Duke William would turn in his grave.
My wife and I stayed at the Duke William over three days of the 2012 xmas market.
Firstly let me tell you that the room was warm and the bed was clean and comfortable. However, the shower was awful ( scaldingly hot or nothing) and there was no soap or shampoo in the room. The shaver light failed and there was little toilet paper.
We asked the cleaning lady for more toilet paper along with milk, teabags, and some shampoo etc. We were informed by the slightly embarrassed cleaner that the hotel does not supply shampoo and soap. Which was altogether weird but however, bless her, that afternoon it seems she took matters into her own hand and shampoo appeared with all the other stuff.
Breakfast was awful on the first day. Following the bowl of dust that passed for cornflakes my egg was like a golf ball and my wife's was totally uncooked. The mushrooms were balls of water and the beans had been overheated to the point where they lost all taste.
Next morning I was very specific about my breakfast, asking for two fried eggs with soft yolks. As soon as I did this the other guests all joined me in rebelling against the prospect of a full english and asked for their own preference. The young lady serving lost the plot, failed to take down orders in writing, and the ensuing number of wrong orders was hilarious, particularly as my breakfast was the first and the only correct one.
I also asked for cornflakes, as there did not appear to be any, and I was told that they ate them all yesterday. As I was trying to be a little assertive at this point the staff were asked if they might possibly pop to the Spar shop thirty yards down the road to buy some. Off they harrumphed and five minutes later the boss walked into the dining area, tore the top off a new box of cornflakes, poured a huge pile out for my wife and flounced dramatically over to our table and slammed them down in front of her. Talk about Basil Fawlty or what? I was gobsmacked by his attitude. He made no effort to hide his anger at a customer politely requesting that he get off his idle arse to get cornflakes. He also tried to tell me that I did not know how to operated the shower and that is why it was all or nothing. Me, an engineer all my life, fifty six years old and that little twit tells me.
In summary the Duke William is a pub. It has some rooms at the back which it lets out to guests but really the guests, and all they entail, are no more than an inconvenience to the staff there.
The cleaning lady was golden and on the first night there was a guy called Joe who was also very helpful and seemed to want to provide good customer service. The rest of them were in sad need of some significant training in customer service. Awful, just awful.
One rosette for Joe and one for the cleaning lady.

 AWFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE
Went to Woodcocks last night for a quick meal after parents evening, arrived at 635pm, eventually ordered after catching the eye of a waitress at 655ish pm, food still hadn't arrived by 740pm so asked the same waitress if she could find out how long our food was going to be. After a long wait she came back to say it was being plated up but then had to wait a further 10 minutes for it to arrive. We literally had to bolt it down and go and pay where the waitress told us our order had been lost in the kitchen!!!!!

When I asked her how long our food was going to be she should have offered us apologies then and told us the situation. You get better service at McDonalds!

The staff who work there have no time/respect for children on one occasion my son and his friend put a 20p coin into a machine which didn't work and had no sigh to proof it, I took them to the bar to ask for their money back or the 20p toy and the man who owned it snarled at the kids and said its only 20p you don't need it! and he made a remark that said he didnt care! then later on when he was picking up the glasses he was tutting at us? and we felt that they was always checking up on us it just made us feel VERY uncomfortable, also the play-area is so unsafe and unclean on the climbing area half of it was broken and the slides were really dirty, I advise you not to come one thing is I will NEVER return.

 The Stag's Head
As a regular and long term customer of The Stag's Head, I read with interest the comments made by Louise Kotek. Whilst finding her writing skills somewhat entertaining, I do feel she has exaggerated her whole experince. In this area of Lincoln, we have only one decent pub left - that is The Stag's Head, 5 others have closed down in the surrounding area, so the fact that this pub is still going strong speaks for itself. I know the pub is extremely busy on a Sunday as thier Sunday Lunches are re-nowed for quality and value abd thier food offers everyday. I have had hundreds of meals over the years with plenty of happy memories. The Manager is in fact the Head Chef who works extremely hard in this pub as do her team of staff who on busy days are trained to deal with any complaints quickly and effectively, so it is very unlikely she couldn't be bothered to deal with a complaint. If I have ever had cause to complain I have been dealt with in a professional and swift manner, although this has been a rare occassion. Finally The Stag's offers great quality food at a reasonable price complimented by good cask ales and draught beers. Ms Kotek may indeed prefer a quieter restuarant atmosphere with inflated drinks prices if not food - that is her choice- But Please leave our Local alone, We Love it!!

