 Best Pub in Exeter
Wonderful pub can’t wait for this CORONAVIRUS lock down to end
So I can get away from the wife (only joking Anne hunny Bun ) this pub has so much history and character going back many years
Billy Idol of Generation X was a regular along with Samantha Fox back in the day
Bob the landlord is a real cockney character with an eye 👁 for the ladies. He is more like a father than a landlord offering out advice and being a shoulder to cry on. The pub has hundreds of different Ciders and during winter has a Roaring and comforting real fire 🔥 Where Bob will often come out from behind the bar and roast chestnuts 🌰 in the grate and If you are really lucky he will tell you one of his famous Ghost Stories handed down to him from his Grandmother who lived in the east end slums of London
With two full time chefs on board I rate the food as good as any fancy London restaurant and I would recommend this pub to anyone.

Went in for the Egyptian 🇪🇬 Style breakfast 🍳
The Gables serves a variety of breakfasts
From around the World.
I went for the Ful Medames which is a famed Egyptian Breakfast recipe as far back as the fourth century where the beans were buried over gentle embers to slow cook.
Louise the chef cooked the fava beans to perfection
And drizzled the Tahini sauce all over the beans with some lemon 🍋 to give it a kick
With some hard boiled eggs and smoky grilled flat breads refreshingly chopped tomatoes 🍅 and cucumber
Absolutely Delecious.

We had the Sunday lunch yesterday at your restaurant 26/10/14 on arrival all seem to be very nice we ordered our lunch and found a seat my wife went up to get her lunch first to find hardly any thing there she was asked what meat she wanted she declined the beef as it was raw and running with blood the veg was all hard and not cooked through , she came back and did not look very happy with what she had on her tray. I then went up and saw the same as my wife ,the chef? Asked me if I wanted beef and my reply was that the beef was not cooked to which he replied he could put it back in the oven and cook it a bit more if I wanted I refused and said that I would have the pork he then cut the pork with the same knife as he used for the beef at which I was not amused at. I then went for the veg which as listed before was not a lot there to be had the swede tasted as if it was used in a casserole be fore it was very tainted as a result we left most of our lunch, Today my wife and I are home with sickness and diarrhoea and this is the only thing that we have eaten on Sunday Ican only put it down to your Sunday lunch , I am not a person who complains very much but found that I had to send this as to the way my wife and I are feeling to day and I assure you it's very uncomfortable and a good job that we did not have to go to work today to think we paid £20 for our lunch and end up with what we have hope you look into problem as soon as possible so that nobody else will feel the same as we our feeling today.

Had the best Sunday lunch ever here two weeks ago & have just booked seven people in again this Sunday. I had goats cheese & rocket starter which was too pretty to eat & tasted lovely. my husband had the crab starter which he really loved. Guests had the pâté...same standard. We all had the Roast beef which was amazing, Yorkshire puts we're great and the vegetables were the best I've ever had in a pub ( usually broccoli is massacred) just perfect. Only one point lost the the roast potatoes had obviously been standing & werenot at all nice..HOWEVER we did eat late & I imagine at an earlier sitting they would be better. even so the rest of the meal was so good we are giving it another go...service & ambience was very good.

 Garlic - Bread ?
We have eaten here in April and May. The first time we had to wait an hour to be served; the second time (last night) we waited one and a half hours! It is a pity as the food is nice when you get it (though the garlic bread was stone cold) and we are local, but after waiting so long I would have eaten anything!

 It started so well
Beautiful old pub with lots of character, slate floor and a wood burner set in a big old fireplace.
We sat there on a comfy sofa and enjoyed the ambience whilst waiting for our food.
We ordered Bacon and Brie sandwiches and chips.
Bread, very nice but far too thick.
Bacon, STREAKY , GRISTLY AND undercooked. Brie, what Brie? We have never had streaky bacon served in a pub before. Sandwiches were cold.
Very disappointed as we were hoping to book for dinner at the end of the month.
1 rosette given for the pub in a stunning setting.

 Good food and service
Had our Gundog Society AGM there and had a meal afterwards. We were all pleased and many of us eat out regularly, so pleased to see that this is somewhere we would recommend. Menu is not too long and certainly has something for everyone - look for the three or so different boards. One also knows that it is local and fresh as the pigeon had just run out as had the pollack (but that's what happens when the supply is limited because it's local) but scallops were clearly fresh and plentiful on the main course. Would have no qualms about going there at anytime.

Barts was not so much a pub, but more a lifestyle place with no predjudices from anyone that drank there. Great people, great staff, great live music, great food. Sadly missed by many.

