 worst pub ever
This was a horrible experience. We had to wait over an hour for 2 bowls of chips.

We ordered a coke, half a fostes and a g/&t, with 2 bowls of chips this cost over £11!!!!.

We will not return

Its Going to be a Real Ale Pub !!
Great news for all you real ale drinkers, the word is on the streets that it's going to become another Fat Cat outlet, great news for all those east of the city !!!

 Sunday let down
I have been here several times in the past as they always done a veggie option to go with the usual Yorkshire puss, roast potatoes etc. However on my last visit there was no veggie option whatever except the normal meat menu minus meat at the same cost!!!
My feeling was that it was just too much hassle for them in reality.

 Good food quite pricey
Visited the restaurant with 10 friends at lunchtime on August 5th 2011. Attention was good, wait not too long and the food when it arrived was hot and tasty.

 Beautiful riverside setting
Lovely place to sit and read by the river with a good book or a bit of work to catch up on. Food served all day so you can eat when you fancy. Brilliant customer service, efficient, friendly and humorous. Will be making the most of it while the sun shines.

 sallys birthday bash
It was the first time i'd been in the lord rosebery pub since its renovations. I'm a 30 year old man who doesnt drink alcohol, but i had a lovely evening. There was a dj who kept the karaoke going, and a nice bloke behind the bar helped organise the cakes candles and singing Happy Birthday. It also had a nice vibe in the pub and was kitted out with a plasma tv with the footie on. I would recomend having a good night out here.

 Great Pub
New Managers have recently taken this pub over and I found them to be Friendly and welcoming the food is brilliant and the pub is comfortable. Great place to go for lunch or a drink.
Sunday, May 16, 2010Rating: rosettes

 Not wanting locals
Used to be a great locals pub but now goes out of it's way to keep locals and Brits out. Wants to be pub just for the Aussies.
Does nothing really well. Muzak playing from speakers over the bar which all but puts a stop to all conversation.
When new tenants took over no tv, music etc, Now showing Sky Sports whether it is being watched or not.
Food now being served and being called home cooked. How can food prepared in a pub kitchen be called home cooked.
Thursday, May 13, 2010Rating: rosettes

Although your average back street pub the landlady and locals are fantastic company and i was made to feel welcome. They have a very chatty parrot and the place is now clean and comfortable. although they dont sell real ale the beer was tasty and a fair price. Worth a look if you want a nice friendly chat.

 family friendly
visited march 2010, great spot, looks a bit tired from the outside, but well worth a visit, fantastic food, great beer, perfect for children. all the staff were helpful, friendly and accomodating for a larger family with children. Even supplied colouring paper and crayons for the little one. Has a little games room out the back, will definitely revisit on one of our regular tips to norfolk.

Visited today for lunch and was more than disappointed...not welcoming at all, latte machine not working,no cream or brown sugar with coffee..room was cold, toilets not as clean as could be, the room smelt of cigarette smoke and the window cleaner (though very pleasant) was cleaning the insides of the windows whilst we ate...needless to say we wont be dining there again..not a professional set up at all.....and priced fairly high too....maybe lessons to be learnt here.....maybe from restaurant across the road at The Oaks...sorry but true.

 gibralta gardens update
hello all. i maybe could agree with recent comments, as i had read some bad reviews in the past.
If you look back at the history of the place then it all come's together as the country pub inside the city As a relativly new customer to the gibralta gardens the past few months have been great! Bad reviews don't do the place any justice. in my opinion the weak links have been taken out of the chain & i regulary eat & drink there.
My husband & I think the food is great, the staff are great an all in all it makes a fantastic meal out.
with an ever changing desserts & specials board this is a place we love to eat an whoever read this post at least try once
I went there for the Sunday Carvery yesterday, talk about value for money ive never seen so much beef on my plate not to mention the quality an choice of vegetables on offer, remined me of grandm'as home cooking. This is a must for anyone looking for a place to eat good traditional english fair on a sunday

 Avoid !
Was there in January, the landlord is a hugely unpleasant man who swears like a trouper, in my presence he banned a female customer just because she didn't reply to his (profane) greeting.

 diasppointing sunday lunch
Mozzorella and tomato salad - we asked the waiter if it was real mozzorella, he said yes, it's Danish from Cash and carry. The tomatoes too?

