 Awful food, price and service
What an awful place.... I've never seen such undeserved arrogance in my life. I wondered if we were on some hidden camera TV program or something.... Surely people in the service industry can't be THAT rude by accident???

The owner clearly has a massive chip on his shoulder by the way he ranted at the table next to me... Totally unprovoked!

I will never go back here again as they clearly don't deserve the business with an attitude like that! Disgusting!

 unfriendly landlord
I,ve been going to the pike and musket for 30 years, never has it been so dirty, unfriendly, i dared to complain about the veqry poor food and filthy toilets, now all of a sudden the landlord refused to allow me to use cash back, although the other staff had no problems in doing so, when oh when are the mangement going to get a good landlord in what used to be a good pub, then and only then will i and my family return the landlord didn,t even have the guts to reply to my complaint, all in all a dirty unfriendly very poor food pub

 Disappointed eater
I visited the pub recently and was really disappointed with the medium steak I had ordered, it was so tough I couldn't eat it.
Reading the previous comments, I do have to agree with some of them......it does seem the centre of the pub think they own it!

 Not a good experience
When the food arrived the waitress offered us no sauces.
The chicken was hard and dry and the bacon was raw, the chips looked like they had been reheated and the salad was not worth having. When the waitress came back for the plates she did not aske us if we had enjoyed our meals she just picked up the plates. I told her i was not happy with my food she said she would tell the chef, when she came back to collect the rest of the plates she did not even apologise .

This pub is ok if you can stand the arrogant staff and regulars. Must point out this is not all the staff and regulars, most can be pleasant and helpful. Food and drink is standard for this type of pub.

I have frequented the 'Turmot Hoer' on many occasions with my family and have found it to be a very good pub with good food.
Sadly tho I have to agree with 'Anonymous' the regulars who stand in the middle do let the pub down...perhaps thats the 1% Mark Prosser is talking about??

 Stir crazy
Hi all and the anonymous people who like Mark said haven't got the courage to put their own name against their comments. Like a lot of people I have been frequenting this pub since it has been open and have made a lot of friends along the way so if you want to call me the slight ginger female who likes to tout herself around the regulars then you carry on. If it wasn't for these regulars and my family, I wouldn't have gotten through the past year losing my Nan and two uncles to cancer and just recently going through a divorce. I would have gone stir crazy if I had to stay at home on my own.
I don't understand why people are too quick to criticise others who they don't know or take the time to know. Life's too short to be cruel, so just remember that when you are talked about or put down, how does that make you feel?

 Just don't know anymore???????
Hello Turmut Hoer goers.
I think it would be mightily unfair of me to comment on the pub as an establishment or the food that is served within it as I am no longer a customer of said establishment (much due to my own indiscretions). However it still antagonises me that people continue to berate and single out certain individuals that regularly use this pub/eaterie. I really do urge you to prevent yourselves from the cowardly onslaught you subject these people to from behind your personal computers. I have nothing but respect for 99% of the people that frequent the Turmut Hoer and feel that you people that continually criticise are not only damaging the reputations of some of the nicest people I have had the pleasure to meet, but bringing shame upon yourself as you have not the courage to air your grievences to the individuals in question.

The pub is a lovely place to be, but is let down by the regulars, the small agorant grey haired man who seems to think he owns the place, little chris, whose mouth is fillthy!!! and the female slight ginger woman who touts herself around the regulars on the round table do let the pub down !!! On a plus the landlady is a warm and friendly and always makes us very welcome on our odd visits !!

this is a great pub for regulars to relax and have fun, all the locals are friendly and peoples comments on this site about SHAKER ARE UNCALLED FOR THIS MAN IS A TRUE GENTLEMAN WHO ENJOYS HIS LIFE TO THE FULL. Called in with 3 colleagues midday yesterday for a quick working lunch clutching our 2 for £5 introductory offer vouchers. Three of us chose the Tipsy Steak Pie. The meal arrived quickly and we were asked by the waitress if everything was OK. We said yes thank . We then started eating.... the pastry on the pies was soggy and grey, the filling smelt of boiled dogs meat, its the only way I can described it. Revolting!! When the waitress came back to clear the table and asked was everything OK and I did say the pie was disgusting and she said I should of said earlier. Needless to say will not be going back.

