 Amazing and helpful cook
I have recently been diagnosed as a coeliac ( cant have any wheat or gluten) Donna the cook has been totally amazing sourcing food and adapting the menu to suit my needs, Doona has even found me gluten free lager. The meals have always been marvelous but Donna has gone the extra mile to accommadate my needs. There is an excellent choice of food for a coeliac. Doona has a seperate cupboard to store all her gluten free items in. Seperate fryer is used for chips so they are safe to eat for a coeliac as well. Best pub there is for food/ lager/beer and atmosphere.

Ref GED

I recall your visit. You complained the steak and ale pie had been frozen. The majority of our food is home made, at no time do we say that it has not been frozen, we usually serve fresh, but sometimes we have to freeze them. It does not affect the quality. You never touched yours, but the rest of the party ate most of theirs then you all demanded your money back. We reimbursed those people who were not happy with their meal. We serve good homemade food and have a good reputation. I am sorry you did not enjoy our food. If I had told you it,was freshly made when it I'm fact had been frozen, then I can understand your attitude it I didn't . Other customers in at the time were shocked at your behaviour.

We pride ourselves that we do all we can to make everyone welcome, especially those with disabilities. The pub that day was extremely busy with lots of families with young children, eating. Some of the children were so traumatised by the you giirl screaming and shouting they had to be taken outside. One family had to leave without eating their meal as their little girl was hyterical because the young girl was screaming and shouting so loudly. The welfare of all our customers is extremely important to us, disabled or able bodied. The young girl had been screaming and shouting on the Market Place we were surprised that the careers bought her into a very busy pub in the first place. She obviously felt distressed by a lot of people. I gave her a glass of water to try and calm her down. The careers said they were trying to calm her down, but she had been screaming and shouting for 20 minutes to half an hour, with no sign of her calming down. I felt that if she was outside she may feel better. I am sorry you felt as you did, that was not my intention.

We regularly have groups of youngsters with disabilities with their careers, they have a meal and really enjoy themselves. We make them welcome and they return time and again.

 Ignorance
I have been to this pub a couple of time and had enjoyed my visit but after my last visit I will not be returning and will be not recommending this pub again.
I took a child with special needs to this pub with 2 carers. Unfortunately the child became upset and distressed. Both carers were busy trying to calm her down. The landlady came over and told us to leave. She was ignorant to the needs of this child. She did not ask if there was anything she could do to help, she just kicked us out on the street to deal with a very difficult situation.

Beautifully situated pub with amazing views across the Drone Valley to the Derbyshire Peak District. Up to EIGHT real ales always available. No food but you don't need it because of the quality of the beer! Please note that this pub is NOT in Dronfield but in the adjacent village of Apperknowle!

 Worst food ever
This pub served me and my friends the worst food I have ever come across when we complained the landlady threw us all out . I am a chef so when I politely sent it back and told them it was very poor standard I thought the landlady was going to beat us all up she came out shouting get out get out . I will never go back to the George and dragon again and now I know why it was empty

 Really good quality food
We went to the h & H last week and were surprised that we had to wait for a table, but after eating realised why, the food was brilliant, very hot and plentiful (maybe a bit too much for anyone watching their diet) my daughter went this week and was surprised how good it was and in fact we are all going back this weekend to try another dish but I am not making the mistake of not booking a table - can't believe we have sucgh a good pub for food within walking distance

Only been there about three times but love each visit. It is not the most well decorated and furnished establishment you will ever visit but Carl and Tina and their kids make you feel very welcome as do the locals. Reale Ale is excellent, food is fine with enormous portions. This pub is what a local should be. Ideal for walkers, cyslists and motor bikers. I love it.

I am looking forward to my stay at the Boathouse in July 2012. There are no doubts at all, that the food and accomodation will be up to it's usual good standard. To compliment the latter, Carol & Tony, I'm sure will be their usual welcoming selves and put themselves out to make my stay very pleasent.

 Fire Ash
Had what was a very well cooked meal here and was enjoying it until a man (who I later learned was the owner) opened the wood burner about 3 times and covered us, our table and my fish and chips in ash and filled the pub with smoke. A pleasant chap who had served us couldn't apologise enough and refunded my meal. He seemed quite embarrassed and had in fact mentioned to the owner that he was filling the pub with smoke. Maybe we'll go again when the weather is warmer and no need for a fire!