We had used the Gissons for many years and taken many friends and business persons there. The new owners had taken over and we were so amazed at the two very small very thin slices of meat for £8.99p. We do not normally complain but we did ring when we arrived home and were told to come back and mention it next time. We assumed that we had received the O.A.P. portion. We duly went back but did not mention the last time just to find out if it was a mistake. It wasn`t. The portions were possibly smaller, so this time we complained to the chef who told us he was under orders from the new owners. I asked him if that is what you get for £8.99p what do you get for £6.99p. He replied one and a half slices of meat. I then replied that £2 for half a slice of meat was expensive. He duly gave us more meat. WE WILL NOT BE GOING BACK.

 Thank You my Children
It's very, very difficult to simply sit there and accept the things they're saying about you, taking things out of context and twisting it and not to say'
It isn't true and I'll prove it's not true.
And i had a chance at my impeachment trial last week in Plymouth to bring witnesses,
everybody involved in this who i got to talk to about this.
I Wanted them to come in and under testimony, sworn tell the truth.
I wanted everyone of those wiretap conversations heard ,
not one or two or three.but everyone of them,
I Wanted the whole truth out,and if they had allowed me that, I Could have begun the process of vindicating myself sooner.
thanks for your support

as this will cosy you an arm and leg.
The first thing to do is buy a pint sit down outside at one of the tables this can only be done in summer or you will freeze your tits off
then you drink the pint and after reach into your carrier bag and pour yourself a pint out of one of the Bottles of cider that you have pinched or bought cheap from Lidls supermarket and keep re-filling all afternoon this is what most Exonians do and it's only the grockles and the thickies and the rich que up OVER AN HOUR to drink the overpriced crap real ale.

We then had a leak which came down onto our table no comment made but a ice bucket was place on the table, not a mention of we will find you another table the leak became 3 leaks and we placed our empty glass under them, still no acknowledgement from staff. We were given our sunday lunch which was disappointing and tasted of mass catering!!!! . Then the bill was delivered with 4 mints for a table of seven and the waitress said heres your bill you didnt want any puddings did you?. Well actually we did but then decided not to. No apologies , bad service, food not that good dont think we will be back. Shame.

 stone cold food
Went there this evening with friends after good reports. Very disappointed ordered lasagne served stone cold. The very attentive landlord on arrival was nowhere to be seen after complaint about this and no apology given by him or his staff. Other food over priced and underwhelming.......yet another overpretentious pub in the countryside....so sad! (and very expensive drinks)

went in the Gables 4 the Cockney Theme night.
thought i would enter in to the spirt of it
so i ordered the Eel and mash
never had it before it was nice.
The landlord was dressed up as a Pearly Queen and was having a right o sing song on the piano.
He seemed to think it funny to keep reffering me as his Bitch which was funny at 1st but then became boring after the 10th time of hearing it .
But what really got my goat was when i moaned about the size of the head on my pint of bitter,he replied
Do You Want A Slap ? You Slag
i think he was joking but as i am on the sensitive side i just burst into tears and fled the pub.

 Darts Night Blues
I Can only judge by what i have seen.
As Captain of the Village Inn darts team
We turned up Monday 09/07/2012
for a darts match against the Green Gables.
We were winning the game quite easy when half way through a fight broke out between to women if you can call them that.
the match was stopped as the girls were rolling around the floor underneath the dart board. there was blood everywhere and nobody tried to split them up for at least 5 minutes i was shocked and scared as i am not use to seeing violence let alone from females.
not having ago but speaking as i saw it. my teams nerves were shattered and we continued the match but our heart was no longer in the match which we went on to loose.

 Brilliant !!!!!!!
As a Gourmand of food
I Was recomended the Green Gables from a friend in Devon.
And decided the time was right to try the well known Green Gables as i have also often seen it in many good food guide books, and boy was i in for a treat.
I Had the local Fresh King Teignmouth prawns followed by Pan fried Sea Trout ,caught that very morning from The river Exe.
It was out of this world so i decided i would have a pudding i went for the .........
Sultan's Golden Cake
which contained .. Quince,Figs, and apricot pears which had been soaked in Jamican rum for over two years, the topping was caramel and black truffels and of course a gold leaf. i never knew home cooked food could be as good as this.
what more can i say
praise to the Green Gables and the chef's.

Ms Taylor
 Lovely Pub, Great Food
I was slightly apprehensive about booking a table for food here, having read some awful reviews about a very rude owner and terrible service. However, I thought I'd give it a shot and was pleasantly surprised. The pub has a lovely atmosphere and we were made to feel very welcome. The food was delicious and reasonably priced and the service was excellent. I have recently found out that this pub has been taken over by new landlords (thank goodness by the sounds of previous reviews!) and I look forward to visiting again in the near future. Would definitely recommend!

