Keeping busy
A great village pub and great B&B
Welcoming host and hostess, well kept beers. Good home cooking. Log fire. Spotlessly clean and comfortable rooms, great breakfast, all for a fantastically reasonable price in a pretty Somerset village. What more can you want?

We went for a meal last evening. We were initially disappointd with the menu but after deciding on what was on offer we were all delighted with the meal and sweet. Service was very good and it was explained that as the kitchen was being updated was the reason for the limited menu. we will be going again in the near future. One hint if you know what you would like phone in advance and it will be provided. One last comment try phoning 665889 as we could not get through on the number you have listed here.

 Dolphin under going transfomation
The Dolphin had been closed for several months now re-opened under new management and attitude. Family friendly atmosphere with a huge beer garden. The kitchens are being refitted and an exciting menu will be offered from 13-08-2012. Great to see the place coming to life at last, lets get behind the proprietors and support their efforts to create a vibrant pub.

Best Pub Carvery I have found in Chard & Crewkerne
I see that George also left a review below of our recent Carvery experience at the Windwhistle Inn in Somerset. I had a lovely Sunday Lunch at their great value carvery which I must say was superb. I met another couple and their family there and together we had a great time in the pubs magnificent child friendly garden. Both myself and George promised that we should place a review to show our appreciation. In addition I wanted to thank George and Jane for their great company.
A Pub to be recommended especially since being taken over by www.QualityPubFood.co.uk

 Windwhistle Inn in Chard www.QualityPubFood.co.uk
We recently visited one of the best pubs in chard, namely the Windwhistle Inn, whose internet site www.QualityPubFood.co.uk first attracted our attention. To our great satisfaction, we had a fantastic Sunday Carvery which offered great service, value for money and a really authentic tasty sunday lunch. I take my hat off to the staff and congratulate them on running one of the best Pubs in the area of Chard and Crewkerene. I really can recommend this pub with its wonderful Garden, Fab Views and excellent quality pub food.
Thanks again

 Excellent old-fashioned country pub
A beautiful old country village pub under new management as of early April 2010. Has a function room, skittle alley, bar skittles, board games, pool table, dartboard and juke box, along with a beer garden with a stream running alongside. There is a huge car park at the back, and it's no more than 5 minutes' walk from Crewkerne Railway Station. Has a well-kept Ammonite (Dorset Brewing Co.) on hand pump at present. There are plans in the near future to add a large plasma screen tv for sports events, and an upgrade of the juke box to a more modern one.

Situated in the country village of Ash, this is a real country pub. Sporting a fine selection of Real Ales and Ciders and a magnificent roaring, log fuelled, Inglenook fireplace, this is a great place where to sit and to fully relax becomes so easy.
And that is not all.
The full menu comprises delicious home made dishes which at under 8, represent tremendous value for money.
They are freshly cooked with fine ingredients to make for a good eating experience. You won't need a dinner jacket to lunch or dine here but you are advised to have an empty stomach, for the portions really are man-sized.

Futhermore, The Bell Inn is a Tardis-like establishment, for behind the main bar there lies a large function room with a well-tended beer-garden beyond that.

We don't live in Ash but have been back 5 times in 5 weeks - and still want more.
If you are near the area then don't pass it by - you won't be disappointed.

I can strongly recommend the Windwhistle Inn near Cricket St Thomas. I have been going there for some time now and have held many family celebrations there. The food is always good, the staff are friendly and courteous and we are always made welcome.

 family xmas party
We had a wonderful meal at the Windwhistle this weekend for a party of 14 , the food was great, the service was great and the atmosphere was perfect for a traditional English country pub, which is very difficult to find these days. Thank you to sally and the team.