Nowhere near as good as a couple of years ago.....
We hadn't been to Il Romana for probably around two years, for various reasons....after ringing and booking a table I was assured by the sound of a familiar voice that all was the same. I'm not sure if we caught a bad night, but Il Romana used to have a great atmosphere, varied menu, great service, and very good food indeed, with a mix of European/italian/English dishes
. Given it was 8pm on a Saturday, there were two other couples in the restaurant, and we were given a very limited midweek menu. We asked for the al la Carte menu, but were told by the barman that the menu was virtually the same. We ordered from this menu in the end, and ordered prawns, panfried in garlic butter - imagining large, succulent prawns, fried in garlic butter. In reality, the prawns were no bigger than my partners thumbnail - and portion probably a couple of tablespoons, with very little garlick tast, presented with a couple of lettuce leaves, pepper rings and a grape....we were so dissappointed. Our main courses were better - my partner had sirloin steak @ £10.95 which was about right, but my sea bass fillets @ £17.95, although cooked well, were really not worth the money. They were cooked with sunblush tomatoes, in butter, and served with average pub veg in side dishes, and were very small - not how I recall Il Romana from times past. This was meant to be a special meal for a romantic occasion and I have to say, we felt very let down. There was no reason to complain as what we ate was cooked well, and the lady serving was very polite and professional, but, the quality of food was poor - two starters and two mains, for £47....the starters I would not expect even in a budget pub in terms of quality and display of the ingredients. It is such a shame as we have bought friends and business acquaintances here in the past, but could not do so based on this experience.

In my last comment on the 7th July, a return stay was predicted. I am pleased to say that on the weekend of the 20th August, such an event happened. This time, my comments can be up graded, no faults can be found and despite Carol & Tony always being busy, they still radiated the friendly and welcoming attitude towards guests. Although I could soon become part of the furniture, I am not only treated as a guest but as an old friend. No matter where I go in Derbyshire, if possible, the Boathouse Inn will always be the place I rest my head.

I first visited the Boathouse Inn was during October 09. The location was suitable for my needs as was the accommodation. The meals were satisfying with regards to their size, variety, quality and value for money. A warm, helpfull and friendly customer relationship was radiated by Carol & Tony . All of this prompted me to assure them of a repeat stay. This i will be doing in August 2010.

 county pub come back!!!
I've been going to this pub for many years, seen many new owners, and many thing change over the years,
The food is still good, could do with a bit more of a country feel to it, bar meals and good old chips cobs, ideal for walkers and horses riders.
Flower beds around the pub would make a big differance if they had a good weeding but over all it's still worth a visit,
Ideal for holding local events, already has a vintage car night first Tuesday in the month :-),
Good bridleways for horse riders, also has it's own mountain block in the car park.....

 Poor, poor, poor
My husband and I went out on a very rare occasion for what we would hope would have been a lovely meal. We were met with a scruffily dressed 'manager', who really didn't pay any attention to her clients, a young girl who wasn't trained properly and finally a meal that I'm sure would make any chef cringe, and there wasn't a 'chef' in this restaurant!! My goats chees tart was burnt and he'd covered it up with lettuce leaves, the innards of the tart, when I found them, were tasteless and very little of it, thank goodness. The supposed homemade chips, tasted like McCains home cooked chips!! No more comment on that! My husbands meal lacked the chips, he had fish and chips, and the fish batter was uncooked in places, and the fish grey, a sign of old stale fish. Unfortunately, I had no choice but to eat the food as I had just taken my insulin, I'm a diabetic, and if I hadn't eaten at this point I would probably have gone into hypo mode! We complained but that was a complete waste of time, she walked away and said I'll tell the chef, no sorry she slobbed away in her long jumper, leggings and sloppy shoes! This is supposed to be a good quality, medium piced evening restaurant, I think I would have preferred the fish and chip shop on the High Street, who we know are excellent at what they do! At the time of paying I would have preferred not to, but my husband was very tired and just wanted to get out, QUICKLY!! No apologies, no reductions, no sign of the slobby 'manageress'!! The young barmaid disappeared with my husband's credit card, at which point we did tell her that is something they sholdn't do, bad training. So a bad experience, of which I hope is never repeated and I will tell all my friends, colleagues etc. to avoid the place like the plague. Such a shame because as a business woman in Belper with many, many business connections we will spread the word. What a shame when it could have been so different!