 The Stags Head Lincoln
As I walked into the pub to the sounds of Right Said Fred, I did wonder whether this place was going to be for me. The music was so loud that in the end we had to go to the barman to ask for it to be turned down, instead of screaming at each other to have a normal conversation.
We were served quickly and in all honesty the bar staff and waitress were fantastic, especially based on what came next.

We ordered garlic mushrooms and the platter (combo for 2 to share). The garlic mushrooms came with bbq sauce instead of the garlic mayo we ordered, interestingly the sauce came in plastic shot glasses something you would expect in Ibiza with vodka jelly in and 2 strips of celery plonked into the bbq sauce as decoration. The combo platter was enough for 4 people wanting a heart attack; it was a saturated fat nightmare.

The mains we ordered were Surf 'N Turf, Burger and a lasagne. The steak in the Surf 'N Turf should have been 'medium' it was so well done it could have been used as a weapon! The onion rings were not circles, just massive chunks of onion drowned in batter. My burger was charcoal, I actually felt sorry for the cow that was murdered to become this meal. The lasagne was the redeeming part of the meal and definitely a 'safe' option. Any meal that requires even an element of cooking or finesse just don't order it. Even the salad was uninspiring and in fact consisted mainly of tomatoes.

The waitress saw our leftover food and took the initiative to ask how the meal was. She was worried about taking the complaint back into the kitchen because of how scared she was of the manager. A barman then came over to ask us what was wrong with the meal, he then stated that if the waitress had checked on us more regularly maybe our experience wouldn't have been so bad. We explained that we didn't want the waitress to be blamed, we were just wanting to register our complaint to the chef.

This is when we found out that the manager of this pub was in fact the chef and apparently doesn't take criticism well. The manager couldn't even be bothered to come and discuss our complaint with us sending every other member of staff instead.

A disaster from start to finish. Just don't waste your time, walk further down the road and for the same price you can have a fantastic meal in some of the restaurants in the Bailgate area.

called for a meal yesterday. The tables were full of left over food and plates even though the people had left. Waited 10 mins to get the attention of the waiter. Went to the bar to try to get a meal but sent away to wait for the waiter. The waiter was talking footballl to other people. Left after 20 mins as we still had not been able to give our order to the waiter. The place looked unkept and filthy dirty so maybe it was best we had not eaten there. This was a return visit after several months as we had a the same experience several months ago. Will not attempt to visit again.

 Spit and sawdust!
15 or 20 years ago this was a fantastic littlke boozer, but it hasnt ever been renovated as long as I can remember and as a result it hasnt changed with the times. People drinking in the Bail nowerdays prefer much nicer and more friendly surroundings. The spit and sawdust immage, spilt drinks and scrapping is not what is wanted anymore. The Duke no longer provides a nice atmosphere and is very run down indeed. Often they run out of beer which suggests financial problems. Maybe if the landlady stayed of the drink herself this might help. All the other pubs in the Bail have moved on with the times but the Duke is set in the 1980's but not in a good way. As a result, all the dossy dole hangers, the alcohilics with no future and the druggies have adopted the Duke as their own base of operations. There are regular fights and the police are regularly called, (by the victims not the landlady) but time and time again the landlady continues to do nothing to ban the thugs because they spend a lot of money with her getting hammered on drink. The police have been to the Duke at least three times in the past month that I know of. In summary; a pub with expensive drinks (when they are actually available) full of 'pissheads' and druggies, a violent place to be avoided unless you are banned from every other pub in the area in which circumstances you are guaranteed to get served.

 NEVER AGAIN!
My wife and I stayed at this hotel for one night which was more than enough I can tell you. It was a complete nightmare! The staff member who booked us in showed little or no interest in our booking She was the owner so I am told but she looked half drunk and smelled of alcohol. The pub was full of roudy drinkers watching football on the TV. The room was damp. There was mould in the bathroom and the toilet was dirty. The bed linen was damp and dirty. The room was run down. We discovered that there was no chef so they could provide no food. We understand thie owner has a problem employing and retaining staff due to her peronality. We complained but the owner simply wasnt interested and fobbed us off onro another member of staff whilst she carried on drinking with her friends. We were going to find a different hotel but they refused to refund our money so we stayed just one night. We bitterly regret this decision and upon reflection we would have been better just losing that money. The pub was full of drunks and roudy till nearly 1.00 in the morning. There was a fight or a scuffle, we heard most of it but remained in our room. It was like living in Beiruit! We actually fetched our sleeping bags from the car when safe to do so and slept in them instead of the dirty bedding. We left the next day as soon as possible without using their washing facilities and simply went home to get showered and wash our clothes If this is a typical Lincoln Bailgate hotel then all I can say is NEVER EVER AGAIN!

