not a treat, i felt the manager tried to squeeze as many people in there as possible, money grabing and greedy spring too mind, will never return, regards

 Great family pub
Perfect place to have a very good meal or just a snack .... Or just a good pint or coffee. Staff always friendly..... Love the open fire on a chilly day & enjoy both gardens in the summer.... Our dog is always made very welcome after a long walk in the meadows at rear of the pub .... As they now accept credit cards we can visit more often- tho we usually there once or twice a week!.... Very large car park.... no tv or load music....

Just been in the George and Dragon pub, recently reopened and it is the best that I have ever known it to be. It has a really great selection of real ales and a good selection of lagers, good decor and a big welcome from the landlord & landlady.

It really needs to be visited for you to see how good it is, warm friendly atmosphere, all round good pub.
Sunday, January 29, 2012Rating: rosettes

Friendly and welcoming, a must visit
After visiting the George and dragon for the first time I couldn't believe a newly opened establishment could have such a wide variety of real ales on offer combined with a friendly owner who made you feel you was sitting in your own home. Obviously I had to go again to see if this place was for real. It is. You have to see it and feel it to believe it. Will hopefully meet you there as it is definitely the place to go for a good drink, great company oh and a game of jenga!!!

Friendly - best pub in miles!!!
Dropped in here today, right next to Ebbsfleet international station- for the Olympics & also a stress free commute to France via Eurostar - unfortunately the owners have recently purchased the pub & no accommodation available yet due to a re-fit - if u fancy a drink & good old fashioned atmosphere, beer, bar maid was fantastic, Open fires & old board games - it's a fab pub that is extremely reasonable in price! A*

If this been turned into appartments it's a shame. S> Maughan writer stayed here.I have included the site in Atlas of British writers to be published. If it has been defaced I'll not include a photo.I have seen this happen so often in GB. No pride in past associations? Dr David Ford, Canada.

Expensive for a second rate PH
Looks a picture but venture inside & you'll discover tired rural decor that was once possibly pleasant. The only attraction in the evening is an average large screen TV. The drinks are at club prices, 2.80 for a pint of bar pump lemonade & 3.70 for the ubiquitous Amstel lager! Go there on a Tuesday and the eating area will be full of darts players and the bar area graced with foul-mouthed locals watching the football. They no longer serve meals. The men's toilets are unpleasant and grubby.
Cannot recommend this pub at any level.

wedding party double booked with a wake.
We arrived at the STAR INN for our 80 yr old mothers wedding reception, to find that tony the new owner of the star inn, had double booked our day with a wake party. The atmosphere was terrible between the 2 parties. &was totally inaproprate & unaxeptable for either party to have to go through on those types of family occations.
This is now something our mother has to remember of her wedding day & visaverse for them on the death of they'er 82 yr old father. we was led to believe that we would have the use of the whole venue for our soul purpose & the pub would be closed to other public. i feel this was totally disrespectful of the new ower, & a disgrace.. completely wrong on so many levels, & he upset a fair number of people that day with his money grabbing disitions. he will be made aware of this. & the fact we will not be spending another penny in the place.

 Only Fools... location
You're right JayCee.
I just checked the PO code out on GoogleMaps.co.uk and it takes you to a patch on the West. Pull satellite map along to Brook Lane on East side, go to ground level and there it is, minus 'Roman Galley' pub sign seen on Jolly Boys Outing episode of Only Fools & Horses.
I took ground level photos from the screen but nowhere to put them in Best Pubs comment box.

Fab pub give it a try
This place used to be a crummy, tired pub. Now newly refurbished with a great Manager, it really is the place to go. There is something for everybody - good beer, entertainment friday and saturday and a great beer garden with regular activities there. I hear there is play equipment for families coming soon also.
It is really great for a quick pint, girls night out or a family event.

 lovely warm welcoming pub
really nice warm welcoming pub!veru clean with nice decor.staff and management are really friendly and helpful.service is efficent and very helpful with great tasting beers, lager wines etc very friendly and great family pub.they also have a wide variety of music at weekends, that has to finish by 12pm which is unfortunate but the licensee has great consideration for the resisdents of the area and repects their needs.myself and my family come to this pub at least three times a month and we wlways have an excellent night with a lovely warm experience.
Friday, July 24, 2009Rating: rosettes

This place has absolutely no regard for it neighbours - loud live music at earsplitting levels, bypassing noise limiters, doors wide open, and I can't get to sleep for the racket - 12.30 at night and a music licence only until midnight at the most.

gushing about the g and d
one visited the george and dragon this fine day and found it to be a most fabulous drinking emporium. The decor was modern and imaginative, the drink selection seemingly endless, the clientele sharp and witty and the landlady a real star - 11 out of 10 - I don't think I've ever seen such opulence with style for a long time.

 End of beano?
The closure of the Roman Galley seems to have ended the post war social phenomenon of the beano. The days when coachloads of friends and workmates would descend on Margate for a fun day out look as though they have ended with the closing of this pub. The Galley was the last of about half a dozen big pubs that once lined the road from London to Margate. There is now no focal point for coach parties on route to Margate and the return journey. It is a great shame if indeed it is the end of the beano to Margate. Is there another pub in the area that caters for the beano revellers? Have others in the last few weeks experienced the same lack of a place to meet up?

 up and coming
The Bickley Arms has re-gained it's wonderful atmosphere over the last few months after the change in name back to it's original. the world cup promo's are second to none and the general feeling of an uplift has made itself known. This is the worse pub I have ever been to. Don't get me wrong the pub itself is lovely and the views are fantastic, However the guy that runs it is absolutley terrible.