Hare and Hounds - worth it
Iíve just read that this pub had turned into a ĎGlitzy wine barí??? Having eaten and drunk at this pub for the last 4 land lords I am slightly confused. It did have a Ďmakeoverí several years ago but not in that category. Recently with new tenants I can only praise this pub. A very friendly atmosphere with great staff and a good choice of bar snacks and meals. With the beer festival back on track and frequent entertainment itís well worth a visit.

me and my wife had a meal on sunday 5th.04.09 at the boat house inn.we had three adults and a childs witch with 3 pints came to 38 pounds wich i thought was a bit expencive. but the thing is that the plate size for an adult is the same size as a child. i myself could not get what i wanted on my plate because of the size of it .plus there was no stuffing. with the plate size i have paid 12 pound to much . to sum it up it was very poor value for money.

 Excellent, 5*+
We went to the White Hart/La Romana after hearing about it from a number of friends who had recently visited. We live in Derby so it was a bit of a drive, but absolutely worth it. Im not sure what Mr Peter Renolds is talking about. We honestly couldnt complain about a single aspect. The bar and restaurant staff were great all night, really friendly, I suppose you get out what you put in... And it was a nice suprise to learn that the new owners, owned a previous favourite, the bulls head in belper. Food was excellent, atmosphere great. With the planning of the restaurant it was easy to talk with the people sat near by and overall it was a great decision to visit - all round. Well done white hart/la romana!!

We booked a late lunch and were a little aprehensive. The Food was very nice and well presented, good value for money. The service was a little reserved but they were friendly enough.

A fantastic job has been done on the refurbishment. We had a lunchtime meal and will be going back for dinner one night.

Paolo is brill. Steve a bit cold.
Paolo and his food are brilliant. Steve is a bit cold and needs to interact a bit more. More choice of beer would improve things alot.

oh people i must yell out to the world the wonders of this pub, of which i am proud to call my local. Although my personal home is almost a mile away on foot, i shall always feel the call, and set off towards that, which is to me, my true home, the eclipse pub.
Now, although the music may always be loud, making it hard to hear a soul speak, a person is always made to feel welcome by the wonderful staff who will always do their best for you, and on request, will always, always learn your usual.

 Top-notch Italian Restaurant
Completely refurbished, La Romana restaurant at the White Hart is one of Derbyshire's top restaurants. Superb Italian food, reasonable prices, impeccable service, with a friendly atmosphere. As a friend recently said: Everything is done properly here. Bookings a must on Friday and Saturday nights.

 conviviality defined
this pub is all about the landlord whose character and the beer and food he serves means that while there are other pubs that are as good as this i've yet to find a better one. n.b. this is NOT a food pub (restaurant) but a pub that serves food.

Country pub turns into wine bar
Good Points:
beers, bench outside with great views.

Bad Points:
Outrageous that country pub has been turned into glitzy wine bar-
don't forget your sunglasses!
Real open fire replaced with some sort of living flame type thing.
If you're wanting a cosy drink in a country pub you'd be better off down the road in 'The Grey Mare'

 Well worth battling the elements
Truely excellent value hearty pub grub but only served Sunday lunchtimes. Unusual real ales (a plus point), spot on quality. Serious roaring fire at the right time of year. Probably the chirpiest landlord you'll meet. An oasis for tired, cold and wet walkers!

 Superfood
I know others on here have said great things about the food, but you really should try it. I plesently surprised to find a beauty salon annexed to the bub as well, meaning my wife had her nails done whilst i enjoyed another pint of the local 'leatherbritches'

 Excellent Pub
Jist returned back to Australia from a visit to Glossop at Christmas. Would highly recommend a visit to the Prince of Wales. Wonderful staff - so friendly and they really made you feel at home. The pub has so much character and the christmas decorations and open log fires were beautiful. Cannot wait until we return to have a pint or two. Cheers Chris

Its all very well raving over the food but the ale quality has taken a real nose dive whilst the prices have gone in the other direction. Is it a pub that sells food or rather, now,a restaurant that plays at selling beer?

 Excellent Village Pub
The Carpenters Arms is a family run country pub which has been with the Clements & Heraty family for over 70 years. They have a full range of facilities available for our enjoyment from hot and cold bar meals served daily to cask conditioned real ales. There are comfortable lounge areas and an outdoor beer garden. Walkers are particularly welcome. Why not set off from the pub on one of the many circular routes and finish off with a drink and something to eat.
There's a family room too with activities to keep the children occupied. You will always find a warm and friendly welcome at the Carpenters Arms