Elizabeth in Perth Australia
Good to see Uncle Bob Is still going strong...............My hubby and I had our leaving do At the Green as it is
affectionately known by the locals............ Before we emigrated to Australia this was the local..
Suprised no one has mentioned
Sir Cotter the resident Ghost.........
...legend has it that Sir Cotter was a Cavalier who was chased by the heavily armed Roundheads.
Sir Cotter managed to lose them and hid in the Cellar of the Green Gables Inn.
Only to be discovered by the Landlady at the time one Linda Bowe
Who turned Sir Cotter over to the roundheads , who shot him on the spot.....
The Ghost of Sir Cotter is said to roam the Gables searching for the descendants of Linda Bowe for his revenge.
not sure i believe the story but i do know it is the one place in Blighty we miss.
long live the Green.

well off we drove to find the LEY arms. According to our info' it was next to a church and positioned on the crossways of ley lines, ideal for dowsers!!! What a suprise we got, upon arriving, the car park, because of the building and position should have been full of classic cars. On entering the pub, which we were magically drawn into, the atmosphere was very relaxing, we were greeted by a very attractive landlady who made us more than welcome. The landlord was also welcoming, and they went to great lenghts to make us feel welcome. We decided to stay for a meal, and all we could say is that it was superb. This couple have only just taken over this pub and we will return soon, they deserve to get on well. All creeds are welcome.

Just love to sit in the beer garden listening to the birds.
have been coming here for many years as it's near enough to walk from Redhills close yet far enough to be away from the hustle and bustle of City life.
the bar staff are very friendly as is the banquet server Jacqueline.
the lodger John Mc has become like a father to me and Tracey like an Aunty admittedly not a favourite Aunty as that will allways be Aunty Jenny who used to bath me when i was little.
if you are looking for a nice peacefull day out i recomend the Royal Oak Nadderwater. they have a new chef a foreign chap i think he could be Italian or Corsican or even Albanian , whatever he is he makes a fine roast dinner better than mummy even made.
the beer is cheap and there is a huge selection and on friday nights there is karroke and i get up and sing holiday by Maddona and really get into the swing of the night. pop along if ypu want a good night.

The Green Gables is a real old fashioned family pub with an open fire roaring during the winter which the friendly locals are often toasting bread or roasting chestnuts.
The food is top quality, the landlord
Robert Keen (M.B.E) prepares and does all the cooking all the food is local and Bob trained as a chef in Paris.
the barmaids are very pretty and operate a waitress service so you dont waste time at the bar. Bob keeps over 400 fine quality wine and over 60 different Ciders. the pub is child friendly and even operates a baby sitting service Bobs daughter Samantha is a child minder. first class pub which i was going to keep secret.

A Local Car Club
 A very unsatisfactory experience.
We booked months ago for a party of about 24 for Boxing day for the carvery. We checked Christmas Eve and were told that all was well and we were expected. We rang Boxing morning to confirm numbers and were told brusquely that we would need to ring back after 12o/c. We rang at 11.50 and were told sharply that we had already been informed to ring at 12o/c.

Upon entering we saw that the only menu available was a specials board with three choices:-

Chicken Curry
Fish Pie
Vegetable Lasagne

Hardly Christmas fayre.
With the benefit of hindsight we should have left there and then. There was a very long wait for any food to appear and this was not due to the pub being busy as our party was almost the only customers. Conversation while we waited was very difficult because the musac was so loud. We repeatedly asked for it to be turned down, but our requests were ignored, so this further increased our dis-satisfaction with the way things were going.
Our fish pie, when it finally arrived, was admittedly hot and tasty, but the portion was small and there were NO vegetables, only a VERY small salad. We needed another meal when we got home.
We arrived at the pub at 1o/c and left at 3.30. Some people who had ordered a sweet had still not received it after all this time.
Looking back, the few staff that were on duty generally tried their best, but there were not enough of them to cater for the size of party which had been known by the pub for months before. The owners need to get their act together and organise enough staff, a proper menu, and TURN THE MUSAC DOWN.

 couldnt beilve it
About 2 months ago we booked a table for 4 of us for a Christmas meal at the Ley Arms. Earlier this week, they were contacted and we confirmed the date etc and they were given a phone number to contact should there be any difficulty. We were all looking forward to our Christmas meal, and have eaten there at Christmas in years gone by as well as meeting for drinks throughout the year. On arrival, we had a drink and were shown to our table. There were only about 10 people in the bar and no other diners. The waitress handed us festive menus and I ordered Sole Veronique to start, but the waitress said she'd have to check if it was still available. She returned and said it wasn't and that no meals were available from the Christmas menu, and all they could offer us were meals from the 'specials' board - a decidedly un-festive choice of lambs liver, belly pork, chicken jalfrezi, lasagne and a couple of other non-descript dishes. There were no meals available from the ordinary menu either. To say we were angry and disgusted is an understatement. So, we left and drove to another pub 5 minutes away (Gissons) where we were made to feel welcome and had an excellent meal.
I don't blame the waitress or bar staff who were polite but those who 'run' the pub really should not be in business - they probably won't be for much longer. It's a real shame as thousands of pounds must have been spent on it recently.
We won't be going back for drinks or a meal any time soon.