Better than it used to be
I have been to woodcocks on meany occasions over the years and have never had a problem. yes it is a 2 for 1 resturant but were elce can you get a normal menu with the normal pies burgers etc and a specials bord consisting of at least 6 options each vegi, chicken, pork, fish, beef/lamb wich are all on the 2 for 1 aswell. I can see it would cause problems when busy as there are so meany tables. We have just come back and waited no longer than 30mins for are meals and that was on a sat night at 6.

excellent xmas venue for all the family
Having booked our xmas family meal for 30 people at the stags i was dismayed to read comments made by annoymous, and nearly cancelled. Thankfully i didnt.  Worth a look.
Been there a few times now as its not far from were i live.
Staff always seem pleasant although somtimes Busy taking food orders from people who have not taken their time to decide what they want before they get to the paypoint
The food is suitably priced 4 can dine with a drink and there is change from £30 reasonable food but sometimes steaks overdone.:-( If you want A la cart this is not for you.If you want a meal out with family or friends that won't break the bank it is.

The woman manager is a horrible vile lady. please do not waste your time going in there or give away your money to her. I went in for the first time after moving to uphill lincoln and i have never been spoken to the way she spoke to me, i only asked how long my meal was going to be and she was rude, unpleasant, wasnt apologetic for the wait basically made me feel like i didnt deserve an answer, so i left the pub with a refund, fortunate for me actually as the food looked awful. She clearly couldnt cope with the few food orders she had on. i will never go near that place again and would advice others not to either.

 pub or dump?
having visitd the pub on a few occasions now i have found that the food is of very good quality. the service, on the other hand was terrible. i sat my self on a high table directly opposite the kitchen doors and was ignored by twosupervisors as they walked past me regularly seemingly oblivious to my presence. after a 30 minute wait my evening was rescued by a charming young man called liam who pulled himself away from a busy bar and took my food and drink order. my food was brought to me by a very pleasant young girl named megan. two bright lights in a very dreary group of staff don't go!!!!!

 Recent visit
I went there for a quiz evening recently, although the quiz was good the man that is the manager seemed drunk although working. He was also very rude to some of my female companions, he made sexual references that were not appropriate. If it was not for this we would have returned, the food was suitably priced and reasonable. It's a shame that this incident marred our night.

 Never again!
My family and I decided to visit The Woodcocks yesterday as a treat and an alternative to spending most of Sunday cooking dinner as we usually do. First impressions were fine after securing a table and ordering our first drink. It was after deciding on what to eat and going up to the bar that things started to take a turn for the worse. We were told by the barman If you're eating inside we come to your table and take your order. 'Fair enough' thought I and we returned to our table expecting to be followed by the barman as there was no one else at the bar for him to serve. I was wrong. We sat at our table with no drinks for over ten minutes waiting before we decided that maybe walking out to eat elsewhere would be our best bet. It was as we were about to walk out when a member of staff appeared to take our order. We ordered food and drinks and awaited our drinks (that I'd have preferred to go to the bar for and fetch myself in the first place)to arrive. This didn't happen for quite some time, another ten minutes I would estimate. Then I noticed our drinks being put on a tray at the end of the bar. The drinks were then left there for another considerable amount of time (ten minutes again I would guess) before being brought over to us - again we were considering walking out and the member of staff appeared (unfortunately) in the nick of time.
The wait for the food was quite short in comparison to the amount of time it took for our drinks to be delivered but when we did eat we wished that we had walked out.
The wife and myself had chosen the Chicken Jalfrezi which, as it was on their 'Specials' menu, we expected it to at least fairly palatable - we weren't expecting an Indian quality curry from an English pub, but were expecting much better than we received. There was hardly any chicken in the meal and it was in what must have been a Sharwoods sauce at best though more likely a supermarket bargain brand.

We were extremely disappointed with both the food and (especially) the service.
I could understand the slow service if it wasn't for the fact that the pub wasn't at all busy (unsurprising really - today my wife spoke to several workmates who had also had poor service experience at the Woodcocks - it's a shame she hadn't spoken to these people before we wasted a good part of our only day off this week and a substantial amount of our money) but there were more than enough staff to deal with the clientele so really there was no excuse.

