 Sunday Carvery
I recently visited your Pub with my Mum & Brother and I can honestly say it was a fantastic experience.

We all had a carvery which was absolute perfection, and what's more the staff were extremely helpful and nice and could not do enough to help us.

Thanks for a cracking Sunday lunch and we look forward to visiting you again in the near future.

Over priced and staff only friendly when your eating there of an evening. We went with children and felt totally unwelcomed. Staff were offish and didn't really want us to stay although our children were well behaved and we spent enough money in there. Will not be going back.

Great food, good sized portions love it.
You won't be dissapointed or come away hungry. Everything is good. Once you've been you WILL return. My only critisism would be that they don't cater for the children then i could come more for lunch.

 Lovely evening meal
7 of us went here recently for a meal whilst staying overnight in Stansted. We all chose different meals and all enjoyed excellent food. The staff were very friendly and helpful We couldn't fault them or the food and would definitely visit again if the opportunity arose

 Upset 10 year old
For the last 2 weeks of going to the chequers in ugley has been nothing but a night mare. the first time was my ten year old granddaughter being upset after being told that she cound not have 2 more roast potatoes that the chef called seconds ! for the last 18 months we have never heard this before. week 2 as soon as my granddaughter went up for her carvery she was pointed at with a meat fork and told in no uncertain terms as NO SECONDS. after our lunch her father said to the chef that would he please speak to him first and not upset his daughter. well i could not believe the out come there was shouting and abuse from the chef and all with a carving fork pointing at my son in law.the noise then bought out the owner who was no better. there had never been seconds allowed in his pub but we know better because we had had seconds . when asking one of his waitressess she also said that we were right. if you paid your money you could go for seconds but not meat.they will not be getting any more trade from us we have always gone there with different people. what a loss for the pub.what appalling behaviour from both the owner and the chef in front of other diners.

Mr s Warwick
 Rudeness towards repeat customers
I have been taking my family to the chequers pub for Sunday carvery for the past year however my 10year old daughter went back for seconds of roast potatoes this Sunday and was told by the usual chef that she could not have them but on previous occasions this has never been a problem and he had welcomed and encouraged seconds of veg on questioning him and the landlord dave smith they both became rude and abusive towards my family calling us liars and waving a large carving fork near my face,I also informed them that there waitress who was stood beside had stated we could have seconds of veg which she confirmed to mr smith ,they still would not apologise and maintained we were still lying very poor attitude towards myself and young family shame on you!

 Pub food at its best
If your looking for great pub food with a good pint in a traditional Essex country pub look no further. I've been to the pub a number of times over the last 18 months and never had a bad meal. It's proper good honest stick to your ribs pub grub. Made the Sunday carvery this weekend which was really really good! It's how a pub should be.

 Disappointed is an understatement
I can honestly say I have never experienced such rude waiting staff, a thoroughly disappointing evening out. Tables crammed in, overpriced food and staff with a 'couldn't care less' attitude. It is safe to say I will NEVER be returning to this sorry excuse for a pub with grub.

 Had a Pub curry lunch
The Three Horeseshoes has had a refit with new beech tables and chairs. The Public bar and Saloon are now one single bar with the oak wall beams still in place. The beer garden is much the same as it has been for the last 50 years. The front of thr pub has been set out with tables that has been done rather well. Good food and now a Free House with gest beers. Ales although I expect you can buy that larger stuff.

Food is awful, very poor quality. Staff are rude and abrupt - do not seem to know how to smile or how to offer good customer service.

Everything very over priced. Such a shame as thought this was one of the best pubs in Stevenage.. but the past few times we have been it has been awful!

 new staff a gem
visited it in the summer and was left to wonder ! returned in Sept and found it no change with truly awful self assured barman.

am pleased to say new staff are attempting to put right past faults.
and this weekends vist was a breath of much needed fresh air.

do give it a try and you will be surprised at the new pub

 Would recommend and re-visit!!
Last saturday My family and I went to the chequers in Ugley for a meal. There was 8 of us, we were greeted with a smile as soon as we walked in. we were seated and given menus. The service was brilliant and the staff were so helpful and happy to serve us. I would like to say that not only was the service amazing but so was the food, we had 8 different meals and every single meal was faultless, especially the steaks, they were cooked perfectly to our liking and seasoned perfectly. if you want a nice day or evening meal with friends or family and want perfect pub grub and amazing service then visit the chequers in Ugley.

I used to go the black Horse in the 70s back then it was the best pub in Hertfordshire. it went down hill rapidly in the mid 80s and became a very unfriendly place so we all stopped going. Popped in the other week for old times sake and was delighted by it. The new landlord and landlady are very friendly and welcoming, the food was delicious, plenty of it and very well priced. I think we will be making it our local again, it has a feel of the old 'Horse' . It would be nice to see some of the old crowd back again, so if any of you are reading this,.... Get back to West Street.