A Nonymous
 Great, at first...
Arrived at the Ley Arms expecting the worst and was, at first, pleasantly surprised. The bar staff were lovely and the waitress was jolly. Food was great and the deserts were delicious. In fact almost everything was five stars... but here's the catch. The atmosphere of the place is not quite cozy and comfy... music was dreadful (heavy metal and Lilly Allen), the ambiance stale (a cross between an unfashionable Soho nightclub and a barn) and the owner was loud and quite frankly viscous towards his staff. He would shout from one end of the bar to the other at the bar girl - while we were having our candlelit dinner- who seemed to be doing no harm to anyone folding napkins and keeping an eye on the bar area.I would return but this chap spoiled the evening for us. I'm sure he's a lovely man really but he displayed no people or management or any kind of skills (and yet demanded skills from all around him in very loud and bullying bellows). It seems obvious what has happened here... a good pub with good grub and great, caring staff has been taken over by someone who has watched too much Gordon Ramsay programs and who's never worked in a pub before. Shame.

 What an improvement!
This is the second time of visiting on passing through Kennford, needed something to eat. Surroundings have improved immensely since the new owners have taken over, not dark and gloomy anymore, you can see what you're eating. Good to see different sizes of carvery; although I'm not under 12 and not an OAP, another slice of meat wouldn't have gone amiss, but one large slice was adequate. Prices and service acceptable. I am fussy where I dine, and would recommend Gissons to anyone. Well done Pete and Marg!

Best pub in Kennford, not full of clique locals. Avoid the other naff pubs, that's what I say!

Ok if you don't mind the abuse from the owner”
Having gone for a meal at The Ley Arms, I was expecting a warm and friendly reception. However our group were greeted by a foul tempered rude little man, who claimed to be one of the owners! He proceeded to hurl abuse at customers and staff alike. Needless to say we didn't hang around for a meal as to be perfectly honest I have had better service and a more friendly welcome at KFC!

on arrival was met by a man in a full lenght frock of some sort! looked for a seat for someone with mobility issues, sat down asked for a menu and was told we had to get up and go to the board - which was up steps ....mmmm simple if you can get up and down with no problem.

ordered our food (expensive food) whilst waiting the table beside us sent thier back as fish was not cooked and chips were cold ........ encouraging we thought - not.

food wasnt long in coming but while waiting in this 12th centry hostilery had to listen to
Amy Winehouse belting out while the man in the frock was girating around to it behind the bar!

Food arrives, before we start to eat man in frock appears everything ok we replied yes thanks then we began to eat ................not ok - again fish was not cooked in the middle. mushrooms were floating in grease (had to sponge it off with a tissue) plates were cold so what did look a nice meal became cold almost immediately so a lot was left uneaten. Waitress appears, did you enjoy your meal as we hadn't we expressed our opinion - no apology or offer to speak with the manager/kitchen. Upon her return we asked what the response from the kitchen was to our comments urm what comments she hadnt even bothered to say anything. The bill arrived still no comment.

The place is a joke, on our departure a local overheard us talking, stopped me I explained and he was soooooo upset. this has been my local all my life and its really sad to hear this Im sorry but these new people have taken over and it doesnt seem to be going well

Don't wast your time or money even going there - just admire the place as you drive by in the beautiful and friendly village of Kenn.

What has happened to the Ley Arms?!?!
Apparently it has been taken over, we visited on Sunday (11th September), the interior has had a bit of a makeover which we could live with, however, on enquiring at the bar about the menu were told that 'only carvery on a sunday' so... we ordered 4 carveries, only to be told 'we are not taking any more walk ins', I'm sorry, I thought we were customers and they were advertising carvery outside and what's more at 1pm, the restaurant was empty!!! and we only wanted to sit in the small bar area as we had a dog but apparently they wanted to make sure they conserved food for the 'booked' people. OMG, what sort of business is that?!. We are sad that our favourite Sunday spot has been ruined so sorry, can't recommend it now.
Disliked: Service