I ordered Turkey dinner no sausage and bacon, no stuffing, as was served with both - the waitress aid she'd forgotten. the potatoes and yorkshires overcooked, the brocolli almost raw - with 5 beans between three people!

Nut roast turned out to be a pile of soggy rice, tasteless and ugly looking - the waitress aid there are nuts in it

the cook had gone home

At £12.95 per head it was a waste of money

The most over-rated pub in Norwich. Yes it has lots of different ales, but it also has all that they attract, such as pompous pricks who seem to think it too much of a chore to let people past them to go to the toilet etc. It's ok, but by no-means the best. The worst part is feeling sheer relief at leaving a horribly over-crowed pub with a bad atmosphere, then hearing your mates rave about how good it was the next day!
Sunday, May 25, 2008Rating: rosettes

After checking this site last year & ever intrepid it's only 8 miles from home we thought we would just see for ourselves, we have now returned 5 times having had good food from a varied selection, served hot by friendly/polite staff. what more could you want.
Saturday, February 24, 2007Rating: rosettes

Traditional pub... food, real ales, garden.

Even has a bar billiards table.

A rare find!
Monday, February 19, 2007Rating: rosettes

One of the best pubs in the UK five minutes walk from where I live!
Monday, February 19, 2007Rating: rosettes

 Pretty average
Pretty average back street locals pub. Run of the mill beers. Uncomfortable seats. Used to have a decent bowls lawn. Not worth going out of your way for but I dare say the locals like it.

A delightful pub with fantastic food and service
We had a wonderul meal at the Pelican last Saturday. I'd really like to thank all the staff there for making it such fantastic night. It's good to see that a village / country pubs can really flourish these days, when so many others get it so wrong. The food and service were absolutely excellent, and good value too, especially considering some of the over-priced rubbish that other pubs in the area serve. I especially liked the new resturant area - it had a fine dining look, but in a really relaxed atmosphere. well recommended
Friday, February 16, 2007Rating: rosettes

G man
This pub is brilliant! The most briliiantest thing about it is its where I met the mother of my brilliant son.

They must put something in the beer.......!
Wednesday, February 14, 2007Rating: rosettes

 excellent service
the service in this popular norwich establishment is excellent and is matched by its friendly atmosphere. There has been a few changes in personel recently and i was sorry to see one member of staff leave (morris) as she was exceptional.
Monday, February 12, 2007Rating: rosettes

 Expect a Warm Welcome!
This pub is something which is becoming rare, a city centre pub where you can go in and feel like a local! Everybody gets a warm welcome, it feels and looks like a traditional country pub - the food and beer are great and so are the people! Expect friendly customers and staff and a real mixture of backgrounds and ages.
Friday, February 9, 2007Rating: rosettes

A Warm freindly pub that is always attracting a varied and interesting crowd! It has a very warm atmosphere- The landlady and landlord are always very welcoming, and a total scream !The bar staff are great too, Nice food and lots to do! Drinking and boardames to play, lovely food, open fire place and excellent service! ++++ TOP NORWICH PUB
Thursday, February 8, 2007Rating: rosettes

 Not one like it
Its lovely to find a traditional pub still about. It is full of characters and that is just the staff.
Great home cooked food and always a warm welcome.
It is so refreshing to find a traditional pub still about instead of these trendy wine bars.
Thursday, February 8, 2007Rating: rosettes

Well what can I say, it used to be a delightful place, great service etc etc...and then one day, the great service left. Her name was Morris. Please get her back, you need her.
Thursday, February 8, 2007Rating: rosettes

 A special find
You won't find this pub on any old High Street listing, you need to come and find it for yourself. Once you have, you will never want for another regular local hostelry. In fact many travel back from miles around once they have sampled the delights, the welcome, the fine fayre and the adorable landlord and landlady. I dare you to seek it out...... I dare you not to!!