Still hungry........
 What a waste!
Decided to go for lunch today, plenty of staff hanging around being very loud....lunch arrived very quickly after first mouthful was asked if everything was ok at which time it was. I then realised that my black pudding salad with crispy fried potatoes and croutons actually lacked the latter two ingrediants, the egg white was runny, black pudding was mush and barely warm and the bacon was mostly fat....so I left it as at that point all staff had disappeared apart from bar man who was inundated with customers. My fiance 's scampi and chips was also well below par with the waitress hanging around until he had finished with the condiments. All in all a waste of time, money and nice setting on a sunny afternoon.

 Poor badger
The Black horse or the Dead badger and MG Is a fantastic pub with a very welcoming crowd of locals, if you come in as a stranger you will leave as a friend.
The pub offers a really nice selection of food (don't ask for a Badger sandwich! That might eran you a cuff in the ear from the landlady. The landlord Chris is a real old school gent.
You will find a great selection of really well kept and served real ales as well as lagers, ciders and spirits.
The Secret garden is one of Hertfords best kept secrets it is quite large with plenty of room for bbq's and partys. Chris and Kim also have an upstairs room available for parties, functions and meetings. Buffet meals are also available for parties.

 Poor service
Decided to go to this pub due to its nice location and good variety of food. No staff at the bar to serve food or drink for a long period. Head bar man walked off when it was my turn to be served and then served everyone else who had qued after me. Very dissappointed - walked out!!

 Spot on.
If i'm passing i always pop in.
Great IPA, fantastic Guinness, in fact haven't had a bad pint yet. The food is traditional and generous. Massive garden, brilliant in the summer. All round good British Pub.
Don't forget to ask Kim about the poor Badger.

Well thought out, intelligent dishes. Some of the best food I have eaten in a long time. Have just booked again. Lovely atmosphere, great staff. Expect to pay 30-35 per head with wine. Portions excellent. This place was recommended to me by several friends and despite the fair distance to get there, was well worth it. Enjoy....

We moved into a house across the road from the Hand and Crown around 3 years ago and have been locals from then on. Amazing staff, no exceptions and the food is talked about far and wide. Normally when you get very generous portions the food quality suffers but not here, I have never had a bad meal and my family and I have had a few! Even when we just go in for a drink we have a look at the specials to see what we are missing!

Lunched here today Sandwich looked like it had been cut with a butter knife so thin the filling fell out. Bread was dry, chips not worth eating. There is a shortage of staff especially bar staff and this is every time I go there. BAr staff need more support I barman on a busy Friday lunchtime....When will they learn

What a quaint and lovely place
We frequent this pub occasionally when we are passing by Sawbridgeworth, and have always been overwhelmed with the warmth and friendliness of all the people who work there.

The Landlord is a diamond geezer with a quirky sense of humour and the bar staff are quick and friendly.

The garden is lovely and is well stocked with things to amuse children.

 Hand & Crown is fab!
This is 1 of the best places for food! The menu is innovative and service is friendly and helpful. The only problem is the large portion size means having to decide between starter or dessert ; ))

 Back to a traditional pub
This place must have reopened when I wasn't looking and what a rediscovery it's turned out ot be! Great atmosphere and beer and the food is as good as any local restaurant ,but at pub prices. Lazy Sunday's here are a great value treat too.

Friendly pub, food piping hot and presented well. I ordered the Loin of Lamb, which was on a bed of mashed potato, the quantity of meat was very poor, four very small slices. A very disappointing visit especially when we had taken friends along who had not been to the Fisherman before.

 nearst pub to stansted airport
visited on a friday evening what seems to be a nice country pub next to Stansted airport. on entering the quaint entrance found a cramped bar, with eight place table fitted next to bar so close that there is no space between it and the bar. tacky red pattern carpet from the 70s. barman/manager complete with shorts (in october evening) tattoos and tee shirt, local shouting to all who would listen so loud it was painfull to the ear and another asleep on the bar. others doing some sort of trade in the dark of the gardens.
beer was passable although over six pounds for two pints as a little strong. would only try the food if Mc Donalds was busy or closed. carpark was full so one would assume airport parking available.

I have been in the John Gilpin a few times now and I have to say I think the management are a disgrace. All they seem to do is sit at the bar drinking whilst all the other staff seem to be overloaded with work.
Not only that but they are also very rude , this pub needs new management.

Some good food but arrogant management
We had a reservation for a table for on our weeding anniversary for 7.00pm, made well in advance. At 9.30 am on the day we had a call from the pub asking us to confirm our reservation and were told we must vacate the table by 9.00pm. No arguments allowed, take it or leave it. We have so many people to serve. We left it and managed to book a last minute table at The Bean Tree in Harpenden which we prefer but is further to walk. For years The White Horse has been our local, within easy walking distance of our home. We and our friends have eaten at Novelli's a few times to date. The food is good but not exceptional, the portions small, the service indifferent and the prices too high. It is a pity the management is not interested in local trade. When the novelty of Novelli has worn away they may wish they were.

 staff that argue
we visited the pub and had a good meal well served the next week the staff argued with us that we were never there the week before that table numbers that were not there the week before were we could not have an outsidee tab when we did the week before , not important things but what a change that spoilt the next visit. so beware the customer is not always right here.

