| We ordered 2 main courses, John Dory & Pork Tenderloin both were grossly overcooked and dried out followed by 2 desserts. 1 was a South African named bowl of whipped cream with a few bits thrown in and the other was a tasteless Bread & Butter pudding. All in all the meal was awful and we told the staff as much. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone | ||

Bob Roberts Strange Old Place
| Tried it shortly after it opened, it appears to reopen several times & close again for an equal number of times. Went for a relaxing lunch time pint & a read of the paper. I was however treated to a public row between the landlady and her daughter over some sort of domestic issue, drank up & left. We are priviledged to have several excellent pubs in the Blackdowns serving excellent food & drink. The choices available are considerable I wish the Holman Clavel well under it's new Landlady but what ever that future may be it will not be with me as a customer. | ||

blackdowner Dead | ||
| This popular pub has been transformed by the new landlady MJ (see comment below). It no longer is popular, it's vibrant atmosphere has been sterilized, it's closed more often than it's open and it has no beer. MJ has tried to convert a country pub, with it's walkers, dogs etc, into something resembling more an airport lounge bar. I think the wormeryman had it right and I hope it will not be too long before MJ moves on and a new landlord is given the chance to restore what has always been a community centrepoint. | ||

MJ Something amiss with recent reviews on this pub
| It must be said that this country pub had been turned into a real dump over the last few years. The previous owners, who were a very friendly couple, pretty much kept out of the way of some of the regulars that seemed to slowly take over this pub. The pub and the toilets are now clean and not knee deep in sewage. Fleas and stench of that old urine from dozens of dogs in the bar where food was served are gone – about time. Some people will not be happy with the recent “clean-up” of this historic pub and the obvious concerted purging of the old regulars that ruled the roost. Essentially we do not like change but some changes were seriously overdue. As reviewed by kitchenightmares in 2010 “but the locals know if you're not from round these parts ! (maximum accepted radius roughly 1 mile tops !)” unfortunately it is still true and that might never change, so don’t visit the pub on your own. Plagiarism or malice? Reviewed on this bestpubs site by a woman? that relaxes after work drinking pints, copy of a scathing but full on hilarious personal attack review on beerintheevening.com. Wormeryman I’ve googled and seen it is supposed to be a guy called Clive Roberts, not a woman. I’m all for liberated women that drink pints of beer though and anywhere they are the norm. | ||

Elaine Stevenson Appalling behaviour
| Recently changed hands, and the beer is well kept. However, the landlady is opinionated, gratuitously unpleasant, bigoted and loud. The hapless customer is subjected to a disjointed, irrational and unacceptably abusive tirade of, illogical, ill informed and semi coherent rubbish. I will here refrain from comments on racism and far right politics. From the need to starve the unemployed to make them work, to allegations of serious but unspecified major corruption on the local parish council; and from unnecessary swearing in a putative refined if slightly slurred accent to allegations of the widespread child abuse and incestuous behaviour amongst the local population - a group she clearly despises (whereas virtually all other pubs in the area call them customers). If it weren't all so seriously unpleasant it might almost be amusing - all in all, not a pleasant place for a relaxing pint after a days work. | ||

A.B Mostly exaggurations
| I have to say after reading these comments, a lot of this are exaggurations. An example of this is that the food is not kept from the Sunday carvery as I am the one who disposes all the leftovers. The young staff mentioned are far from aggressive and it is particular people that are giving the Master Thatcher unneccessary negative images. When writing a comment, don't exaggurate as this isn't needed. | ||

