 Christmas Dinner Menu
After looking forward to what was described as a Christmas Meal. We were very disappointed to get a Luke warm meal, no cauliflower Cheese, paid extra for pigs in blankets to get 3 hard chipolatas with very little bacon around them. It was a shame as previously meals are quite reasonable. We're being treated by friends so didn't want to make a fuss at the time.

 What great pub grub :-)))))
Been staying in the area for 1 week and have been to the pub twice now. Once for a Sunday carvery which was brilliant and great value for money. Also went for a steak dinner. The steak was cooked to perfection. Got speaking to the manageress who tells me she has taken over running the pub. Really friendly and hospitable - keep up the good work. Would definitely recommend this.

 change of menu
A group of 5 of us visited the pub on Monday evening at about 7.30pm. We were told to order quickly as the kitchen was closing at 8pm. We ordered our meal and some drinks. When we came to order our dessert we were told the kitchen was closed. We couldn't even get a drink or a cup of coffee. Why did they bother to serve us. We could have gone elsewhere which we will do in future. When we left at 9.30pm the staff where all sitting down to food. No I would not recommend this venue to anyone.

 Home from home
Jackie cooks the best food and Sunday lunch is just dreamy. Has a well deserved prize winning pie too!
The monthly pub quiz is always fun and highly recommended.
The renovated cobbled stone and grass beer garden is beautiful.
The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. We've never had a bad experience there and is like a home from home.
Oscar and Sherlock rock too.

Meal not as illustrated on menu
We visited the quantock gateway in Bridgwater on Sunday 12 June2011 ordered the Fishermans Platters £8.59 each when the came they looked nothing like the photo in the menu nor description it said a massive amount of chips there was about a dozen with half little bits of hard chips the fish etc came in a alluminium bucket no serviette just thrown in the bucket with no lemon or tarture sauce. When we complained a surly girl came back with a small bowl of chips which was not much better than the ones we had. She was not at all interested in what we was trying to say.

All it would have taken was attention to the presentation not to look like no one cared and had been thrown in bucket (not forgetting the hygiene of grease in the alluminum)

Very disappointed as this was not a cheap meal.

 Worth the wait!
Very friendly and helpful bar staff, lovely atmosphere. Locals are welcoming and the landlady very bubbly. We have eaten here a number of times, the food tends to take a while to arrive but is delicious and worth the wait. During the summer it is very pleasant to sit in the beer garden and enjoy the sunshine, dining alfresco, what could be better?

 could be so good
Beer is decent, if you can get served. Staff were cleaning something. I guess the longer it takes to get served, the less money you spend. Didn't wait around for food, so can't comment.

A lovely palce to eat in Bridgwater, good value food, varied menu and good portion sizes. Friendly bar and waiting staff.
Never had any problem with the service but then again I am under the age of 60, and do not think the world owes me anything!!!

 Shame about the bar staff
This was our first visit to the Puriton Inn. The food was ok, the locals were very friendly and gave the place a nice atmosphere and the beer was very good. What a shame that the experience was ruined by some surly bar staff. They were cold and unfriendly and left us feeling that they were doing us a favour serving us. I don't think we'll bother again.

Hi there,
I was just wondering whether you hired out / reserved any part of your pub for a christening party we want? (at the bridgwater pub)
We dont want anything formal, just an area to go - and I was wondering if we were able to eat...for example, bowls of chips, platters etc and would we just order that off the menu?? Im looking to book this, this week for May, many thanks.

 Just horrible...
Hi to all. Would like to leave my comment here, regarding the awful, awful meal that me and my family had at this pub. We have been at the Friendly Spirit few years back and always have had a proper service with good food. We went there last week, and i must say that we will never be back there. And i advise everyone to never go to that pub with a self claiming award winning chef!!!! I wonder what the award is... How not to cook?!!! Horrible, horrible horrible.... cold food. hard meat. seems to have been in the fridge for weeks.. even the smell of the food was bad.. been charged 88 pounds, for 4 people when all we had was a bottle of wine, and four inedble meals.. thanks a lot!!!

There must have been something different that day as you were regular weekly customers which suggests that normally things are good. Did you get to explan this to the Manager?

 Great Food!
Just got back from a lovely meal at the Puriton Inn. A friendly, cheerful atmosphere blended well with the superb food and generous portions. Would definately eat here again, although the childrens menu could do with a little imagination!

 Severe attitude problem!!!!
Five of us wanted a bar meal (as advertised outside) but were met with one of the most rude and arrogant individuals serving at the bar. Made to feel very un-welcome so we left quickly and will never return again. Went a few miles down the road to The Malt Shovel and enjoyed a wonderful meal and warm welcoming service-WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!!

Mrs L Richards
 Dreadfull service
I would like to make you aware of what dreadfull service we received from your staff at The Quantock Gateway earlier toady. After being overcharged by £3 and having to wait for a manager to return in order to get the money refunded we then waited over 30 minutes before eventually contacting a member of staff to find out where our food was. Having explained that we had been waiting over 30 minutes and that other tables who had arrived after us had already been served we were just fobbed off with the excuse that there had been lots of large orders(although these had actually arrived after us aswell). We then waited another 10 minutes for our food to eventually arrive only to find that it was not what we had expected. We had paid for 2 Codfather meals which as you know includes large cod, chips, peas and lemon and dill side sauce. What we were actually given was standard cod, chips, peas and 2 sachets of tatare sauce which is described on the menu as fish and chips. I questioned the waitress about what we had been given and she said it was definately the codfather because they dont do any other fish and chips except plaice. The waitress next to her said that you did then they both walked off. Still not happy i went back to the order point at the bar to query the order only to be told yes it was right and the reason we had been given tartare sauce was that they had ran out of lemon and dill. However even though you had ran out a different waitress was then told to bring over 2 slices of lemon and 2 pots of lemon and dill sauce! Very strange considering 1 minute before i was told there was none left. This annoyed me further due to the fact that i knew we had been given the wrong meals but no one was prepared to admit it and rather than that tryed to make us look stupid. Having given up on receiving the correct meal we decided to eat what we were given and explained to the waitress that we would not be returning next week even though we are regular weekly customers. Even after being told this we received no apology whatsoever instead we had to wait 30 minutes before i eventually got up and asked another waitress for our dessert to be brought out and the table to be cleared. When the sundae arrived it was slammed down on the table without a word. If this is your idea of good customer service i suggest that you undertake a complete retraining programme for all your staff. I was completely disgusted with all aspects of the service we received toady and will certainly not be returning or recommending any friends to visit at any point in the near future, if ever?