I can honestly say that we will never visit The Woodcocks again. If I was crawling through the Sahara desert, dehydrated and gasping 'water, water' and the Woodcocks appeared as a mirage, I would skirt around it.

Even our local Wetherspoons puts the Woodcocks to shame both on quality of food and service.

One out of ten for both food and service is a charitable score.

 Great Night Out
Went to pub expecting to have a few pints and ended up at a wild party....the nights entertainment Mr Glenny Vee claims to be the worlds worst tribute act...bowie, bob Marley, Britney spears, elvis, michael jackson...from memory plus some others, quite funny and he really got the crowd going....I only planned to stay an hour or so, as we were on a pub crawl at the top end of town..but ended up dancing on the tables...like the rest of the pub....quite a chilled atmosphere, and not what I expected...

Walked in ordered my drinks at the bar took a seat ready to eat at 6 pm on a friday night.50 minutes later we were eventually asked if we would like to order food,i commented to the waiting staff about how long we had been waiting he simply sighed and looked down his nose! We ordered 2 main courses, nothing complicated. After being now sat for 1H25min enough was enough,we left and got chips on the way home. DONT GO TO THIS PUB ITS DROSS!

you pay for what you get
A two 4 one pub set in yuppie central, I go often the food is ok(its a chain pub you should be expecting microwaved foo!), but you do get table service. The staff are generally good if a little undermanned, but do their best, despite getting a lot of hassle. I would avoid the busier days but otherwise on par if not better than most brewers fayre, wetherspoons etc.

Stags Head Pub Lincoln don't bother
We booked Christmas day lunch at the pub at £36 per head. The opub was full and there was a good feeling at the start, this evaporated when we over half the guests - including ourselves - had to wait over 1hr to even get our starter, only to be told 1 of our choices had sold out! - we then waitied 40 mins for our main course - the 6 people at our table getting their plates spaced out over 12mins - then desert (cheese and bisuits) was warm, sweaty and the cheddar hard on the edges - it looked as if it had been standing next to the cooker for a few hours. We didn't get the coffee and mince pie as promised on the menu.
I paid £215 for the table in November with strict instruction on paying the balance in full by December 18th.
We complained about the time it was taking to serve us - as did many others - and were told take it or leave it
The service was rubbish, the food luke warm, presentation crap and attitude by the staff something I wouls have expected from an Iranain Jail and not a Lincoln pub

 Rubbish!
Myself and my partner took our mums for a meal on Frdiay 5 Dec 08. The service was slow (over 50 minutes for 3 salads and a steak on a not so busy evening!) - the steak was over cooked and leather like (despite being asked for medium) - the chips were like left over scraps there was a black hair in my salad (i have blonde hair) - the second order for drinks never arrived - will not be going back again!

 Woodcocks Function Facilities
My son booked the function room fo his twins Christening on 12 Oct 2008. I went to see the room on Mon 29 September and discussed the decorations I wanted to put up. I spoke in great detail about how things were going to be arranged and was told to go at 12.00pm on the day, when they opened to decorate the room. This morning 6 Oct, my daughter in law got a phone call to say that they had been trying to get in touch with her, which with 5 month old twins wasn't going anywhere, on a totally different number, to tell her that someone else had booked the room and that they could no longer have the the chosen areas, they was prepared to stick us in a back room for the same money. I had already heard from one of the staff about people complaining about them so I am confident that their service is diabolical and disgusted that they could let them down so easily at such short notice.

well must i point out to everyone that goes to the poacher that it is not the complete fault of the staff for this 'unwillingness' maybe if the customers were not as arrogant, more helpful to the staff eg they ask u which one a certain meal is and u all just stare at them like there a complete idiot, amazingly thats not very nice, i would say before they start to treat u with manners u would repeat it back. It goes both ways. Also a pub is a social place, would u rather have ur waitressing staff to be zombies, people have lives outside of their jobs and would like to keep them...and the ant problem is the fault of the establishment....they really do need to work that out...

 Okay, that's it really!
Okay pub, not the grottiest I've been in, but not the best. If you like a 'family atmosphere' you would be advised to go elsewhere. If on the other hand you want a pub where no one would bring kids then this is the pub for you. Locals can be friendly and bar staff are approachable once you get past the 'local pub' ambience.