Having dined in The Ley Arms
times previously, I didn't question my boyfriend's suggestion to go for a family birthday meal there last night and we were pleased to be able to book a table last minute on a Friday night, 16/9/11 so they were expecting us. On arrival, the staff seemed very unprofessional and confused by our presence. We were told we usually have menus to hand out but our menu is on the board tonight. This consisted of about 5 different options - none of which were vegetarian - and a carvery. After finally getting our order taken by grabbing a waitress' attention, we ordered some food. 40 minutes went by and still no sign of food, or any kind of interaction from staff, feeling hungry I went up to the bar to ask where our food was, to which the rude barmaid pulled a disgruntled face and said we actually have a table of 22 up there and we are very busy. The restaurant was empty - 22 people is nothing in a pub of this size. How did they cope in the summer? Or were we the only ones not to receive the memo that this pub was being run by people that seemed to have never stepped foot in a pub before, let alone run one? The pub has had a makeover inside and looks very nice, but to be honest we much preferred the way the previous owners ran the pub, regardless of the paintwork. I will definitely not be recommending this pub to my friends, the service was appalling, the food was mediocre and the chef was extremely sarcastic when he came to slice my carvery (having known I'd asked why the food was taking so long). SORT IT OUT

Happy Local
 A pleasant surprise
Living in a beautiful rural valley on the outskirts of the city. We found ourselves at a bit of a loss when our regular local, The Ley, was taken over and we like many other locals decided to take our custom elsewhere. A brief glance at the comments on that pubs page will give you an idea why. So a few nights ago we decided to try dinner at this pub. I have to be honest and say we didn't have particularly high expectations. Its unassuming exterior and dated interior give it an uncared for slightly shabby look. However it just goes to show how wrong you can be. We were welcomed by a friendly young waitress who showed us to our table who happily answered all our questions. The owners who were serving behind the bar were friendly and welcoming and happy to chat and our food was way above the standard we expected. The menu had all the good pub standards and a specials board provided one or two more choices. My husband, who is rather fussy about his steaks, said his steak was excellent, I had one of the specials, spicy meatballs, which were delicious and my daughter meal of baguette and chips was also very good. With 2 rounds of drinks the bill for the three of us was just under £45.00. Which compared to other local pubs represents excellent value. So if your in the area or like me an alienated local I strongly recommend you give this lovely little traditional local pub a go.

Ex regular
 Histrionic Megolomanic
I liked this pub so have tried very hard to deal with the fact that the new owners are awful. I've made an effort to ignore the monument to bad taste the interior has become and tried to get into the spirit of the new 'townie' atmosphere. I even began to warm towards Pete. But Tim's histrionics are intolerable. The atmosphere around this man is horrendous. His is loud mouthed, unpleasant bully and this has already led to almost all of the original staff walking away along with many of the regular customers. His volatile and unpredictable behaviour creates a really unpleasant atmosphere. You would have to be brave and perhaps foolish to complain in this establishment. What is so upsetting is that there is nothing that can be done to save this once cosy and very friendly pub. The speed at which they are loosing custom will in time ensure the venture fails and they will be forced to leave but how long will this take and in what condition will they leave our lovely pub?

ok let do the nice bits staff so freindly well some are !! food ok nothing specail but still ok for the price.. what bothers me is the fact the the owners have no idea whats going on !!!!! and why are you fighting and arguing in the pub your treating this as your home BUT ITS NOT this place has gone down hill ver quickly as we have been here many times before as its was doing so well always busy and neally fully booked when we came last i understand that these two new blokes took over in the middle of june and they had big plans !!! anyway has we have found out they havnt even been in the trade before and it clearly shows this place is a shambles and i do not know how the lovely staff work there as never in our lifes have we seen so much bad behavour..... will never return whilst under this terriable management .. o yes what happen to last manager does anyone know were he went too we think his name was mark but cant remeber he had spikey hair and was so frendily and very helpful and always very Professional and the team were a delite to be served by we did reconise one waitress who been there a while her name was called saffie and we did tell her about this shocking seen and her little face was so embarrassed and look like she was frighten to say any coment but she told us im very sorry for this and smiled as us, we could see in her face that she had enough of this embrassing behaviour. sum this up our vist was a joke and the worst time we could of ever experience but the staff were very friendly and thats it not returning and has for the people who said there vists were good welll i find it very hard to beilve since these two have brought the pub

 Superb pub, a real find!
We were recommended this pub by the b&b we were staying in. I have to say that it was one of the best meals that I've ever eaten out. Firstly the otter ale was very well kept and an excellent ale. The Pinot grigo my wife had was equally good. My start of pork belly was superb! Only equalled by my mAin of pork medallions. My wife's steak was cooked to perfection, with home made onion rings to die for. An excellent cheese board followed, which unfortunately meant we skipped the very tempting puds. Service was very attentive and helpful, without being intrusive. My only complaint - I wish this pub was on my doorstep and not 3 hours away - this team can take over my local any day.