Anonymous One to avoid for now!
| Sunday afternoon Carvery, 3 January 2010. This was the most shocking and concerning experience I have had in a restaurant…. When I have my children with me at weekends I enjoy taking them somewhere nice to eat. On this occasion I just had my 15-year-old daughter with me. When we arrived the waitresses were very polite and courteous with us, but the first sign of the bad things to come was when my daughter and I mistakenly picked up the plates for our carvery before the chef, and we were told by the Manageress very impolitely to ‘put the plates down’. When I started my meal I realised that food did not taste good at all, but I continued to eat it rather than make a fuss. My daughter found that the food tasted so bad that she could not eat much at all - just some of the vegetables. I then realised that I couldn’t ignore the problem, so when the waitress asked if everything was all right I told her the problem and she went to get the Manageress. The Manageress was very rude to me and told me that it was just that I didn’t like their food, that no one else had complained, and there was nothing she was willing to do about it. I had to ask for something else for my daughter to eat – just a plate of chips was all my daughter wanted by now. I carefully considered what I was going to do if they tried to charge me for everything. I believe any complaint has to be fair, so despite how impolite the Mangeress was with me I decided to pay for everything except the meal that my daughter had eaten very little of. So I would pay £15.45 instead of the full £21.45 – just £7 off. They did try and charge me for everything and went to get the Landlord/owner when I refused to pay the full bill (I think maybe this Landlord and the above Manageress are the co-owners of the Master Thatcher). The Landlord looked very angry when he arrived (like he had fire in his eyes). He began to ask me the problem but then he cut me off from what I was saying after a few seconds and told me to listen to him, and he came from behind the bar and came up to me – maybe to try to intimidate me. In a very angry way he told me that it wasn’t his fault that we didn’t like his food, that he had no other complaints and demanded that I pay the full bill. He asked me inappropriate things like what job I do. He was also pointing and shaking his finger at me in an intimidating and angry way. I was assertive and determined not to pay the full amount but remained polite and reasonable calm throughout. The most shocking thing was that he also aimed this anger at my 15-year-old daughter with his finger pointing and raised voice. I did demand that he stop talking to my daughter in that way, which he did temporarily. All this was in full view of his customers. He relented and took the £7 off the bill. Most people would have not paid anything at all after being treated like this, but I realised that this type of person could be unpredictable and I needed to be careful. When I had paid, in anger and with his finger pointing he demanded that we get out of his restaurant and threw the receipt at me. By the end of this my daughter was distraught and was crying, and one of his waitresses was trying hard not to cry as she could see my daughter crying. One waitress said to us that she couldn’t believe what he did to us. I wasn’t frightened during the experience but afterwards I was shaken by this experience. My precious daughter was understandably even more shaken by this experience. I thought about whether to write this review before doing so, as I understand that people have problems that influence how they react, but a family needs to feel safe in a restaurant, and after this experience I think I should help protect others and their children from having a similar experience in this restaurant. I have also seen from other website reviews that other people have also been treated badly in this restaurant. If the owners of the Master Thatcher read this I would like to say that I really do wish you the best, but please consider whether this is the correct way to treat your customers. | ||

| This is my local pub, but after visiting a couple of times in 2007, I was less than impressed with the food. However, I noticed some changes recently, so decided to try it again. I'm pleased to report that the food was really good! We went on a Sunday evening, so it wasn't busy. The staff were helpful and polite and the menu looked good. I choose steak and it was very nice. Everyone enjoyed their meal and the cost wasn't too high either. I'll be retruning to eat there again soon! | ||

When i visited for a family meal, we were shown to our table and our drink and food order was taken, once our food arrived it looked delicious. the staff was very helpful offering to get us more drinks and any additional sauces we wanted. overall mine and my family's experience at the master thatcher was very enjoyable.

watpo AVOID! | ||
| At a carvery - Monday evening. Absolutely disgusting food! Not the most expensive pub in town by any means, but might well have the worst food! It is my belief that a large proportion of the food was recooked from Sunday's carvery. If not, the chef should be sacked!! Staff ok & furnishings comfortable. Lighting utilitarian and therefore a pleasant ambience is absent. Avoid weekday carvery!! | ||