Mr DJ Binding
 Very Dissapointed
My wife and I called into the Friendly Spirit Cannington one lunch time this week, and decided to order two lunchtime meals only to be told that it was not possible to have a carvery but was told instead that I could have a roast lunch, I ordered Roast Pork, when this meal arrived it had a large Yorkshire pudding placed on the top this could only be described as made of BALSA WOOD, Burnt to a cinder, and unedible, and you could not penitrate some of the vegatables with the fork, and at that moment my wife commented what a good portion of meat was on the plate when this was investigated it was found to be the leftover bits you generally find pushed in the trough at the side of the carving tray, not a sliced portion to be seen.
When ask if the meal had been enjoyed I explained that I was not impressed with the meal and ask to see the manager a young person then arrived to say he was the under manager, who listened to my discription of the meal and my complaint and I was informed instead of having the normal sweet on offer I could have a choice of any sweet . this was declined because I am a DIABETIC I was then charged the full amount for the food which could only be discribed as disgusting. My passing comment was were the managment and staff aware of the other competition in the same business quite close at hand in the vicinity this remark seem to fall on deaf ears. I feel entitled to pass these remarks as I spent 12 years in the licensed trade so have the experiance and some knowledge about what I am talking about, I would suggest that the owners of this establishment when advertising that the premises now employed an Award winning topTop class chef with Certificates, it is my opinion that serving meals such as we recieved he should be certified, he and some of the staff would be a liability if it was my business, especially in today's climate

 Short on customer service
Wanted a quick meal for the kids before bedtime. All tables were empty at 6.30pm - was told fully reserved!! And then dismissive about alternative choices - seems that the pub is more focussed on itself than customers! Not friendly and also unhelpful

 Just Passing Through
23/10/06 We were just passing through with our family on the way back from a weekend in Cornwall & looking for a place to eat when we came accross the Puriton Inn. The menu & food were excellent, along with the service and selection of good wines, & the prices were very reasonable. We wouldn't hesitate to go there again next time we are in the area. Highly recommended!

great food. visited on 7th April 2006
Visited The Friendly Spirit 7/4/2006, nice food. Customer relations some what lacking, I asked for a floater coffee but enquired if it was fresh cream and nothing funny and was assured it was proper pouring cream. When it came it was uht cream I said I couldn't drink it and it was taken away. I was not offered an alternative. A nice lady came and asked me about this and I said as it was not what I asked for and I had not drunk it I didn't think I should pay for it she said ok don't worry about it. I left my money for the meal with friends as I was leaving early but despite all their protests and arguments my friends where made to pay for my coffee by the curly haired waitress who works there. This was embarrassing for them. Seven very unhappy people who will not eat there again and will tell this story to their friends.

 21st birthday dinner
Six of us went out, we had 7 starters wish we had more as it was great to have a bit of everything. The main courses were briliant, I could not eat all the meat on my Lamb Kleftiko, we also had greek salads and the Feta was the the best since we came back from our holiday in Crete. The wine was good along with the coffee. We went on a Tuesday night and the restaurant was full. We are now planning our next trip. The staff went out of their way to help with anything we asked for. Best night out for a long time we were not rushed at any point.

Mr Alford
 Excellent
Firstly, Mr McCarthy, and anyone reading this, what was supposedly written by Miss Staff is completely untrue, someone clearly seems to have an issue towards her and the Friendly Spirit, to the extent to even use Miss Staff's full name falsely, which is also deformation of character. I say this because Miss Staff actually works at the Friendly Spirit and is proud of where she works and the service she provides. I have had numerous visits there and like the other reviews am very impressed with the service and food. Would recommend to anyone.

Just a big thank you to all at the admirals table, for a great and friendly 5 nights stay (7th to 11th dec 05).

 Poor quality food,plagued by flies
Stopped for meal,as had long day working so we thought we would dine out.Ordered our food,no problem....food came and so did the flies. After 5 mins of wafting the flies away we asked the waiter if we could move because of the problem, which we did,but still there were flies.Couldn't enjoy meals as you are continually trying to move the flies off the plates and it just put us of eventually. The waitress who took our plates said that they have been having a problem with this but,no apology. When I went to pay for the meal I told the barman about the problem and he just LAUGHED.Just felt like it was a complete waste of money.I would of felt a little better if they had been a little bit more interested in the issue, but hey!

Staff completely unhelpful when asked about a special dietary need.

Refuse to even entertain the idea of cooking porridge for a diet controlled Gestational Diabetic PREGNANT woman! More concerned about the likelyhood that I would sue them in the unlikely event I would try to posion myself and my unborn baby by supplying them with porridge oats as they don't carry those ingredients in their kitchen.

Booked into the Laburnum House Hotel instead who were more than happy to cook me one little bowl of porridge for breakfast!