Little Scottish Fella
 Country schtyle in shity shentre
I've had many an evening that has left me feeling twinkly and warm inside.
The staff are a hoot, the beer's tip top, the food looks good and tastes even better, the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming.
I've had far too many new years there, but why change it if it works?
Thursday, February 8, 2007Rating: rosettes

I forgot to say how nice the food is - great homemade food and I've enjoyed every meal... hence my athletic physique
Thursday, February 8, 2007Rating: rosettes

 best ever watering hole!
For seventeen years this has been my favourite pub there is - and there's no sign of that changing! The landlady has the most infectious (and loud!) laugh, and the landlord has more piercings than a piece of fretwork, but don't be fooled by appearances! This is a warmly-welcoming traditional pub traditionally run, with well-kept beers, good food and wonderful company. In fact, it's so good, the customers hardly ever seem to leave!!!
Thursday, February 8, 2007Rating: rosettes

 The lovely morris
This pub has gone downhill terribly since the departure of one of the world's best barmaid's. He name was Morris. I thought she was beautiful - I liked to look at her over a pint of ale. Other than that it is a good pub.
Thursday, February 8, 2007Rating: rosettes

Not only is this my favourite pub in the world, but whenever I recommend it to anyone they always love it too. It's a proper English pub - traditional, welcoming, with great food and the friendliest staff you could ask for. I would urge everyone to pay it a visit.
Thursday, February 8, 2007Rating: rosettes

I love this pub - the atmosphere is warm and welcoming and the people are friendly and entertaining. The bar staff are great too - especially the tall one with the brown hair, she's my favourite. Hurrah to this fine example of a great british pub x

A fantastic pub that is warm, friendly and serves great food. The staff are welcoming and very entertaining and the landlord and lady are extremely accomodating. I haven't found a finer pub in Norwich, or anywhere else for that matter!

 Wonderful Food
i visited the white horse with my husband the food was delightful i would it 9 out of ten the staff were very friendly and the barman was very funny

i would visit this pub a again in later life

 very poor dining experience
waited 1.5 hours for our booked table
were told we could only wait for table in the smoking area
food was below average
were jaunted at by manager
Sunday, January 21, 2007Rating: No rosettes

 Give it a go.
Good food and service. Don't know what pub the others were talking about! Friendly, smiley staff that got on well with each other and the customers. Give the place a go... you will be pleased with the food and enjoy the company of the staff!
Saturday, January 6, 2007Rating: rosettes

Nice pub, shame about the wait
Freezing cold dining room, bar area not much better. Mix-up on order, pot of tea didn't arrive. When it did, it was tepid and returned. Meal mostly OK when it eventually arrived , though 30-minute wait and scampi batter almost empty. Bar staff unwelcoming though waitress service friendly. Never again.

 More overpriced Blandness
Revisited pub since change of owner with high hopes, wrong! Tasteless pork that you could spit peas through, as my dear old Mum would say, imploding detachable pastry that had to be reduced to a paste with gravy before it would stick to the fork yet reasonable veg. Will not be returning

December 06 - best to avoid
Re-visited this pub as had eaten there several times a year over the last 6 years. New owners still have just about the same menu, so you get used of what you can eat ... or not! Besides the very old looking salad we all had and the cold onion rings, the steak dishes were fine; sister had steak burger with cheese - shame just 2 cheese slices (tesco specials) where dumped ontop the salad; were going to order sweets but noted how there were prepared by staff in full view of us eating in the dining room - hair everywhere, no apparent food hygiene methods; noted the Christmas menu was £29.95 for a 4 course meal (nothing special there and way overpriced for what you got). All in all, think I will avoid it for the next 6 years and hope that the menu and food improves.
Monday, December 4, 2006Rating: rosettes

 exceptionally poor service in restaurant
waited to order and had to find waitress, waited for drinks and had to remind waitress, waited for bill and tried to find waitress, she was just leaving having forgotten that she still had customers!!! Unbelievable. Wish we had left without paying, noone would have noticed.
Friday, November 17, 2006Rating: No rosettes

