We called here last week on our way back form my mum's funeral in Scarborough.A VERY good find - we didn't want to eat in a service station - and just turned off the motorway nearby hoping we'd find somewhere to eat. Amazing ! Delicious, home cooked food, veryfriendly staff, comfy surroundings and best of all we didn't have to pay for our grandson's mealas he's under five. .A REALLY fantastic place I'd high;ly recommend to all.

After reading some past reviews felt nervous about the standard of food and service. How wrong these past reviews are, staff couldn't do enough for you they were freindly and polite and kept checking things were ok all night. We started with chip butties in the afternoon which went down really well, then had the gold buffet in the evening. Chequers Inn Mrs A Wing Retford A great family pub
After a family day out, it was nice to come across such a beautiful pub just off the A1. The village it was located in was lovely and it was so nice to be welcomed with the children to such a friendly pub. The staff were very helpful and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The place was very clean and had a lovely garden to the rear where the children saw a boat on the chesterfield canal. The menu had so much variety and was freshly cooked. We will be visiting there again.

Having visited here by chance after seeing the sign just off the A1 for Retford we were very pleased with the service, food and ambience of this pub. After revisiting the Chequers at Ranby after a couple of years, I can't believe a pub that nce had a great reputation for superb food, friendly staff and a fantastic location too has gone completely down the pan. Such a shame. Dead plants in the outdoor planters, surly staff and why the heck it should take them nearly 45 minutes to serve our pretty so-so lunch baguettes when there was hardly anybody else in the place is a complete mystery. How can they have let such a great pub slide into naff service and food? Needless to say, we won't be going back.

Rufford Arms Kit Mansfield Great!
I've been two this pub on two occasions, the first for my auntie's wedding reception (upstairs) and the second for a carvery on a Wednesday afternoon. I found the stairs to be quite a hassle for the reception, because we had a lot of members of the family with prams which were heavy to take upstairs. I also thought the food was horrendous - later learned that my aunty had used an outside caterer! However, the carvery was absolutely fantastic. Only £3.99 a head - bargain, 3 meats to chose from (I had a selection of the three - delicitous!) and the trimmings were cooked to perfection. The boiled potatoes were a little sweet but i think that was probably more the season than anything else! Definitely going again.

We recently booked a table for 12 at the Chequers and to say the least it was disappointing. The staff were friendly but clearly couldnt cope with a large party. Several members of our family had to wait for their meals, the vegetables were forgotten and we hardly saw any staff. The food was nice when it came but nothing special. I gave the staff a cake to cut which was just left on the side despite promises to light candles and sing happy birthday! The room was freezing and we couldnt wait to go home and get warm!

the wheatseaf been taken over 10th march 2008 phil who now the owner once used to do the karaoke there 10yrs ago is back. they have karaoke fri/sat with dj timmy check facebook out for the group. fantastic bar staff even the landlord works. if you love sport then go there big mansfield town followers and all major sporting events shown on all big screen and they are big plus out side smoking area has tv plus outside speakers. poker nights and now nintendo wii nights, best thing about this pub there is no violence like other town centre pubs its family orientated including the day time. get ya selfs down there

Thank you Rufford Arms for ruining my folks diamond wedding. Special thanks to Ash who was lucky to get out of the place alive.The only way one of the guests could refrain from hitting him for his outstanding rudeness was to spend the evening in the car park.Gave our booked room away to another party. When told that there wasn't another party in there when we booked replied well there is now. Refuse to move tables so we could sit together. We eventually moved the tables ouselves and asked well is this ok, he replied I suppose it will have to be At least John Cleese was funny your outfit isn't!

Rufford Arms L S Bevan Mansfield rather tired!
I have just spent three nights at the Rufford Arms. Due to being frequently disturbed and woken in the early hours (1am) by people moving about in upstairs rooms, I am as tired as the decor looked in my hotel room. The bathroom smelled stale, and openening straight off one side of the bed, the smell unpleasently permeated the whole room . Their saving grace was that the food in the restaurant, other than at breakfast, was not bad. The vegetables are over cooked but they say this is to cater for their older clients. The hotel is cheap, but I would think they would do more buisiness if they improved soundproofing, and room and bathroom decor, and charged a little more to cover costs. Overall a disappointing stay.

30/03/06 Karaoke advertised until 12pm. Finished at 23.30. Duty manager very off hand when it was pointed out tha posters advertised 12pm. Blamed karaoke! I pointed out that this was har respondsibilty and was ordered to leave the premises.Because of the poster I had ordered another drink to take me to the advertised finish. when I asked for company address she walked away and eventually I was given it by a Bar team member. I am 64 years old and not your normal over the top drinker . A rare good night out was really spoiled.At no time was I aggressive or abusive, as a bar manager for Whitbread I do know the score!

Chequers Inn Mark Wardle Retford well worth it!
Many times have I chosen the Chequers at Ranby. An extensive menu, well apart from the Landlord's Table and other chains that wallow in Computer food This place has to be tried and tested over a long period of time, and to be frank, there are far worse things to have to do in life! I have been there more than 2 dozen times in the past 2 years and have rarely had chance to moan. All freshly cooked with an aire of individuality, the food is superb, though be prepared to wait a little whilst they cook it! There's a lovely ambience to the restaurant and a further no smoking area upstairs, all kitted out with traditional furniture and lovely leather cushions! The service is friendly and there's a decent range of beers, including a couple of handpulls. The only down side to the Chequers, in my opinion is that they have jumped on the band wagon regarding wine prices, totally over the top. On the good side, you won't get a better carvery throughout Sunday afternoon, and I believe, well into the evening! STunning.. just stunning!

Elm Tree Inn & Barn Owl Restaurant Jim & Aimee Altemus Worksop Literally our best dining experience EVER!!!
My wife and I went to dinner at The Elm Tree Inn at the suggest of Joan from Brown's Old Cottage Inn in nearby Holbeck. We ended up in the Barn Owl Restaurant, located behind the Elm Tree. Drinks in the lounge while waiting for our starters, lovely conversation with a local couple, and then upstairs for a dining experience that could only be described as brilliant. Since we dined in London the previous Sunday, my wife was on a quest for Yorkshire pudding, and have no success. The topic of Yorkshire pudding came up when the hostess came in to take our order, and though it wasn't on the menu, the hostess was kind enough to ask the chef if he could whip up a batch for her, which the chef was nice enough to do. Aimee's chicken dish in the Yorkshire pudding was mouth watering, while my from the menu beef stroganoff was sublime. As good as the food was, from starter to dessert, what made the dining experience so wonderful was the service. With 3 staff to attend to 4 guests in the dining room, our every need was attended to quickly and consientiously. We cannot stress enough how wonderful the whole dining experience was at The Elm Tree Inn & The Barn Owl Restaurant. If you are within 50 miles of Worksop, you need to go to this restaurant. It will not disappoint.

Sunday dinners are tradional and at £3.50 great value.Be there at noon, to get a table, if not phone for a reservation. Its that busy that there is often 20+ people waiting for the door to open. Mark and Deb are cooking again so its lovely. Food is available each evening 4-7pm, good value menu. Landlady says they can keep the prices so low because she cooks and there are no extra wages. Flanagans Irish Bar Dave Watson Mansfield Fantastic
The best place to go on thurs, fri, sat and sun in mansfield. Very good quality beer, cheap prices, good music upstairs. You wont find any better service than from the R&B floor staff. Just refurbished downstairs and it looks good, but not my taste in music (its all house anthems) Have heard they may be improving upstairs which would be great because the roof is crap and the floor smells. Overall this pub/club is great.