What a gem of a find
What an absolute find, we were told about this food pub by some friends and how good there meals were, this must have been the ubnderstanment of the year. A country pub seving high quality food, quickly and to a large number of dinners, what a treat.
If your ever in need of a night qwhere your quaranteed to have a great meal, relaxed service and traditional beers on tap then go to the Pyewipe Inn. One word of advise book up in advance we tried to get into the restaurant on either a saturady night or sunday lunch for that weekend but no joy. the admosphere in the bar where we did eat was eaqualy as good, Enjoy

Sharon at The Duke William has spent alot of time researching what the customer requires from a tasteful glass of wine, the new wine list offers a large selection of high class wines at very competative prices.

 give it a chance
We regularly go to Woodcocks and we have noticed a massive increase in food quality and service. The meals are very good value and the staff work hard and are friendly but sometimes short in numbers. The menu is varied and the beer well kept with a good selection of wines. This is a value for money pub/restaurant give it a try!.

 Lincoln - Disappointing
I'm sorry to say that I had a meal yesterday and although the food was ok, my vegetarian friend had very little to choose from; the chicken escalope had apparently been taken off the menu a long time ago but yet it was still written on the menu; the bar girl was rude and there were black ants on the table. I was dissapointed after having been a few times and enjoying it!

 SUPERB!!
An absolute gem in the heart of residential Lincoln. I couldn't believe my luck in finding such a welcoming traditional pub. The atmosphere was everything a tradional pub should be, warm, friendly and relaxed, and to top it off the beer was wonderful and very well kept. May such establishments have a very long reign!!

Nice friendly pub with good music events
The Jolly Brewer is a very friendly pub that keeps the beer flowing. The best bit about this pub is its open mic night every wednesday. Just turn up before 8 and put your name down if you wanna play. Definitley worth a visit.

 Food was without doubt 'unreal'
We have been on a few occasions now each time we have always been welcomed by the friendly staff, and then served with fantastic food (the wine is very good to). We wanted to let others know of what a find we have found. The place is kitted out with no expense spared, the chairs even feel quality (if this makes sense) Try it out for yourselves, if you donít enjoy the whole atmosphere then I will promise to eat another of their steaks ... 8-P

 improvements noticed.
I have recently eaten at The Woodcocks and found the food and the service to be very good. The Inn i believe has being taken over by new management and the improvements are obvious. I would recommend to ohthers to try and give the place another go.

 Fantastic warm welome!
Turned up in Lincoln to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. Had a meal and stumbled upon Martha's. Couldn't believe it! It was full of really friendly people who made us feel instantly welcome and relaxed. The music was our scene too. Heavy! Sinclair (joint proprietor), and all the customers helped to make our weekend. Thanks you guys. Hope to see you again before too long. We can thoroughly recommend Martha's to everyone who enjoys an alternative experience.

What a great pub. But this has been closed for quite a few years. I enjoyed a lot of time there as bar/cellarman/customer. It was one of the best meeting places in Lincoln which catered for all walks of life, It is missed by many people.

 Great real ale pub
This pub is great for real ale drinkers. It has at least 8 Different ales on at all times. They also stock real cider and continental beers. It is close to lincolns station and football ground. It has pool table football table beer garden and car parking.

We visited this pub for many years & the food was always to a high
standard. It is now under new
management & as gone down hill. The salmon fishcakes were
served in batter with hardly a trace
of salmon the vegetables were
tasteless. We will not be visiting here again.

 Down hill
Last night I took the family for a meal there. Ordered two curries one Spanish chicken and a beef stew dish.

Firstly there was no rice so we had to choose alternatives to be served with the food. When the food came, the beef stew was dry on the edges where it was obviously micro waved. One of the poppodoms came with a fly as an extra. We informed the staff who simply replaced the poppodom with two others. At the end of the meal, I had to mention that I would only pay 75% of the bill for the poor food quality. But no they could only give me a 20% discount. So I refrained from tipping. In my opinion its only a numbers game before you eat somebodyís spit, or contract food poisoning. Don't go there. This pub should not even be on this web site! I will be looking to inform the food standards authority!

Wide choice of very well kept ales and cider too.
Great pub. You realise what a good pub is when you live abroad. Great choice of very well-kept ale and cider too, good value food, friendly staff and homely atmosphere. No flashing lights or big screen. A pub where you can enjoy your beer and your mates or your wife's company.

 slow service
Takes an age to get served even when the place isn't busy. I once waited for over fifty minutes (I had to go to the bar to remind them about my order) for a burger one lunchtime...they'd told me it'd take twenty minutes. Beer is a good price, though is it worth the time it takes to get your pint?