Can't believe all the fuss and palava...they've painted it white....put plastic tacky signs all over it....and improved the menu.....

What a waste of time, effort and expectation.....bring back the brickwork and subtle gold letters....what was wrong with the quality menu of a few years back...it would have cost a couple of quid to change the menu...been there done that....on to thenext one as soon as possible please...we get bored easily in Abbeymead.

 What is going on ?
I was a regular at the Turmot from the day it opened untill 2 years ago when I moved to Devon.I am amazed at comments about children in the pub and staff attitude - I have 3 little girls and Nell the barmaid always went out of her way to make me and them welcome. Perhaps people who complain are unable to read the clear signage which showed where children were allowed. As regards remarks about Shaker, the man spends more money over the bar in a week than most others do in a year and he is good free entertainment- whilst he may be somewhat crude, he drinks in the part of the pub away from the family dining area which is, after all, an adult environment. The only critiscism I have is that it is too far from the beach compared with my new local. I have been back a few times, and will be calling in next week -watch this space !

i have been going to this on and off for many years. i have read all the comments and have to agree with most of them.
i cant believe the blonde has managed to keep her job for so long!
i understand the brewery doesnt want children running arounf. but the pub is on a young family estate. when it 1st opened we use to take our boys there as they has a small play area. why did this change?
from what i gather the current managers do not have a family. so they are a bit out of touch in my opinion. but there is no need for hostility! i have sat there drinking and watched them being quite hostile to people with families. they dont even talk to the children! thats not nice!
as for the food. it is very average! quite poor qaulity! its all processed food! but thats not the chefs fault! if s/he isnt given the tools s/he cant produce the goods! i would rather pay extra for better quality food.
i hope the brewery does read these comments.as they are the ones to blame for all the negative comments.

 not a vendetta
its not a vendetta Mark. The no child policy is fine with alot of people after 7pm. The main problem on this site seems to be a certain blonde barmaid. I refuse to eat or drink until someone tells me she no longer works there. Never before have I recieved such poor service and such an attitude. If someone who still drinks there would be kind enough to let me know when the management come to their senses and ill give it another chance.

 Regular Lunctime Diner
I am a regular at the Turmut and often eat here with friends at lunchtime or some evenings with the family because as has been said before the food service is usually fast and extremely good value. There is a noisy crowd that hang around the bar but why is that different to any other pub/restaurant in the country?, its a big pub and there's plenty of space to sit elsewhere. I have never had any issue with any of the staff, although in busy periods it can take a long time to get served in the evenings. However, I have watched some strident customers come in and ignore the signage with respect to children and when informed that get really nasty to the staff. There is a group who, for whatever reason, seem insistant on bad mouthing the pub, management and staff. Its a free world but seems like a vendetta by very petty small minded people who are better suited to other pubs in the area which are clearly so much to their liking that they keep going back to the Turnut Hoer to find fault in it.

I agree with Mark..Shameful. The Turmut has a much better environment than other pubs in the Abbeymead area. This is due to local clientel..Not to have children in the Turmut is the brewery's decision not the Landlady's. All the bar staff do is their job and a good job they all do. I have no problem leaving my correct name..

I wrote last year commenting on the attitude of a particular female member of staff. The pub or someone connected to it took it upon themselves to write a comment using my name suggesting I loved the place. I should like to put the record straight. The pub is fine but the woman in question is aweful.

 Children in pubs
Why do parents think they have a right to take children in pubs? I like the stance that the brewery take in this establishment and limit them to eating main meals only in a restricted part of the dining area and before 6.30. The staff are only doing what the brewery are asking them to do as their job.

Its a good pub, with good staff that offers good value on its food and drink. I use it a lot at lunchtimes as do a lot of elderly people and find the staff always polite and helpful. It always the rude young families that come in once a year and think they've some sort of right to change the things that most regular customers like about the place...one them being NO SCREAMING UNCONTROLLED KIDS! Keep it up Caroline and staff...

