Lack of service and bored staff
Service is very lapse,in fact i would go further and say the worst service and staff i have experienced. The food on the other hand was great. The Sunday lunch consisted of turkey or beef, both very tasty when they arrived (about 25mins after ordering).Waitresses seemed pre-occupied and bored with their jobs, slamming desserts on the table for us to share out.If they dont like their jobs why dont they leave and find something they like doing.Such a shame, get some decent staff and this would be a great place.

 Give your support
I have enlisted new local MP, Andrew Griffiths to head a campaign to get The Sykes open again as a mecca for real ale. Andrew is a real ale fan and has just recently been appointed Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Beer.
Please spread the word and encourage drinkers to write to him in support of this campaign.

VISITED FOR AN EVENING MEAL,THE FOOD WAS DISGUSTING,SHOULD HAVE KNOWN, SAT NEXT TO ANOTHER TABLE WHO WERE COMPLAINING THAT IT WAS THE WORST MEAL THEY HAD EVER HAD. AND THEY LEFT WITHOUT EATING. WISH I HAD LEFT WITH THEM. STEAK WAS OFF THE MENU SO HAD SCAMPI, NOT HARD TO DO, ENDED UP WITH WHAT LOOKED LIKE A KIDS DINNER ALL ON SMALL PLATE SCAMPI AND CHIPS MIXED TOGETHER, CANNOT BEGIN TO TELL YOU ABOUT MY FRIENDS MEALS, IT WOULD TAKE ME ALL NIGHT, COMPLAINED TO THE OWNER HE OFFERED US A FREE NIGHT AND SOME MONEY BACK, WAITED FOR HIM, BUT HE SAT DOWN TO FI LLETT STEAK AND THEN IGNORED US. WENT AND ASKED FOR THE MONEY BACK HE PROMISED US AND GAVE IT GRUDGINGLY. I HAVE BEEN TO SOME BAD PLACES TO EAT BUT NEVER FELT BAD ENOUGH TO MAKE A COMPLAINT.

Excellent pub for walkers, drinkers & diners.
I have had no problems with many visits here over the years here ; always as a walker, sometimes with a group sometimes with one or two others. I agree with Maggie's comments - support the rural business. See my review added at www.information-britain.co.uk/reviews.php?place=38103.

with regards to the walkers above, surely pubs have a buisness to run, did they offer any type of food, or did you take your own, if so then you were no playing fair with the landlord, as i've said they have a livelyhood to make, don't they.

a lovely friendly pub, from the landlord, bar staff and serving staff.
nothing was too much trouble and the food was superb.
would highly recommend this pub, particularly as we had had just come from another pub just up the road where the attitude of the staff was completely different and service with a smile unheard of.
many thanks to all at the meynall, you all seem to enjoy your work and it shows.

 fantastic!
fantastic pub! the only 'real' pub left in Burton. Frozen in time somewhere around 1971, this pub has a comfortable 'snug' and bar and is awash with original features. Forget the 'theme' real ale pubs, this is the real thing

 Really good food...
We visit the pub most sundays either for the carvery or something from the 2 for 1 menu.

It's really good pub food, you get what you pay for at the end of the day.

We've had most of the food on the menu, all of it is really nice, I can definately recommend the steaks.

regular visitors to the foresters since the restaurant opened in december 2004. mine hosts geoff and lilian thomas and their staff always provide a warm welcome. the presentation of the food and ever changing menu using local produce keep us coming back. being a chocaholic there is always some chocolate dessert on the menu.

 wonderful country pub
Quite simply, this is one of the best country pubs anywhere in England. It is in a stunning location set amidst rolling hils, woods and farmland and just off the A513 Lichfield - Ashbourne road. The pub has bag loads of history and takes its name from the famous Meynell Hunt, which I believe still meets there from time to time. Real ale is superbly kept, the food is very special indeed (and reasonably priced) and the staff are superb. Well worth a visit, but best to book a table if you want to dine there at weekends

 Wedding Reception
Myself and now husband deceided to have our wedding reception at the Meynell, it was the best decision we made (other than gettin married!)
Sarah Smith was the most wonderful helpful person in the lead up to the wedding and on the day her and the staff made it run so smoothly we didn't worry about a thing. The food was amazing, the venue and area was just the most perfect setting. Everybody who attended agreed that The Meynell was just off the scale! Great!!!!!

Best Pub in Burton. A Very good drink of BasS
A few years ago I used to live on the other side of Cross Street from the Coopers. There was another neighbour near us who used to go daily with a jug to get a pint of Bass to take home. We all used to call her Mrs Pint pot - a real character and part of the street scene. She has now past away, and all our houses gone too to give the brewery more space.

 A real pub
The Black horse, this is on of the last remaining REAL pubs left in England. I started to drink there two and a half years ago while working in Burton. Although I am from the northeast the people who drink there were great to me. The landlord, Glen also is a great bloke and a good host. The bar is the place for the topic of the moment and you will always have something to talk about. It is an easy place to get to, with the bus stop being just outside, there is no reason to use the car.
A big THUMBS UP for the BLACK HORSE and all the staff.

 Poor Pub Food
Whilst visitng you pub on Saturday with my family I was very disappointed with the food we ordered. My mother had to return her meal as it wasn't cooked and My finace's pasta was very overdone. This is the second time I have visited in the last 3 months also the first time my meal was overcooked. Unfortunatley I will not be visiting again to give you a third chance, a shame as the pub itself is very nice.

Bar 15 is by far the best place to go in Burton. It's completely un-towny without being pretentious.

Thomas Sykes A MUST TO VISIT.
Most people gasp in awe on their first visit, is an old stable, but the pub quickly grows on you, decent beer Characteristic enviroment a real cracing place and if Normans on your laughing hes a decent Land Lord, it is slightly clicky but there are one or two that will speak if spoken to.

Decent pub for all tasts for a pint and a laugh after work its ace to let your hair down, a proper relaxed envirament, but if you just wish to read the paper or chat to people the back room is where you want to be (Decent Pedigree and bar staff last time I was in)

This is simply the best pub that I have ever visited. The beer is well kept(and there is good range), the staff and customers are friendly, the interior, which has not really changed since the 19th. century, is great and the food is good and very reasonably priced. What more could you want? Everybody should visit the place!!