mr ward
 what a shame
visted the ley today for lunch 19/6/11 didnt relize that it has new owners and we notcied the new changes when we arrived !!!! well what a shame the inside looks so out of place .... and are meals wasnt that good to be honest , we have had better.
myself and my freinds have been going to the ley for many years and we have seen many new owners and management come and go as they hav'nt got it right or thought about what people and local people really want in a pub thought the last people and managerment and team had is so right they had such lovely parties and events and great offers plus the food was brillaint !!!!! we know that they had plan to refurb themselfs however things must have change.
myself and my wife have had so many great meals with friends and family and this change came by has a shock

well cant say me and my guests like the change but some may find it ok but for me and our guests not for us this should be a country pub And not made into a town bar sorry i wont be bothering to come back and neither will my guests. we will find another charming country pub somewhere else
i will say this the carvery chef is very freindly but hes been there for some time , i didnt know were the normal friendly manager matt was today but later on we found out as we would of like to of spoke to him about the changes that we didnt like however we have deceided to emial the new owners instead
we did ask were he was and was told he no longer works here !!! we were very shocked by this as we had really begun to be freind matt and trust him i know this young chap had worked very hard to build the ley back to a great country pub and me and my guests will turly miss this young man , i guess he didnt like the changes too we also were told that they have a new gm who also wasnt there today as he was on hoilday im sure he can keep up to the standard that the last manager did !!!! good luck new owners and your new gm as we wont be back !!!!

Now an urban pub in rural setting!
Looked in today, first itme since new tenants in charge. Decor and (no) ambiance just like a pub in middle of Exeter. Small group of locals seeking refuge at end of bar seeking solace from musak which overwhelmed the place. Country pub no more; just another licenced restaurant....it's a long winter ahead!!

 fantastic time
we visited the ley arms on a very busy friday night (27/5/11)and we were very pleasently surprised that they were fully booked ,but were still able to accomadate the four of us at such short notice. We had gone to the Gissons which is near only to find that it was empty and subsiquently felt very uncomfatable so we left .On speaking to the petrol pump attendant asked where they would suggest in the local area to eat and was highly recommended too the Ley Arms.Matt the GM explained that on arrival we would have a short wait which on seeing the full restaurant we totally understood and the staff were very attentive and nothing was too much to ask for.
Summary in full the new menu with this 50% offer was fantastic value for money and the quality and food was outsanding value and we were told that there is a new talented head chef within the team who has also put on an extensive specials board which we didn't try this time because i had a 12oz exmoor rump that was so succulant it melted and my guests went for a classic gammon egg and chips and the ley burger that was absolutely superb.
my partner and myself would whole heartedly recomend the ley arms to anyone who wants great food and great service with a great country pub atmosphere.
Just to finish we would love to thank matt and all the team for a great evening and we will be visiting again very soon.
We will be booking next time now we have found this hidden gem by chance ;-)
Thanks again with kind regards

 Great, genuine country pub
This is a great example of an English village pub. The food is excellent and good value (pies a speciality) and a range of tasty real ales are available from the bar. Friendly service and locals ensure a pleasant evening. Skittles alley to one end. Stay at the excellent Livermore Farm 10 minutes walk away.

 why moan!!!!
Why is it that most people who leave feedback are people who have got nothing better to do than moan. Well i thought that i would break the trend. We recently visited the Gissons arms after booking in to a local camp site for a weekend of rugby. We already read the reviews but we decided to go there anyway. We are so glad that we did. The carvery looked amazing but we decided on the main menu. I decided to go for the white bate as starter and the main course of sirloin steak. Followed by lemon merangue pie. The whole meal was a delight. The starter and main was piping hot and the clotted cream melted in the mouth. We stayed for a few more drinks and then returned for the full english in the morning which was even better!!! The new staff have recently taken over the pub and are very friendly. The pub is very clean and respectable. The food is not cheep but neither is it excessive. We were going to go for the carvery the next evening but unfortunately rugby and alcohol took over and we never made it!! The only complaint that i do have is a very dodgy fruit machine!!! Thank you Gissons for a lovely evenig and breakfast. We look forward to seeing you next year for the rugby.

 exellent service,good food pleasant surroundings
Went to the mill on the exe with two good friends last night and had an exellent relaxed evening. The pub was very busy but we were seated and had ordered in fifteen minutes. Our food arrived promptly and was very good, as was the service. Our waitress was attentive but not intrusive and very efficient. the surroundings are lovely with the water beside you and the atmosphere very upbeat and friendly. The pricing is very reasonable and portions on the large side but we did not feel pushed to vacate the table, unlike some places I could mention. This pub has very recently been taken over and the new owners can be justifiably proud of their achievements to date. Long may they continue.