 Grow Up!
For those people who have got nothing else in their lives but to criticise, may the devil spare you! I personally cannot believe that people are that cowardly that they have to voice their grievences on such a forum! And what amazes me even more is that they choose to publically criticise 2 people that have in my experience been nothing but couteous! Further to this I would like to add that if people are criticising individuals upon their language, then they should learn our queens English and revise their previous statements. Your spelling, punctuation and grammar totally undermines any argument you may think you carry! And I'm not scared to place my real name on here! Mark Prosser!

im a regular up this fine establishment and i think its a great pub dont blame the pub for the brewerys stance on children its not their doing.also if you have to wait for a drink dont moan its because your in a popular pub so its gona get busy, other than that the staff are very hard working in a very busy at times place of work for minimal pay i expect

I patronise the Turmut Hoer and find it to be a Quality establishment, with a Quality staff giving Quality service. I suggest if you donít like what you get you find somewhere more suitable to your tastes. Thatís lifeís options maybe if you did not get invited in to the company at the Turmut you should look inward perhaps you were seen as a UN desirable. Lifeís for living not complaining move on complainers we donít need you or your comments at the turmut.

Where do you begin...The food and decor are of adequate standard, However!! The foul mouthed Blonde barmaid Nel.. The rude scruffy looking tall man who swears 4-5 times in a sentence(referred to as Shaker) or the regulars who frown upon anyone who dares to sit at their precious table without been asked. There is rumour that this pup is going to be a SIZZLER pub. CHILDREN WELCOME. Although the locals are not happy with this. Maybe the Ridge and Furrow will benefit from the change.

 Bar Lady
OH MY GOD! I have never experienced rudeness from a bar lady like i experienced here. I went for lunch last friday with my parents and my little boy. As soon as i walked through the door the blonde bar lady pounced on me and told me to sit over there as i had a child with me. She then told me before i even had chance to sit down that unless i was dining i should leave as i had a child. I then ordered our food and drink and when the condiments and cutlery were brought over she then took one look at my son and tutted, almost like i shouldnt be there. Why do they let children in then if they dont want them there?they should make it an adults only pub. She was rude to others while i was there and 1 family walked out in discust. I cant believe this woman is allowed to carry on working there. She is a discrace and her attitude stinks. I was warned before i went about her but i thought she couldnt be that bad, infact she was worse. BOYCOTT THIS PUB i know i will never go there again.

 Scottish Blonde Barmaid
She has received a number of complaints (both on and offline) but still uses the same rude, aggressive approach. Are the Managers unaware of this problem ??? Because I know of several complaints made to Karoline directly , and several people refusing to eat or drink there now. Surely its time for the Management or Brewery to take action.. I cant swim, so I stay out of the waterÖ...she is no good with customers keep her out of the customer focused role. What about the kitchen? What about retraining or fireing? My family, friends and I now drink in the Ridge and will all continue to do so until something changes. The Ridge on the other hand loves her, because she is good for their business. This is my attempt to speak to the Management, but Iím pretty sure they donít read these posts as if they did she would have been sacked a long time ago

We only staff if certian bar staff are working
Well were do you start, if theres 3, 30 or 300 people in the pub service is slow. They have bar staff collecting glasses when there are queues of customers. I am going to suggest to the brewery that they give all staff custmer service training to the highest degree, starting with the landlady. Oh and I dont think staff should be able to collect these beer drinking points. Staff of other pubs are not allowed to take part. Staff in the turnet are always top of the leader board. Also, when they say food is available til 9 0r 10 on certain nights then it should be. They finish selling food when they feel like it. If they run out then improvise and cook something else. Its all out of packets anyway.

 Beware the miserable barmaid!
Further to another recent posting I totally agree that some of the staff here should not be in a customer facing role. The Blonde Barmaid is probably the rudest bar worker I have ever met. We ate there last night and the food was great value so shame that her sirly attitude spoiled it. We don't take the children there anymore due to her attitude and I wouldn't dream of taking any buisness clients there.

