 Geat Bar - Naughty Bouncers
Fab bar - busy and has a really good vibe. Bouncers do a very good flirtatious job of making girl's feel welcome. Shame it is part of their job and all pretence but still good fun....... Ben is great eye candy!

 Relaxed
A friendly locals' pub, pretty relaxed. We're foreigners (Australian) and get along with the locals just fine. Great pub for good beer, 5 real ale pumps with a range of Tring and Nethergate beers, amongst others.

Yes, a bit rough looking from the outside (though the building is interesting) - anyway, inside is where you drink. The patio out the back makes up for the roadside facade.

I visited the Radcliffe after booking half an hour before on 23/9. there was no record of our booking( it was not at all busyat the time) and the manager made us feel unwelcome. waiting staff good--Ditch the manager-he was rude! Spoil the mood of the evening I am afraid Food good .Rating reflects poor managerial style sadly :(

 Brilliant
This is just what this neighbourhood needs - excellent pub, restaurant wonderful, and the food is terrific. It is a freehouse, and they have really done well - local real ale from Buntingford, even local ingredients, and I don't just mean a bit of farmers cheese - I had Goat Curry as a special which was farmed about a mile away! They are even open for breakfast in the morning. What more do you need?

 Overall a great dining experience
I am really pleased with the transformation. The rooms are light and airy and the food is cooked to perfection. I found the service well balanced- not too intrusive, but there to offer suggestions and recommendations if asked. Definitely worth a visit.

The Angels Reply is a good pub.
On a rainy day with kids, it is often difficult to find things to do. This pub offers a friendly environment, an indoor childrens play area and great food. Jo and Mandy have run the pub for many years now and have very good standards. We enjoy visiting this pub and would happily recommend it.

 ok low cost family diner
if you are desperate for something to eat that is inexpensive and isn't a burger; if you have old people or kids with you, this is ok.
not great but not awful either - as long as you're not going there for the ambience.

Gone down hill since the summer
This place was really looking up towards the summer, it was packed every weekend and the atmosphere was electric. Sadly around midsummer something went terribly wrong and the pub really went downhill, I mean you weren’t even allowed to wear sandals in the middle of summer!!
I have been a regular visitor and the last 6 months has seen a rapid decline. Each weekend gets less and less people in, its one of those buildings that needs to be at least half full or it feels empty, the door staff have a bad attitude & the toilets are like something out of a horror film! I would recommend avoiding if you can. Try The Ivory on Brand Street, much better in my opinion - that’s when you can get near the bar, it’s always packed!

 A real find
This is how pubs used to be. A local for locals, though welcoming to visitors, well-kept beer and an unspoilt interior. Well worth a wander along Upper Tilehouse Street.

 My Opinion!
I've been going to Corn Exchange for a while now and have always had quite a good night - no fights, problems getting served at the bar etc! Although I do agree that it still needs some improvements made i.e. the toliets and dance floor. I find that the crowds make it a better night, although this then does cause problems as the dance floor is way too small and the space around the dance floor is too big. The music is varied i.e. some RnB to some Queen, but many people in there seem to like it - including me, probably because I've had a few - most liekly ditto for the others too!! They have also really come down on I.D checks and are now asking people to come in wearing smarter clothes i.e. no ripped jeans, sports wear etc. I have found the Bouncers to be 'Okay' as I have had no problems within, but they could learn some more people skills and be a little bit more helpfull when fights break out in or out on the establishment. Both friday and saturdays nights are as good as each other! Corn Exchange after a few drinks in The Red Heart is the best place in Hitchin to end up in. Try it for yourselves!!

 Good for ale
Good, well-kept ales make a pleasent change to other local pubs in the area.

Nethergate and Wychwood ale available.

Can be smokey but the ales make a vist worth while.

No food, but close to McD's (if you're desparate) or other fast food within 5 minutes walk towards town.