 Nothing better in the city
Excellent atmosphere, good offers with happy hours and meal deals. Brillant quiz, which is always busy. Plus the bitters are always on and there are no posers in there! In my opinion the best pub in Norwich.
Thursday, November 9, 2006Rating: rosettes

 good all rounder
Tuesday, November 7, 2006Rating: rosettes

After eating Sunday lunch with 4 members of my family, we were asked to leave as we did not all have drinks on the table. I saw nothing around the pub indicating time limits on drinks, and did not feel 1 hour was unreasonable for a meal and drink? I think I have witnessed a case of a landlord keeping his focus on turnover rather than customer satisfaction. I enjoy frequenting various pubs as an avid real ale fan, but will not be returning to this venue

purchsed the most disgusting ploughmans lunch ever. Flies in lettuce, hairs on plate, cheap nasty ham watery cheese, bad manager unwilling to except responsibility for his food, said he never gets complaints. WARNING - do not eat at this place.

First timer and was recommended by about 10 people
Visted this pub for a sunday lunch on 3.9.06. Oh my god!! It was gorgeous. The meals are definitely 'proper' portions - in fact it is the first time a roast dinner has ever defeated me or hubby who plumped for the steak&kidney pud which would feed 2 people easily. Definitely going back there and soon!!

Just awful - sit outside with your own picnic
We declined the vegetables as they were disgusting. The chips - well how do you get them wrong in a place like this? and then the deliberations with management. The chef (?) was with the Queen Mother! the what? insisted we pay or he would call the police and insisted that he had had no complaints. just read the web comments going back over tha last year or two. England at its worst.

 Good food, relaxing, very nice
Lovely atmosphere next tot he river good food, and good service, very good play area, arcades etc.
as for the freezer comment below - as much as i would like each desert i buy to be painstakingly crafted totally from scratch in less than 5mins by a legion of cooks - its not really going to happen.

 Kids playground
Ideal pub if you like posing, taking drugs and trying to act cool.

Bitter is always off and it's very, very expensive for the quality. They even charge you a pound (seriously!) to pay by card.

Avoid (unless you're 16!)

 Cool and classy!
This is a nice pub in a nice part of town. The drinks are ok priced, they do tasty bar food and I've always had good service.
The sound system is cool two and not too loud so you can enjoy a conversation!
Possibly only downside is that there is fairly limited seating considering how busy it gets on a weekend.

I was just loving the rating of no rosettes by the person who put popular with the pikies!
The Gibraltar appeals to many different groups of people and as someone who lives on the nearby estate but by no means the pikey sort, I would say that you have to keep an eye on your valuables anywhere - errr, it's called common sense. It's a nice local where you can sit by the river and chill with the added bonus of having a menu that's not that bad either.
Sunday, November 27, 2005Rating: rosettes

Great food, wonderful service!

As a reply to a post above regarding frozen desserts, how else can you expect to be able to choose from such a wide range of hot desserts?

Couldnt fault it.

Shame they took the pool tables & pinball machines away the old owners had upstairs, & the jukeboxes 'cos now it's all camp house stuff played. Used to enjoy the live bands every Friday & saturday night, tho' the new owners have tried hard to put on a range of entertainments.

When coming up to the pub from far away there is always something new going on, with the regualr dj's and entertainment to enjoyment never ends. the pub is a great enviroment for both gay and straight people, its a friendly place where evryone and anyone is welcome by our fantastic staff and owners!!!

 Better than the alternative!
This is my local, at the end of my street & I've been drinking here since I bought my house 8 years ago. Being gay but not into the scene I was a bit disturbed when I heard that the new owners were going to turn it into a gay pub & I'd have it right on my doorstep but Tony & Kenny have done a good job of keeping the troublesome element at bay & there's quite a nice welcoming atmosphere in the place. I'm by no means the regular I was since it changed (I can't stand dance muisc for a start!) but if friends invite me & my g/f up there we don't mind going!

 Bad service, even worse food
Went for meal, September '05. Never had such fatty tasteless roat beef, slices were almost as thin as gravy. Waitresses preparing desserts in full view of customers, constantly seen to be licking fingers throughout - how revolting! Pitiful that individual desserts (which are probably bought v. cheaply innbulk) also seen to be taken out of chest freezer and microwaved - then charged at exorbitant rates - we were disgusted.