Not a community Pub in the community
Child Friendly they are definately not! Four years ago I boycotted this pub because we were practically thrown out because we dare enter the pub on Christmas Eve with a child for dinner. This was after I had visited the pub a few days before to confirm that I could take a child there.
I thought four years later that things may have improved but the same lady was working there behind the bar with dyed blond hair about 5'5 and pounced on us as soon as we entered for lunch with children and snarled are you eating? Well you have to stay in this section. Further dealings with her were just as friendly. Other than that a pleasant visit!

My wife and I went for a meal recently expecting service with a smile which we got from the bar staff.
When our food arrived, It was not service with a smile but service with a snarl. At the end of our meal the plates were collected our not so friendly waitress asked have you finished instead of was your meal to your satisfaction. This could/should be a more friendly pup and we may not eat there again.

The First time i visited this pub the service was slow to say the least, the bar staff have an attitude unlike i have ever experienced in the pub trade. After ordering on that ocasion the food took so long to arrive i had finished my Pint and whilst i was waiting at the bar a good 15 mins my food arrived,I gave up with the bar to start my now stone cold food,Well recently i thought i would give it another try bit of a 2nd chance Only to find no change at all in fact it was even worse service, its a shame that the management don,t Give a dam Perhaps somone in authority ought to GET A GRIP on this Potentially very good pub.

 A pub that's lost it's way
I go to a pub for a pint or two, maybe a bite to eat and hopefully, some pleasant company.

What I don't go to a pub for is to be verbally abused by the bar staff and to be served awful food - I've experienced both.

The pub has a strict first come first served rule, which in principal is ok, but the staff believe they are infallible.

Myself and another chap were at the bar and it was my turn next. The young blonde barmaid, who turned out to have the foulest mouth I've ever witnessed (and I did 10 years in the Navy, so this is quite some accolade) turn to serve the other chap. He told this bimbo that I was next as did I and was treated to verbal attack, the likes of which I've never heard before. The other chap got served first and the pub lost a customer.

You might think I'm a rowdy youngster, but no, I'm in my late 50's and certainly not out looking for a fight with anybody.

I'm not leaving my email address as I really don't want to be contacted. The pub chain needs to up its game and perhaps refresh the management team.

This place used to be really good until the new landlord took over. My friends and I used to meet at this pub when we met up a few times a year as we lived in diffrent areas. It was a fantastic family pub that we loved going to. But we recently went again and it is no longer this way. We both have kids aged 2 and as you know kids like to talk and play and we respected there was a 45 min! wait. While haveing our food the service was terrible and they told us to shut our kids up. One who was singing and the other waiting for his food. We decided to not even think about desert as we werent going to put anymore money into the place my daughter didnt even finish her dinner. We asked to speak to the landlord and the women said he was sitting next to you and was not happy with the noise the children where makeing. The landlord arrived and gave us stinking attidude, really was not professional. We will never go again.

Best Pub I Have Ever been to
The Ale was superb... they have the usual largers (Fosters, XXXX, Stella), they have 2 unusual ciders (Thatchers Old Rascal & Gold) and John Smiths Boddingtons and Guiness. they have some intersting ales. Greene King IPA was £2 a pint! (THAT DAMN CHEAP) Morland Old Speckled Hen and A Guest Ale.
That Ale Was Wikcwar's Cotswold Way which i had a pint of and was superb.

the Bar service was excellent... very informative and he seemed very proud of the ales in the pub...

For The meals i have to give 10 out of 10. i had a 16 oZ rump steak cooked medium rare and was perfect each bite was perfect. the chips and salad was well presented. the waitess was very polite and that gets a full thumbs up. brilliant pub!

Great local pub with good atmosphere.
This pub is the best in the area. The food is good and service is usually great and I have never experienced problems there. They are strict on their children policy for a reason, and I agree with the previous comment that I prefer a child free pub anyway. Pubs need to be extremely cautious with whom they allow in, so as to avoid legal problems.

 A great Salsa Night
Butlers host a Salsa Night every Tuesday from 8pm to 11pm. Lessons cater for Absolute Beginners up to Intermediates and around 70 people turn upon the night. After the class there is plenty of time to practice what you have learned. A fun and friendly bunch of people in a buzzing (and non smoking) environment. Check out details of the night at www.salsasquad.com

 Why the problem over kids
Why is it that everyone with a child feels they have a right to go into a licensed premises with said child.