 An excellent and friendly pub.
I found the Malthouse while visiting from Gloucester. The barman Luke was friendly, making polite conversation as the pub was still fairly quiet (noon on a Tuesday last week.) He explained that there was a new manager, Stewart, and that it was a friendly place to work. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and returned the next two days to eat and drink. The new manager was clearly making major efforts to speed up service, cleanliness and reduce waiting times. The staff were polite and efficient and the food and drinks were served speedily and were very good. Well done Stewart and your staff. I will certainly visit if I am in Exeter again and would recommend The Malthouse unreservedly. Thank you.

Nice pub with genuinly friendly management staff.
The pub has two sides to it. One is sports focused with 5 screens and plenty of room to view. The other is more relaxed and geared towards the local community. The Radford serves good value food, has great service, really good ale, and the management and staff are genuinley friendly and pleased to see you. I liked it, and will def. go again.

The Worst Place i have ever been to!
Well to begin with everything was going fine, nice pub and a general nice atmosphere. Then out of no where all you could here was loads of swearing coming from the kitchen, which was disgracefull considering our 4year old grandson was with us. Then it came to the food. One meal came out stone cold, the meat was really really tough and one meal was the wrong order. We were confronted by the owner who very insultingly told us we were being fusy, and reffused a reffund. She gave us the choice of either new meals which meant waiting another half an hour, or paying and leaving. If the people in the kitchen spent more time cooking then swearing, then maybe the food would be fine. Overall i was disgusted with the managment and i would have rather gone to macdonalds for my tea.

 Friendly and Traditional
Unlike larger unfriendly public houses I found the Tally Ho to be a welcoming alternative. The staff are very friendly and the choice and quality of the food is well above many other establishments. If you enjoy a venue slightly off the beaten track with history and quality then this is for you. I will be coming back again and again - fantastic.

 Lovely Meal and Great Team
I have often eaten at the Tally Ho and have found the food very good quality and the staff and team most accomodating and friendly. It has a lovely well kept beer garden perfect for families and a lovely atmosphere inside for those that would prefer a quiet drink. All in all a traditional pub worth a visit on a nice summers day.

We were very disappointed at the attitude of the managaement after we had given genuine feedback to the waitress about the lamb being tough. We were confronted by the owner who said that she had tasted the lamb we had returned and it melted in her mouth, she even brought it back to our table and proceeded to eat it in front of us. She did however struggle to cut it up in front of us. The whole thing was a little embarassing to say the least and backfired on the owner big time. My sons birthday ruined by an arrogant owner. Generally the service was very good and we rewarded the apologetic waitress accordingly.

As a pub to go for a pint, then good. Not sure that it knows what it wants to be, a pub or a gastro pub. The food was not great and the service very shoddy. Would not go back again. I was very disappointed as had heard good things about the place.

 Absolutely terrible!
I recently paid a visit to The Gissons after being told that it always was the best food in the Exter area. I took my Aged Aunt and Uncle, who I was visiting in the area thinking that we would all have a lovely meal and a great time.
How wrong we were!
The food came out cold and very unappetising. When I complained I was told that other customers had enjoyed theirs and that they hadn't had any other complaints. I told the member of staff that I didn't care about other people's opinion, We all thought that our meals were unpleasant and that we weren't happy. I was then told that they believed that there was nothing wrong with them but that we just didn't want to pay for our meals so we weter trying to get them for free!!! with that, we stood up and simply left!! we were so very disgusted!
We found a lovely little pub in the same village next to the post office called the Seven Stars and decided to eat there instead and it was really very good. We were very angry about our incident at the Gissons and spoke to someone on the next table to us while we were sat enjoying our meal at the Seven Stars. They told us that The Gissons had recently been taken over and everyone was complaining about the poor quality of the meals and service there now! My advice: Don't go to the Gissons - Go to the Seven Stars instead!

Mrs Not Very Happy
The worst experience of my life
I must admit from the outside this cosy little pub look’s just the business, well that’s until you enter
I stood point where food orders are taken and had to wait a good 15 minutes for the two bar staff behind the bar to finish their conversation before being approached
When eventually I was, I asked why I had been ignored and was told that it was a very important discussion which apparently had to take priority, I never knew that the mere fact that Alton Towers had a new ride would keep me standing there for 15 minutes.
When I asked to speak to the landlord I was told “Hi my names Matt, I am the Manager” well that’s just great it was the manager that was making me stand there while he was chatting about Alton Towers, well I never had a meal and decided not to even have a drink, however I might try out the new ride at Alton Towers apparently it looks awesome…..

 horrible owner and microwaved food
After working there I can tell you that what ms Viven said was mostly correct.
Many of the meals are just heated on the grill or microwave and none are fresh as they may suggest.
Meals I would recommend having are the nachos, beer battered fish and chips and some other fish dishes and their meal or the day type of things and their cake desserts. THAT IS ALL!!!!!!!
I would go if you intend on drinking in a nice atmosphere as you could sitting by the exe itself.
Also will have to ignor the eggy smell as you walk by (occasional) and could be in for a wait with the food due to lack of staff to cut costs, also many leave due to poor treatment buy the managers.