I have been using the Windwhistle Inn for around 10 years, it started off quite infrequently then about 5 years ago something dramatic happened.
Changes occured and improvements were made, slowly at first and a momentum grew and grew until the present day. Today I would challenge anyone to visit this truly beautiful Inn and not be facinated by the transformation both inside and out, this transformation came about because of a very caring country loving lady called Sally. This new landlady has put her heart and soul
into making the Inn what it is today.
I find myself now visiting 3or 4 times a week and I constantly hear people praising the views out side, the quaintness inside and a friendliness second to none. I would recommend the Inn to anyone especially lovers of quality
freshly cooked food with a wonderfull varied menu.

 meal on r way home
The service we recieved yesterday was the worse i have exprienced in a long time . The barman was useles he told us it wasnt busy food orders would be quick which was ideal for me as i had my elderly parents with me & was on my way to yeovil hospital to visit my very poorly gran ,after waiting 30 mins i approached a very helpfull waitress ( who explained the bar man never enters the kitchen so doesnt have a clue how long a wait is for food orders ever) any way i meals arrived shortly after this or should i say 3 out of 4 meals arrived mine took a further 10 mins. I would just like to say a big thank you to the waitress who delt with us in the end, even when we went to pay the bill there was no apology from the bar man he wasnt even that keen on takin our money.I certainly wont be holding my 40th there like i planned & it will be a long time before we visit again & wont be recomending it to any of our family or friends .

 Unfriendly and has gone downhill
This used to be a great place to eat. However, we visited recently and the staff were unfriendly and unhelpful. We were told they do not have highchairs because of health and safety reasons. It used to be a family friendly place with very good food, but this is sadly no longer the case. The menu was also not as exciting as before.

..ruined mainly by an unfriendly landlord, who treats real ale drinkers like idiots. Shame, because it's in a great location near the station and the locals are generally quite friendly.

 A traditional country pub
I have used the Bull Inn for many years the owners martin and Anne Smith are welcoming hosts.

Always a good selection of beers and an excellent restaurant.

The gardens have recently been re-landscaped with a new covered patio area area.

A good place for a quiet drink, a bar meal or a special occasion in the restaurant.

I would have no hesitation in recommending the Bull Inn.

Good food, good beer, children's play area too
We had lunch at the Martlett yesterday. It was a breezy, mostly sunny day. The outside setting was lovely (lots of pots on patio and 2 tables on sun terrace; grassed area with about 8 more tables, leading to small children's play area).

I had trout, stuffed with prawns and topped with almonds, served with new potatoes and a very good side salad; hubby had the smoked haddock fish cakes - also very tasty. The children's chips (with scampi) were some of the best pub chips I've tasted! Several good local beers on tap and a very cosy interior (though didn't see all).

The outside play area is mostly suitable for 3-8 year olds I guess - with two tyre swings and a climbing frame and slide.

Friendly landlord - who helped me with my beer choice (sorry! can't remember his name).

Skittle alley too.

All round good pub.

 Much Better
I think the pub changed owners at end of 2005... they have done quite a few improvements and the food is now much better at very good price. Its a lovely country pub with oak bams and open fireplace etc. Have been back on several occasions now, people don't know it's there yet so get a wonderful night out without the crowds.

Very handy as a base for touring Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire. Wincanton races nearby and Wincanton is twinned with Ankh-Morpork - visit the Cunning Artificer's Discworld Emporium just up the High St. Excellent, excellent food and nice accommodation with big breakfasts!

We've had 2 fantastic meals here and were really disappointed with a third on valentines day. (The portions were small and it was expensive for what you got.) We haven't been back since as it wasn't that cheap and didnt want to risk another bad meal. It has been done up recently and looks great, so if our one bad meal was a one off it would be worth a visit.

I cannot believe anyone would have a bad word to say about the food. Myself and family have visted the Windwhistle numerous times this year and everytime the food has been superb. I will go on to recomend the food to everyone and will definitely be going back for more.

 Hmm - Slaughtered Lamb
OK - we visited this pub after a walk on the levels and we were not exactly welcomed. Literally tthe conversations stopped when we entered, and the stares of the regulars made us leave after one pint - which I have to say was very good. Perhaps more beers and less regulars may help?

 Rip off!
I have never stayed in more run down dirty accomodation in my life. I think Hovel is more accurate description than Hotel. My first instinct when I left was to call Environmental Health, hopefully that will make a change. The word about town is that this place has been run into the ground by the new owners over the last six months and that a suspicious fire / insurance claim may soon occur. The landlord is perfectly suited to this sort of third rate hotel, he is rude, arrogant, inhospitible and obnoxious and his wife is no better. Don't even go here for a bet!

 Bad experience
I recent went to the Windwhistler Inn with a group of 19 for a 60th party, my husband and I drove 180 miles to attend this party and the whole meal from starter through to pudding was awful. We had burnt food, under cooked food and even food that we didn't order. They ruined the birthday party.