Mrs Mystery Shopper
 Terrible Customer Service
Will never eat in this establishment again, not only was our food over an hour late but the staff didn't even have the decency to apologise for this and proceeded to hurl verbal abuse and profanities at us as we left. Staff here clearly can't handle the pressure of a busy restaurant and aren't intelligent enough to be professional.

 Best Gay Venue in Norwich
to be honest this is the best venue for gay people in east anglia, not only are staff friendly, the owners work there socks off all the time which gives the drinker an impression that the love the pub, atmosphere is great, music is excellant now that they have a new dj (Blondie) i think.. the pub in general is clean, tidy and well loved by everyone that frequents it.. Well Done Kenny and Tnoy for all your hard work..

The pub's great. It's really nice inside, in a nice area with great owners. Tony and Ken are SO funny and friendly. All the bar staff are nice and chatty, not sure about the sheep though? The well is so cool. All in all... a great place to be =D. Keep up the good work guys!!!

Mr B
 Best Gay Venue In Norwich
To be honest i think this is the best Gay venue in Norwich far better than the Castle which is not only out dated but generally grotty. The Catherine wheel, has fantastic Bar Staff, Great Atmosphere, Good Prices, Happy Hour, New Snack Menu early evening. Oh and Fantastic party atmosphere. Dont go thinking it is a mad party place, with the leather sofas you can chat, chill and relax whilst everything goes on around you....

 Saved the Day
Went to the Brick Kilns where we had Inexplicably poor service, despite booking a table.
Fortunately, the Recruiting Sergeant at Horstead saved the day - this pub never fails to impress.

 Inexplicably poor service
Stood waiting to be seated for a meal last night (8/5/05) and gave up after 10 mins. The pub wasn't even that busy. The barmaid and waitress did their best to avoid eye contact or acknowledge our presence. We had pre-booked a table as well. Fortunately, the Recruiting Sergeant at Horstead saved the day - this pub never fails to impress.

 Norwich Newest Gay Bar
Nice atmosphere, nice barstaff, nice interior. Fridays and Saturdays they have a resident DJ, who is gorgeous, playing pop, dance, chart, r'n'b, remixes and funky camp tunes. Also they have just introduced happy hour YAY!!!!!!

 email to pathfinder pubs
I visited this pub on Sunday 10th April, the place is a shambles! Only one large screen TV which is unwatchable such poor contrast & definition. You wouldnít know if it was showing the Premiership or a cricket match plus music playing so itís inaudible as well. I Gave up on watching the game what ever it was (nobody else was bothering either). I ordered a pint of Banks bitter the only cask ale available then sat in the restaurant area with a view to ordering Sunday Lunch. On inspection of the beer I found it was immersed in floating particles (the dregs of yeast possibly). In disgust I put it down & left to find a decent Pub (not difficult in Norwich). I only ever use this Pub for convenience as I live 3 minutes walk away. On previous experience I have had food orders go wrong & the TV is a pathetic standard. Why do you bother to pay sky when itís unwatchable? The only people that frequent this place are people from the local estate. Frankly itís not worth the 3 min walk from my house. If you would like some further criticism the place is run by inexperienced staff who wouldnít know cask ale from a glass of coke itís a joke you have a cask marque tick on your website, the state of decoration & cleanliness is bad. Donít you ever have anyone inspect your pubs?

 Traditional, friendly vibrant pub
This is the pub to come to whether you fancy a chilled pint in the beer garden or a glass of wine by the fire. It has a relaxed, fun and funky atmosphere. Different nights on offer- quiz night, curry night, DJs so something for everyone.

 Excellent Breakfast with Excellent Music
Been here twice for an A1 fry up; fresh, plentiful and in a nice environment. It's been taken over recently and definately for the better - cool interior, better staff, better layout - and a decent sound system playing decent beats.
Go there!

My memories of the Mustard Pot
I used to visit the pub quite regularly from 1982 to 1991, and found it to be a very cosy pub, with exceptional cooked foods and an interesting selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.