 I love this place :-)
My friends and I go to The Mill frequently and we love it. The food is great, the atmosphere is cosy and welcoming, and the garden is wonderful in the summer. Ms Vivian must have caught them on a rare off-day. I have only had a disappointing meal maybe twice in 6 years of going there, and it has been rectified straight away. I can heartily recommend The Mill on the Exe.

Bad hygene standards and no complaints procedure
Ordered a mediaum steak with chips and salad there was grit in the chips , i dismissed this and pushed them aside ... tucked into my salad and had bitten into a huge chunk of charcole grit , i can only assume this came from a dirty hotplate. i was in severe pain as i had a fowl taste in my mouth which wouldnt wash (oily charcole grit) also the grit had broken off what looked like a gient lump of cole in my salad this caused friction against my teath and cracked a filling , this later caused my tooth to crack in half. i complained to the staff who advised they would speek to the chef. they then hid in the kitchen for 10 minuites until i had left (i was with a group of work friends celebrating a special occasion) - this had ruined the celebration . they didnt have the decency for the chef to apologise inn person or offer a refund .I WILL NEVER GO THERE AGAIN AS THEY DO NOT DESERVE MY CUSTOM AFTER THE WAY I WAS TREATED . I am currently compiling a report from my dentist so that I an persue a recovery of medical costs incurred from them as a result of eating there.the atmosphere was splendid and it was traditional but BEWARE OF THE FOOD.

Great Food that is not out of a frozen bag
We have eaten there a few times, the menu is not hugh, but there is a good choice, As each meal is cooked to order it takes a little while to arrive, (if it came any quicker you would know it was pre-cooked). It is worth the wait, good honest food, beautifuly cooked and presented by cheerful staff.,
The menu is varied and never looks like the normal 'Pub Food and chips' list.
The Blue Ball is my first choice for a meal with friends

Poor Service at the Malthouse, Exeter.
My family group of 6 travelled to Exeter for a day out. I had previously dined at the Malthose and found it to be excellent value and service so decided to return. We arrived at 16.00, last Saturday, not a particularily busy period, and had to wait some time to get a table.. It took us until nearly 18.00 to be served with our 3 courses and in that tme we only managed to cajole the waitress into giving us 2 drinks. I only got one as apparently the barrel had run out but I was not offerred an alternative. The young Manageress endeavoured to jolly things along but I guess she was the usual product of the Harvester recruitment policy, namely loads of qualifications and managerial buzzwords but no shop floor experience or leadership skills. Needless to say next time we return to Exeter we will utilse Wetherspoons as we have always had first class service there. A pity really as I had extolled the virtues of this pub to others and now will have to make redress.

we went to the leyarms at Kenn for our christmas party on 20th Dec 08 ,we socialise a lot and eat out very often, never before have we had the expeirence we had on sat the attitude of the staff was awful when we asked where our veg was to accompany our now cold meal staff just shrugged their shoulders and said enough veg had already been brought out, when we said our turkey was now cold again shoulders we shrugged and the waitress said all she could do was bring out hot gravy ,which never then arrived. the whole attitude of the staff was discusting ,we will not be returning and certainly willl not recomend the Ley Arms to any of our friends ,also on leaving we learnt that the aother table of people were not happy either and also refusing to pay ful price .dont bother to go to this pub for a meal ,because if you do its guaranteed you will be disapointed

Nice place, shame about the food.

The menu boasts that ingredients are fresh and prepared with flair. Fresh maybe three weeks ago, but in the meantime shoved in the freezer and then the microwave, more like. Flair possibly refers to the chef's trousers.

My friend and I spent around £20 on two very sad dishes on February 3: Hawaiian Gammon and Cajun (?) Chicken. Tough, oversalted and very nearly inedible.

Fresh vegetables might have been fresh when they were put into their tins in Thailand or wherever; fresh from the fields of Devon, the Dauphinoise potatoes in a tasteless glutinous sauce and pathetic button mushrooms certainly were not.

Green beans were green. The only accuracy on the menu. Otherwise as tender as a tree trunk and just as unchewable.

We should have said something at the time, but we were speechless with disappointment.

Nice tomato juice, friendly barman, GREAT building - what a wasted opportunity!

 worth the trip
When I lived in Exeter it was always worth the walk along the canal path in the summer to this busy pub out in the wilds. Plenty of room to stretch out in the garden (even noisy kids can be kept at a distance!) with BBQs and games to mean an entire lazy day can be whiled away here.