JONATHON RUGMAN ATTITUDE PROBLEM OF STAFF AND LANDLORD
| I WENT IN FOR A DRINK WITH A FRIEND/NEIGHBOUR AND FAMILY ON 9/11/06 AND THE GENERAL ATTITUDE OF THE STAFF WAS APPALLING. jUST THE WAY IN WHICH THEY LOOKED AT ME AS IF IT WAS AN EFFORT JUST TO SERVE ME A £3 A PINT OF STELLA WAS APPALLING. AND AFTER PLAYING THE FRUIT MACHINE AND THEN ASKING FOR CHANGE I WAS LOOKED AT AS IF I WAS SOMETHING THEY'D JUST STEPPED IN. IT IS A DISGRACE AND I WILL TAKE THIS FURTHER. THEY HAVE ONLY RECENTLY TAKEN OVER AND IT IS A IF THEY'D RATHER HAVE NO CUSTOMERS. THEY HAVE TAKEN THE FOOTBALL OFF THE BIG SCREEN WHICH USED TO DRAW THE CROWDS IN AND ARE THEREFORE LOOSING CUSTOMERS AND TRADE ALREADY. I HOPE THEY GO OUT OF BUSINESS SOON AND GET SOME BETTER MANAGEMENT IN. I ALSO HOPE THE LANDLORD LOSES MONEY AND THE BREWEY TOO. THEN MAYBE THEY'LL GET SOME GOOD LANDLORDS AND STAFF IN THERE TO RUN THE PLACE AND KEEP CUSTOM. ON ANOTHER MATTER, I'D LIKE TO SAY THAT SPARKIE WHO HAS BEEN WORKING IN THERE FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS IS THE ONLY DECENT MEMBER OF STAFF IN THERE. THE BEST THING HE COULD TO IS TELL THEM WHERE TO STICK IT AND GET ANOTHER JOB. | ||

| Very pleasant lunch on a sunny afternoon in May. No children's area as such, but children were kept amused by the goats in the yard adjacent to the pub garden. Seemed to have a pretty good menu - including mussels, chicken terrine, peking duck pancakes (some of the things we enjoyed) - also fresh fish and roasts. Although next to the main road, traffic noise was not a problem. There were nibbles on the bar too :-) Very nice afternoon. | ||

Gerald Longman Fantastic venue
| After looking for somewhile we have now found the perfect setting for our local meetings that we hold each month. Our opportunity meetings all started in a little room above another pub where only six attended at that time, we then found a hall behind a pub, a much bigger room that would hold a good 30/40 people but there were problems, cold, no atmosphere, dirty. It was time to take our meetings to better heights, we started looking and found THE MASTER THATCHER supurb conference facility, food wine beer / space / warmth / airconditioning and most of all the price was right. The conference room blew us away when we first saw it. It is also easy to reach from the M5 motorway. We cannot find fault it is just perfect and we highly recommend THE MASTER THATCHER I would give the MASTER THATCHER a 5 star rating even though it would be better placed in the country side for a more sceneic view. Oh! and we can now seat 100 people or more, is our business opportunity taking of to those that attend, you bet! www.fastforwardinternational.co.uk/opportunity.asp | ||

| THIS PUB WINS THE AWARD FOR THE RUDEST LANDLORD IN THE UK! Don't dare ask for anything unusual because he *will* shout at you. A simple request to him (due to important allergy reasons) was enough for him to verbally abuse us. We tried to calmly resolve the problem - he flatly refused to listen - I think his words were 'I don't care' - and literally yelled in everyone's faces, and then turned his back on us. An immense bully with no interest in customer service. This wasn't a one-off either - he was as rude to other customers at least three or four times that day that we witnessed. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED. nick montgomery friendly, good food, fair price | ||
| We eat there every time we are in the area. Superb menu and a very good and fairly priced wine list. Excellent, friendly service in a warm and cosy environment. If you are used to over-priced, boring London restaurants, then you will find this a treat. | ||