 Rubbish..nightmare come true!!!
Have been out to london, bham and never had any troble and a wicked night! Went to Corn exchange, had to wait 30mns outside because the bouncers were being really rude, didn't get served that quick (took 20 - 30 mins), packed out dancefloor, glasses smashed everywhere, and to top it off we had ignorant bouncers to deal with too! Very appalling, if you want to go somewhere tacky then choose corn exchagne guarantee it will put you off hitchin! Will NEVER go out there again!

 Good pub
One of my favourite pubs in Hitchin, rather small but i quite like that, as you never have to wait for too long at the bar. The bouncers are very friendly and not at all arsey. Drinks are reasonably priced, and there is a jukebox at the back, which is quite good fun, even if the barstaff did cancel my choices when I put Pinball Wizard on 3 times in a row! The toilets are too small and there are not enough, but this is the case at just about every pub in Hitchin, so you kinda get used to it, and it doesn't exactly ruin the evening! A good place to have a few drinks and a chat before heading of to the corn or the ivory later in the evening.

Every One gives the corn Stick
I am not sure if I am supposed to use this board but I felt I should quickly say thank you to Louisa for her comments. Although not all positive (would be happy to discuss further) I feel fair.
It is a shame that my venue is only ever talked about with regard to Fri/Sat nights. We have worked hard to try & change the image of the venue over the last 13 months away from a night club but I feel we still have a little further to go. We under took extensive refurbishment in January & have introduced better service standards in all areas. We are committed to continuing this in the years to come.

I feel we are some what victims of our own success with regard to the weekend trade. The Corn Exchange has much more to offer than just a venue for the weekend.

I would like to take this opportunity to invite any readers of this site to try our new menu in the hope that we can obtain your feedback & demonstrate to you that we are a Pub for all occasions.

I am happy to offer a 20% discount on your food bill (drinks not included) when you visit us. Please ensure that you bring a copy of this post to avoid any confusion.

Regards

David Copperthwaite

 Everyone gives the corn stick...
but actually it's a pretty good night out. Yes, the toilets are too small, and yes the bar is too small (but i prefer to go to the pub for a while before anyway), and yes there are quite a few fights around closing time (the bouncers just watch, because once they're out the door it's not their business) but there is a reason why it is packed every friday and saturday. The are strict enough on the door for it not to be filled with 17 yr old rude boys, but they don't id everyone. The cliente aren't quite like the lot you will find at the Ivory, but I find everyone very friendly. I would recommend that you give it a try, if your are looking for a fun night out, the Corn is a good place

 Naff
Local pub for local people. Would personally avoid if i were an outsider. Pretty grotty looking from the outside too, which would make me question why an outsider with the slightest bit of common sense, would want to go in anyways. I'm only giving it a one on the basis of it having a toilet, parking, pool table, and beer.

 Cool Enough
Definitely a nice pub, themed with a classic victorian pub ora about it. Good for in the summers as it has a lovely patio round the back. Only really issue is the size of the bar...the room in which the bar is situated, is cramped, and becomes very overcrowded, with the likelyhood of people stepping on your toes, and spilling beer/drink down you on at least 3 occasions. Those with high blood pressures and closterphobic tendencies should perhaps ask a friend to buy drinks. Lack of seating perhaps is an issue? Still worth going to.

 Naff
Dead pub, with old age range, with a strict local or ***** off personality about it. From past experience, i would advise outsiders not to bother their arses. Even those of close quarters to the pub, and with any sort of self respect, to also avoid.

Better than most pubs in Hitchin...
Nicely renivated pub, with the age range mostly consisting of 25 to 40, but accepting of younger audiences. Dj at the back of the pub, so as you can imagine, the closer you get to the front, the older the generation becomes! Friendly enough place, situated in town, easily enough to reach, with bouncers, so no underage likely to get in. Better than the majority of pubs in Hitchin. Worth a going to. Trying to be critical of the place, though i've never seen a fight seed from there, nor any problems with drinks/staff/people. Having evaluated this pub, i've realised I probably should go more often...