Classy look with poor quality food
This place looks great. Some really great designers have made a great effort. Unfortunately this cannot be said about the food or standard of service. One of the worst meals I have had (making MacDonalds look tempting) followed by a waiteer telling me that steaks and such like are luck of the draw for quality.

Quite simply, one of the worst pubs in Hertfordshire. Deafening music, screaming barmaids, hostile clientele, no visible management of any kind.

 Mediocre in All Respects
A pub with a carvery restaraunt attached this place succeeds in consistently disappointing. The food is expensive and insufficient, the beer seems of secondary importance when compared to the diners, and suffers as a result. Mediocre style triumphs over even more mediocre substance. Disappointing.

One of the Finest Pubs in 100 miles
No music, no fruit machines, no wide screen TV, no tatoos, no oiks. Just first class real ales kept near perfectly ALL of the time. This pub is a real drinkers paradise and well worth a trip. A rare 5 rosettes from me.

All the Failings of a High Street Boozer
In prime position the Harpenden Arms suffers from knowing that punters are going to walk in, so it fails to go out of its way to look after them or the beer. I can think of half a dozen pubs in Harpenden that make this look like toy town.
Friday, October 7, 2005Rating: rosettes

 One of the Best
Great food, lovely building, good beer make this one of the nicest pubs in the Harpenden area. This is a proper pub that successfully combines its food and wet trade to make an all round good boozer.

One of the Best - But Get the Beer Right
An really nice pub with a first class range of either pub grub in the bar or more upmarket fare in the conservatory restaraunt. Surroundings are comfortable, staff are friendly, if only the beer was consistently good.

 Betty's Hotpot Anyone?
A super little local pub that has a very traditional, well priced menu at lunchtimes. Two bars allows the pub to cater for all types of clientelle. A real trip down memory lane for punters who like a boozer to be unspoiled by clever marketing men. This place is timeless.

 Unfriendly staff, thumbs down
9.30 on a quiet evening; a group of friends meeting up for an evening out; made very welcome by the bar staff asking us to drink up and leave if we weren't intending to buy more drinks... if you're in the area go to the pubs in Weston instead - cricketers or red lion - both are far more friendly...

Bad beer, dirty and poor service
After waiting nearly 15 minutes to be served by a surly barman, rejecting my pint of bass as it smelt bad and was cloudy, I tried their Adnams, usually an excellent beer. Sadly this tasted as if it had been watered down. The bar work area was dirty, covered in slops and the barman was rude. All staff seemed to be overworked and stressed = unhelpful. Don't bother, even the location doesn't make up for this. We won't be going again for a long time.

 wouldn't bother!
visited early on Saturday evening only 1 member of staff working who had 2 speeds SLOW and STOP Waiting 25 minutes to get served is not my idea of a fun Saturday.Huge potential for a beer garden wasted by too few tables and kids playing football at 9.30 at night after being hit on the head it was time to go

Best Pub in area by a long shot!
This large, 2 bar pub has an excellent atmoshphere within, serving people of all ages, from families to youngsters looking to have a good time. With extermely friendly bar staff, great beers and real ales, an outstanding food menu and a large beer garden which is second to none in the summer, this pub truly deserves all the credit it gets, and for its notoriety within the area

Easy by car or public transport
Great pub. Ted and Norman, a couple of the regulars, showed us the ropes. Very friendly they were too, with a good line in recommendations for the draught ales. Don't miss the food either.

Pub Grub not up to standard
Visited 23/02/05 early lunchtime (12pm).
Service good - quality of cooked full meals (2) - poor.
Could not recommend having a reunion
lucheon for 12 people, which was purpose of visit.
Not up to Hungry Horse standards in Dunstable - home town.

Nick is a great host, unfortunately moving to the New Inn soon. Kev will remain as chef so the food should continue to be fine. Good Badger Ales.

 horrific day out
I would strongly suggest avoiding this establishment. The staff lack tact and enthusiasm, the manager was brutally obnoxious. I cannot comment on the food as it never turned up, even following an hour and three quarter wait. When I told the manager that we would just like our money back and be able to dine somewhere else, he asked, Why?.
Frankly so disgraceful I found it almost laughable.

Great atmosphere but they only play one CD and thats scratched so you get very bored quite quickly. Great for watching football though! Bit like being at a youth club at the weekend.

 Exceelnt Pub
I used to frequent this pub when Gerry Speight was the publican.I now live in New Zealand and yes I miss those British pubs. One has to go a long way to emulate the friendly atmosphere of a British pub.
