Mrs S Payne Good food. Good chips.
A group of five ladies ladies had lunch here on Monday 1st October 2012. We had 2 BLT's on granary and 3 ciabattas and chips all round. We all agreed on how much we enjoyed the food. A small complaint in that the eight unused glasses were not removed, so we had about 13 glasses on the table. Naughty.

Such good food! I had the steak ale and stilton pie (which I'd had before) and it was gorgeous, 2 of our party had the oxtail with dumplings, and the fourth had the steak. We all agreed it was superb. The staff were charming - don't expect your food in a hurry - it's not that sort of place. If you want good, home-cooked, good value food, then this is the place for you.

Very dissapointed with this pub. The staff are very rude. Ordered a sunday roast for five and waited one and a half hours to be told they had run out of beef. The portion and quality of the food was disgusting bearing in mind it totalled £50. Would never go here again and have advised family and friends not to bother also.

This is a very popular and friendly pub in Steyning. It is a real hive of activity with a rugby team; cricket team and the Norfolk Walking Group. There are also regular quizzes and other social events. A real locals pub - the kind of pub you thought doesn't exist anymore. You are guaranteed to strike up a conversation over good beer. Food is not served, but who cares. If you like beer and banter - give it a go.

My parents and I went to the George and Dragon at Amberly, what a beautiful location but unfortunately the food did not come up to the view. The potatoes were cold, the meat was so hard that it had obviously been cooked for ages and then warmed up. When I complained the waitress offered to put warm gravy on the roast!!!! I hasten to add we walked out at no charge.

My husband, daughter and I arrived on a busy Sunday lunchtime, not having booked a tabke, but the landlady welcomed us and squeezed us into a little nook by the bar, The menu looked good, and had three vegetarian choices - an absolute must as my daughter and I are veggies. The food arrived without too long a wait, and did not disappoint: tasty, piping hot and good sized portions. we enjoyed it so much we have booked a table for late December for a birthday celebration.

We run a walking group ‘The Pub Appreciation Walk Society’ (PAWS) The principle is we meet at a selected pub, have an 8 mile walk and then lunch at the pub. We chose the Welldiggers for one of the PAWS walks. We booked for 18 walkers, they made an error and put 12 in the reservation book. It turned out we were both wrong and 27 turned up. Tuppy, unflustered, took it all in her stride. Not only were they able to cater for us all, but the service was excellent, the food was top grade, especially the roast beef which was the best I’ve ever had. We have found some excellent pubs, but the Welldiggers was outstanding.

Michelle Sewry Extreme Disappointment
My family 5 adults & 4 children dined at The George on evening of Sunday 18th Feb `07 hoping to feast on a carvery meal. Having enjoyed drinks at the bar, eaten our starters, we approached the carvary with anticipation, hopeing to see large juicy joints of meat and sumptuous dishes of seasonal vegetables....what we found was an almost bear turkey carcuss, fatty gammon joint and a shrivelled piece of beef, misable dishes containing cubed swede, frozen peas, cauilflower cheese and soggy roast potatoes. I asked was that all the vegetables that were available... No corrots, broccolli or sweetcorn ? Was told that they had run out of carrots & sweetcorn at around 5pm Four disappointed children walked away from the carvary with meager plates containing turkey, yorkshires, potatoes and gravy, no vegetable favourites available, five adults disppointed with choices available. We came here for a treat, but left wishing that we had cooked ourselves.

The Pub nor the landlord have changed for ages. Used to go there years ago before we moved to America when it had good food. Came back after 23 years and nothing changed. Still Old Ted there proping up the bar and still the onion soup as good as ever. What you see is what you get, a great traditional old English pub, mainly for locals. If you dont like tradition then go to a fancy smancy new age pub. I happen to love it there and thank god that it will never change all the while Ted is there, Oh, and the food is still great and plenty of it.