 Worth a look.
Age ranging from about 18-23. Cool enough atmosphere, once guaranteed to be thriving with underage drinkers, now having bouncers, has turned into a slightly more adult, indie/rock sort of pub, with little trouble, and a very laid back personality about the place. Friendly staff, often lively atmosphere, good selection of beers. Only disheartening thing is perhaps the time it takes to get served and the shuddy toilets. Other than this, good, friendly enough pub. Worth going to.

Definitely a bar worth going to in Hitchin. Friendly enough atmosphere, age ranging from about...20-25 ish? (don't quote me on that) and with local talented DJ's spinning uplifting and funky house. Only problem i would say is size of the place. Very Small. Can become a little overcrowded. But still well worth a looking! Very nice layout for its size. A modern Contemporary look (if that's not too much of a head blag)

 Average
With the likes of Penthouse deteriating with its shuddy, out of date, 80's nightclub feel (not to mention its 50 thousand lights system, and only about...2 work?) and with only the Ivory being a real threat (the age range there is 30+ at least) The Corn Exchange is probably the best night you're going to have in hitchin (i never said a good night...i just said the best possible!) (oh and furtherly...i haven't yet been to Zest since i heard of their obscure procedures of entry...something about taking your ID details of your driving license? So that could be good, but i doubt from what ive heard) The Corn (as its so often obriviated to) varies in style of music, but the DJ's in there are an utter joke. They don't even mix. and jump from style to style. the tempos all over the place, mixing from house, to garage, back to house, then rnb *though having said this, it does seem to work, because the dancefloor is packed every friday saturday night BUT this could be because the dancefloor is small* Then you've got the ever so small toilets. Corn Exchange gets overcrowded, and its dancefloor is minor. Good place to look for a fight aswel...or watch one...guarantee every weekend 2 large groups of pissed up lads will come bounty hunting out the front doors, slamming pound to pound of flesh, breaking as many facial bones of eachothers, and tearing up as much t-shirt they can grapple onto. All in all, i'd say spend abit more cash and go to the likes of london or cambridge. its only 10 quid on the train either way, and if you're sly enough, you can bunk the train! If you are really strapped for cash, and security tagged to the boundries of hitchin, then yes, Corn Exchange it is.

 Check out the Corn...
With the demise of the Penthouse's sound system, the ludicrous door policy at Zest, and the lack of personality at Ivory, Hitchin is very lucky to have such a great venue as the newly re-furbed Corn Exchange.

Manager Dave Copperthwaite takes great pride in providing Hitchin with THE BEST venue. His dedicated staff are polite and efficient, and the door is well managed ensuring a great, safe night out!

If you fancy meeting up with friends for a bite to eat at lunchtime, the food is always spot on and the huge Sunday lunches are to die for!

The new DJ's are excellent and play to accomodate all tastes. However, if you're serious about having a top night, make sure you come to the next Addiction night on Easter Sunday. The last one in February was a real eye-opener and showed the other clubs how to stage a truly memorable night!

With a fantastic (s'cuse pun), mix of tunes ranging from Funky house through to uplifting, and anthemic trance, the Corn provided the good folk of Hitchin with one of the best nights so far this year!

Make sure you go there at Easter, in fact, make sure you go there - anytime!

The Corn is the mutts!

depends on who you're with and when you go!
Corn Exchange really does vary. You'll either have a wicked night out or a really shoddy one. I like it, I don't go every weekend at all but I do point out their toilets are rediculously small & never have toilet roll! But, the music is good (if you like house, dance but I personally don't prefere rnb) and they sometimes do drink offers. it's really nice on weds nights with candles and cheap drink deals! My personal opinion is no matter where you go, as long as you're with the right minded crowd and you attempt to make an effort, it'll be good!

I noticed Nicks comment. Cant help pointing out That its not part of a chain of pubs. He has obviousely not been there lately as it is the same as it has been for the last 9 years.

What a shame that he has chosen to record incorrect vitriol on the website . it is offensive and an insult to the work of the late landlord and his wife ,who still holds the licence.

Used to be my favourite pub in Hitchin, the place has been ruined by some evil corporate Irish theme pub chain. Centuries of history destroyed by their gimmicky makeover. An insult to the memory of every person who has ever lived in Hitchin.