I am childless by choice and actually love the fact that only children who are dining are allowed in the Turmut. I go there to escape the children of the estate and can think of nothing worse than my refuge from them allowing them in.

The staff (mostly) and management are excellent and although I have dietary requirements are always willing to help out where they can.

 Top Notch
Fabtastic pub!!! Great atmosphere, and the bar staff are great!!! Previous criticism seems to be due to their policy on children...but surely any respectable parent wouldn't be taking their kids to a pub in the first place??! I can't fault this pub at all!

A great place all the time
This is a typical student pub, its cheap, and great for meeting up with people before clubbing on Wednesdays, Fridays or Saturadays. & also a good atmosphere at quieter times.

this pub is disgusting the food is served cold and the staff are ill mannered. The set up is terrible to get to the non smoking area you have to go through the smoking area. Although the food and drink are cheep it is shown in the service.

 Going downhill
Over the last 12 or so months, the Tallship Inn has plummeted from the dizzy heights of success in 2004 (when it was arguably one of the best seafood restaurants in Gloucestershire) to the murky depths of falling trade figures in the first half of 2006. The whole establishment seems to lack the warmth it once had, and I would attribute this mainly to the exodus of quality staff that used to serve my freinds and I over the last couple of years. What a shame!

 A very poor pub
I am disguested with the pub's attitude to families regardless of the previous comment. We have always dined so they have had no excuse to turn us away however on this occasion we were refused drinks service after our main course as we were not having desserts and we had a child with us. The pub is happy to take our money when we are dining but then expect us to leave when it suits them. I am appalled, given that the pub is located in a family orientated area and will never frequent the establishment again. I suggest that others with families do the same and visit pubs that welcome their clientelle!

 Turmout Hoer
As a customer of the Turmot Hoer and one with a small child I can appreciate all the comments made what I do not understand is why people are blaming the staff as they are only following the wishes of the brewery. I think you may find the decsion is part of the licencing act awarded to the pub and the type of licence applied for would have been made by those in high places in the brewery management and not by the Landlady or staff. If they were to break their licencing act then they would be breaking the law as if they were to serve an individual with alcohol under the age of 18. I have always found the majority of the staff to be polite and helpful even when they are extremley busy and short staffed.

Allowing children in an estate pub
Why build a pub like this in the middle of a built up estate. I took my child in just to pick up my husband when a BARMAID not even management asked us to leave as the child wasn't dining. What harm would it cause anyone to allow the child and mother a drink?

 Turmut Hoer- lack of hosipitality
My 18 year old son and three of his friends were told to leave the Turmut Hoer when they arrived for lunch. Despite offering id, which was ignored, and confirming they were there to eat they were still turned away. When the barmaid was subsequently questioned by my husband she said it was because they were not all family members! Utter rubbish. Just recently a friend of mine arrived at the pub, at lunchtime, to pick up her husband. Unfortunately she had the audacity to have her young son with her. After just five minutes, she was asked to leave as the child was not allowed. The reason being he was not having a meal. As we live on a large estate, family orientated with a large primary school and community facilities catering for all ages this pub is completely out of touch with what the residents want.
The staff and management obviously need retraining or replacing if they have this kind of attitude towards their customer.

Nice Pub - shame about the management
I have been living in Abbeymead since before the pub was built, and myself and my family have been using the pub reguarly since it opened. It has recently been taken over and instead of it being the 'family' pub it used to be, children are now no longer allowed in unless they are eating, and even then they must leave by 7pm! Given that Abbeymead is a family orientated area I think this decision is appalling. Especially after we were asked to leave the pub on Boxing Day because we weren't eating - we have gone to the Turmut on Boxing Day as a family tradition for the last 8 years!

excellent value in a tradional pub
The food is very reasonably priced, the Sunday lunch is excellent but booking is advised as it is very busy. The meat is bought locally and the vegetables are fresh not frozen. Smoking is not allowed in the lounge on Sundays.
Great view of the river from the garden which is packed in the summer.
A 'real' pub with friendly staff. Worth a visit!