We went to eat last Sunday on the 21/01/07 and to say that we were disappointed about the food is an under-statement. Atmosphere not too bad, menu looked hopeful because it had a limited number of classic dishes. However when we ordered the Sunday roast it took half an hour to arrive then we were served with two wafer thin over-cooked slices of beef, the gravy was pale hot water, most of the vegetables were burnt with cauliflower served aside smothered in cheese sauce and drowned in a lake of water underneath. All these goodies for a mere £ 13.95 each. Funnily enough I found good reviews about this place - could it possibly be the same place ?

last was at this place three months ago and had avery unhappy time. returned this weekend to find a new menu and a new chef, jason reeves, and my god you can notice the change, starters were mind blowing a great souffle of gryere cheese with soft poached pears and a walnut salad and a lovely prawn salad with anchovies. main courses of a wonderfull piece of salmon with a courgette and cherry tomato salad with a pinenut and parsley dressing, first class chef.... donald russell ribeye was cooked well. and then we were stunned to taste the panna cotta witch was stunning it opened back memories of are lunch at angella hartnets who is gordon ramseys chef, just perfect. many best wishes to this pub and i hope that the chef is looked after for a long time as i would hate to see this quality drop. brighton restaurants look out this is a hot restaurant.

Anon Horrible horrible pub
I hate hate hate hate this pub. Pizza is the same that they've served for years. They never change the menu. But worst of all. They trust no-one. Apparently it seems they treat every customer as a potential thief. You have to leave your car keys behind the bar in case you run off without paying. They've only started taking keys recently. They used to take your credit card but I guess too many people complained about having to leave a credit card for security reasons. Ate there once and we were sat at the table and the waitress (it was waitress service then) came to the table to take our order. She asked for a credit card as soon as she had finished writing our order. When I refused to leave a credit card she asked for the money and held out her hand for me to pay. Have never had to do that before. If you went to the Ritz for dinner and sat at a table and a waitress took your order would she hold out her hand for you to pay as soon as you gave your order? No. Exactly. There are loads of other pubs in the area and they don't do the same thing. It really winds me up that they treat their customers as potential thieves. God knows what they'd do if you walked there and didn't have a car key to leave. The rest of the pub is very gloomy and full of people sitting about waiting for their take away pizza or a few table. Either that or they're planning their next bank robbery as clearly this place thinks it only attracts dishonest people who want to make a runner without paying. Perhaps they could have a guard dog at the door with extra sharp teeth or something....

actually, this pub is really good, I liked the food because unlike other pubs, this pub makes its food from real meat and vegetables, unlike a pub like the Swan Inn in Esher, Surrey taht makes its food from processed chicken fat and never cleans their bogs

jack hutchinson A pub that made my day
Myself and my lady friend recently had dinner at the Black Rabbit. We found the service excellant. The setting is wonderful with views of the river and castle. Inside we sat next to an open log fire. I had lamb shank a vey tasty meal I can reccomend. The prices were reasonable although the wine a little expensive, but you get that everywhere now dont you. All in all we had a good time in a pleasant, interesting atmoshere. We certainly will go back......by the way we travelled by boat to the pub and tied up outside.

Emma Turner Don't bother eating there. It's a rip off.
Went to this pub on Sunday 20th Feb. What can I say, the food and service was absolutely dreadful and I can't recommend this to anyone. The seating area was so cramped that the waitresses had to pass food over peoples heads and I thought they might even throw it at you a couple of times judging by the look on their faces! Our food arrived - and I honestly thought it was a joke. The salad can only be described as a garnish, so small they looked like leftovers. I had one quarter of tomato and one slice of dry cucumber that had obviously been hanging around. The pickled onion had strange black patches on it (and had a hair stuck to it - yuk)and I had about 1 tsp chutney and 1 pat of butter. The only decent bit was the baguette which I can't complain about. This cost over £5, which may be about right for most pubs, but I am sorry to say the Black Rabbit certainly took this mickey with this meal. It spoilt what is a beautiful pub in a lovely location. Come on Black Rabbit - stop ripping people and perhaps people will return. I certainly won't

Rod Hunter very poor beer
Despite recent re-vamp, complete inability to provide real ale on a regular basis. Some occasions, NO real ale at all, and on most others, a choice of 2 or 3 which no-one has ever heard of. If your tipple is a nice pint of Harveys, Youngs, Wadsworths, London Pride, Spitfire or similar, don't bother.

Che Smyth Gastronomical Delight
This is a great pub, serving a good selection of traditional food at reasonable prices. The portions are large so take along your appitite. You could not find a more appealing setting at the top of the National trust village of Slindon, overlooking the countryside, right down to the sussex coast.

Les a great pub untouched by the ravages of time.
The Murrell is not so much a Pub, but more a state of mind. Or a certain attitude that exudes all that is great in this green and pleasant land. Well kept proper beer, good home cooking. Never a dull moment.
